Got asked about tips for figure drawing and…I have a lot to say! I thought to just catalogue what I’ve been doing to build up my figure drawing knowledge and habit, so hopefully this is a useful reference for anyone interested in figure drawing :)

Her’s some more Big Hero 6 concept art. I worked on the sets for the Campus Tech building and the interior labs of the “Nerd School”. It was always part of Hiro’s story that he was a genius kid, but messy. The top drawing is for the Lab he shared with Tadashi in an earlier form of the story, and the bottom is his horribly cluttered desk space. In an earlier version of this drawing he had manga pinned up, but it got changed to bees and ants. Supposedly he’s studying bees and ant colonies as part of his microbot research.
Some early exploration on Gogo.. Disney’s first Korean character, I drew upon my experience with “tough” 누나 stereotypes while mixing it in with the bike messenger/trick culture of San Francisco~ I also wanted to step away from the stereotypical “disney” female proportion and tried to caricature the typical “radish” ankle korean girl type (ask some Korean friends and they’ll let you know what that means..) I read up on a article that the reason why korean speed skaters are so great at speed skating might have to do with their natural proportions.. which matched perfectly with Gogo’s skating attribute!
*although I saw tattoos on almost every San Franciscan female bike messenger on the internet, we had to get rid of the tattoos! : (
These drawings helped me define Hiro not just as a design but as a real character to me.. The goal was to make a model sheet of him but I also wanted to use it as a opportunity to make them “slices of life” moments for Hiro.. There was more development after this, but this was a important point where I felt I began to relate Hiro as a believable character.. (The pose where he uses his foot to scratch his calf was something I used to do as a teenager..)
style guide for the sculptural aesthetics we were going for~ Sculptors like Georg Kolbe, Giacomo Manzu, and of course the amazing Kent Melton were sources of inspiration.. I also looked at painters like Enoch Bolles and Pete Hawley who also stylize plane changes and simplify their work when they render with light..
This is part of a lecture I gave for the leadership to analyze the importance of editorializing in Milt Kahl’s work and how to apply some of the principles in our film for Big Hero 6…
