It made me think that, instead of the reader apologizing and getting back together with them, she would end up having a low self-esteem crisis and saying that she didn't deserve everything they did to her and, most importantly, that it was a mistake to love her, since she devalued them even though they still loved her after the breakup and then asked him to leave and never come back. Like, maybe it's a version of a reader who ended up developing an inferiority complex after feeling so guilty and in her head that she doesn't deserve to be with him anymore (or maybe a way for her mind not to want to fall for his manipulations?).
