Curate, connect, and discover
I mean, if you think about all the other names Nightow came up with, it becomes no less ridiculous but just kinda…normal.
Writing fanfic sounds fun and may be a good way to test and develop my creative writing skills, but if I do there will come a time where I have to make the name Rocketbilly Redcadillac sound serious and I am NOT ready for that
Finally got these fuckers done yeah!!! It’s been a while since I put any effort into really drawing, especially for characters that I love. Because of Nightow’s character designs already being so shaped for me I decided to simplify their designs even more. This is also the first time I experimented with line weight and I only screwed up a few times :)
Here are the original sketches for funsies!
(I tried to simplify the designs as much as possible. I started drawing Bunji but I haven’t finished yet.)
"don't worry about it" ok but I will
This isn’t in any order or anything this is just a bunch of thoughts I’ve wanted to talk about regarding this lovely series.
Trigun/Gungrave narrative & themes comparison: On a scale of "love and peace" to "kick their ass"
Brandon Heat is a combination of both Vash and Wolfwood
Is Bunji Kugashira similar to Nicholas D. Wolfwood in certain aspects besides appearance?
Vash & Knives vs. Brandon & Harry: Expectations of trust/loyalty
Bunji Kugashira's hangups about brothers (first Juji then Brandon?)
What's the history between the Kugashira brothers?
How canon is the Gungrave anime to the first Gungrave video game? Was Overdose supposed to bridge the two (appearance of Sherry???)
Why isn't there more Gungrave/Trigun crossover content?
Tsuneo Imahori is so good at music dude: How the Gungrave soundtracks create another layer of atmosphere & emotion
What the fuck was up with Gungrave VR & Gungrave G.O.R.E.?
How and why is Rocketbilly Redcadillac?
I want to see more hijinks with Juji and RB, they are sooooo
Why is Juji not in G.O.R.E.? (Sad but probably not canon idea that he was eventually overcome by the SEED in him)
What it's like to be a deadman aka why don't we let the Gungrave cast experience body horror too
Madhouse wanted the Gungrave anime to be a spiritual successor of the 1998 Trigun anime
Will there ever be another entry in the franchise after G.O.R.E.?
Trigun and Gungrave say aliens are real folks (maybe canon maybe not)
Beyond the Grave & Vincent Valentine: Two ultra sad goth bois that just want to take a nap in their coffins
Feel free to make your own post for any of these ideas or something. As I said before my activity on this blog is going to be pretty inconsistent so don’t expect anything from me anytime soon. Then again just last night I started writing a short little Juji story but I don’t know when I’m gonna finish it. I also plan to do fanart but motivation to draw has honestly become more evasive than wanting to write. If you have any questions or suggestions I’d love to read them in the comments or tags at least. See you guys later!
so now that everyone has caught up on the various trigun canons, i humbly suggest obsessing over yasuhiro nightow’s other work – starting with this ancient anime: gungrave.

never must stop, it's stealing my heart
It's the fun kind of a character dynamic.
I’ve been rewatching the Gungrave anime with my sister and during the ‘Harry’ episode I had a sudden thought. Does anybody in the Gungrave fandom (at least on this site) actually like Harry? I don’t mean like as in ‘he’s a standup guy’ or whatever. I mean from an antagonist/character perspective does anyone find him compelling or interesting? Do you think he fills his role in the story well or do you think they could have done more with Harry? I’d love to hear any thoughts on this. Could be about his anime and/or video game incarnation.
is the gungrave fandom real please tell me u guys r real i want friends
Nightow is the kind of writer who creates characters out of suffering, who are designed to suffer constantly, and who die still suffering. And he makes you care about them for the rest of your life.
Real ✊🏽😔
Yasuhiro Nightow will make a character called "Shoehorn the Cowboot" and his special moveset will be destroying the familial bonds between your family and friends and throwing grenade shaped boots at you.
I eat that shit up every time
the world just spins whilst mine stands still nothing's changed in your gravity grave
What I love about both Trigun and Gungrave, is that it shows the vulnerability of men in such an unfiltered way. Nightow gives us men that are powerful and scary and feared among people, even their own peers, but always lets them have a certain softness at their core and allows them to be humans that cry like infants when they lose a loved one and feel intense emotions. I love it so much because it tackles the bullshit idea that men have to cast aside their emotions to be strong. You can tell, no matter how badass these characters are and no matter the stupid decisions they make, that all they want is to be loved dearly.
Also the key for these characters to improve their mental state is NEVER to put up even higher walls, but to let people in and help them. They get better by allowing other people to love them, even when they feel so so undeserving of it because of past sins and mistakes they made. It's fucking amazing.
goddd i love the woodwinds on the gungrave anime ost. i think it's bassoon on "blue of blue", "my old friend", and "gone fishing" like damn it just sounds so good and heavy and melancholy idk how to describe it lol it works so nicely. excellent performances excellent musician(s) idk i'll look at liner notes later
More unusual Grave screenshots because I can
people are designing modern manga characters thinking they should be animator friendly/not too complex/coherent,,,,,,,
meanwhile Nightow in the 1990s:
So I'm watching Gungrave and...
IS THAT YOU WOLFWOOD???
And LIVIO???
Nightow loved his blorbos so much he reincarnated them, huh.
(spoiler warning for the first Gungrave game, Gungrave Overdose, Trimax and the Trigun 98 anime I guess??)
Look, I know everyone and their grandma has made a comparison post between Wolfwood and Bunji but do you know what's even worse? The first time Wolfwood kicks the bucket ever is in the 98 anime by fighting his mentor, getting shot and then dying in an abandoned church.
Meanwhile what does Bunji do the first time he keels over in Gungrave ? That's right, he fights his mentor, gets shot and dies in an abandoned church (with slight nuance but still).
(Also don't forget that the second time both of these sh*theads meet their ends (in Trigun Maximum and Gungrave Overdose respectively), it's partially thanks to the involvement of their respective white-haired younger brothers they hadn't seen in ages.)
Anyway, what the f*ck Nightow.
