You had been partners with Root for a while now, working on high-stakes missions and trying to keep up with the enigmatic hacker's unpredictable nature. Tonight's mission was particularly intense, involving a dangerous group that could compromise national security. The two of you had just narrowly escaped a close call, and you were both panting, trying to catch your breaths in the dimly lit alley.

Root had been her usual confident and fearless self throughout the operation, but something about tonight had been different. Maybe it was the way her eyes seemed more focused, her movements slightly less fluid than usual. It gnawed at the back of your mind, but you pushed it aside, too wrapped up in the mission to dwell on it.

However, as you both retreated to a safer location to regroup, you finally noticed it. A gash on Root's arm, oozing blood. You rushed over, your concern immediately taking over.

"Root, you're hurt!" you exclaimed, carefully examining the wound.

"It's just a scratch," Root brushed it off, but the pain in her eyes was undeniable.

"Just a scratch?" Your voice was laced with anger and fear. "You could have been seriously hurt! Why didn't you say anything? Why didn't you take better care of yourself?"

Root met your gaze, her own eyes softening as she realized the gravity of the situation and your genuine worry for her. She opened her mouth to respond but found herself at a loss for words. Instead, she did something unexpected. She leaned in and pressed her lips to yours, silencing your concerns with a passionate kiss.

The kiss was a mixture of relief and frustration, a silent apology for not being more careful and an expression of gratitude for your unwavering concern. As the seconds passed, you melted into the kiss, your anger dissipating as quickly as it had come. Root pulled away, her eyes locked onto yours.

The mission had started like any other, with John Reese and Y/N going undercover to infiltrate a secretive organization. John was the stoic, experienced operative, and Y/N was the brilliant yet shy analyst who had surprised everyone with their quick thinking and determination. As they blended into their new identities, neither of them could predict just how sideways things would go.

The air was thick with tension as they navigated the dimly lit room, surrounded by individuals who could sniff out deception with ease. Y/N's nerves were palpable, and John could sense their unease. John's gaze softened as he looked at them, his fingers brushing a strand of hair away from their face. "It's not your fault. We'll get through this."

As he continued tending to their wound, John's lecturing began. He chided Y/N for not being cautious enough, for letting their nerves get the best of them. "You need to be more aware of your surroundings," he admonished, his voice firm.

Y/N nodded, their cheeks flushed with embarrassment. "I'll try to do better next time."

John sighed, his gaze meeting Y/N's for a moment. And then, almost as if it slipped out unintentionally, he muttered, "You know, I can't afford to lose you."

Y/N's heart skipped a beat at the intensity in his eyes and the weight of his words. Did he just…?

"What?" they managed to stammer, their voice barely a whisper.

John's expression turned slightly startled, as if he hadn't meant to reveal his thoughts. He cleared his throat, trying to regain his composure. "I mean, we're a team, and I need you to be on your game."

But Y/N could see through the facade. There was something more in his eyes, a depth of emotion he hadn't meant to show.

With a newfound courage fueled by the rush of adrenaline and the vulnerability of the moment, Y/N reached out and placed a hand over John's, which was still holding the cloth. i really wish just SOME writers on tv right now had the like, really intrinsic, focused understanding of faith and religion that's present in person of interest, with Root's devotion to the machine, to the ideal of cybernetic enhancement, but also like. to HAROLD by extension

like the way she sees harold as her father in some ways because she sees him as THE father, not bc she sees him as a father FIGURE, not because she needs or wants his approval or his parenthood, but bc he is the originator of a GOD, her god

like i fucking wish that anyone who wrote for a fantasy show with ACTUAL paladins and witches w faith etc had this level of depth or complexity in their presentation or exploration of the feelings involved bc i love it

TV Shoutout: Person of Interest

Person of Interest, the best underrated show on TV.

What it is about: A recluse billionaire (Michael Emerson) hires an ex-military (Jim Caviezel) to help people he knows are in danger, from a mysterious source.

Why you should watch it: The series is produced by Jonathan Nolan, brother of movie director Christopher Nolan (Batman's The Dark Knight Trilogy, Interstellar, etc). They do have the same flair and trademark realistic style of filmmaking, but Jonathan is much, much better at portraying character drama.

Basically, there are 2 distinct reasons why Person of Interest is such a great series. One, for it's characters. Person of Interest does an excellent job at developing the characters throughout the series, on a level that you have never seen on a typical procedural. It deals in the grey area of surveillance, organized crime and politics, and there were a lot of subverting tropes that makes it very fresh, and quite a lot genuinely funny moments in a seemingly serious show.

Two, for its portrayal of Artificial Intelligence (AI) (yes, there's an AI in this show). While the show started as a standard case-of-the-week procedural, later it digs more into the nature AI as an all-seeing eye. Very slowly but surely, it turned into a critical discussion on why, what, and how such AI would be like in our world. It portrays AI as a sympathetic but growing entity in a way that, I must again say, is rarely seen on popular entertainment. It might seem unlikely at the start, but Person of Interest has grown into one of the best sci-fi show on television right now, but I can honestly say non-scifi fan would also enjoy it from a pure action, conspiracy, and character perspective. If you don't believe me, just read this 

What else? Because of its top notch, Emmy-level acting (that nobody’s bothered to give awards to)? Because of its badassery? Because Amy Acker is enough to melt your hearts away? Because it has Taraji P. Henson (Cookie in Empire, a great show and actress in their own right)? Because of an adorable dog? Take your pick.

Where to start: Person of Interest is procedural, and I know most episodes in most procedural shows are entirely skippable, but I urge you against skipping anything in Person of Interest even though yes, there are filler episodes. Yes, some episodes contribute less than others to the bigger arc, but a lot of seemingly "case/number-of-the-week" episodes (especially the early ones) helps humanizing and characterizing each of the main characters: Finch, Reese, etc., and even The Machine (the previously mentioned AI). Those character-heavy episodes helped a lot to understand and love each of them.

If you so must insist to skip anything, there's a handy guide to episodes that deal mostly about the bigger arc, but only for first season and the beginning of the second. If you've watched those and liked them, then again I urge you to revisit the episodes you skipped and see if you like them too (I hope you do).

I do have to say though, while I liked Person of Interest from the beginning, it had a shaky start and did not feel particularly special until halfway of the first season (after, I believe, its mid-season break at 11th episode). By that time, they had newfound confidence in the concept of the show and had started to actually have fun with it, although it has always been a compelling show. And there were moments, even in the fourth season, where you might feel things slow down, but it was all for a reason and by the end of the season it will all be worth it. In short: it's not mandatory to watch all of the episodes, but it’s strongly advised if you can.

Where it is at: Fourth season had just ended, and it’s very likely that it’ll be renewed for season 5.
