Guys here me out on Amamota (platonic or romantic idgaf)
LIKE THATS SUCH A FUN DUO IDEA?????
Kaito is super boisterous while Rantaro is super lax and those dynamics are always fun
Mr. I-believe-in-people-no-matter-what x Guy who doesn’t tell people about himself because everyone told him to give up
I think it’d be good for both of them honestly; like Kaito needs a shoulder to lean on once in a while and Rantaro needs to hear the words “don’t give up” and i feel they could give that to each other
note: dude im so sorry this turns into a character analysis under the cut
———— Buddy Material
Not looking at it through a romantic lens at all atm, i think they’d just be bros if Rantaro had lived longer. Like Kaito would call him an idiot for being so paranoid all the time but in the way he calls Maki a coward. He probably wouldn’t be sidekick material but he’d definitely be a friend. I feel Rantaro would find him endearing in a “oh what are we going to do with you” kind of way but also admire him for his ability to take charge, even if he is impulsive.
———— Trust
Kaito and Rantaro are on opposite ends of the trust spectrum, with Kaito on strong trust with little to no personal reasons and Rantaro on little trust with strong personal reasons.
Kaito needs to hear that while trusting people is awesome, they are still in a killing game and you need to bring facts and reason into the mix. Trust isn’t just given, it’s earned. The fourth trial was so tragic to watch because even when Shuichi had placed all of the evidence that Gonta was the culprit in front of them, Kaito refused to believe it and VOTED KOKICHI. His trust in Gonta blinded him a bit and influenced his actions; completely ignoring the evidence and voting with his gut even though he was proven wrong by Gonta himself.
Meanwhile Rantaro needs to let down his walls a little. He is so extremely paranoid and it literally kills him because he didn’t trust anybody enough to reveal the hidden door. While it was completely reasonable for Rantaro to not trust people, the fact that he knew more than the others tore him apart. The pressure of KNOWING there is a mastermind must have been actual torture, and not being able the trust anyone about it had to have been even worse because what if they end up being the mastermind? Closing yourself off is the most obvious option in that scenario, but far from the healthiest.
———— Opening Up/Needs
Kaito believes in people- it’s in his nature- but it ends up hurting him so much. In the end, it does more good than bad. Shuichi and Maki needed a person that hyped them up and told them they could do it and Kaito was more than fine with filling that role. But Kaito needs to take a break. He takes on people’s problems, but even heroes have problems that need solving sometimes. Kaito needs that person too, but theres nobody for him to talk about his problems because he refuses to let anybody in, even his closest friends.
Rantaro only lets deeper parts of himself slip out during Salmon Mode, and the first time was an accident. He doesn’t talk about his sisters to anybody. The only reason we know about them is through SM, during the last few ftes with him. Not even in the main game. He reveals that he stopped telling people about his missing sisters due to how people would tell him to give up, and he is so SO happy when Shuichi doesn’t doubt him. Rantaro needs someone to tell him that he CAN do it for a change, but he doesn’t give anyone the chance to.
Side note: I wish SM was canon sometimes, because it goes more in depth on the character’s flaws and tells us more about them than the main game can.
———— Taking Weight Off Your Shoulders
Rantaro and Kaito barely talk to each other in game. Hell, they barely interact even in the anthologies, which is where I usually get a lot of my rant content, explaining the lack of photo evidence in this one.
But the fact they are so similar yet so different stands out to me. They both need to open up more and let others listen to their problems, but their reasons for not doing so are completely different.
Kaito needs somebody he can confide in about his problems. I bet you Rantaro would be more than happy to take that weight off of Kaito’s shoulders, after all he knows bottling up emotions is bad (like the hypocrite he is /lh) and he’s listened to so much teary venting from his sisters that he knows it’s wonderful to get it out and is glad to lend an ear to the cause. He would definitely help Kaito through whatever rough patches he’s going through willingly.
Rantaro needs somebody he knows genuinely believes in him. Kaito would definitely bombard him with encouraging words and location proposals, even if a few are ridiculous. He would 100% help Rantaro search for his sisters when he can, after all he is an astronaut. He’d also encourage Rantaro to take it easy, he knows better than anyone that overworking yourself is bad (hypocrite #2, they’re working on it) and just taking a day off does wonders for your body.

———— Conclusion
Amamota is fucking awesome. I didn’t even get into any inherently romantic stuff (im not good at getting romantic stuff across cause to me lots of things can be read as platonic) but I know this fandom is pretty good at it lol. The only Amamota stuff i’ve seen is stuff from two years ago and the odd fanfic here and there.
Important Note: You don’t have to ship it romantically at all, I just wanted to shed light on how awesome of a duo this would be past the bare surface of their characters. I respect everyone’s ship opinions (within reason, there is some freaky ass stuff out there) and if you don’t think these two would interact romantically then that’s totally chill.
