Izuku stared at his reflection with tired eyes. It had been a while since he had been treated so roughly by his former best friend, Katsuki Bakugou, he actually got punched today.
His cheek was red and already starting to swell, just his luck. Izuku knew he should’ve kept his mouth shut, but when people talked heroes, he couldn’t help himself.
Izuku sighed softly as he leaned over the sink in the boys’ bathrooms, using his fingertips to slowly and gingerly touch his sore cheek. The sharp pain was now a dull throb, sending slow and painful waves through his the right side of his face, and reminding him of how he pissed Katsuki off today.
He wasn’t sure how he was going to hide the dark bruise forming on his face. He had to come up with some excuse, so he didn’t worry his poor mother.
Izuku ran his fingers through his curly mop of hair and bit his lip to stop it from quivering. God was he really this pathetic? Not only could he not stand up for himself- well…not really anyway, but he was a crybaby on top of that. Of course.
After a short cry, and self-pity session in the bathroom, Izuku put his backpack on, and slowly trudged out of the bathroom. Izuku was an expert at keeping his head down, making himself small and invisible.
As he walked, Izuku kept his eyes glued to the tiled floor beneath his feet. He felt..hopeless? Maybe he felt angry, angry at his mom, at the world..who knows.
Izuku felt his face scrunch up as he fought to keep the tears at bay. Please not again. He thought over and over as the hot tears rolled down his cheeks.
He was so caught up in his own head, that he didn’t even notice the few delinquent students of Aldrea walking Izuku’s way down the hall.
He accidentally bumped his shoulder against one of the guys’ shoulder.
Great.
His head snapped up and he looked at the group;
There were 4 of them, 3 guys and a single girl.
“Just what the hell are you doin’ Deku? Bumpin’ into me like you own the place? You want to fuckin’ go right here?” The boy snapped, grabbing Izuku up by his uniform.
Izuku’s teary eyes were as wide as saucers, and he looked like a frightened animal, scared and panicked.
“What the hell is your deal!?” The other student practically shouted in Izuku’s face, a few droplets of his spit landing on Izuku’s freckled cheeks.
Izuku somehow managed to find his voice, choking out a few shaky words through his tears; “N-nothing! I-I’m sorry!” He sounded pathetic, because he knew he was at their mercy.
Meanwhile, you crossed your arms, watching your friend Kenji harass Midoriya over something so minuscule as bumping into him. “Ugh- Kenji, dude, get yourself together. It was an accident.”
Your words made your friend stop and turn to look at you. “Huh? Stay out of this, L/n, it’s none of your damn business.” He hissed, his eyes narrowing as he spoke.
You simply rolled your eyes. You’d tagged along with the…more troublesome group your whole life, and you weren’t exactly afraid of Kenji, a 5’6 boy who sounded more like a girl, than an actual guy.
“You’re gonna make us late to lunch, plus, the nerd’s already crying.” You gestured to Izuku’s face, tears still streaming down his cheeks and flooding his waterline. “So leave him be. He said sorry, move on.”
You didn’t know why you were even bothering to stick up for someone no one in the school particularly liked, but you were just in a good mood today; well..either that, or seeing the frightened look on Izuku’s face made your gut twist in…a weird way.
On Izuku’s end, he was completely shocked. Why was anyone even pushing for him in the first place? He knew you weren’t exactly sticking up for him, but you were still telling off your friend…
Izuku, while dumbfounded, took the opportunity to take in your appearance; to be completely honest, he thought you were pretty, even with a few bruises on your cheek, and a bandaid on your cheekbone. He kinda liked the rough edge your appearance had thanks to that little detail.
His heart swelled as he watched you bicker with the boy holding Izuku’s uniform, until eventually, Kenji’s patience ran out and he released Izuku.
“Fine! Just shut up already!” Kenji shouted irritably, making you roll your eyes and Izuku flinch. The other two students in your group sighed, one of them speaking up. “Can you two go a day without fighting? Please?” The other boy nodded in agreement and ran his fingers through his hair. “Christ, L/n and Kenji can never get along.” He grumbled.
You simply let out a huff of breath, choosing to brush off their comments then defend yourself when you knew they were kinda right. “Whatever, can we just get to lunch? I’m starving dude.” You said as you shoved your hands into your skirt pockets.
“Yeah yeah, whatever, what the girl said.” Agreed Kenji, who still looked a bit disgruntled that you’d pushed so firmly for him to drop Izuku’s accidental bump to the shoulder.
Your friends started to walk off and you weren’t far behind, however, as you did start to walk, you caught Izuku’s wide eyes. His eyes weren’t filled with fear and tears anymore, but instead they looked..awestruck.
A slight tinge of pink rose to your cheeks and you scoffed, rubbing the back of your neck and quickly looking away.
Izuku watched you walk off, his heart racing and his cheek— the once noticeable pain —suddenly didn’t hurt anymore, not that he could be bothered to pay attention to it anyway…he was still a bit too distracted by the face of the girl who’d stuck up for him, and the bandaid on her cheek.
He hoped he’d be able to talk to her again. Izuku slowly moved his gaze to the ground, before a small smile cracked his expression.
He didn’t think he’d be forgetting this experience any time soon.
