Dangerously In Love

Dangerously In Love

Summary: The long awaited return of your boyfriend makes you realize how in love you are with him. Dangerously in love with him.

Word Count: 776

Warnings: heavy make-out, second person pov, gender neutral reader, inspired by Beyonce's Dangerously In Love

A/N: I'm not sure how much of it makes sense or if it's even like logical. Literally just cooked this up 45 mins ago because i kept thinking about the 'dangerously in love' trend that was on tiktok like a month ago. But hope you enjoy nonetheless.

To say that Y/n was obsessed with Spencer Reid would be an understatement.

Well not obsessed in the bad way. But in the way where you’re so irrevocably in love with him that any chance you get you’re all over him loving him in the best way possible.

Spencer had just recently gotten home from a 2 week long case in Nevada. The serial killer in question kept real close to his pattern and didn’t devolve until his main stressor had died. But in the end they had caught him and convicted him with no error.

So when it was 10 pm on a Thursday and Hotch was kind enough to give them that Friday to rest Spencer had never been more delighted to drag his feet through his shared apartment to find you sitting on the couch watching reruns of Grey’s Anatomy he’s never felt more at home.

He toed off his shoes to then place them on the shoe rack that came with you when you moved in. He then took off his messenger bag and placed it on the ground before rounding the couch to sit next to you.

Now, you weren’t a profiler by any means. Just a simple bookstore owner, but you’ve always had a knack for knowing when your space wasn’t just yours alone.

So when you heard the front door unlock and open, you knew that your baby was home. You listened to him settle himself back into your home before listening to him approach you.

Spencer looked amazing. He didn’t think so, but having missed him for 2 weeks you couldn’t stop yourself from drinking him in. Said man only meant to bend down and give you a few kisses, a greeting of sorts. But you, you didn’t want to let him go.

So when Spencer bent down from his tall height to kiss your lips, you were quick to pull him into you, causing him to collapse onto the couch to devour him.

Spencer knew you missed him, the late night phone calls and the constant text messages were enough evidence to prove it. But he must have miscalculated how much you actually missed him.

Your body had been angled on the couch so one leg was extended and the other was bent in half, but with the added person, your body had shifted enough to accommodate him to where he was pulled onto lap. Spencer was quick enough to catch most of himself from completely falling on top of you.

But you couldn’t care less.

Your lips continued to devour Spencer’s. Pulling his lips (mainly the bottom one) into your mouth again and again. Pulling oxygen in with every pull. Making it so he couldn’t pull away at any moment.

Spencer, who had missed you just as much, kissed back with just as much force. His hand that wasn’t responsible for holding his body weight had cupped the back of your neck to angle your neck up a bit more so he could deepen the kiss.

His tongue began to dance with yours as you slid your body down the couch so you could make the man you love place his body weight on top of you. He followed suit, leaning down enough to have his chest against yours. Spencer placed his free hand against your waist, grabbing the soft flesh there.

You began making a move of turning over so you could look down at the masterpiece before you. Your hands, which had been wrapped around his neck and playing ruthlessly with his beautiful hair, dragged themselves down his chest. Feeling everything about him that you’ve missed.

Spencer was the one to pull back enough to grab a deeper breath of air. His brown eyes glossed over with love. His lips were swollen and glossy. You continued to kiss him, the corner of his mouth, his cheek, his jaw, his Adam's apple, the sides of his neck, his collar bones.

His scent alone was driving you mad, the feeling of him just within your hold was enough to satisfy you.

Seeing his face was enough to make your heart sing. To love him, to hold him, to feel him, to breathe him in, to live him.

You were dangerously in love with him. Obsessed with him. Enraptured with him.

You sat back on your calves. Looking and the beauty beneath you. His tousled hair, his swollen and glossy lips, his lidded eyes.

Your Spencer, looking at you like you were a deity.

Only for him to see the same look within your eyes.

“I’m so in love with you.”

So very dangerously in love.

Not Of The Imagination

Not Of The Imagination

Summary: Spencer claims he has a girlfriend. Derek does not believe him at all.

Word Count: 1,614

Warnings: fluff, a bit OOC Derek

Derek Morgan is a ladies man. He knows how to talk to women, charm them into a flustered mess and get a number from them with ease. His charm is a weapon, something he knows how to use better than his gun.

Spencer Reid is not a ladies man. He rambles people away and becomes flustered so easily that people think his skin tone is red.

Derek Morgan is a charmer. Spencer Reid is the charmed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Friday afternoon. Everyone was ready to go home and spend the weekend doing whatever they wanted. Weekend plans were the topic of conversation at the moment with the bullpen attendees.
“So pretty boy, where are you doing this weekend?” Morgan asked. A teasing smile playing on his lips. Derek Morgan wasn’t a bully. He was anything but a bully, however, he was a brother. And brothers are known to tease their little siblings to no end. And Spencer was lucky enough to become Derek’s little brother.
 “There’s this Korean Film festival happening throughout the next week. All foods, music and movies will be played in korean. Which is exciting since my girlfriend had wanted to brush up on her language skills and I thought this would be a great surprise for her.” Spencer missed the look of surprise on his friends faces when the word ‘girlfriend’ had left his mouth. Especially Morgan’s face.
“Girlfriend?” Emily questioned softly. She was still a bit new to the team, but this was the first time a girlfriend was mentioned, especially attached to Spencer’s name.
“Wait what! Spencer, you have a girlfriend?” Derek questioned in disbelief. It’s not like he didn’t think that Spencer couldn’t get a girlfriend, but it’s still a complete shock that the shy, can’t talk to college kids his age, stuttering mess actually has a girlfriend.
“Yeah, Her name’s Y/n. We’ve actually been dating for about 3 years now.” The goofy grin that broke out onto Spencer’s face was convincing enough for the women. But apparently not enough for Derek.
“Really?” Spencer could hear the disbelief in Derek’s voice. He knew that the proclaimed ladies man, didn’t believe that he ‘scored’. But Spencer really didn’t care if he believed him or not.
He still had you at the end of the day, that’s all that mattered to him.
“Okay, what’s her last name?” Morgan asked.
“L/n.” Spencer answered without hesitation. He had a feeling that some of the asked questions are going to be the same that his mother asked him when he confessed that he was seeing someone.
Derek nodded, trying to look convinced. “What’s her-”
Before he even had the chance to finish his next question Spencer beat him to it. “She’s working as a barista at the moment because she’s going back to school to be a teacher. We met when we were 20 and started dating at 22. She’s kind and patient. She also really loves me and we are talking about moving in together after she graduates with her masters.”
The small group was stunned at the flood of information. Emily, JJ and Penelope all began gushing about his girlfriend, happy that their resident genius had found someone that is making him happy.
Derek, happy for his brother, still didn’t believe him. The girl sounded perfect for him, too perfect. Almost like he had conjured her up.
“Do you have a picture of her?” Penelope was the first to ask.
“No, sadly. All the pictures we have together are taken on her phone and they don’t transfer well when she sends them to me.” Spencer explained. The women deflated a bit hearing his explanation.
“How convenient.” Morgan muttered. Penelope was the one who heard him. She snapped her head in his direction, fixing him with a glare. Derek only held his hands up in mock surrender.
The group slowly began to disperse when paperwork began to pile up on each of their respective desks. The new shift of conversation began to fizzle out. Everyone now began to focus on the important work ahead of them before they could go home at 6.
Except for Derek Morgan. The new revelation, still fresh in his brain. The Spencer Reid, the boy genius that stutters when given a simple compliment, has a girlfriend.
He has to see it to believe it at that point.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Derek didn’t get his confirmation until 3 months later. When he had almost forgotten that Spencer had claimed he had a girlfriend.

A beautiful h/c had walked into the bullpen with a visitor badge clipped to her turtleneck sweater. She had a drink carrier in on hand and a plastic bag in the other.

She stood near the glass doors, clearly looking for someone. A small frown appeared on her lips as the object of her delivery seemed to not be in the room.

Morgan saw the contemplation on her face whether she was on the right floor or not. She took a step back towards the double glass doors, before Derek got up to give a helping hand.

He calmly approached the pretty woman before calling out to her, “Excuse me miss, is there something you need help with.”

The h/c turned at his voice, Derek could see slight recognition within her eyes. A small smile graced her lips before she spoke, “You must be Derek Morgan.”

The named man furrowed his eyebrows. He had never met this woman before in his life, even if he had Derek would’ve remembered her face.

The woman saw the confusion on his face as well as the slight guard he put up after she said his name. The h/c’s realization kicked in and her panic set in. “Oh no, I’m not dangerous. My boyfriend had told me a lot about you. Even showed me a photo of you. Well not of you but a group picture and pointed you out. And I’ve always been good at remembering faces. So when I saw you I just knew that you were Derek Morgan. Again I’m not dangerous.”

Her lengthy explanation reminded him of the resident genius that was approaching the two of them.

Spencer was very confused when he saw Derek Morgan speaking with his girlfriend of 3 years. He was even more confused when he saw her panicked expression and the slight wave of her hands as she tried to explain something.

Spencer pulled open the glass doors to the bullpen and turned towards the interesting conversation that was happening. He didn’t get much of it, just the last bit where Y/n said ‘I’m not dangerous’.

“What’s going on here?” The brunette male asked. He looked between his favorite people waiting for one of them to answer.

“Oh, hello love. I was just coming over to see if you wanted to have lunch with me. I had a half day at work for class but then my professor canceled class last minute because he wasn’t feeling well.” Y/n had gestured to the food in her arms at the mention of lunch.

She had swung by their favorite Thai place. Having not been there for a few weeks because of Spencer’s busy schedule and Y/n’s guilt for eating it without him. Spencer smiled widely at the offer of food and his lover for his break.

“I’d love to honey. We can eat at my desk if you’d like.” Spencer offered. Grabbing the drinks from her to make the load easier to carry.

Derek watched the exchange between them. Only putting everything together when you call Spencer ‘love’.

“Holy shit she’s real.” He had meant to say it in his head. But the statement slipped out, causing the two of you to look at him with confusion.

“You didn’t think she was real?” Spencer asked.

“Well, no. Just that she sounded really perfect for you so I had a hard time believing it at first. But then I met her and she literally reminded me of you.” Derek tried to explain but it didn’t sound all too convincing.

Spencer and Y/n looked at each other before laughing. Y/n had just met Derek and he thought she was someone that Spencer made up. Their giggles made Derek feel stupid.

And that’s something he doesn’t feel often (not counting the times Spencer made him feel stupid).

Y/n had calmed down first before holding out her free hand for Derek to shake, “Hi, my name is Y/n L/n. I’m going back to school to be a teacher but currently I’m working as a barista. I’ve been told I’m patient and kind. Spencer and I have been dating since we were 22 but we met when we were 20.”

Y/n then spared a glance at Spencer before asking, “Same intro you gave him right?”

Spencer nodded with a smile before kissing the crown of her head, “Yep same one you gave to my mom.”

Derek looked between the young couple content on the evidence presented to him. Derek took Y/n’s hand and shook it giving a greeting of his own, “It’s nice to meet you Y/n. I’m Derek Morgan and I’ve become Spencer’s big brother. So don’t you go breaking his heart.”

The toothy smile was answer enough, but Y/n couldn’t resist her response, “Wouldn’t dream of it.”

Spencer had excused the two of them to go eat lunch at his desk. Spencer was happy that his lives were starting to blend together.

He’s especially glad that his favorite people were able to meet each other once and for all. Even though one of them thought the other was a figment of his imagination.

Overshare

Overshare

Summary: Y/n and Spencer spend the night together after a long case. Next day JJ and Penelope hear all about it.

Word Count: 2,147

Warning: implied smut, teasing Spencer, Y/n being a chronic over sharer, smooth y/n at the end, heavily inspired by Taylor Swift Wildest Dreams

Heavy breathing and moaning filled the air. The couple had been reunited for 4 hours.

First hour was Spencer watching Y/n work about within her bookstore. The store Dreamy Books was closing for the night at 11 o’clock. After Spencer had gotten back to the BAU and filled out as much paperwork as he could before he left to meet up with his girlfriend.

He called her and was told to go home and that she’ll meet him there if he wanted, only for him to refuse and show up at the store anyways. Y/n greeted him anyways and continued to close down for the night, saying goodbye to her employees and reshelving any stray books.

The next hour they went to get dinner and head home, Thai being one of the only things that sounded good. And once they reached home, the two of them had set up to eat. Spence went and showered and Y/n set up their plates.

They spent another hour eating and catching up on TV or what they had been doing. Y/n was doing most of the talking since Spencer didn’t want to talk about his case, claiming that it was a bad one.

She mainly talked about business and having a friend's date with Penny and Jen. Spencer listened intently, happy to be home with his Y/n. His gaze was loving and longing, the unsub’s victims had looked like Y/n. It didn’t help that he could only call her at night, so he would worry all day. Spencer’s smart mind loved to play tricks on him, making him think that all the women were her.

Y/n had reached across the table, grabbed his hand. She saw the far away look in his eyes like he was lost within his head. “Honey? Are you there?”

Her voice was sweet, loving, something that he was all too familiar with. He squeezed her hand, coming back to the present.

“Yeah, I’m here.” Spencer responded, glad to have his rock with him. He tried to sound convincing but it didn’t work. Y/n had gotten up and walked towards him.

Spencer followed her with his eyes, she ran her fingers through his hair, scratching his scalp, making him hum in approval. He leaned into her touch, allowing Y/n to pull him into her.

His sitting height makes him tall enough to have his head within her breast. Spence inhaled her scent, missing the sweet smell of her perfume. She knew that the case seemed to hit a little close to home.

“As long as you’re out there taking down the bad guys, I’ll be safe.” Y/n reassured. Knowing particularly hard cases left him spaced. Away from reality, away from her.

She tilted his head up, meeting each other’s gaze. Spencer’s gaze held love but now they held lust. Being away from his love made him want her even more.

Y/n’s eyes mimicked his own. She leaned down and kissed him, the first was sweet. The next was also sweet but it had a need. A need that was not ignored.

Spencer grabbed onto her waist, pulling her onto his lap. He was not going to let go, not for a while.

The last hour was spent within the bed. Both of them satisfying the need that had built.

Y/n and Spencer had laid together wrapped up in each other's arms. Spencer had his head resting on Y/n’s chest, softly kissing against her skin.

“Careful now, you might get me going again.” The tease was clear as day within Y/n’s voice. They both knew that they were too tired to have another round.

“I’ll keep that in mind.” Spencer replied, his kisses didn’t cease, but they stayed away from her sweet spots. He was tired, he wanted to just fall asleep within her arms for as long as possible.

Y/n kissed his head and continued to get comfy, she was glad that her Spencer is home. Glad that her bed is warm with his body in it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The morning light shone through, the sage curtains still being drawn open from the day before. Spencer shifted in his position, not welcoming the sunlight. He reached towards Y/n, wanting to cuddle some more before the both of them had to start their day.
As his hand patted slightly warm sheets he rose his head and watched as Y/n applied light make up in the bathroom connected within the master bedroom.
“Hey baby. I tried to be as quiet as possible, hope I didn’t wake you.”
“No, it was the sun. Where are you going?” Spencer asked, raising slightly.
“Brunch with Jen and Penny. They were able to spare an hour or two before heading to work and Sophie is opening the store so I can be a little late.” Y/n rubbed her lips together after applying a gloss. She turned towards Spencer and smiled.
He smiled in return, taking in her pretty appearance. Y/n had kneeled on the bed and kissed Spencer three times before leaning back and grabbing her phone on the bedside table.
“I’ll give you a text when I get there and when I head to the store.” Y/n offered, knowing how paranoid Spence can be. A lot of the victims that he’s seen have been plucked off the streets, he didn’t want that to be her.
“Okay, I’ll text you when I get into the BAU.” Spencer replied. As much as he wanted Y/n safe, she wanted him equally as safe.
Y/n grinned at his response and grabbed her purse. “Okay, I love you and I’ll see you tonight.”
“I love you more.”
Y/n blew him a kiss and walked out, Spencer had caught it as he watched her go. He listened to the front door shut and then laid himself back down.
Spence checked the time before closing his eyes. He didn’t need to be in the BAU until noon and it was only 10. He closed his eyes wanting to get a little more sleep before having to get up and start his day officially.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Y/n had walked into the small cafe and saw the two blondes at a table waiting for her arrival. Y/n thought she was late seeing that the two were already there.

“Oh, am I late?” Y/n asked, her voice sounding upset.

“No you're not late, we had just got here. Penelope was first I think.” JJ said. Having known Y/n the longest, the woman’s distaste for being late is something she’s always had.

“Oh good.” Y/n’s charming smile returned as she placed her purse on her chair and went to give each woman a hug. Penelope’s happy smile reflected her own as the two embraced. A squeeze and a sway was how they hugged. The two giggly at their reunion.

Y/n switched to JJ, careful of the baby bump that’s forming. The two shared a happy hug before the h/c moved to her seat across from them.

The girls chatted happily about many things from Penelope’s knitting projects to JJ’s baby and how her and Will are doing as well as Penelope and Kevin.

With the conversation of relationships in the air, both women turned toward Y/n and began the questions.

“So you mentioned that you started seeing someone a while back,” JJ leaded, making Y/n aware of what they wanted to ask. “What’s he like? Where’d you meet?”

“Is he good?”

“He’s kind and smart. We actually met at my store, he wanted to try something new, something he’s never read before. So I gave him a fantasy.” Y/n recounted a smile on her face when she remembered Spencer walking in looking lost and flustered. “He finished it in a day. I was so surprised.”

The FBI agents listened intently to Y/n as she talked. Her happy smile made the two women smile in return. As JJ listened she remembered Spencer reading something during a small break. It was almost like he was drawn to it.

“Awe, that's so cute. It sounds like a romance book.” Penelope cooed, but her previous question was unanswered and she was not going to give up that easily. “But is he good?”

Y/n had intentionally ignored Penny. She didn’t want to share too much, but her persistence was annoying and admiral. Y/n flushed a little before she searched for an explanation that could satisfy Penny’s curiosity.

“Well I’d say he’s real good.” Y/n grinned giddily, still slightly flushed. “We had spent the night together. His hands were in my hair, his clothes were in my room.”

“No way!” Penelope squealed. It sounded just like a romance novel and Penelope wanted to get her hands on it ASAP.

JJ listened intently, always wanting to know the latest gossip. She listened as Y/n described her boyfriend, disregarding the sexual details. Even though JJ isn’t a trained profiler, she can put things together.

And what she found was equivalent to gold.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
JJ and Penelope arrived at the BAU around the same time. Both of them discussed what had occurred at brunch, especially since the topic of their discussion had walked right into the bullpen just as they did.
Spencer walked into the BAU looking at his phone. A smile playing onto his lips, he was texting a reply before putting his phone away. He looked up as he walked towards his desk. He felt the eyes on him only to see JJ and Penelope looking at him.
His eyebrows frowned before he kept moving. Spencer became comfortable within his desk ready to do a work day. However, before he could even get his coffee JJ and Penelope had swarmed his desk. This caught the attention of Emily and Derek who were actually working.
“Hey Penelope, didn’t you have fun at brunch today?” JJ asked, she was baiting him, seeing if he’ll put everything together himself.
“You know what JJ I really did. Especially since we got to meet up with Y/n after so long.” Penelope said, playing along.
It seemed to be working, Spencer’s head popped up at the mention of his girlfriend's name. He didn’t want to be so obvious but his mind worked faster than most, maybe even too fast.
“Me too. And isn’t it great that the guy she’s seeing is so kind.” JJ continued, noticing Spencer’s change in posture.
“She said ‘kind and smart’. That they met at her book store, isn’t that romantic.” Penelope recounted.
Spencer now knew. He knew that the names of Jen and Penny were nicknames (like he suspected) and those nicknames were for Jennifer aka JJ and Penelope. His co-workers. His girlfriend’s best friend’s were his co-workers and he never knew.
“Plus she said that he was good.” JJ teased. Spencer flushed, Y/n had a bit of a problem with oversharing. Not that he personally minded but when it came to others he preferred she’d at least keep some information to herself.
“Yeah, they spent the night together too.” Penelope continued to tease. She saw his flustered appearance. Derek and Emily had caught on already. They watched with amusement as JJ and Penelope teased the kid genius.
This was way better than paperwork.
“What did she say exactly?” Emily asked. She wanted to see how far this will go before he cracked.
“‘His hands were in her hair. His clothes were in her room’.” JJ recited. Spencer’s flustered expression had grown even more. At this moment, he wanted to have never left Y/n’s apartment. That the two of them spent the day together instead of doing anything else.
“What else did she say?” Derek prodded, amusement clear on his face.
Before anything else could be revealed about himself Spencer spoke, “What was discussed between JJ, Penelope and my girlfriend should be private. So let’s leave it at that.”
His tone was snippy, wanting to stop everything. The group laughed at his response, knowing he meant no harm. JJ and Penelope gave him a small squeeze of the shoulder and uttered an apology for the teasing.
Spence waved them off before pulling out his phone and texting the topic of his teasing.
‘I love you so much but do you always talk about our private life with your friends?’ After he hit send, a reply came within 3 minutes.
‘Sorry my love :( ’ Before he could reply another text was sent.
‘But at least everyone knows you’re my handsome man ;) ’
Spencer grinned and sighed lovingly at his girlfriend’s message, making the teasing almost worth it. His phone buzzed again and in came one more text, one that left him smiling for the rest of the day.
‘You’re something I’ll relieve constantly, like a wildest dream.
Creativity
Creativity
Summary: Y/n is a photographer and Spencer is a great model.
Word Count: 1,135
Warnings: fluff, kisses, probably false statistics, giggly spence at the end.
November 4th.
That was the deadline of when Y/n’s assignment was due.
That date was one week away and she had no idea what the hell she was going to do. The whole class was given three weeks to complete the assignment and Y/n was running out of time.
She’s an aspiring photographer.
Several of her works have been published in magazines and have won many contests. She even has a website dedicated to her photos as well as other young photographers wanting to pursue their passions.
However, most of her clients don’t want an amatrue to take any of their photos, hence the course. Even though her boyfriend, Spence, has rattled off statics about not needing classes to become a photographer; it still made her feel better: more official
But now, her photography course is requiring her to submit new artwork instead of some of her old pieces. The professor said he ‘wanted to put their learning to use and catch something they’ve never thought of before.’
Y/n hated it. She was hitting deadend after deadend. Everything she’s shot is within her comfort zone, not new.
With a loud groan Y/n threw her head back on the couch she was perched on. Spencer only rounded the end the moment she was looking up at their light tan ceiling.
“Still can’t find anything?” Spencer asked. His tone knowing the answer, but wanting to be caring still.
“Not a thing.” Y/n replied, enunciating every word in the sentence. Spencer looked at her with a sympathetic look. Knowing the frustration not being able to achieve something.
He thought about the requirements of the assignment, having told him once she first got it. Spence wanted to help, he really did, but it was the first time he’s drawn a blank.
“I have no clue what to do. All the photos I’ve taken are like the ones I’ve taken before.” Y/n raised her head and looked at her boyfriend of a year. “Nothing new, nothing that’s caught my eye.”
“You know statically, most photographers set up their master photos. All of them have been staged and made to look candid. A lot of the photographs that I’ve studied since you’ve started your classes I’ve noticed that a lot of the items seemed to be perfectly placed. Just like it was made to be a photoshoot of some sort. While a lot of your works are within the moment, scenery or candid of people.” Spencer rambled. Y/n watched him intently as he talked, never liking to cut him off once he started, “So I believe that your professor is asking you to do something of the sort, to make a piece that you have to stage. I would suggest using someone that you are comfortable with, which will trigger a higher dopamine output as well as a higher serotonin that allows cognitive flexibility and an increase in mood.”
Y/n looked at Spence. A sparkle within her eye that Spencer knew to be trouble.
“Comfortable, staged and someone I know.” Y/n summarized, Spencer nodded along enthusiastically, always touched when someone listened to him all the way through.
“Yep.”
“Well then, pretty boy, I just found my client.” Y/n said, her eyes sparking with, what Spence can only describe as creativity. And lust.
The nickname alone should’ve told him that he wasn’t going to like this idea nor was he going to be the most comfortable with it. However, when Y/n had jumped up from her seat and started to set up her equipment with a huge smile on her face, Spence couldn’t really say no.
Y/n had placed one of their kitchen chairs in the living room (after she moved everything out of the way). Claiming that it was perfect. Her lights and camera were setup to where he supposed was his place in all of this.
He watched with a little nervousness as he stood in a white button down and some black pants. He was demanded asked to change from his comfortable warm pajamas, into this more serious ‘photo worthy’ outfit.
“Okay now, I need you to sit in the chair and I’ll be right back.” Y/n commanded, her voice left no place to argue.
So Spencer sat down. Patting his legs while he waited for the final piece of this photoshoot.
About 2 minutes had gone by before Y/n walked out, red lipstick painted on her lips. As well as a tub in her hand. If he looked close enough, he could see kiss marks on her hands, some more faint and one very vibrant.
Spencer studied the way Y/n walked up to him. Almost like she was trying to seduce in a way. As she got closer, Spence could see a smirk playing on her lips.
“What are you-” Before the genius could actually ask his question, Y/n had kissed him.
His brain short circuited. His IQ is now at 60.
It took a second before he kissed back, before it could get more heated Y/n pulled back. She studied the lipstick print on her boyfriend, liking how well it was placed.
Spencer’s face had flushed, he stared at her surprised, trying to understand what’s happening.
Before he could ask Y/n started talking, “The assignment is to do something new. To try and incorporate all of the lessons we’ve learned up into now. As you’ve said all of my past works were either scenery or candid photos. Something that has just happened or there for anyone to see. What I’m doing here is different. This is a photoshoot, not candid. You are normally sophisticated and well cleaned, however at this moment your unshaven and floppy hair. As well as dressed in something more date-casual.”
Spencer tried computing everything that was said, only to realize what she meant. His flush grew a little as Y/n looked at him for a silent ask, him nodding his answer.
She started to unbutton the top four buttons of his shirt. Spence started to grow even redder as Y/n started to kiss all over his neck, face and chest.
He felt like he couldn’t breathe, all this attention and kisses making him hot.
But one thing is that he couldn’t stop smiling. Neither of them could. Y/n’s kisses varied in shape and size, trying hard to control the smiles on her face. Spencer giggled and flushed until she stopped.
Y/n looked at the lipstick marks with a proud smile and a flush of her own. Giddy to take the pictures.
“Okay hold still.” Y/n commanded, trying to capture him flush and giddy.
Trying to catch her Spencer, the goof ball that’s in love with her, in a living memory.
Little, is home
You were done, with everything. You'd had enough. As you stomp through the front door, you're greeted by a sight that brings tears to your eyes. Spencer, in the 10 minutes he had before you got home, set op your playmat in front of the TV, there's your mobile mat, colouring sheets and crayons. Spencer's smiling at you from the couch.
"There's my princess, come on now. Come to Daddy"
You practically jump onto his lap, making him chuckle. "Now now, what you say, we get you into a diaper and a onesie huh?"
"Yeaaaa, please Daddy?" Your voice grows soft, quite, small. Spencer looks lovingly at your state before picking you op around his hip the way you would a toddler. Your Daddy chances your clothes and sets you down on your playmat. You can't help the grin growing on your face, you really needed this, and Daddy knew it.
You color a million different pictures, watch a million cartoons, but as the night comes to an end, Spencer puts you down in your new crib with a stuffie to snuggle with.
Night night.
It's sooooo late, and you're waiting op for Spencer, you know you shouldn't, but you can't go to bed with cuddles from your daddy. That's just impossible, so impossible!
You're rubbing your eyes, starting to grow fussy from staying op way past your bedtime, you know Spencer isn't going to happy with that, but you're hoping for a little leniency tonight. You're in your coziest little clothes, pacifier still in your mouth.
You hear a door open and you get op, shuffling op to meet your Daddy halfway. Spencer's taking his shoes off when he looks over to the sound of shuffling. He smiles as you open your arms wide to be picked op.
"Hello there sweet one" Spencer hoists you op on his hips. You settle into it quickly, wrapping your arms around his neck. He gently pats your bottom, rubbing you back in his other hand. Now happy in your Daddy's arm, your grumpiness is replaced with pure tiredness. "Oh you've been op late huh?" Spencer chuckles, patting your bottom firmly. You babble incoherently as Spencer puts you down on your bed while he changes.
You babble sleepily, the light in your bedroom is orange and is making you even more tired as you lay on you back. Spencer leans down, kissing your forehead. "it's night night time now little one" That makes you whines. You wanted cuddles, not night night. Spencer hushes your protests by peppering kisses over your face. Of course it works, it always does.
As Spencer settles in, you tuck yourself tight against his chest. He chuckles, and takes you in his embrace, you're too sleepy to care. So you snuggle close. Finally having gotten your cuddles, you can sleep. And, you sleep like the baby you are, snuggled op close to Daddy, deep asleep.
hii! i really loved your magic bag story!! i was wondering if you could write more caregiver!Spencer with little! reader? if not no worries!! 💗
I most certainly can my friend. I've actually been looking to write some more of that. And you sparked a little idea in me.
"Baby I'm home!"
You had been home all all day, in short. You're regressed, you're needy, and you are getting close to a meltdown. You tug on the sweater you borrowed from Spencer, wishing he was home already. You throw yourself down on your play mat, the nice, comfy play mat Spencer had put op for you in the living room.
Your ear perk op as the sound of a door being unlocked filles the space. You look at the hoping, pleading for it to be Spencer and not Auntie Penny sendt to look after you because he's not going to be home for a while.
"Baby I'm home!" Spencer calls, you smile and jump op, rushing at him. "Ouf..." He takes you takes you into his arms, hoisting you op around his hip. "Do i have a clingly little princess tonight?" He asks, kissing your forehead. You nod, wrapping your arms around his neck, and legs around his waist. "Oh i do?" Spencer asks, bringing you to the living room, setting you down on the couch. You nod wildly, unhappy to be set down as you grab for Spencer. "I know, i know princess" He sqeuzzes your hands before going to the kitchen.
You whine, stomping your feet on the floor. "Daddy!" You yell for him, he's home and he's just leaving you alone? That's not fair! You deserve his attention, don't you? Spencer gives you a small smile. "I'll be there in a second Baby, promise, just a second" He reasures you as he grabs something from his jacket. You look at him, now curious of just what your Daddy is getting you.
"Close your eyes, Daddy has a surprise for you"
And so you do, waiting (And bouncing) as Spencer makes his way back to the couch where you are. Something falls into your hands and Spencer caress your cheek. "Open your eyes baby"
As smile and jump to hug your Daddy. "Thank you Daddy! Thank you!" You giggle, letting go to open the op the new pacifier. Spencer chuckles, watching you with a smile. "You're welcome baby, I know I've been busy the last few days, i hope you like it" Spencer says, siting down on the couch, waiting for you to join him. You do, fumbling with the box.
You smile down at the pretty purple pacifier. You smile and kiss Spencer's cheek. "Thank you Daddy, i love it" You say, pulling it from the packaging. You look to Spencer, hoping for his approval. Spencer chuckles, pulling you into his lap. "Go on, try it for Daddy"
You pop it into your mouth, smiling brightly as start to suck on it. Spencer smiles, stoking your hair. "Such a good little girl" Spencer praises you, gently tucking some hair behind your ear. You blush, still not use to Spencer praising you.
"Ready for some cartoons Baby?"
You nod, happily sucking away at your paci. Spencer sets your play mat in front of the TV and sets you down on it with some colouring pages and crayons. Spencer sets behind you, wrapping his arms around your waist and resting his head on your shoulder as you colour him a picture.
That picture later ends op on the fridge.
Bedtime struggles
Spencer borrows into your arms holding op the book he wants you to read now. You gently push it back in his arms, watching as he sucks on his pacifier, a pout growing on his sleepy face. "Baby, Mama's read you three books already. It's bedtime now" You coax, gently brushing some curls behind his ear.
Spencer begins to grow fussy, kicking his feet around under the covers and trying again to get you to read the book. It's a disney book, maybe one actual page of writing in the whole thing.
You take it, giving Spencer a firm look. "Last one, you understand? Then right to bed"
Spencer nods, a smile growing behind his pacifier as he snuggles op to you. You begin to read, slowly, hoping he'll pass out soon. You finish the book all too soon for little Spencer's liking. He blinks op at you, unhappy.
Spencer pouts so badly his mouth is almost a fully on V. "What now sweet boy? Mama read you a fourth story just like you asked..Are you uncomfy Baby?" You coo, gently stoking his hair as Spencer's mouth becomes more flat.
Spencer mumbles something you can't understand. You gently coax the pacifier from his mouth, keeping it in your hand so he can still see it, his comfort item isn't being taken away. "My jammes..Icky" he says, squirming around a bit.
"Oh....How are they icky Baby?" You ask, gently stoking his hair. You'd brought him new footy pyjamas with a space print, you'd made sure it was a soft fabric so it was comfortable but some things just get on Spencer's nerves.
"T-The foot stitches Mama, it Itches"
"Oh Baby why didn't you say so?" You get op, grabbing Spencer's older, comfortable and worn out, long pyjamas not not footie ones. You help Spencer out from the covers, undressing him and then redressing him in the known pyjamas. You kiss his forehead and he giggles. "Is that better Baby?" You coo, waiting for a response before tucking him back into bed.
He nods, eyes fluttering, struggling to stay awake. "There's my Baby" You coo, picking him op and tucking him back into bed. Spencer's gently sucking on his pacifier as you tuck him in tightly. "There we go, no more fussing now okay?"
Spencer pouts a bit but does nod again. You slip in beside him, letting the smaller boy snuggle op to you again. You were tired, so tired. Spencer lays op on you, snuggling his head into the crook of your neck.
You reach a hand down, gently giving him his much beloved bum pats. He giggles, wiggling his lower half after so slightly. You continue to pat his bottom, waiting for him to fall asleep before you stop and let yourself fall asleep.
Pain
You were done, everything was hurting and you just wanted to go the fuck home. The first thing you did, was tell Hotch, who immediately send you and Spencer home, as you are in no condition to drive. Spencer had packed your things for you, telling you to just relax the best you can. He bent down, helping you put on compression socks, it didn't always help, but you're hoping it'll work today.
"Are you sure you don't have any painkillers with you?"
"Yes Spencer for the millionth time i use the last one!" You yell, you didn't mean to, but you're just so irritated. Spencer gives you the look, and your shoulder shrugs sag. "I'm sorry, I just....No, I don't have any more pain meds left and it's getting really bed" You explain as Spencer helps you into a soft par of slippers.
"I'll stop by the pharmacy on our way back and you can see if you can get some sleep?"
You smile, he's too sweet to you sometimes. "Thank you" You brush a hand over his hair.
Spencer help you to the car with a blanket and a pillow, it's about 9pm and while you are tired, the pain is making you restless. When you finally get more painkillers, it makes the pain dull, but not go away, now your whole body just aching instead. So Spencer does what Spencer does best.
He makes you comfortable.
He feeds you all the food and drinks you can think of, makes all the stops you need to get out and stretch, and when you finally fall asleep, he drives carefully.
Spencer doesn't wake you op when you arrive home. You blink your eyes open as Spencer tucks you into bed. Your body still aches but the drowsiness outweighs it and you fall asleep again. Spencer tucks himself in behind you, careful to not make your pain worse by cuddling you.
You guide his arms to places it doesn't hurt too badly and the two of you fall asleep.
Pie
You had tried just asking him, no dice. Make him his favourite meal and lots of it, hoping he's eat him to a state of sleepiness, but he was still op until 4 am, now just with more energy. Then you tired talking to him about medicine, that was a hell no. Which lead you to, more natural remedies, it took you days to find the right things. But, you got it.
So here you are, mixing blueberries, cut op raspberries, cut op strawberries, and Goji berries in a bowl. You're making pie for dresset tonight and Spencer better like it, or at least take pity on you and eat it. You pour the berry mix into waiting pie dish. Then you pour sugar over it before laying the lace dough on top.
When you set the pie on the table in front if him, Spencer's mouth waters. You knocked it out of the park tonight. You smile as he has another piece, hopping, praying it will at least help. Spencer glances op to you, a bit of berry juice around his mouth. "Is there something on my face?" He asks, putting his fork down. You reach over with a napkin "Yes" You wipe the juice off his mouth. "But please, keep eating"
The two of you are settled on the couch, it's not been a long day so when Spencer leans in close to you, it surprises you, it does seem out of place for him to cuddle op to so early in the evening. You gently wrap an arm around his waist. "You alright baby?" You ask, toying with his long hair. His eyes are almost closed. "I'm very tired for some reason"
"Mhm" You hum, moving to lay under him so he could lay fully on you, the way he slept best. "I may have had a part to play in that" Spencer's eyes flutter open to look at you. "Excuse me?" He asks, his favourite way of asking to expand on your sentences.
"The pie, I promise there was no medicine in it but the berries in it, help with sleep. Blueberries, raspberries and strawberries have antioxidants, raspberries and Goji berries also have melatonin" You gently brush some hair behind his ear. Spencer smiles, struggling to keep his eyes open.
"You, baked a pie for me, so I'd get some rest?"
"Yes, i did, and it seems to have worked"
Spencer smiles and lays his head down on your shoulder. "Thank you darling...I suspose I needed the help"
"You're welcome Baby, now rest, I'll be here when you wake op"
Spencer's magic bag
Oh, Spencer's magic messenger bag. He has almost anything in that bag. Why don't we look at some times that bag has saved you and made everything better.
1.
Your case had gone late into the night and early morning, you were bagging on getting some sleep on the plane back, but the jet's blinds are broken. Leaving the sunshine state in the early morning, does not grant you the grace you were hoping for. You drop yourself down in the darker part of the plane, but the sun is still a big pain in the ass. Somehow Spencer is fine, he's not tired, hungry or anything and it makes you so mad. It shouldn't but you're fucking cranky, and sadly you know it. You hold an arm over your eyes as the sucky sun shines through the plane. You're really wishing you haven't forgotten your sunglasses in your suitcase. You give a slight groan and hear Spencer chuckle. You drop your arm and slump back in your seat, making room for Spencer to sit beside you. You lean your head into the crook of his neck. Spencer sets his messenger bag by his legs and throws an am around your shoulder. "What's wrong?" he questions, letting your head rest for the first time in hours.
"Nothing..." You sigh, knowing even if you decide to tell him there's not much he can do to help. Spencer needs his sunglasses, and if he does have painkillers it's probably the kind you need to have with food. "Something is clearly wrong, I'd like to help" He squeezes your shoulder and you snuggle op to him, bringing your legs op on his legs. "There's nothing to do Spence, but thank you" You say, hoping you'd be allowed to cuddle op to him even though the team is around. Spencer grumbles something to the affect of Yes but still, love you, I'm here. You nod slightly, still warm from the burning sun. A few minutes pass with you snuggled op to him. Suddenly, Spencer goes to pull you off and you almost whine. You know Spencer isn't big on PDA, but you were hoping that Spencer would grant you the grace the sun was denying you, though you haven't said it you expected him to notice.
"Something's hurting you" He states questioningly, gently tilting your head back onto the seat. You sigh, that didn't take long. "It's just a headache, the sun isn't helping" You half groan, shifting to lay against the one stretch of wall without a window. Spencer gives a sad smile, glad he was right, yet sad he was right because of course he doesn't like to see you hurt. You watch as he grabs his bag and brings it into his lap, that fucking confused you. He keeps books and case files in that thing, what's he looking for. You close your eyes. Tired and hot. Suddenly something is slipped onto your face, your eyes fly open in surprise. Sunglasses. You look to the top of Spencer's head, his own sunglasses set neatly behind his ears. "You just, have an extra pair of sunglasses?" you ask, as he brings you back into a snuggle. "Of course i do" He confesses, pressing a short, sticky kiss to your forehead. You smile, reminding yourself that you need to write a thank you letter to Diana for raising some a smart, sweet, and considerate son. "Thanks Spence" You mutter. Spencer smiles, pulling his own sunglasses down over his eyes, ready to fall asleep next to you. He shuffles close, leaning his head atop yours. You give a small happy hum, and let yourself sleep for the first time in two days.
2.
You've had a bad day. That's what you tell Spencer as you get in the elevator with him, your arms crossed over your chest, heavy bag slung over your shoulder. Your stomach grumbles and you're reminded that you've not had your usual lunch with Spencer because you've had an enormous amount of paperwork and just did not have the time. "Ahh. Thank you Baby" You whine as he slips the bag off your shoulder. Spencer chuckles and hikes the bag op on his own shoulder. You swear that man has no limit to what he can hold on his shoulders. He could carry 20 bags on one shoulder and not even get winded. You lean on his non bag shoulder and he sets an arm around you. You lay a hand on your stomach, hoping to quiet it. Spencer spares your stomach a glance and your face heats op in embarrassment. You definitely want your stomach to shut op now, and you're kinda regretting letting Spencer take your bag.
"Is something wrong?" He asks, rubbing your side lightly. The question seems odd to you. Is something wrong?, not what is wrong? Normally Spencer would already know something is wrong, or he'd wait to see if you give any more clues. Something must seem very wrong to him, if not he wouldn't be asking. "I'm hungry, starving actually" You confess, hoping that he would take pity on you and get you a snack at some local corner store. "Ha" he sighs, petting your side before letting og of you. You whine and sigh at the same time, whining for him to keep being a pillow and sigh because he won't hold you. "Just a minute Princess" He opens his own bag, digging around for something. For a second you hope he's got a snack, before remembering that he doesn't keep food with his books because some are first edition that he can't risk getting dirty.
You sigh again, and resign yourself to hunger until you get home. But hopefully just until you hit the street and find a store. Spencer nudges you. "Here" he says, and you open your eyes to find Spencer handing you a tapper wear box, layered in two plastic bags. "What is it?" You asks, undoing the plastic. "An extra lunch, a ham and cheese sandwich, crackers, half an apple, half a pear, and a box of apple juice. I always have one" He says, taking the plastic bags from you. Your stomach rolls in happiness as you lean op to kiss him. "You are magic!" you swear and open the lunch. You stuff the de-cored apple in your mouth and chew, then the de-cored pear. You sigh happly as the food settles in your stomach. "How does it not go bad?" you ask, starting to pick op the crackers. "I make the extra one and if someone doesn't need it. Then i eat it the next day and make a new extra" Spencer says, setting an arm around you. The elevator door opens and you two step out as you munch on his food. You remind yourself yet again, to write that damn thank you letter to Diana. Maybe it's better if you go see her actually. It's been a while since you two went to see her.
3.
The jet had just taken off when you realised. Well, more remembered. It was suspose to be a fun surprise for Reid later, but you got a not so fun susprise. It would just have been unpleasant timing. Had you been wearing underwear. So that's how you find yourself crying in the bathroom. You're wearing a skirt with no underwear and you just got your period. You don't wanna move off the toilet but you can't stay in the bathroom for ever. It's a 2 hour flight. What are you gonna do? had you packed underwear just in case? oh god you don't remember. You grab your phone off the sink. Which one of the girls might have underwear in your size? Emily? Would she even have an extra pair? Would any of them? You about to text JJ, hoping her mom instincts might mean she'd have an extra pair, when you get a text from Spencer.
I know something is wrong, please tell me what so i can help you
You sigh. God damn you've been in for too long. You grab some paper and dry your tears. You love that man. So, so much. You'd die for that man right now. You switch to your chat tread with your boyfriend.
I'm having some femmine issues, would you mind checking my bag for underwear and a pad?
You find yourself blushing a bit, it's not something you like discussing with Spencer. It's not that he doesn't understand. He's actaully a bit too understanding sometimes. Letting you take out your frustration on him when you don't know what else to do and letting you cry on his shoulder when you've realized what you've said. There's a knock on the door and you gather yourself before answering it. Spencer slips you a small bag you don't recognize. You take it and shut and lock the door. You sit back down and open the bag. You could hug that man to death right now. A few months ago, you'd caught Spencer looking through your underwear drawer. He insistsed that he wasn't looking to take anything, and he didn't. You laughed about, if he wasn't gonna take anything then way was he looking? You have your answer now. The bag has a pair of black boy short and 4 pads. Is it kinda weird that he brought you underwear and somehow has it on him exactly when you need it. Maybe, do you care right now? Fuck no.
You fix yourself, making sure there would be no evidence of your little accident. You stick your head out from the bathroom and motion for Reid. Spencer quietly comes to you. No one bothering to look at you two. You pull him inside the bathroom. He looks both suprised and a little scared. You lock the door behind him. "Do they not fit?" He asks. "No, they fit fine. But my god, i could just-" You grab his face and kiss him feverishly. He doesn't quite give you the response you hoped for, only kissing you gently. He places his hands on your waist, gently pulling away from you. "I'm sorry, we're on the clock" You mumble, petting his cheek. "But thank you so much" you murmur, pressing another quick kiss to his lips before you send him out ahead of you. You gather yourself for a moment before walking back out.
You sit down next to Spencer, throwing your legs over his, snuggling op to him quickly. "Better?" He asks. You nod. "Thank you" You whispser, pressing a quick kiss to his cheek. "Anytime" spencer smiles slightly.
4.
You lay down on the couch on the jet. Feeling so tired and small. You just wanna go home. While the team knows you're a little so you don't have to hide or try to stay big. JJ was the first to notice and give you a blanket to snuggle with. It was a hard case, really hard case, a mother and a son killing the son's father figures before killing killing his actual dad. Spencer's sitting with your head in his lap, petting your hair. You wish you were home with Spencer, home with your daddy and stuffies and little gear. You glance op to Spencer, blinking a bit. He glances down to you. "You okay baby?" Spencer asks, setting his book aside to give you all his attention. You bite your bottom lip, toying with your thumb as well, hoping for permission to suck your thumb.
Spencer tilits his head in confusion. "Baby, what's wrong?" He asks, petting your hair gently. "Daddy..." You mumble, not wanting the others to hear. "Daddy's here" He whispers back to you. You pout, snuggling closer, blinkinng at him uselessly. You shuffle around a bit, bitting harder at your lip, hoping he'd cach your hints too. "Oh, baby don't hurt yourself" Spencer says, petting you cheek. You whine and Spencer grabs his bag and looks through it. You sigh lowly, why's he ignoring you? Suddenly Spencer's slipped a pacifier into your mouth, you huff in surprise. "Better?" He asks. You nod happily, sucking on the pacifier. "Good, need anyting else?" Spencer asks gently, petting you hair and face. You mumble through the pacifier, hoping he'd understand you. "Stuffie? You have stuffie?"
Spencer reaches into his bag again, pulling out a small stuffie, before tucking it close to your chest. "There you go little one" Spencer coo's lowly, continuing to pet your hair. You snuggle close to him, happy to have some comfort. You didn't even know Spencer brought a pacifier with him in his bag, but you're not complaining. You're very happy. "Okay, just get some sleep little one" Spencer coo's, gently petting your back, you relax at his touch, feeling asleep quickly.
You are woken op by the jet landing and Spencer gently rousing you. You hum, still sleepy. "What?" You ask, blinking a few times to really open your eyes. Spencer's helping you to your feet, arm around your waist. You pout when you realize you no longer have your pacifier. Spencer gently coaxes you op and fixes your clothes. You whine lightly, looking around for your pacifier. He slips it back in your mouth and you smile sleeply. "Come on Baby, Emily's taking us home" Spencer says, guiding you down from the plane stairs. "Cold" You mumble, shivering. "I know baby it's okay" He reasures you as the two of you get in the back of Emily's SUV. Spencer gently buckles you in and lays his jacket over you. "Thank you daddy" You mumble without thought. Spencer blushes and you can hear Emily laughing lightly. But only barely, you're too tired to care. You lean close to Spencer, snuggling close.
Relax
It's a hot night, you've been sweating all day long. You decide it best to shower, Spencer isn't going to be home for a while and there for you can hog the bathroom for as long as you want.
You step into the tub / shower comb in your shared apartment. You quick rise the sweat off your body before settling for a nice long bath. You step out, still wet. As the tub fills op behind you, grab the basket of 'everything bath' that Spencer had gotten for you for your birthday. The basket is still pilled high with special hair care for your hair type, body washes, bath salts, bath bombs, and body scrubs.
You almost laughed at him when you saw it. But he coaxed you into it, at first just the physical care products then slowly to the more pretty and relaxing stuff.
You set the basket of stuff by the tub, just where you can reach. You slip into the warm water, your phone on the counter is playing some of your favorite music. You're on your second round of conditioner when the bathroom door opens, you haven't bothered to lock it as you were alone.
"There you are" Spencer sighs in relief as you rise the conditioner from your hair. "Hey, thought you weren't gonna be home until late?" You ask, brushing a hand through your hair. Spencer dips a hand into the blue and purple water besides you. "It's 2:28 am" Spencer presses a kiss to your damp forehead.
"It is?" You ask, watching as Spencer strips off. "Yes, do you mean if i join you?"
"I'd love that"
Spencer slips in behind you. The water in the tub raising further op. "Mhmm" Spencer snuggles into your neck, pressing a few sweet kisses to your skin. "Bad case?" You ask he continues to kiss you. That seems to halt him.
"Two kids, siblings, kidnapped by the same man a hour apart. They were found barely alive in the unsub's basement....I'd rather not discuss it further"
You turn your head, planting a soft kiss on his lips. "Of course" His eyes soften, and his shoulders relax. "Thank you" You share a few kisses before helping Spencer wash the day's stress away.
It's 2:58 by the time you and Spencer settle in bed together. It's dark, so you feel your way to Spencer's embrace. Spencer holds you close, gently tracing circles on your back.
You snuggle your head into the crook of his neck, your whole body feels soft and relaxed. Spencer shifts and gently pushes a leg between your thigh, you smile at this. A bath then cuddles, not a bad night.
Rain
You wake to a soft tapping sound against the windows. You glance to the slightly open bedroom window, you never liked sleeping with the windows open but Spencer has reasured you countless times that having a slightly open window on the 6th floor of a building was a 0,000085 percent of any violent crime.
There's rain pelting the windows, sending a chill through your bedroom. You snuggle in close to Spencer's neck, pressing yourself flush in behind him.
Spencer makes a small purring sound, the cutest sound he makes when he wakes op. You press a small kiss to his neck, shushing him gently, hoping to not derail the rare night of good sleep he is getting.
"Don't shush me" Spencer half groans, shifting against you. "Why are you op?" He asks, fingers grazing you arm. You sigh, you really didn't want to wake him, but Spencer is and will always be a light sleeper. You nuzzle close to his neck.
"Just the rain, sleep"
"The rain?" Spencer questions with a yawn as he reaches down and tugs the covers op to your necks. "Mmm, sound, temp. Just sleep"
Spencer relaxes into your grip, and soon enough he's back asleep. The rain has always been a comforting sound for you. But not at night, at night any rain, soft or harsh wakes you and may keep you awake for hours if you let it.
Spencer shifts, snoring lightly. You remind yourself that you too rarely get a good night's sleep and close your eyes. To help yourself fall asleep, you go back to an old favorite trick. You slowly slip an am away from Spencer.
You feel around your nightstand, feeling the familiar texture of your earplugs. You pop them in and wrap your arm back around Spencer. You cuddle close, burying your head in the crook of his neck and getting a leg back between Spencer's. While that started as something Spencer asked for, it's become something you do out of habit. It's a nice touch for you both.
It takes only a few seconds for you to fall asleep behind Spencer.
4 am.
Spencer is wake at 4am reading, you making him go back to bed.
You find yourself waking op in darkness, you glance to your alarm, t's 4 am.
You softy reach out, finding only cold sheets where Spencer should be. You turn over fully, searching for Spencer. When you find nothing at all, you tramble out of bed, panicking.
You flick on your reading light. Your first thought is to call Hotch, but you need to be sure that Spencer's gone and not just in the bathroom. You pull on the shirt Spencer left on the floor when you went to bed.
You grip your phone tightly as you check through the living room, then the kitchen, then the bathroom, you're about to call the whole team and tell them Spencer is missing when you hear a chair creaking.
You walk to your shared study, seeing light on beneath the door. You gently crack the door and sigh happily as you see Spencer sitting at his desk with at least 7 different books.
"Spence..." You call, rubbing your eyes. Spencer quickly turns around, hair a mess, only in his underwear and glasses and with a bit of blue pen ink on his fingers. "H-Hey..." Spencer croaks. Your shoulders sag.
"It's 4 in the morning, what the hell are you doing Spence?" You ask, walking to Spencer and grabbing both his shoulders.
"JJ called.....needed help with some chemical stuff and I, just got invested" Spencer blushes in the yellow light of the study. You lean your head on his.
"Have you learned what you needed?"
"Yes..." Spencer mutters, pushing his glasses further op on his nose. That makes you smile a bit. "Then call JJ and then you are coming back to bed"
Spencer looks down in shame. "What? Out with it Baby, now" You demand, squeezing his shoulders "I, already have" Spencer mumbles, refusing to look at you.
You grab his chin and force him to look op. "We'll talk about this tomorrow, you are coming back to bed and cuddling me" You drag him op from the chair. Spencer nods and lays his glasses by the books.
"Of course, it's early morning and we should be sleeping" Spencer relents. You press a kiss on Spencer's cheek. "Mm, now come on, Bed" You say before dragging him back to your bedroom.
You toss the shirt you were wearing back on the floor. You settle in bed with him. Spencer opens his arms for you to tuck yourself into, and so you do. Snuggling op close to him.
"When did JJ call?" You ask, laying your head in the crook of his neck. "At 3:43 am"
"Damn it Spence, i, never-" You yawn. "mind, it's fine, but promise me, the next time the team calls at night, you find what they need, then go back to bed. Okay?" You tell him, wrapping an arm around him, feeling the skin of his back.
"I will, promise" Spencer says with a small nod, tracing circles on the skin of your lower back.
"Good"
Good night
Spencer and y/n
You been on the phone with Spencer for a few hours now, and while you love talking to him, it's late and you are getting tired. Very tired. You lay down on your shared bed, phone still pressed to your ear.
"Spence, baby" You say, sleep trying to pull you into it's grasp. You slip under the covers, warming your body.
"Yes?" Spencer sounds so awake you're jealous of his awakeness.
"You know i love you, right?" You ask, yawning as you rub your eyes. Spencer gulps and whispers to you in a nervous tone.
"I've been talking for too long, haven't I?" Spencer asks, suddenly nervous and sad.
"No, no baby i love hearing you talking it just, it's 3 in the morning for me and I'm really tired" You chuckle lightly, hoping you aren't hurting his feelings by cutting him off. You rub your eyes as you wait for a response.
"It's 3 am for you? Why didn't you say so? it's only 1 am here. You should go to bed" Spencer almost sounds like a kid being told their friend is sick, concerned.
"Oh, right, you're like, on the other side of the country. Yeah, you should get some sleep too okay?" You say, plugging your changer into your phone.
"Yes, of course Dear"
"Good night Spence"
Sweater
you look around in your and Spencer's shared closet, runing your hand over every shirt, trying to pick a good shirt for the rainy day. It's chill out and while your appartment is heated, it's still chilly enough to need a long sleved shirt. Since your favioute sweatshirt is in the wash, you're looking for another comfortable shirt. Spencer's been called away for a missing child, so at worst, he'll be home early tomorrow, if it's good he might be home in a few hours.
You've just run your hand down your last swearer, finding the material rough and unforgiving for you today. You run a hand down over the sweater that separate your side and Spencer's side of the closet. The feeling of the soft cotton sends a shiver down your spine, that's it. That's the one you want. Spencer's dark blue, light but warm sweater. You pull the sweater off the hanger and pull it on over your t-shirt. You press your nose to the fabric, breathing in the smell of Spencer's deodorant and cologne.
You settle on te couch with a hot mug of tea. You mind wanders to the case. Spencer muttered off some details to you bofre he left this morning. A 7 year old boy went missing from a church youth program, when his mother came to get him, the program leader said his grandfather had picked him op, but the boy doesn't have a living grandarent. It's case like these that make you not want kids. You'd love to have a family with Spencer, but cases where kids go missing from safe places, they creep you out.
While you don't want the church going, white fence or classic nuclear family, you'd like a kid or two, not more then three though. The idea of a family life with Spencer, it would be tough, with his job, but you'd really love it. Life in a home with some good land and a few kids runing around outside. You sip the hot tea, bringing yourself back to your reality, there's nothing you can do to help the boy. All you can do is be there for Spencer when he comes home, to keep him ready and able to help when another boy goes missing.
You take another sip, relaxing as the liquid warms your throat and stomach, making you feel cozy and safe as you snuggle op under a blanket. You're not sure when Spencer left, it was either late last night or early this morning, it was dark out. That much you are sure of, it was dark out. You hope it's not raining where ever in the country Spencer is at the mommnet. You don't even remember if said where he was going. Does it matter though? isn't a missing kid a missing kid no matter where they are from? You finish off your mug of tea, craving for another. You drag yourself op from the couch, needing some golden goodness. As you're stirring in your milk and sugar, Spencer comes back through your front door seemingly in disstressed. You grab another cup, kowing Spencer's wil either want tea or coffee. "Hi honey" You greet, watching as Spencer drops his bag with no regard for it's safetly on the floor. "Tea?" You ask, lifting his normal coffee cup. "Yes please" He nods, sheding his shoes and jacket. You never wore shoes inside, when you told Spencer this, he insitsted he'd do it too.
"Do you-" "He wasn't alive when we got there, he was dead within the hour he was taken" Spencer sighs, joining you in the kitchen. "I'm so sorry" You mumble, pouring Spencer a cup of tea. Spencer stands behind you, tucking himself close to you as he wraps his arms around you. "It's not your fault, it's the bastered who took him fault"
"i know, but still" You say, stirring a few teaspoons of sugar into the tea. Spencer's always had a sweet tooth, sweet tea and sweet coffee are a must. "Mhmm" Spencer adknowledges your statement, resting his head in the crook of your neck. "I don't wanna think about it anymore, i'm home now" Spencer presses himself closer to you.
"Of course" You say, crading your neck to let him snuggle close to your skin. His breath on your neck makes you shiver, but you let him, knowing the scent of you always calms him. "Thank you" He mutters. You tap his arm and he let's go of you. You give him the hot mug, and he takes it, tugding to the cough with you following behind with your own tea. You sit down nex to Spencer, leaning into him slightly.
"Is that my sweater?" He asks, laying an arm around your shoulders. You find yourself flushing. "It may be" You say, setting your mug down on the small coffee table. "You look, wonderfull in it" Your reponse is muffled by Spencer leaning in and pressing his warm, sweet lips to yours. You lay a hand on his chest in surprise. It takes you a second to kiss back, grabbing his collar with one hand and wrapping your other arm around his neck. He pulls back a second, catching his breath. "Was this on purpose?" He heaves and you stramble to know what he's asking you.
After a momment you admit defeat. "If what is on purpose?" You ask, toying with his collar. His hand grabs at the fabric of your- his sweater. "You're wearing my sweater, you know how i feel about seeing you in my clothes" He mumbles, straddling your lap. You grin. "Remind me" You sneak a hand down to pull his shirt out from his slacks. He seizes your wrist, eyes staring straighet at the sweater you've got on. "Don't push it, just kiss me" Spencer demands
"Mhm, i don't know, you're not being very nice Spence" You tease, undoing his top button. You smile as your tone makes Spencer shiver. "Please kiss me?" He tries, shuffling closer to you, bringing your bodies together. His arms settle down around your waist. "Mhmm, i don't think so baby-" "Please! Please i need to kiss you y/n" He tugs at you harshly and you chuckle. "Oh, needy for me? You need me?" You tease. Spencer gives you his famous puppy eyes and you melt, you can't help it. "That is not fair, Spencer Reid" "You're not fair either" He pouts.
You sigh and drag him down into a firm kiss. His lips are sloppy on yours. You slide a hand around his back, pulling his shirt op from his pants anyway. His protests are muffled in you lips, allowing you to slip your tongue into his mouth. He softens in your lap, relaxing as you kiss him. You slide your hand op his back, feeling the soft skin. He whines at your touch, and pride swells in your chest. You love how he reacts to your touch. "Spence?" you mumble between kisses. "Yes?" He mumbles back, sliping a hand under your sweater to feel your skin for himself.
"It's wasn't on purpose, but the next time it will be" You mutter, firmly grabbing ahold of his shirt collar. "That's not fair" He whines, his mouth so close to yours that you can smell the sweet tea on his breath. "Tell me you don't want it then" You tease, hoisting his hips op closer to yours. "I can't" He gasps as his hips hit yours, grabbing on tightly to your waist. "Then quit complaining" You give your hips a small thrust into his, watching as he tries to not moan. "I'm sorry" He gulps, fingers digging into your skin so harshly you know you'll end op brusicing. "That's better" You praise. "Now tell me what you want"
"I, um"
"Use your words Spencer" You tease, watching as he blushes and tries to stammer out his answer. "I want to fuck you in my sweater" He confesses. You blush, not expecting this explicet answer. "Well" You huff, manuvering around to lay under him. Spencer follows, staying atop you. "You better get started then" You wrap your arms around his neck. "You are gonna kil me one day" He gulps, chuckling slightly. "Mhmm," You reach op and tug him down for your mouths to met again. You hook a leg op around him. "I might, but you'll like it i'm sure" You mutter in between kisses. "I love you" He whispers to you as he begins to kiss down your neck. "I love you too" You whisper back, sliding a hand op into his hair, tanggling your fingers in his soft curls. He undoes your pants, shuffling to get them off you and leave you in your underwear only. You reaching op, undoning his shirt and pulling it off him.
"Baby, if you don't hurry op and fuck me, i'm going to do it myself" You huff as he works to get his pants off. "Keep being a brat and i won't fuck you at all"
"Okay, okay, i'll be good"
"Good, because i'm gonna need you to you to hold on for a while" He says, slipping out from his boxers and tossing them on the floor. "What? Spencer that's not- hey!" You yelp as he lifts your hips and slips your underwear down to your knees. Spencer leans op, close to your face. "You heard me" He grunts. "I'm gonna take my time with you and you are gonna hold on until i give you permisson" Spencer muffles your answer in his lips and you stoamch twists. You know what taking his time means, it means he's gonna rail you six ways to sunday. And you can't wait.
Movie night
You settle on the couch with a bowl of chips and some soda. Spencer sits down beside you, seeming nervous and tense. It's your first movie night together and while you're in a nervous extied state, Spencer seems to be head for an anxious state. You find yourself rocking slightly, a trait you've picked op from Spencer. The movie starts, and you smile widely, bringing your legs op to sit criss cross apple sause, or as Spencer has told you, like a tailor. But it's way more fun to say criss crosss apple sause.
Spencer insisted you picked the movie. You didn't agrue. It's a new movie, like came out a week ago. It's a movie about a young boy gathering and selling seashells while learning about the sea. You glance over to Spencer as the into plays, he's gripping the ege of his couch, knuckles white. You graze a hand over his knee, watching him tense op more. "Spence, are you okay?" You ask, turning your full attention to him. "I'm fine" He promises, brushing your hand off. You pull it back, accepting it as no touch day. You're half way through the movie when you realize, you've been touching and hugging Spencer all day, if he was really that uncomfortable wouldn't he have pushed you off.
You look back to him, he's got a pillow craddled in his lap, he's hugging it, leaning over it. You try to subtlety eye him op, hoping for another clue. But you are not subtlet at all and he catches you. "Is something wrong?" Spencer gulps. "With you, yes what is going on with you?" You state, reaching for the remote and pausing the movie. Spencer shallows, shaking his head. "No, nothing's wrong"
"Spencer, you've got a pillow in your lap and hugging it for dear life something is wrong" "nothing is wrong"
"Then why can't i touch you?" You chuckle, leaning an arm down on your knee, bracing your head on your hand. Spencer gulps again, blushig a bright pink and you ready youself for a long talk of germs. "I'm sorry, i, i just. This feels a lot like a date and i don't like touching on dates becuase i get anxious" his grip on the pillow tightens.
"Baby, we're just watching a movie on your couch, nothing you don't want to happen is going to happen, if you get uncomfortable, i'll leave" You slowly put a hand over his. Spencer smiles silghtly, gently turning his hand over and inter lacing their fingers. "I know that, okay i know that" He sounds like he's trying to reasuring himself then you. "Oh honey, can i give you a hug?" You ask, feeling your eyes grow watery. Spencer nods and you move in to hug your boyfriend. Your arms settle around him, drawing him in close. He wraps his arms around you, slowly, but affectionnately. "There we go, it's okay Spence" You comfort him, laing your head in the crook of his neck. Spencer tugs at you and you crawl into his lap, moving the pillow from between you. "I'm sorry, it's not that i don't want you to touch me it just makes me nervous"
"i know, you'll use to it, i hope" You say, brushing a hand op the back of his neck and into his curls. You pull back, focusing on his lips, would kissing him be too much? "Would you mind if i kissed you?" You ask Spencer, grabbing ahold of his curls lightly. "No, i wouldn't mind" Spencer answers , leaning in to met your lips. You press your lips firmly against his, enjoying his reactions. He shivers under you and you pull back. "How about, we can finish the movie, or we can head to bed ealry if you like?"
"We'd wake op ealier then normal what's- oh, you mean....."
"Yes i mean we could go have sex" "I'd like to finish the movie first, i, actualy really like it" Spencer mutters, cheeks flushing a deeper red. You brust out laughing. "Oh how i love you Doctor Spencer Reid" You seize his face with both hands and kiss him firmly.
Spencer and y/n
There might be mistakes, i'm not great with grammer in any language. English is my second language.
You knew Spencer would be late coming home tonight. If he came home, so you decide to indudge yourself by looking around his apartment. You hadn't told Spencer you were staying over until he came home but figured you didn't need to. He'd be happy to see you, right?
You'd certainty be happy to see him again. When he'd rushed out this morning you were barely awake, it was around 4:30 and he'd kissed you goodbye and along with an apology for ruining your weekend plans of staying in with him.
You'd had half a mind to grab him by his tie and drag him back into bed, but not the strength to do so. So that was you got, your weekend of cuddles and kisses turned into no cuddles, and one kiss. You're not mad but a little disappointed to have his job yet again ruin a planed weekend. While you yourself are in the FBI, you're in a white collar crime unit and therefore you're safe from being called in on your days off.
You try to be understanding, but sometimes it sucks to left alone in the early morning hours. You'd thought about going back to your own apartment, but decided against it. You'd just cleaned op after dinner, and definitely didn't look through his entire kitchen out of pure curesoist. You put on your favorite music before looking through the first of many bookshelves.
You find a book that looks a bit out of place. A book you know isn't Spencer's normal type. It's the romance novel you've been rambling about for almost a week now. Maybe you left your own copy here by actident and Spencer set it away without looking closely. You pull it out and run your hand over the cover. It's not the same addition as yours. It's a newer. Why would Spencer have your favorite book?
If someone else left it here Spencer would have returned it emetlltly.
You yelp as arms settle around you. You hadn't heard Spencer come home over your music.
"I figured you'd find it eventually " He murmurs, pressing a soft kiss to your neck. "Don't scare me like that!" You reach back and half heartily slap his side. He huffs. "Don't snoop around my appartement then" he mumbles, swaying the both you of you from side to side.
You find this behavior odd, sure you like it but it's not normal for Spencer to initiate physical touch. "Hey.. You alright Spence?" you ask, setting the book back on the shelf. You'd discuss it later. You wrap your arms around his. Spencer tucks himself further into you, face burried in your neck. "Tough case?" You question, knowing it had to at least an important case for him to be woken op at 4 in the morning.
"Mhm" He finally hums. You're sure this case was a couple, maybe a boyfriend killed his girlfriend or the other way around, it's the only good reason for Spencer to act like this. "A couple huh?" You ask, maneuvering around to look at the man still clinging to you. He won't met your eyes, only hiding his face in the crook of your neck. "Mhm" you hear him mumble some more but you can't hear him clearly. "What was that Spence? " You ask, gently rubbing his back.
He pulls from just enough to be understandable. "The wife and the mistress killed the cheating husband and left him naked and wrote 'cheater' on his chest with lipstick, then dumpped him in front of a strip club" His breath sends a shiver own your spine. "Damn okay, that's a lot" You say, letting him hide in your embrace. "I'm sorry.....Are you hunrgy?" He shakes his head. "Well, couch cuddles?" You ask, sliding your hand op into his hair, ruffleing it slightly. Spencer nods and you drag the both of you to the couch. Spencer moves to lay under you and you let him, hoping the pressure would help calm him. You settle atop him, carefully avoiding his hipbones knowing laying on them would make you both uncomfortable.
You lay your arms around his neck, shivering as your top slides op and reveal a bit of your lower back. Spencer's arms wrap tightly around you, warm and comforting. You don't bother turning on the TV, only wanting to enjoy Spencer's company. "Spence" You say, shifting slightly. "Yes?" He answers, shifting under you as well. "Why do you have that book anway?"
"You've being talking about it for a while, i wanted to know what it was about"
"So you going to read it?" You asks, laying your head in the crook of his neck, pressing a quick kiss to his skin. "Is that a promblem?" Spencer asks, grazing his hand op under your shirt to feel the warm skin of your back. "No, no i'd love if you'd read it. But be warned" You chuckle "It's not as innocent as it looks"
"I think i'll be alright" Spencer mumbles, sounding tired. You close your eyes, it's not that late, but it's the weekend so sticking to a sleep schedule isn't a high priority at the moment. "Thank you darling" Spencer mumbles. "What for?" "Being here"
"Of course, i love you"
"I love you too"
Little dabble of Spencer Reid and y/n
You were woken op by Spencer coming home late after a case. He’s stripping off for bed. He’s down to his slacks, the room only lit by the reading light on his nightstand. You let out a groan, reminding him of your presence in his bedroom. Spencer turns, his curls clear in the low light. “Hi” He greets, undoing his slacks and stepping out of them. “Hi smart boy” You smile, rolling to face him. “Come here, snuggle op please”
Spencer smiles in the low light. He crawls into bed, settling into your embrace. He turns off the lights, leaving you in darkness. “Mhm, good, it’s so good to have you home again” you mumble into Spencer’s hair. You pull your arms tighter around Spencer’s waist. Spencer’s gently grabs onto your arm. “It’s good to be home” He mumbles back. “Rough case?” You question, feeling the warm skin of his stomach and chest. He pinches your arm as he shivers at the contact. You press yourself close to him, enjoying his warmth.
“Mhm, young boys and their mothers, stangled then put in bed together in their sunday best. I’d like some sleep now” Spencer mumbles, going slack in your arms. You nod. “Of course, talk tomorrow. I love you” You press your face into the skin of his neck, leaving a kiss on his pulse point. He shivers and sighs happliy. “I love you too Darling” He whispers back to you, shifting his lower half flush against yours. “Hold me tighter?” Spencer whispers. You obey, tightening your hold. “Course. Case hit close to home?” You ask, snuggling into his neck. “Mhmm” He nods lightly before shifting his head to lay comfortable on his pillow. “Going down to see your mom in the morning?”
“Yes” Spencer answers.
“I’ll come with” You promise, letting your eyes flutter close again. “Thank you”
Me and Spencer have shared a bed many times before sure it took a while for us to get used to eachother but dating him was truly the best thing that hapened to me
I looked at his sleeping form next to me he was laying on his stomach his bare back exposed to the soft sunlight that peeked trew the window showing off his soft skin
i pushed a few of his curls from out of his face as i admired his features he looked so much softer in his sleep living without the problems of the world it was quiet rare for him to sleep so calmly nightmares often made him stay up so late living off of his sugary coffee
I gently run my fingers trew his hair and down his jawline not wanting to wake him up but wanting to wake him up from his sleep
Sometimes i wonder if there could be a way on the world where i could truly show him the love ive felt for him since i met him feeling the connection that i knew could never be recreated or relived at least not in this lifetime
He never looked more beutifull to me then this moment truly in a peacefull and relaxed state
As i see him slowly opens his eyes to look at me i cant help but smile at how sweet he was deep brown eyes looking at me with nothing but pure love
I could allready feel my cheeks getting hotter greeting him in a softer whispery voice
-good morning handsome
He mumbles something still not fully awake his voice quiet and deep from sleep
-want some coffee hm love?
He nods as i pushed his hair back a bit to kiss his forehead as he tiredly smiles
Not wanting to leave the beutifull sight of him but getting up to make him some coffee and letting him fully wake up
‘so sweet with a mean streak
nearly brought me to my knees.’
The one where he tries flirting
Emily tutted at her as the girl blindly shoved the Lucky Charms in her mouth, her tongue staining a gross blue-green colour from the additives as she read from a battered copy of Anna Karenina. Bugsy had been living with her for just two weeks now, since her impromptu fleeing from the altar, and Emily’s certainly had a good insight into the life of the twenty three year old.
Yes, it was her birthday next week. No, she didn’t act her age anymore than she had at twenty.
“Bug, slow down.” Emily urged, a rogue orange marshmallow dribbling down her chin as she plunged the spoon in before she’d even swallowed the last mouthful, “You get sick when you eat too fast,”
Bugsy waved her off with the utensil, not even ripping her eyes away from the page in front of her, scooping up the marshmallow with the side of her finger and popping it into her mouth.
Emily rolled her eyes, downing a few sips of her coffee and heading for the stairs, knowing her ride would be here any moment and she still had yet to change her shirt from the one she’d spilled toothpaste down not ten minutes earlier.
“Niko needs breakfast when you’re done,” The older of the two shouted down to the breakfast table, a streak of tabby grey running under her feet at the sound of food. Bugsy had insisted she bring her new feline friend into Emily’s apartment, and as much as she’d hated the way she nearly tripped over the chubby bastard almost every day they’d been here, she certainly had a fondness for him.
Bugsy hummed in acknowledgement, though she scraped the edges of her bowl clean by the time the cat in question hopped up onto the counter in search of her leftover milk.
“This is not for you, you have too much already,” She scolded, shovelling the last few sugary pieces of cereal into her mouth right as the door knocked.
She dogeared her page, gulping down a quick sip of Emily’s coffee, cringing when she caught it was much too strong for her liking, and heading for the door, her sister yelling to her again.
“Bug, can you get that- wait- are you wearing pants?”
She certainly wasn’t, having rolled straight out of bed in a pyjama shirt and underwear, and towards the promise of breakfast, nor as she swung the front door to the apartment open before Emily had a chance to rush down the stairs.
Spencer could have laughed when he saw her, all too reminiscent of the first time he’d met her. The boxers that hugged her legs beneath a large top he was entirely convinced was not hers, though her face lit up in excitement to see him.
“Good morning!” He thrust a coffee to-go into her hand, still warm even from where it had been jostled around in his car.
“You’re my saviour,” She grinned, sipping on the sweet beverage with bright eyes, “Cute sweater vest-”
She was quickly manhandled behind the door by two firm hands, Emily’s face enraged as she glared down at her sister where she was now out of sight from the doctor.
“What did I tell you about wearing pants? Huh? You nearly gave Mrs Jensen a heart attack last week,” Emily hissed, as Bugsy shrugged, remembering the look of horror the old woman across the hall had given her when she’d taken the trash out in a hoodie and booty shorts.
“It’s Spencer,” She poked her head around the door, despite Emily’s shoving, like she was taming a wild animal, “You don’t mind, do you?”
He shook his head, an amused and easy smile on his face as he watched the sisters bicker, not entirely unlike the way he and Emily tended to pick at one another.
“Not at all; I agree pants are loathable,” And he wasn’t lying. He tried to go for looser fitting trousers or sweat pants, hating the way the tight fabrics restricted his legs, rubbed his skin, making him want to itch and squirm inside his body.
“Don’t you start,” Emily pointed at him, huffing as she stepped out of the apartment, “You know she gets all worked up and weird on sugar,”
“Hey, I’m the last person to deny someone a coffee,” He replied, and the two turned to head back to his car, not before he threw the younger woman a look over his shoulder and a wave.
“Go save the world, kiddos.” She waved back, sipping her coffee indeed with bare legs that would have a nun blushing, “Curfews at nine, Doctor Reid, I expect both of you home for dinner!” She nudged the door closed with her hip before Niko could run out after Emily, and Spencer chuckled to himself, shaking his head.
“See, told you,” Emily sniggered, rolling her eyes, “Weird,”
Though that wasn’t quite the word he’d have used.
A killer, so far as they had been able to profile from the four bodies, was targeting women he picked up in night clubs in Atlanta. Most of the team, except Derek, had outgrown the clubbing scene, though Spencer didn’t quite think he’d ever been in it to start with. They all went to O’Keeffe’s usually once a month or so for a quick drink, but it was not big on his list.
Rossi, Reid and Derek stared at the puddle of blood on the sidewalk, wincing as Emily leaned over the balcony, the five story drop making her tug her lip in between her teeth.
This woman must have been terrified by something, someone, to see this as a better way out.
“Maybe she fought back,” Hotch speculated behind her, drawing her attention back to the cleaning equipment scattered over the floor, entirely different to the last three crime scenes where they had been arranged neatly into a triangle, “And when Becky fought back, his routine was compromised, cause he knew the police would respond,”
“Or she could have jumped,” Emily responded gravely, shaking her head at the carpet beneath her boots, “Her nervous system is pumping adrenaline, her fight or flight response kicks in?” Both were equally plausible options, but not ones they had time to entirely pick over.
“He’s struck two Fridays in a row, and if his routine’s been interrupted, it might compel him to strike again,” Hotch said, his arms crossed tightly over his chest, his brow furrowed deeper than it usually was.
“It’s Saturday, the clubs will be packed tonight,” Emily replied, her eyes sad, worried.
“Take a look at the classes the Unsub might have taken, we need to generate a suspect pool as soon as possible,” Her boss ordered, and she nodded heading for the door before she stopped, looking at him with a grimace he didn’t quite understand, “What is it?”
“Bugs-my sister used to work as a shot girl in a club.” She said after a moment of thought, “She could smell a rat from a mile away; said most girls who work in bars get this sixth sense about guys with bad intentions, so they know when to cut them off earlier than most,”
Emily looked at him for a moment, and he seemed troubled, hesitant as she was to even tease the idea to him, before he sighed, rubbing a hand over his forehead.
“Call her in.” He said through an outbreath, gritting his teeth the way he did when he was in between a rock and a hard place.
Rock being another girl murdered by tonight with a huge opportunity to catch the guy in the act missed. Hard place being a twenty-three year old risking her skin for his team for a third time. He hated the paperwork she brought him, hated the look on her face the day Spencer and Derek had dragged her out of that chapel bloodied and shaken even more.
“But she wears a vest under her clothes, and she stays with Reid and Morgan,” He reasoned, “And just purely scouting; if the Unsub strikes, she gets out there like any other civilian.”
Emily nodded, her hand routing through her pockets for her phone already, “Couldn’t agree more,” She said, hitting the call button with a sigh. She just hoped this time her baby sister wouldn’t be making any drastic calls like throwing herself in the Unsub’s way. Though, Emily knew Spencer wouldn’t let her take another hit for him ever again. Not after the way he’d seemed so distraught the moment she’d been dragged from that room, his eyes all but glistening with tears when he’d seen her on the bed, bloodied and beaten for his sake.
No, Emily could stake her life on the fact Reid would go down swinging before that ever happened to her again.
-
“When you think about the nature of serial crimes, it’s amazing there aren’t more predators in clubs,” Spencer said, hoping the pretty girls he’d managed to snag into conversation didn’t hear the way his voice stuttered. This was so far out of his depth, the entire club atmosphere suffocating him worse than any tight pants ever could. The music was too loud, the heavy bass making him wince, the air was too close, too warm, the bodies that kept shoving past him made him want to shower for two hours straight and then wash his hands as well. He’d turned down the drink Derek had offered him, knowing the exact amount of bacteria that swarmed the ice behind the bar, on the rims of the glasses, on the taps-
Spencer was more than overwhelmed. And talking to beautiful women was not helping his flushed demeanour whatsoever.
“I mean, excessive amounts of alcohol, countless opportunities for date rape drugs, not to mention suprisingly risky behaviour being pursued,” He counted off, his satchel strapped tightly to his side, “All right, so who wants a flyer?” The three women turned their nose up in awkward smiles, the tallest pushing past him with little more than an outright scoff, the other girl following her like lost dogs, “Nobody? Okay, all right,” He said, his face crestfallen at their reaction, though he wasn’t so unused to it. Girls tended to react that way when he spoke, his entire high school career had been the same. Infact, the only girl other than his co-workers who ever bothered to listen when he spoke was-
“I’ll take one,” A voice came from behind him, the same one he had incidentally been thinking of since they’d left Emily’s apartment, and he could already tell she was smiling before he whipped around to see her slinking through the crowd.
He was ready to retort something clever, but felt his words congeal in his throat. He had thought, that day when he’d stopped the elevator and seen her in a sodden wedding dress, that he had seen her at her most beautiful. Yes, her makeup had been tracking down her face with her tears, her hair sticking to her cheeks, her expression weepy. But she had reminded him of a star, glistening with the rain, the water shimmering off the snow white fabric, it had taken his breath away then, even when she’d thrown her arms over his shoulders, as if he was the only thing that she could grab on to for safety.
But that dress was nothing like the one she wore now.
It was nothing extravagant, and truthfully he’d seen at least ten girls in this club alone that had gone way more lavish than she had bothered to on such short notice. But, Spencer couldn’t help but take her whole image in as she shoved her way in front of him, an easy smile on her face.
“Beats boxers and pyjama shirts, huh?” She twirled cheekily, warming under his gaze that blinked heavily at her. The dress had been an old thing she’d bought for a frat party, when she’d felt particularly sorry for herself and was going out looking for a bonehead jock to take home. It fit her nicely, complimented the areas she wanted it to, hid the others. A good fail safe option for a last minute night out like this. Covered the kevlar vest Hotch and Emily had wrangled her into.
Not her finest moment, being jumped on by her older sister as her boss forced the bullet jacket over her head; the new girl, Jordan, staring in discomfort as she’d cursed both of them out colourfully for ruining her outfit, but the way Spencer seemed to gulp heavily made her smile wider.
“You look…” He swallowed again, his fingers digging into the flyers in his hand. Hot. She looked hot. Hot enough that he felt his face flush with the same feeling, he hoped she couldn’t see the way he blushed beneath the club lights, “Beautiful,” He settled on, because ‘hot’ was an entirely Derek word to use.
“So you keep telling me,” Bugsy preened under his gaze, grinning like she knew something he didn’t. Grabbing one of the flyers from his sweaty palms gently, she took a look at the general sketch, not noticing the way he had yet to tear his eyes off her, “Alright, this the guy?”
“Yeah, we think he has a mark of some sort- like a birthmark or a scar over his left eyebrow,” He informed, corralling her towards where Morgan stood, his own eyes widening at the girl’s attire.
They knew she was coming to help scout the scene, they didn’t realise she’d come so ready. Derek immediately felt stupid for doubting her.
“Woah, did someone call the fire department, because you’re about to set the damn sprinklers off,” He teased, her face lighting up at the man she knew had a way of making her feel a million bucks every time he saw her.
Emily said he had little sisters of his own, and maybe that was how he knew just what to say. He had many years of experience being the best big brother.
“Oh, please, you guys spoil me,” She snickered, though her eyes scanned the crowd for a general scope of the club. Safe to say she did not miss the eight pm till four am shifts she used to pull, nor did she miss the drunk bodies swaying around her, the men who would get handsy, the girls who would get scrappy, “So, how’s it going?”
“Not good, I gave the profile to one woman and she asked if I was the unsub,” Spencer sighed, running a hand through his rogue curls, the humidity of the stuffy bar making them tighten around his ears just that bit more. “How are you doing?”
“Well, I gave out all my flyers,” Derek said smugly, though Spencer’s eyebrows raised, a smile teasing at his lips.
“Oh yeah? How many phone numbers did you get?” Bugsy snorted at his words, looking between the men with a smirk.
“None, I’m working the case here, kids,” Derek tutted, to which Spencer and Bugsy looked at eachother with identical doubt, flicking their gaze back to Morgan. He huffed, “Okay, four were offered, but I didn’t take any of them.”
Spencer’s jaw dropped, face scrunching in confusion how Morgan was so charismatic with women even when he wasn’t trying.
“Alright, I’m gonna go grab more flyers from the van. You,” He clapped a hand on Spencer’s shoulder, “Need to relax, man. Remind me to teach you the basics on picking up girls. And you,” Derek pointed to where Bugsy nodded patiently, “Make sure wonder boy doesn’t get eaten alive. And stay together.”
She nodded again, watching him leave through the crowd; already a woman grabbed on his arm for his attention, where she watched him politely decline with one of those flirty smoulders he’d mastered.
“I don’t get how he does it. I mean, I get he has the whole body of a God thing going for him,” Spencer sighed, as the two of them went back out into the crowd, scanning for a group of girls who looked particularly sober enough to listen, “But, he just has this way, you know. I’ll don’t think I’ll ever have the way,”
“Don’t put yourself down like that,” She chastised, nudging him affectionately with her elbow, “You’re very beautiful yourself, you know? You don’t need some stupid way, you just need to be yourself,”
She said it as if it was nothing, as if it hadn’t just hit him in the chest that she thought he was attractive, though he still remembered that first day they’d met when she assumed he was a stripper.
His heart swelled in his chest.
“You really think so?” He asked unsure, waiting for her to laugh in his face and tell him it had just been a tease, she was good at those. But she was never cruel. Never to him. He didn’t know why he’d expected it.
“Absolutely! I’ve seen like three girls already giving you goo-goo eyes. Believe me, you got the looks,” She simpers, watching his eyes scan the crowd to look for the supposed culprits.
“So, what, it’s my personality they don't like?” He asked, though he knew that was more than likely the case. He’d always been told he buzzed in people’s ears like a fly, like he was simply background noise the greater population wanted to tune out.
He knew that would be it. It didn’t stop the small stab of hurt in his stomach however.
“If someone doesn’t like your personality, that is a them problem, Spencer, not you,” Bugsy was quick to snap, the joking lessening in her eyes as she caught his dejected expression, “Girls like it when you talk about something you enjoy, something you know what you’re talking about. Which should be easy, since you know everything. What do you feel most comfortable talking about?”
“Statistics,” He said with a nod, to which she looked at him fondly.
“Okay, we have statistics as a backup option. Anything else?” She looked at him, the light bouncing off her eyes in a way that had him pause to think.
“Magic?” He offered, and she smiled even wider, if that was even possible.
“Magic! Perfect, girls love feeling magical,” She beamed, nudging him again with her elbow, and the two of them walked over to the bar, “Show me then, Gandalf. What moves would you pull on me if I was a girl?”
He blinked at her, “Are you … not a girl?” He asked, pure bewilderment on his face as he stole a few napkins from the counter.
She snickered, “Okay, if I wasn’t me. If you didn’t know me,”
“If I didn’t know you, I’d be way too nervous to even talk to you. And you definitely wouldn’t want to talk to me,” He said as he fiddled with the paper between his obnoxiously long fingers, folding the sheets into miniature shapes.
She chuckled at him, shaking her head. It had never been like this with them before. Sure, she teased him, like she always had, but he was teasing back. Complimenting her with a seriousness beyond just being nice.
Something was different in him since the day Cyrus dragged her away. And if that hadn’t done it, then seeing her every morning for two weeks had changed the boyish anxiety that had lingered even then.
“Stop stalling and show me these tricks of yours,” She bit playfully, though the grin she gave him was genuine as she saw something mischievous flash in his eyes.
“Patience is virtue, patience is virtue-” He murmured, fiddling with the short, plastic straws they kept at the bar, “Now for this to work, I’m going to need a beautiful assistant. Do you think you could find one for me-”
She smacked his arm, and he snickered. She shook her head, fighting her own laugh overcoming her.
Maybe she was right. Talking about something he loved made him feel entirely at ease, like he controlled every angle their conversation took, and the air between them had taken this odd electric turn he wasn’t expecting like someone had pumped a thousand volts under his skin.
“I’m kidding, I’m kidding,” He replied, holding out one of the straws, about as plain and simple as it would be if it were in a drink, “But I will need some magic words,”
“Ofcourse,” She drawled, her cheeks hurting from how tight she was smiling, “What are they?”
“Magic words are, ‘I’ll be there’” He instructed, fiddling with the cuffs of his sleeves as he watched her frown, and he pointed the straw at her mouth like a microphone, “You got it?”
“Yep,” She responded, even though the confusion read clear as day on her face. He tapped the straw on her nose and cleared his throat.
“3, 2, 1,” He tapped it to her temple, then to each of her shoulders, “Go on a date with me?”
“I’ll be there,” She responded, and in a strobe of light the single instrument became a trio of origami roses, stuffed into the straws as stems.
Her brain caught up to her as he gently placed them in her hand, her eyes gazing at him like he had just presented her with a 24 carat diamond, though in reality it was nothing more than a silly trick with napkins and plastic.
“Spencer,” She said earnestly, and he could have sworn her voice quivered for a split second, before she shook her head at him, punching him on the hip gently, “You are the most humble man I’ve ever met. You do that to any other girl and you’re getting laid, I’m telling you,”
He rubbed his chin bashfully, both of them catching the way the waitress behind the bar watched him with large, blue eyes Bugsy could have bathed in. She was gorgeous, and she stared at Spencer as if she’d been the one given roses.
Attracted. Interested.
“Talk to her,” Bugsy whisper-yelled, nodding over to the barmaid who busied herself with another order, though they both saw the way her flicking glances to the two of them as she scooped ice, “She would have seen if a guy like that frequented somewhere like here, talk to her,”
“What- no-” He protested, but his eyes widening as Bugsy leaned over the bar to flag the woman down with that playful charisma of hers, not missing the way a few heads turned as the dress tightened around her ass as she bent forward.
He felt his chest flash with anger, glaring at the men, hoping it was enough to ward them off. Her hand enclosed around his wrist, drawing his attention back to the bartender who watched him with a sweet face. He had to admit she was attractive.
“This is my very best friend, Spencer,” Bugsy told the woman, who smiled at him, and the Prentiss girl lifted his hand up to wave at her like he was a ragdoll, “Spencer, wanted to show you something, didn’t you, Spence?”
Raising her eyebrows at him, nodding to the flyers in his hand.
“I’m gonna go dance,” She fibbed, knowing she was going to go scout out the crowd to see if any guys fit the profile, nudging him a little harder than before, “Remember what we talked about. I’ll be by the DJ,”
Grinning encouragingly, he watched her swoop into the crowd like it was second nature, not missing the collection of guys who watched her every move; she captured the room when she moved, when she smiled, when she politely excused herself past a group of girls that tried to pull her into their circle with friendly cheers.
He did another one of his tricks for Austin, he’d come to learn was the name of the girl behind the bar, but it hadn’t felt the same, not even when she gave him her number unprompted, even as she flirted, smiled prettily, batted those sea blue eyes at him. It wasn’t the same.
He worried for a moment that the electricity he’d felt was reserved only for Bugsy, but he squashed it down faster than he could confront the idea.
2. The one where he nearly dies
“I don’t know how to do this,” JJ confessed, her bluebell eyes filled with tears as she stared out of her boss’ office and into the bullpen full of officers, scientists and even the damn military tearing through pages and pages of resources for answers.
Anthrax. A weapon of mass destruction they’d already had a small dose of, was on the move through the BAU’s own city. And they each had strict instructions to not alert their loved ones.
“I can’t stop thinking about Henry,” She whimpered through a strong facade as she turned to Hotch, and she saw the same guilt eating him up in those dark eyes of his that rarely let anything slip.
He had Jack. He had Haley, even with the divorce papers signed so long ago. He had people at risk too. And yet she couldn’t stop seeing her precious little boy’s face as he lay back in his pushchair and enjoyed the sights of the park, the same park that had just been targeted with an airborne disease-
“He goes for a walk almost every single day at Potomac Park,” She sniffed, the nausea chewing away at her brain as she recounted the lesions on that poor teenage girls skin, that's going to be Henry, that’s going to be Will, “What type of mother am I if I don’t atleast call and tell them to stay home?”
“JJ, we can’t,” Hotch said, though he felt his own dam start to tear down as he tried not to think of what could possibly happen to his own sweet son.
“I know, but-” Her throat bobbed, “It-it’s not just me- Emily’s worried about Bugsy. She told me she cuts through the park on the way to her lectures- she has one every day this week- Hotch-”
It was true. She had caught Emily in her own turmoil as the woman sped off to grab a drink seconds after chugging down the dose of Cipro they’d all been given that morning. She’d caught her filling a glass of water until the liquid started leaking down the sides and went over her shaking fingers, and even then she’d had to tug her friend out of whatever rabbit hole the words ‘Media Blackout’ had sent her down.
“I understand you both have people you want to protect,” Hotch was the voice of reason, as he always was, and it stung her to see his face so cold since she knew he was drowning his own sorrows behind it, “But if we all called home and used this information to give us an advantage other people don’t have, is that the right thing to do?”
She bit her lip, knowing he was right. She just prayed on everything she had Will would stay home with Henry today, Haley would have a movie night with Jack, and for whatever she had seen in Emily’s eyes earlier, a pure, unadulterated self-loathing, that Bugsy at least took the day off teaching.
JJ prayed, and prayed, and prayed.
She shuffled her notes together as she marked papers at her desk. They let her take the office to herself since she’d been at the University for five months now, gave her free reign of her lectures without having a supervisor like they had the first eight weeks or so. Bugsy enjoyed, surprising as it was to her, the feeling of somewhere that wasn’t the laboratory. Emily and Spencer had forced her to apply for jobs when they caught her binge watching real housewives for the sixth time back to back, of course lacking any bottoms.
Emily didn’t know why she thought twenty-four year old Bugsy would be any different. They had thought at least that Derek holding her hair back on the night of her birthday party as she threw up copious amounts of jello shots on the sidewalk would be an eye opening moment, but it hadn’t deterred her in the slightest. She had just chucked a handful of gum in her mouth, patted the man on the back and asked Emily to hit up the drive thru on their way home.
It wasn’t until she got the job did she feel a little bit more responsible, like what she was doing actually affected the people around her. Teaching first year college students was so very different than she’d expected, she was the authority figure.
She could hear her mother laughing at her now.
She almost smudged the little smiley face she’d drawn beside one of her student’s B+ as the phone rang on her desk, because she had an office phone believe it or not, and she cleared her throat, trying to sound as grown up as possible whilst also trying not to grin how excited she was to use her new landline.
“Miss Prentiss speaking, who’s calling?” She said, almost not recognising herself as she squeezed her gel pen in delight. She had this grown up thing down to a tea.
“Hi, Bug.” Spencer’s voice sounded out of breath, and she heard his converse slapping against a linoleum floor fast, as if he was pacing, “I got a quick hypothetical to run through with you,”
“Y-yeah, sure- Where are you?” She asked, her brows furrowing when he gave a wheezy cough, “Spence?”
“I’m not allowed to tell you, but I’m fine- for now,” He winced as he said the last part, as if it had slipped unintentionally, as if he knew what was coming next. He could practically hear her brain ticking over, “So, when you’re in the lab-”
“What do you mean for now?” She cut him off, standing up from her desk, already collecting her pencils back into their little pink case, “Where’s Emily? Is she okay? Is anyone hurt?”
“Everyone’s fine; as I was saying, hypothetically, when you’re in the lab where would you-” He talked over her right back, his slender fingers flicking through the piles of work, hoping he stumbled on a formula, a sticky note, a damn cheat sheet, anything.
“Don’t avoid my question, Spencer,” She snapped, and she could already feel the worry lines on her forehead.
He sighed, hoping she couldn’t hear the way his chest rattled and he choked down a cough. It would only make her worry more.
“I promise I will tell you what’s going on if you just answer my question,” Spencer rushed, feeling his face growing sweaty, opening the entire cabinet of drawers. “Okay?”
She nodded, biting her nail, as she sat back down. “Okay fine, shoot,”
“Where would you put your valuable items if you didn’t trust your lab partner while the two of you were working together?” He asked, wiping his brow with his sleeve as he held the phone tight to his ear with his shoulder.
She paused for a moment, “Well it’s standard practice that all jewellery comes off before we get scrubbed, so as not to contaminate anything. I usually put my scrunchie through my rings and tied it back into my hair so they wouldn’t get stolen. I knew some guys who put their watches around their ankles. Basically anywhere we could feel it on us,”
He cleared his throat again, and she heard him take a few steps, “How’s grading papers going? Did you get a fax machine yet?”
He was trying to change the subject, trying to take her mind off whatever it was he was doing that required such an urgent and peculiar question.
“It’s going good, I miss you bringing me coffee; it was like I had a maid who helped me with my crosswords,” She said, biting her bottom lip squeezing her thumb in the middle of her fist to slow the nerves. He tried to pretend he wasn’t smiling hearing that. “Now tell me what’s wrong. Did you go running without your inhaler again? I told you to leave a spare at ours so I could rescue you if you ever-”
“Bugsy, you’re a genius!” He cried, ignoring the way it made his throat burn, “Remind me to tell you every single day how smart you are- I have to go,”
“Spence- Spencer-” She tried to cut in, but he had already put the phone down.
So much for not worrying her, she thought, as she got on the phone to Emily within seconds.
-
Bugsy all but burst through the hospital doors, apologising when she nearly knocked a stack of files from a nurse's hands, wishing she had an inhaler herself after she had ran all the way from the car park, including the three flights of stairs.
After calling in sick the rest of the day, and practically volleying her rucksack into the passenger's seat of her car, she had blindly called Emily four more times until the woman answered with a frightened lilt to her voice.
Spencer was headed to the hospital. Spencer was headed there on full blues with lungs full of an even deadlier strain of Anthrax. Last Emily had heard he was getting worse. Bugsy put her foot down on the pedal even harder.
She knew the speeding ticket would come any day, and didn't even want to think about the state of her parking. All she cared about the second the lady at the desk had said what room he was in was seeing he was okay, that he wasn’t growing lesions or choking on his own blood or having half of his brain boiled alive.
Bugsy felt a small spike of panic, if it could even get worse, as she yanked the curtain back to see him asleep, a cannula tucked into his nose, a hospital gown tied over his shoulders.
Diving for his file that was attached to the end of his bed, she looked through his information to check what meds he’d been given. He once told her he was allergic to narcotics, said he had been since birth, and while she trusted one of the team to have passed the information on, she had to see it for herself that he was stable.
No narcotics given. Only paracetamol for his fever that was rapidly coming down. She could breathe again.
She jumped out of her skin when the curtain rail was pulled back a second time, and Derek seemed to startle for a moment too before a tired smile met his handsome face.
“Where have you been, Baby Prentiss?” His breath knocked out of him when she threw herself at him, a sigh of relief coming from her bitten lips.
“Oh, thank god you’re okay,” She murmured, and his chuckle echoed through his chest into her ear, “You all worried me half to death,”
“You’re looking very grown up,” He teased as he patted her on the back. And she was. She had taken to wearing maxi skirts and tights, even throwing on a cute blazer for affect, she was the teacher after all. She shoved him away with a smack to the chest. He laughed, holding up the opened pot of jell-o to her face, “Jell-o?”
She gagged, filled with memories of her birthday.
He shook his head with a smile as she sat down in the seat next to the bed and he spooned the first mouthful of the fruity dessert into his mouth.
“Is everyone else alright?” She asked, wringing her hands together. She fought back the urge to tuck Spencer’s curls behind his ear, knowing he was sleeping peacefully.
“Stop worrying. Team’s fine; we caught the guy and confiscated his supply. Even saved the last few survivors with you telling Reid where to look,” Morgan watched her jaw feather, and she picked under her nails.
“I keep telling you guys, I didn’t do anything. I just… spoke to him. He’s the genius, not me,” She said solemnly, staring into her lap with a frown.
“Not to him. Whole journey back, before the aphasia kicked in, he kept telling paramedics to tell Doctor Kimura it was you who’d figured it out.” Derek said, but it seemed to make her sulk more.
She said nothing, pulling out her book from her bag to continue reading as she waited for him to wake up, and Derek took it as a sign she was in no mood to talk, god forbid even take a compliment, and opened the magazine he’d grabbed from the cafeteria.
Half an hour and another pot of pudding for Morgan later (she gagged again at the sweet strawberry smell of it), the pair of them sat in silence, reading their own materials when a very sleepy, doe eyed man looked up and frowned.
“Are you eating Jell-O?” Spencer asked, barely noticing the girl on the other side of the bed, who shot up out of her seat as he came around.
“Hey doc. You have a visitor,” Morgan said with a small smile, Spencer’s face falling into a frown. He looked to the other side of him, just in time to see a worn copy of Middlemarch being flung to the floor and a hand grabbing his clammy ones tightly.
“Spencer I’m- I’m so mad at you-” She gasped, every soppy feeling of sadness she’d been stewing in leaving her body when she saw his hazel eyes fall to her, “You put the phone down on me and next thing I know you’re in the back of an ambulance nearly flatlining- I’m so-”
She breathed when she saw his eyes soften. He didn’t think she knew it but he saw the way her eyes glistened, her voice trembled underneath her anger. He felt the way she had yet to let go of his hand, how nice and warm it felt in his palm.
“I’m sor-” He hadn’t even finished his apology when she had latched onto him, trying not to hug him too tight but hard enough she could tell herself he was still here. He was okay.
And he could understand. He’d felt the same when they’d found her in that church, when Cyrus had hauled her away after she’d practically offered herself up in exchange for him. He’d known she was braver than she gave herself credit for, but that had stopped his heart right there and then. He had grabbed her in a hug the first chance he’d got even then, even when he barely knew her, when she was Emily’s sister and not Bugsy. Not the woman he’d spent every morning with for weeks bringing her a coffee just the way she enjoyed it, the woman he’d sat with on Emily’s couch with her legs across his lap as they did the puzzles in the morning paper together. She tried to do them, and he would finish them when she got too annoyed by the ones she couldn’t answer.
“I’m sorry,” He said, his arms gently hugging her back and he felt something wet on his shoulder blade before he knew what it was. He felt even worse for worrying her, squeezing her tighter than was even comfortable for him.
“Don’t do that to me again,” She said through tears as she settled in his arms.
He really hoped she couldn’t hear the way his heart pounded.
3. The one at Haley’s funeral
She had no idea what to say. Emily had always been the one who knew how to talk to people. She had this horrible habit of saying the first thing that came to her head, probably because a lot of the time it was the most real, and people liked real.
But now wasn’t the time for what was best for her. Haley Hotchner had been murdered.
She hadn’t spoken to Hotch yet, she’d only met the man a handful of times. But he’d invited her anyway, for the team. For Emily, maybe even Spencer; Emily said he liked when she was around. She couldn’t imagine any other reason she would be there.
Other than, ofcourse, to be Spencer’s crutch. Literally. Since his real one had broken and he was still limping around with one knee weakened by the bullet wound in it.
She’d nearly had a heart attack when he’d called from the hospital, again, though this time he’d waited until he’d gotten the all clear to tell her so she didn’t panic quite as much as last time. She’d cursed him out for being so reckless, and requested another week's sick pay to take care of him until he was able to actually walk. It was only a one year contract with the university anyway, she didn’t care if she missed a few days to make sure he was okay.
“You look very handsome today,” She whispered to him as she hauled him out of the car, minding that he didn't hit his head on the ceiling. He gave her a small smile and tucked her own hair behind her ear seeing it come loose from its braid when she’d leaned down to grab him.
“Just today?” He asked, and she finally smiled back. She’d been stuck in a bubble in the car; her and Emily both had. They had the same thinking face, he’d realised.
“Just especially today,” She answered honestly, and he worked on adjusting his black jacket so she could hold onto him comfortably. She was quieter than usual. Feeble, almost.
“Thankyou, you do too,” He replied, his face scrunching after a moment, “Look pretty I mean,”
He leaned on her arm, looped it around hers as he tried to be the least amount of imposing as possible. That went about as well as you’d expect for a six foot one bag of bones.
She gave up after just a few steps, moving his arm to wrap around her shoulder as she walked with him. To anyone else they would easily pass as a couple, especially as she squeezed him tightly to her when the men laid down Hayley’s coffin, and the service began.
“W.S Gilbert wrote ‘It’s love that makes the world go around’ and if that’s true, then the world spun a little faster with Hayley in it.” Aaron began, his voice strong as his large hands gripped the eulogy like it would give him any comfort. She smiled softly, her eyes glued to the man who stood unmoving for his son, “Haley was my best friend since we were in high school. We certainly had our struggles but if there’s one thing we agreed on unconditionally, it was our love and our commitment to our son, Jack,”
Bugsy smiled sadly when Jack looked to the floor bashfully. Glancing between the photo on top of the coffin, a beautiful blonde woman grinning back at her with brilliantly happy eyes and a soft face, she saw where he got most of his looks from.
“Haley’s love for Jack was joyous, and fierce. That fierceness is why she isn’t here today. A mother’s love is an unrivalled force of nature, and we can all learn much from the way Haley lived her life. Haley’s death causes each of us to stop and take stock of our lives. To measure who we are and who we’ve become.” She felt Spencer’s head knock into hers, felt the sniff run through him, and she searched her pocket for a tissue, “I don’t have all those answers for myself, but I know who Haley was. She was the woman who died protecting the child we brought into this world together; and I will make sure Jack grows up knowing who his mother was. And how she loved and protected him. And how much I loved her.”
If Haley were here today she would tell us not to mourn her death. She would tell us-” Aaron cut himself off with a watery voice, his resolve finally melting as he realised this would be some of his final words to his wife. Bugsy felt her bottom lip quiver in remorse, “She would tell us to love our families unconditionally. And to hold them close because in the end they are all that matter.”
Spencer felt her tug him closer as she hid the lone few tears from the rest of the mourners and wished more than ever he could press a small kiss to her brow.
No, Bugsy was not good with knowing what to say and when. Wasn’t good at cheering people up no matter how much Spencer told her she always made him feel better. Didn’t really know much about how to make someone understand that she cared other than showing them with her whole body.
So by the time it was her turn to offer condolences, she didn’t bother shaking his hand. That meant nothing to her. That was a business deal, that was an agreement, a formal way to pretend you cared. But she did, she felt terrible for Hotch, wanted to fix him and his sweet son until Haley was right back there to thank her.
She didn’t shake his hand like everyone else had. He held his hand out for one, his eyes soft and warm, like he could see she was struggling. She brushed past his hand and just pulled him in for a hug, and he wondered if she was always going to greet him that way.
“I guessed that sorry wouldn’t make anything better so I brought you the biggest bottle of wine the store had,” She murmured into his chest, and she was gobsmacked to hear him chuckle weakly. She felt his hands pat her on the back gently, and he appreciated her candour. “I’ve got some Xanax if you’d really like a treat,”
She was a breath of fresh air. Aaron truthfully had been sick of people saying they were so sorry for his loss, and he felt like shaking them and yelling, screaming that they hadn’t been the one to kill Haley, Foyet had.
He pushed all of it down, focusing on the way she’d tucked herself to him like she had the day she’d become a runaway bride dripping rainwater over his bureau floor.
“She would have really liked you,” Aaron confessed, and they finally parted, and she saw he was smiling like he meant it, not just saying it to make her feel more comfortable being here. “You would have made her laugh,”
He saw the easy expression on her face fade, and she turned to look at her heels, nodding quietly.
“I would have been lucky to have known her,” She said, handing him the gift bag with a very heavy present inside. “I only wish someone would ever love me the way you love her,’
And with that she bid him a smile, and returned to her seat in between Emily and JJ, the pair of them mother henning her all day.
Aaron wished he could have said more to her after that, but before he knew it, someone else was offering him their condolences, and the sadness in her voice was forgotten.
The team sat around the table, nursing their beers, or in Spencer and Bugsy’s case a tea. Spencer didn’t want to affect his healing process with alcohol, not that he’d ever been big on the stuff, and Bug said she struggled driving even without the help of a beer, so they chatted between sips from two very fancy china cups.
Emily and JJ sat to the other side of her talking about how beautiful the flower arrangements were when a small, fawn haired body came wandering over to where Will held a one year old Henry on his knee.
“Would he like to play?” Jack asked shyly, trying to peer up onto the adults table to see if there were any other kids his age that would like to do something with him. His dad had been busy talking to all those people, and auntie Jessica had been trying to make it round to every table to thank people for being here. He didn’t entirely understand what was happening, in all honesty.
“He’s still a little too small yet honey. In a year or so, you guys can be best friends,” JJ said sweetly as he pulled his chin up to the tabletop and spied the younger woman sitting next to uncle Spencer.
He tottered over to her, where she sat unaware she had a shadow until Spencer's face softened as he looked behind her, and she swivelled around in her seat.
“Hello,” Jack said quietly, looking up at where she seemed to buffer, feeling eight pairs of eyes on her as she interacted with the small boy.
She had never been good with children, had never been around them since she was their age, even the kids she taught now were all at least eighteen.
The mantra to absolutely not fuck up the next few moments reverberated around her head.
She gave him a soft smile, holding out a hand for him to shake, “Hi, Jack. I’m Emily’s sister. You can call me Bugsy,”
His tiny nose scrunched as he watched her, shaking her hand the way dad had shown him how.
“Bugsy? That’s a weird name,” He said, and she chuckled, “Like the bunny?”
She shrugged, “I guess like the bunny, yeah,” although she had never thought of that before.
“Would you like to play with me?” Jack asked, and she felt her chest warm unnaturally. He had such a sweet face. It was just like the woman in the picture.
Smiling at him crookedly, she rooted around her bag for the notebook and pens she kept for her to-do lists. Maybe Spencer was rubbing off on her.
“We could do some drawing if you want?” She offered, showing him the pad with kind eyes. That seemed to satiate him as he grabbed her knee and started pulling himself up to sit in her lap, and she paused.
Kids were so funny, she realised, she would never just start grabbing someone she just met and asking to climb on their lap.
She got him comfortable on her knee, not noticing the flashing glances Spencer gave her between his conversation with Kevin, Garcia’s beau, as Jack started drawing a bunny with a human face, that was supposedly meant to be her.
Spencer watched her giggle as he gave the rabbit a pretty dress, like the one she was wearing, and Spencer had to admit it was a pretty dress she’d gone for today. Had he not been so mournful earlier he thinks he would have blushed how tight she’d held him.
She showed him how to play noughts and crosses, and she let him win most of them, laughing when he asked to tear out the page from her notebook to show his dad later.
That is, until the man himself came over to the table of his work colleagues, only to see the group watching their youngest playing with his sweet son.
“Bugsy,” Hotch said, and her head shot up to him, a guilty look passing over her face, worried she’d overstepped, though the fact he hadn’t said her real name said otherwise, “Can I talk to you for a moment outside, please?”
She blinked, straightening in her seat “O-ofcourse!” Shuffling Jack off her lap as fast as she could without hurting him, smoothing out her dress down as she followed him to the small balcony the funeral home had. It was a classy manor, but she guessed Hotch would have only had the best for Haley.
“I’m sorry if I overstepped, Jack asked to sit on my lap- and- I’m not good with kids anyway I just didn’t want to tell him no, especially not today-” He put his hand on her shoulder to shut her up, a small smile spreading on his face. It was fatherly and calming, something her own father had been much too busy to ever bother with.
“Not at all, that’s not why I called you out here,” He reassured, squeezing her gently as he leaned against the railing, taking a deep breath of the midnight air, and he felt his professional mask begin to slip. “I’ve been thinking… about how much help you've been to us over the years. Reid would be dead if it wasn’t for you.” She opened her mouth to protest, and he flashed her a look that said he was serious. “Let me finish,”
She wrung her hands guiltily, “Sorry,”
“You’re very resilient far beyond your years, you’re incredibly charismatic when you need to be, and you’re by far one of the smartest people your age,” He said, watching her face to see how she felt. He knew she didn’t take compliments well, for some other reason they could dig into any other day. But he needed to say it now, needed her to know now for what he was about to ask her.
“Whether that is true or not, why are you telling me this?” She asked politely, without the usual bite that went with it when they tried calling her something she wasn’t.
“I need to take some time off to spend with Jack, try and help him…” He trailed off, unsure as to what he wanted to say. “Help him understand Haley’s not coming home,”
She nodded with a glistening lash line, and grabbed onto his arm gently.
“My team looks to me to be their glue, but I know I can’t keep everyone together and look after my son. Emily said your contract at the University was ending,” He cleared his throat, looking at her again with something vulnerable in his sable black eyes, “So I was wondering if you would reconsider the FBI academy? It’s only twenty weeks, but Rossi and I can put you forward to do the written exams earlier if you’d like, and then Strauss can have you assigned a trainee position at the BAU-”
“Anything,” She nodded, “Anything you need, I’ll do it,” and he hugged her for once. Maybe it was the way she had said it so willingly, no matter her own reservations about joining the academy, no matter her stubbornness and resistance to her sisters pestering, or even the fact they all talked weekly about how much easier their job would be if she was there. Her and Reid’s brains together were a force to be reckoned with.
And he knew, the surprisingly kind girl that clutched at him back, would keep his team together, would be the glue to keep their heads on while he took some time to watch his son.
“Thankyou,” He murmured into her hair, and she forced herself not to get weepy at the grief in his voice. Of all people here, she was the last person who should be allowed to cry. Least of all to him.
He pulled away from her eventually, cursing himself for letting the front slip, but it was as if she had that effect on everyone on the team, like she had this little way of worming her way between that gap in their chests where their hearts once were before they’d seen the things they had, dealt with the people they had.
It was for that reason Aaron knew they would be just fine.
“You know, when I was a kid, mom got letters every day from people with their own agendas against her,” Bugsy said once they’d taken a gulp of cool night air, “They all said the same thing; that they were going to take me for ransom unless she left the country. She didn’t think much of it until a guy started following the car home from school and she decided to get me trained in self defence,”
Hotch frowned, his chest tightening. He knew how it felt to be a parent on edge for his kid’s safety, but to hear it from the other side cut deeper.
“Which was fine, I got a pretty mean shot if I say so myself, but eventually it progressed into hostage training, in case…” She swallowed dryly, clearing her throat and picking her nails, “I wet the bed the first time they grabbed me, the whole idea was that I wouldn’t know it was coming. They let me go pretty fast, I don’t think they’d expected the eleven year old to reach for the kitchen knife,”
Hotch scoffed, shaking his head in horror, though he didn’t doubt her for a second.
“I slept with it next to my bed for a year, so that next time they came for me, they would think twice and let me sleep in,” She said with a thoughtful smile.
“And did it work?” He asked, watching her run her hands along the stone wall beneath his  elbow.
“I dunno, but the one guy left pretty quick when I almost took his eye out,” She giggled, and the sound made him laugh quietly as well, “My point is, you’ve got nothing to worry about with Jack. Kids like us, we get made tougher, resilient. And with parents like you two, I’d say he had a pretty good head start.” Bugs said, smiling to herself flicking a glance up to his face that said just how touched he was. Deciding he was likely waiting for her to turn around before he let himself cry, she took a step back, heading towards the reception. “I mean look at me, I turned out alright!”
She barely heard his small chuckle that faded into a weep before she shut the door behind her, heading back over to the table where the team sat, Jack now with his auntie Jessica, and their eyes fell on her, waiting to hear whatever it was she had to say.
Taking a deep breath, she gave them an awkward smile, “Guess I’m joining the academy afterall,”
And that was all she got out before Garcia dived on her with an excited cuddle.
4. The one with his new hair
He knew he was sweeping his fingers through his hair much more often than usual, his hazel eyes flickering to his reflection in car doors in a way that was almost obsessive. He liked what his barber had done, but that wasn’t the point.
He was hoping she liked it.
Bugsy had passed the academy with flying colours, not that anyone had ever doubted her, and had been part of the team for all of two weeks, though he would argue she was BAU way before that. Hotch had figured out a staggered schedule where he could take care of Jack four days a week and work the rest until Jack settled back in at school.
It had been nearly five months since Haley had died, but it hadn’t gotten any easier for the boy.
Spencer definitely, definitely hadn’t spent the last two weeks practically breathing down her neck whenever they went out into the field, nor had he definitely not found himself fighting off the grin that threatened his composure when he caught her scribbling notes down to herself whilst Penelope presented the cases.
And he most definitely hadn’t gone out to get a new hair cut in the hopes she would find him more attractive.
Definitely not.
And yet, her face was the first one he found himself looking at as he stepped into the office, watching as it trailed up from her notebook, her pink gel pen paused mid sentence as the rest of the team went silent, her face spitting into a grin the minute she saw him.
“What, did you join a boyband?” Hotch asked in a rare moment of teasing, Derek snickering as Emily nudged his arm with her own chuckle.
“Can I be your groupie?” Bugsy asked, which made them laugh harder, though she stared at him with a small twinkle in her eye the way she always did when he squirmed under her compliments.
He hadn’t thought she was being mean, not even when they took a moment to settle down, not even when she smiled wryly at him, her eyes flicking up to his hair twice more before her attention was stolen back by Garcia switching the board.
“Okay, so what are we looking at here? Late twenties, early thirties?” Emily asked after they quietened, adjusting her bangs over her brows.
“All single, though two are in committed relationships,” Rossi added, flicking through his own pack of notes. “All living on their own,”
“Looks like normal suburban houses. Give the Unsub privacy,” Morgan added, his face scrunched in disgust as he looked at the crime scene photos.
“The differences are more striking than the similarities. Different hair colours, different body shapes.” Reid noted, Bugsy’s handwriting scrawling over her notebook as she tried to capture everything they were saying.
“What do we know about his MO?” Hotch asked JJ, the blonde woman shaking her head with a grimace.
“That’s why we were invited in, the abduction sites are pristine,” She said gravely, looking between her team as they seemed to balk at the information.
“No DNA besides the victims, and there’s no sign of forced entry or struggle,” Bugsy noted in the pack Garcia had given her that morning, along with a little pat to the head for good luck. Before now, in those two weeks, they had only dealt with one kidnapping and one group homicide that had turned out to be one very stupid teen spiking drinks at a pool party. This case would be the worst one she’d seen yet.
“And the victims aren’t reported until two or three days after they’re abducted,” Emily tailed off the end of her sister, her eyes serious as the team came to the same conclusion.
He had days to spend as much time with the bodies as he wanted.
“Two or three days? Women like this don’t just disappear without somebody noticing,” Rossi chimed in again, as JJ clicked onto the next screen handing the remote to Garcia.
“Yes, which is why I had Garcia dig into their lives a little,” She said, taking a seat next to Hotch to let penelope lead.
“And I took a look at their online activity, I could easily see what the Unsub was doing,” Penelope said, clicking onto a screen full of the women’s profiles.
Bugsy couldn’t even say she was shocked. Ever since she was in highschool, friendships, or her lack thereof, had been entirely decided on who had the most likes on their status update. Apparently no one found the girl who read Russian Literature for fun cool, nor did they want anything to do with her. Emily didn’t know she’d sat in the school toilets to eat her lunch for three years straight. Turns out kids from every country were bitches.
“Social Media profiles?” Her older sister asked, though the surprise was evident on her face atleast.
“Yeah, facebook, twitter, you name an online life-sharing time suck, these victims were on it,” Penelope said, enlarging the screen for the team to see the specifics, “And if you look at each of their last posts, they say kind of the same thing, ‘Going out of town, Going on a business trip, Going on vacation,’ but when you look at the time and date stamps on each of these, queue the twilight zone music because they were all posted the morning after each of them went missing,”
“The unsub posted them?” Hotch concluded, his natural frown deepening. This Unsub had a way to keep all of his victims hidden for much longer than they’d anticipated. Who knows what he could be doing as they spoke.
“You know, social networks are an easy way for an unsub to target his victims. These women were especially open, they posted everything from what they had for dinner to where they were going on dates,” Spencer said, looking at the print outs Pen had handed to them.
“The unsub ‘Friends’ his victim, and then uses it as a cover once he takes them,” Derek said, as Bugsy’s face scrunched in disagreement.
“What are you thinking, Kiddo?” Rossi asked from her left, as he head shot up to see the team watching her, waiting for her input.
Surprising to everyone, she was somewhat nervous when she’d started at the BAU. The Bugsy Prentiss, the woman who had caught out parts of the Russian Mob when she was just a college student, was nervous to not mess up in front of them.
“I understand what Derek’s saying, but nowadays you don’t actually have to be friends with someone to follow them.” She said, picking her fingertips in thought, “A lot of people have hundreds of total strangers they’ve never met on their page; some settings mean you don’t even need to be ‘friends’ in the first place to see what they're posting. The UnSub probably wouldn’t even bother implicating himself in the first place by following them, he could just access their profile and see what they're up to. I think he profiles as patient and organised, and somewhat tech savvy if he’s up to date on the way these medias work,”
The team watched her carefully, Spencer beating down the proud smile he wanted to flash her, knowing he needed to be focused on this case, but she seemed satisfied with her answer when Penelope nodded in agreement.
“So you don’t think he’s an old guy like me, is what you’re saying?” Derek asked with aghast, knowing full well mid thirties wasn’t too old. Hadn’t stopped his pride hurting.
She shook her head, “I just think he wouldn’t be as old as you. Mine and Reid’s age maybe. But he seems obsessive, and he also must have a job that affords him the spare time to spend the following few days with the bodies, but it means we should also assume that these women are likely already dead,”
She looked to Hotch hopefully, to see him staring at her unreadably for a moment, before he looked to Rossi with a nod.
David slapped her on the shoulder affectionately, “You just put together your first profile, kid,”
And before long, they were heading for the jet with her deductions in mind to hand over to the cops.
“Can someone explain to me the appeal of these sites? ‘Eating sushi tonight, yum!’ ‘Boss is keeping me late at work, grr,’” Rossi stared at the status updates, perplexed, as the team snickered to themselves.
“Now, wait a minute. How did you find my profile?” Bugsy asked jokingly, and she drew a fond smile from Aaron her way when Rossi chuckled to himself.
He wished she would stop looking so nervous to contribute. She fit right in with the furniture.
“Whose life is so important that we’d be interested in this kind of detail?” Rossi asked seriously, though Bugsy supposed even the coffee machine was a new useless piece of technology to the man who liked his espresso fresh.
“That’s just it, no one is. I guess everyone just wanted to believe it to themselves that they all have an audience out there waiting to hear every update of their day. Some of them even have GPS tracking systems in place to make it even easier for people to find out exactly where you are,” Bugsy said, her eyes flicking to Spencer who watched her intently, automatically floating up to take in his new hair again.
She couldn’t help think he had stopped looking cute, and started looking hot. He’d always been cute, god knows she’d always thought he was good looking. But now he looked… dreamy. It had made her double take the minute he’d walked through the door, hoping it wasn’t too obvious she was staring.
“That explains how he’s finding them, but it doesn’t tell us how he’s getting into their houses,” Hotch nodded along with her, eying her carefully as she looked through her own notes she’d made once she’d brought herself round to ripping her eyes off Reid.
“At the very least I believe he has copies of their keys,” Spencer said, his finger trailing the information in his file, “Doris Archer had a home security system installed, but the disable code was entered at 1:56am, so he knew that too. He also found a way to deal with her dog, a German Shepard she adopted from the pound last year, it went missing the night she did,”
“Did they find the dog?” Bugsy asked, her face in a frown as Emily looked up to her.
“Why? What are you thinking?” She asked her little sister who played with the ‘TRAINEE’ lanyard around her neck.
“If he hurt the dog, it likely meant the dog had been on alert to him as an intruder, since opportunistic violence isn’t in his profile of being collected and organised. So if he didn’t hurt the dog, and he was found alive and unharmed, it means the dog knew him,” Bugsy explained, and Derek stroked his face in thought.
“This guy’s gotta be in and out of the house well before the night of the disappearance. He comes up with some ruse, talks his way inside, and then once he’s familiar enough with the house he knows he can come back and kidnap them without disturbing anything,” He said, the girl nodding in agreement with him.
“Think of people you let into your home you don’t consider a threat. Home repair guys, dog walkers?” Rossi offered, but JJ was quick to flick to her own pack.
“Detective Fordham looked into that too. No one came even close to being a killer,” She shut down, not wanting to waste their time running through avenues that had already been explored.
“Alright,” Hotch started as he glanced at his watch to see they were landing in around ten minutes, “Morgan and Prentiss, start with the last abduction site, see if anything points to his MO.”
Bugsy raised her hand politely, as if she were still in class, and he nodded in her direction to speak, “Do you mean as in me when you say Prentiss or as in Emily when you say Prentiss?” She asked, and Emily seemed to be having the same issue as she flicked a glance between the two of them.
“I mean Emily, for you I guess I’ll have to say-” But he stopped himself with a frown. What would he say? Bugsy? No, too informal on a case. Baby Prentiss? Absolutely not. He thinks she might just hit him if he said her first name too much. “We’ll workshop it for now. Dave, you, Prentiss, Reid and JJ go back over the women’s lives. Start with asking around their friends on the sites. If this is how the Unsub is finding them, maybe they’re connected to him without even realising.”
The team was quiet for a moment, before Spencer pointed to Bugsy with his pen, “So that time you meant Bug, right?”
Dave wished he could protest but he had also been a bit confused, as Hotch rubbed his head tenderly.
He felt the headache coming already.
“What was it about these women that made him choose them as targets?” Bugsy asked as she and Spencer sat in a small room in the Boise precinct, the three victims' profile pictures staring back at them from the board.
It was their second day working on the case, and other than Garcia tracking a very disturbing snuff film of the last murder being streamed from the victim’s own IP address using camera’s he’d set up in the home, they had yet to have a big breakthrough. Hotch had told her to leave the room when they’d shown the footage, knowing it was one of her first weeks on the case, and despite having a strong stomach, he wanted her to ease into the role rather than drop her in the deep end head first.
Even seasoned agents like Morgan and Rossi had both winced, JJ even gagging as they watched it happen. They usually dealt with the aftermath, not have front row seats on the act itself.
She had been allowed in once the tape had finished, but Reid had immediately shuffled her into the small office they’d been permitted to use by the Boise police, his face a little more peaky than usual.
She wished he wouldn’t worry so much about her, wished he would hide it better when he fretted over her. She was sure he would burst a vessel if he kept flicking his head to look at her, though she just sat staring at the women as if the answer would jump out at her.
“They’re all pretty, aren’t they?” Bugsy said, swinging her legs beneath the table, her eyes roving over the three faces, “Though unconventionally, they’re still pretty.”
They weren’t his type, Spencer thought, they looked almost nothing like her. She had removed the last of the pink hair dye she’d managed to keep on top of for a year or so before she’d started at the university. Her nose piercing had progressed to a little thin silver hoop, though her earrings had been dialled down for safety reasons in the field, and she kept her hair tied back away from her face most days. She looked older, which was a dumb thing to think, since of course she was older. But she had grown into her face, and Spencer was entirely convinced she took after her father since the only thing she shared with Emily was the same pout when she thought too hard.
He’d watched her grow for all of three years into the twenty five year old that sat before him, and yet her face had never really changed shape. She still had those pretty eyes that seemed to glint up at him, those soft lips that pursed when she tried not to giggle at him, that perfect nose he would trace the edge of using just his gaze when she had come over to his apartment to study for the academy. She was still as beautiful as the day he’d met her, he thinks part of him had always thought of her in that way. He had just put it down to a pretty girl giving him attention. But girls gave him attention all the time, he had realised since that stakeout at the club, when he’d given her those napkin roses. He just didn’t care for them.
He only cared about what she thought of him.
Only cared what her face looked like-
“Wait,” He stopped his thoughts that could go on for days, weeks, about her. They already had, it was difficult to pull himself out of it sometimes. He stared at the photos of the victims, his mind revelling in her own face that he didn’t doubt had guys swooning and falling over their own feet, as he zeroed in on their eyes, cheekbones, septums, “Their faces are all an identical structure,”
“How did you figure that out?” She asked, wide eyed and he ripped down the photos before she could catch him blushing.
He thought he might take it to the grave what he’d been thinking about.
“He’s going live,” Hotch seethed, clicking a button on the remote and the whiteboard in the centre of the room lit up with video footage, a small red dot flashing slowly in the corner telling them they were watching it being streamed.
Bugsy stood behind Spencer, her eyes glued to the small computer at the desk that played the same screen, her heart rate spiking when she saw a small body camera pointing at a house, the UnSub cutting across a lawn in a near sprint.
He’d lost control completely, and he had another victim set in his sights.
“He’s not slow, deliberate. This guy’s pissed.” Rossi said, his jaw hung open in horror as the streamer headed straight for the front door.
“All right, what do we see? Determining markers?” Hotch snapped the groups focus back from the gut wrenching panic that everyone felt, and it was like a switch flipped.
“A one story cottage,” Spencer noted, his eyes glued to the screen so tight he missed the way Bugsy’s face changed colour, and she looked like she was swaying on her feet.
“That could be anywhere,” Detective Fordham commented back, his face grimacing.
“Is there a number on the house?” Morgan asked, and everyone leaned in closer to the footage.
“No, he’s already at the door,” JJ said, running a hand through her long blonde hair.
Bugsy thought she might be sick.
“Garcia,”
“He’s using twice as many proxy servers,” Her shaky voice came through the speaker, furious typing in the background.
“Wait, this window in the background, is that the chat room?” Emily asked, pointing to the small screen at the bottom that flooded with comments from at least forty different users, and more began entering the stream.
Get that bitch.
Show her a good time.
Teach the pigs a lesson for sticking their nose in.
Bugsy wished she hadn’t been so fast at reading, as she felt her skin go cold at the sight of the comments.
“People are getting off on it,” She said quietly, but no one heard her, too focused on finding out where the UnSub was.
“Uh Huh,” Garcia confirmed, as the footage flicked to show a kitchen view, a pretty fair haired woman stood chopping peppers none the wiser to the sick people watching her life before it was about to be ended.
“He’s in the house, guys,” Reid ran clammy hands over his trousers, his stomach churning as the video went on.
“He’s completely changed his MO,” Derek added, and the team could do nothing but watch in terror, “There’s too much light, what happened?”
“Someone asked the wrong question at the press conference,” JJ explained from beside Reid, her nails bitten to hell.
“Oh my god, turn around. Just turn around,” Emily begged, and part of her little sister thought she might have been talking about her.
“Maybe she can fend him off,” Derek said, though even his tone of voice wasn’t convinced.
“New kitchen appliances, maybe we could check the work order?” Spencer was grasping at straws he knew that, but he couldn’t sit back with that big brain of his working overtime and not try to help at all.
“He’ll be gone by then,” Rossi said, and he wasn’t entirely wrong.
“Garcia, can you give me anything?” Hotch asked, and the sound of typing got even faster if that was possible.
“I’m stateside now, I’m almost to Idaho, I just need more time,” but Garcia was cut of by the man in the video lurching at the innocent woman, his hands wrapping around her neck with a venomous grip, her every moment of pain and terror captured on his body cam for his audience to see.
His audience including the team.
Bug felt the bile rise then, felt her eyes burn as she watched the woman’s face freeze in fear, a yelp of “No!” leaving her oesophagus, her small hands coming up to his wrists to try pry him away from her, anything to gasp for another breath of air.
She wasn’t listening as Hotch barked orders at Garcia, her eyes were stuck on the woman that writhed in pain, pleading with the masked man to spare her. But her rebuttals got weaker, her whimpers began to grow quieter, and soon he’d tackled her to the ground in a blood curdling scream, his whole body weight crushing her throat.
Her own hand came up to cover her mouth that dropped open in shock, her eyes burning with tears that she couldn't let fall. It was this woman who was suffering, not her.
There was a bit more struggling from the woman, her eyes bulging from her skull, lips turning blue, until she slumped beneath his hands, and he released her.
She took a step back, bumping into a chair she hadn’t even known was there as her eyes fixed to the screen, and Spencer’s head shot around to see her shaking on the spot, her eyes haunted.
Emily followed suit, but Spencer was already out of his seat, rushing forward to grab her arms and lead her outside.
“I’m gonna get her some air,” He called behind him to the team that watched her go with forlorn glances, and he hated how he felt her trembling beneath his grip, grabbing onto his jacket just as tight.
They made it halfway down the stairs before she bolted for the bathroom, and he heard her retching as he dipped into the room after her, not caring that the sign clearly stated it was for women.
“I’m fine, Em, just give me a minute,” She said, and he heard the sniffles between her words.
“It’s me,” He said, finding the one stall on the end that had it’s door engaged, pulling a cup from out of the dispenser and filling it at the water fountain, “You should drink some water, the cold helps reset your body’s instinct to fight or flight,”
“Or in my case, make a complete fool of myself and take time away from a time sensitive investigation because I’m such a wuss,” She said cynically, coughing chestily and he heard the toilet flush.
His forehead creased as he frowned. The door unlocked and she stepped out, her eyes red and teary as she gently took the water from his hands, and he rooted around his pocket for a stick of gum to give her. She chucked it in her mouth, letting the peppermint clear the vile taste from her mouth, hoping she didn’t look too gross.
“You shouldn’t stand so close to me, toilet bowls are like full of germs and my heads just been in there, I know it makes you feel funny to be around germs-” He pushed her hair behind her ear as if to tell her to stop thinking so loud, and she couldn’t help smile sheepishly at him. “Do you think Hotch will be mad?”
He shook his head instantly.
“Mad? No. Worried? Incredibly.” Spencer replied, stroking her hair a little the way his mom used to when he felt sick.
Bugsy shook her head, sniffing to herself a little more.
She couldn’t stop seeing that woman’s face as the life slipped from her, the hands around her neck. The yelps and pleads and begs and she fought with everything in her.
“How long was it until you started feeling like this?” She asked earnestly, running a sleeve under her nose, “You’re so brave, I always knew you were but, since I started, it’s like I realised nothing really touches any of you anymore.”
He fought the incredulous laugh, him; brave? The man scared of the dark and elevators brave?
“We all take things home with us at the end of the day,” He said, wiping under her eyes for her with his own cardigan cuff, “If you didn’t feel anything for the victims we help, you wouldn’t be human, Bug,”
She nodded, “I know. I just don’t want to let anyone down. Not you guys and especially not the people we’re helping,”
“It’s for that reason I know you’re going to do great,” He said, giving her one of those small Spencer smiles he reserved for when he wanted to see one of hers.
Her forehead thumped onto his chest as he pulled her a little closer, and his cheek fell on top of her hair as he ran gentle hands over the sides of her arms, calming her until her breath started evening out.
“You never said,” She pointed out, “How long it took for you to start getting cold feet. Bet I beat some kind of record, two weeks is absolute dog shit,” She chuckled to herself, not noticing how his face evened out in sadness.
It was Tobias Hankel that had done it. It was getting tied up and injected that had made him feel like a failure, like he wasn’t cut out for anything let alone the force. Like his life was taking a huge spiral downwards.
But he wouldn’t tell her that, not yet at least.
“Come on, let’s get you back,” He brushed off, and she figured it was a sore spot for him. She cursed herself for asking in the first place.
Nodding, she downed the rest of the water and got herself a refill, following him out of the bathroom, looking back up at him for a moment.
“I forgot to say,” Bug said, nudging against his side with her whole body, knocking into him lovingly, “Your new hair is very… dashing. I really like it.”
He swore his face went crimson in a single second.
5. The one with his migraines
“Let me pay for your fuel at least,”
“Spence, just shut up and get in the car,”
That was around about how the past eight months had gone. Every day, she would drive by his apartment, Emily in the passenger seat of her little sisters beat up Renault Zoe, affectionately named after its model, the back seat reserved for Spencer’s lanky legs and satchel bag as she drove the three of them through through roads of Virginia, to work and back again.
Sometimes he surprised her with coffee, sometimes Emily brought them donuts.  Either way, they all enjoyed their morning routine that had stood the test of time about as much as Bugsy had as part of the BAU.
It had gotten easier after that first case; she still had her moments, but her skin had thickened to a point she barely remembered what her life had been like before that day Hotch asked her to join the academy.
Things were going well, she felt settled, even with the new girl Seaver replacing JJ while Jareau was away on business in the pentagon. She couldn’t say she was the girl’s best friend, but they got along. And that was good enough for her. Her team was a well oiled machine.
That was, except for Spencer. Spencer she worried for every day.
She hated the way he twitched in the passenger seat, now his since she’d forced Emily to get the subway to work today, bitching eachother out in the way sisters did until the older woman left in a huff but without asking questions, and she left to take Spencer to the hospital.
The sunglasses did little to stop his eyes hurting, his brain quite literally feeling as though it was pressing against his skull. He even turned down coffee this morning, and her stomach had dropped when she realised just how serious it was.
He didn’t even question her when she held his hand tightly in hers as she walked him into the office, knowing he would hate every second of having this MRI done.
“Everything’s going to be absolutely fine, they’re going to find what it is and we’re going to get you fixed right up to your perky self again,” She said, as they sat together outside the doctor’s office, keeping her voice calm and quiet as not to upset his delicate head even more.
He nodded, appreciating her gentle touches on his hand, and he jumped in his seat when the door opened, his name being called through and he wished she could come with him.
“You got this,” Bugsy smiled at him reassuringly when he looked hesitant, and nodded again, squeezing her hand once before he let go, following the nurse into the MRI room, wondering how he got so lucky to have a best friend like her.
Spencer sighed, leaning back in his seat. The flight had not helped the building pressure in his head in the slightest. He looked up to the ceiling, closing his eyes as the harsh office lights beat against his face mercilessly.
Two bodies found sacrificed to a 'higher being', their tongues and fingers cut off, shells put over their eyes and mouths. They had seen worse, perhaps not as odd, but they had seen worse. And yet this was the case that made him feel like his brain was about to explode right out his ears.
He hadn’t felt like this since he had been on Dilaudid, since he’d be on a come down and his whole body would sweat cold, and his head would rattle with every movement. And even that almost paled in comparison to how bad his head hurt right now.
Spencer had wondered if that was what had done this to him, if it was a long term side effect of its use. He knew it wouldn’t be, but the self punishing part of him couldn’t help but fill his head with it.
He just wanted answers. He just wanted it to stop. He just wanted to crawl into bed with an ice pack over his face and never surface again until this thing had subsided.
Spencer felt hands in his hairline, fingernails weaving and massaging until he almost moaned, the touches releasing some of the metaphorical knots like magic at their fingertips, and he knew who it was, because that was how she always made him feel.
He opened his eyes to see her very upside down as she looked down at him, their eyes inline with one another as she continued running her fingers against his temples gently.
“You okay, handsome?” That was somewhat new, not that he was complaining. Part of him said she just felt bad for him and his weird brain, and maybe that was how it had always been, but ever since he had started getting these migraines she was impossibly even softer with him now. Like she was his comfort blanket he cuddled to when he was feeling particularly sorry for himself, and she knew it too. They were rarely not stuck together like velcro, where he moved, she moved. Where he sat, she was pressed against him like the concept of personal space had never been such a huge deal for him.
And when his pain struck him down into the embodiment of a wounded doe, she was right there fluffing his pillows, grabbing him aspirin, massaging his head like she could grab the bastard migraine right out of his skull and say leave my precious boy alone.
She was too sweet on him recently, but then he never wanted it to stop. It felt like a relationship without the kissing and especially without the sex. The thought of it made him want to moan again.
“This one’s a stubborn one,” It had lingered around for three days straight, and the Miami heat wasn’t helping as he looked up at her inverted face, and he could tell she was smiling gently at him.
She ran her thumbs over his eyebrows, smoothing them out and he sighed in delight as he felt the muscle begin to relax beneath her touch.
“You make things better,” He confessed, her fingers tracing down his pretty nose, and he closed his eyes as she went over the bags beneath them. “You always do,”
He felt her kiss his forehead for good luck, and he knew she hated seeing him in so much pain. He could have whined when she pulled away, letting go of him gently as Rossi stepped into the room, hoping he hadn’t seen the affection before too much teasing could come.
But he said nothing, even if he had seen, just raised his eyebrows and grabbed the file off the desk for his own thorough look through.
He sure as hell missed the way she interlaced their fingers under the desk though.
Spencer twisted the bracelet around his wrist as they sat together outside the doctor's office. Orula’s ide. That was what Julio had called it. Said it would protect him from the bad spirits that clouded his head.
Spencer was a man of science, a man of logic. But even he couldn’t quite explain how Julio had managed to figure out he was having migraines despite him not letting any infliction of pain cross his face, even more confused when Julio had said his body had been a conduit for a higher spirit who wanted to help him.
He was glad to be back in Virginia where everything made sense to him. Where she could hold onto his knee at the doctor's office to stop it from bouncing and his team couldn’t tease or ask him what was wrong or make her stop touching him so much.
“I say we get some ice on your head and put on whichever Doctor Who episode you want, don’t even care if we’ve seen it before,” She offered, smiling over at him and hoping he couldn’t see the worry in her eyes.
He could. He just nudged her shoulder with his forehead to say thankyou without ruining the solace the quiet brought him.
That is until his name was called, just as it was the last time he was here, and he stood to enter the office, not letting go of her hand as this time he’d made sure she could come.
“That doesn’t make any sense,” He said as he sat on the bed, his doctor showing him the clear brain scans that hadn’t flagged a single neuron out of place.
“I’m not sure what you want me to say,” His doctor replied, watching the way his female accomplice frowned, squeezing his hand tightly.
“Isn't there any tests that would look for a specific prognosis we could try?” She asked, and the man shook his head.
“Not unless we’ve ruled out every other option, and in this case I’d like to suggest that Dr. Reid’s condition might be psychosomatic in nature,” The doctor explained, wary of the way the two agents screwed their expressions up, almost identically, hearing his explanation of Spencer’s headaches.
“Psychosomatic…” Spencer echoed softly, in near disbelief.
That couldn’t be it. It had to be the Dilauded. Or a tumour. Or a long standing concussion. Something physical and tangible he could point out and get fixed.
“It just means a mental or emotional cause-” The doctor explained, only to have Spencer cut him off.
“No I know what ‘psychosomatic’ means Doctor, but it's not that,” He said, his voice tired; the idea he was making up his problem in his own head bothered him.
“Well, I think it’s something we should consider.”
“Listen, I’m not crazy,” Spencer insisted, and he felt her tugging his hand closer to hers, her own way of comforting him when she couldn’t grab at his hair or face or jaw.
“Dr Reid, I’m not saying-” But he was stopped by Spencer’s voice that was slowly growing more irate.
“No, listen, I have headaches. I have increased sensitivity to light, because there’s something wrong with me physically. Not mentally. It’s not that,” He corrected the doctor, his sweet face pulled into a grumpy pout, almost offended that the professional was willing to write his pain off as a hallucinations.
“That?” The doctor asked, a frown on his face as Spencer continued.
“Listen, doctor, my mother’s a paranoid schizophrenic who’s been institutionalised. So I know very well what mental illness looks like, maybe even better than you. It’s not that, it’s not.” Spencer said in a huff, standing from the bed and grabbing his satchel, all but pulling her from the room as she sped walked after him, her hand still tightly in his.
She was gobsmacked. She didn’t know how she hadn’t seen it before, and suddenly every single instance of her whining about her mother to him entered her head and she felt a pit growing in her stomach that only had room for guilt.
They sat in the car in silence, her hands at ten and two as she tried not to stare at him.
She couldn’t stand the quiet in which he stewed, murmuring to himself every now and then about how that most certainly wasn’t what was causing his state to decline.
“You never told me that before,” She said after a while, and it was quiet, whether to satiate his headache or because she didn’t know if she was allowed to say it he wasn’t sure.
“It never came up,” He said in a way that left little question. He didn’t want to talk about it.
They sat in the quiet some more, the only sound being the way her engine hummed beneath the bonnet, the music turned low for his pounding head, and he saw the way she chewed her lip and flicked glances at him from the driver's side.
He sighed, not wanting to snap at her the way he had the doctor, “Bug, would you please stop looking at me like that, like you pity me-”
“No, it’s not that it's…” She started carefully, her gaze flicking ot him for a moment as they stopped at a red light, “Every time I forget you’re the strongest person I know, you just seem to remind me,”
And just like that his heart swelled all over again, and he felt like maybe his head wasn't an entire failure to him.
+1 The one with the eulogy.
This was hell on earth.
She sat around the table at the funeral home with her mother to her left, her father and Stephanie to her right.
She could feel the team’s eyes on her; she hadn’t spoken in days, her face shallow and off colour, sick looking. Speaking to her mother and father was difficult for her on a good day, let alone when she was all alone.
Because that was how she looked, as if she were half a person now, her face bitter and angry as she tried to take up the least amount of space at the table as possible, her mother inspecting her finger beds as if they’d scorned her.
“Sit up straight,” She chided, nudging her daughter's knee, but Bugsy made no move to adjust her posture. She just stared blankly at the ugly floral tablecloth, waiting for the other mourners to arrive, to give their sorrows, before they could move to the church.
Emily was right next door. Cold. In a box. Her entire body was likely in rigour mortis now, her face was probably white as snow with the blood pooling away - pallor mortis Reid had called it - her hands were probably twisted and ugly like a raven's foot-
She couldn’t keep doing this to herself. And yet the thoughts wouldn’t stop, not even as Stephanie, step mother from heaven as she was, began to chime in to try lighten the mood.
Her dad hadn’t said a word to her yet, just patted her on the head the way he hadn’t done since she was five.
“It’s a lovely day for a funeral, don’t you think?” She commented, but her voice was too sweet, too soft, too normal to have the charm she’d intended.
Stephanie wasn’t a bad person. Not evil or horrible like Bugsy had always thought a step mother would be. But she was the person her father had left little Bugsy for, and though she knew almost all of her anger had been displaced onto the poor woman when he’d told her he had a new wife, Stephanie had never exactly bothered to remedy their relationship.
Emily and Bugsy had been someone else’s kids. Had been Richard Prentiss’ problems, not hers. And no amount of kindness she bothered to overcompensate with today would change the past twenty years her father had been too preoccupied to even call for her birthdays.
Bugsy scoffed, ignoring the warning look from her father. He knew very well how his youngest felt about his wife.
“Mr and Mrs Prentiss,” Hotch came over, as if sensing the girl’s annoyance at the woman’s words, and she mentally could have planted a kiss right on Aaron’s lips when he made the effort to exclude Stephanie in his condolences, “I’m so sorry for your loss. Losing a child is a devastation I never would wish on anyone,”
“Thank you for your kind words, Mr Hotchner,” The step mother piped up again, before either of them could say anything, and Bugsy shot her a look so full of hatred, Aaron thought she might have slapped her right then and there.
Richard cleared his throat, moving to put an arm around Steph’s chair, one that she’d pulled up to the table herself.
If there was one thing Elizabeth and Bugsy would ever agree on it was that Stephanie was intolerable.
Her mother looked empty as she nodded at Hotch, crossing her legs properly and pursing her lip, not saying anything. She’d never seen her mother cry, and she doubted that would start today. Elizabeth was much too of a proud woman to weep in front of the masses.
“Thanks, Hotch,” Bugsy said the first words she had in days, the only time she’d gotten out of bed was to feel Niko and Sergio or to use the bathroom. Her voice was raspy, ghost like, and it scared the crap out of him.
He couldn’t see her getting through this alive.
With Haley, he’d had Jack to get him through it, keep him going, if not to put on a front for his little boy that was the spitting image of his wife. But Bug had nothing left of her sister, nothing but herself and two parents that couldn’t stand to look at one another without screaming curses.
The other’s had already given their condolences, had already bombarded her with enough letters, flowers, stuffed teddies to fill a house, and she knew she wasn’t being fair ignoring them when they were grieving too. If not just as much as she was.
But she couldn’t do anything, couldn’t be anything except this shell of a woman once called Bugsy. Her sister gave her that name, she didn’t think she deserved it anymore.
Spencer just wished she would cry. He had been sobbing non stop, even where his eyes were puffy and red as Garcia’s as they stood in the funeral home, the smell of incense too strong, the sounds of wails too loud. But she looked… he hated to say it, she looked dead.
“That poor little lamb,” Penelope sniffled, tears already streaking down her cheeks as Derek tucked her under his arm, pulling her close into his smart black suit, “I wished she would let us in,”
“That girl is a carbon copy of Emily, of course she’s going to take herself off to lick her wounds,” Rossi said, his own fancy blazer stuffed with tissues in case his dark eyes welled up with tears again. He’d already managed to save himself once this morning before leaving the house, but he didn’t trust himself anymore than that.
Spencer missed her smile more than anything, though he himself was struggling to muster anything past a grimace.
“The Spring flowers are all in bloom, isn’t that lovely?” Stephanie continued, an easy grin on her face as she looked out of the window to the graveyard, as if she was entirely unaware of the grief lingering in the room, “I think she'll like it here,”
That was it.
That was what pushed Bugsy over the edge, even Elizabeth broke her cold facade to look at the other women in shock, her daughter’s eye twitching as her head snapped to Stephanie, a rage encompassing her entire face.
“What the fuck would you know what she liked or didn’t like, Stephanie? She barely even fucking liked you,”  Bugsy hissed, drawing the attention of a few of the mourners with her vitriol anger.
That wiped the smile off the woman’s face harder than any slap could have.
“You watch your mouth, young lady,” Richard snapped, his face a blazen rage as Stephanie cowered behind him.
Bugsy scoffed, and Hotch knew by the sound of it alone, something had been lit inside her that was about to go off like a hand grenade.
He couldn’t say he blamed her.
“I don’t know why you even bothered showing up, Dad. You’ve not seen either one of us since Emily left college,” She spat back, her eyes wild like a cat ready to claw its way out of a fight, “Surprised you even remember my name now you have your shiny new family and your million honeymoons to keep you busy,”
Richard stood from his chair, his black three piece creasing as he pointed in her face, his hand shaking with rage, and she saw the tears well in his eyes that looked too much like her own for her comfort.
“You are turning out to be just like your mother, pushing away anyone who ever cared about you.” He barked, not caring that a few mourners turned to look at him in shock, “Don’t come crying back to me when you end up alone, little lady,”
And with that he took Stephanie’s hand, who was the patron saint of guilt as of now, a face like a scolded child, too naive for the grown woman she really as. At least she had finally shut up, Bugsy thought darkly as her father stormed out of the home, ignoring the way faces watched hers carefully, knowing every word he’d said had been true.
She thinks for a minute if Emily was here she’d poke fun at the way Steph’s face had been hilarious when her smile had dropped, or that her dad still had the worst temper out of them all, Bug included. She thinks that if Emily were here, she’d tell her he’d said all that stuff out of anger, and that she won’t end up alone, and that she’d always be with her.
She thinks that if Emily were here, she wouldn’t feel the empty nothingness where shame and sadness would be after having that entire thing play out infront of so many onlookers.
But Emily wasn’t there. And she couldn’t even say she was shocked when her mother stood from her seat besides her too.
“Where are you going?” Bugsy snarled, the Ambassador looking somewhat concerned before the expression fell and she went back to an equally lost look of her own.
“I refuse to be made a spectacle of today,” Elizabeth said detachedly, collecting her purse over her black midi dress, her painted nails skimming the handle gently, “I can say my own goodbyes to your sister later, when everyone has left,”
Coward. Coward. Coward. Bugsy wanted to scream after her, wanted to tear her hair out, wanted to grab the two of them by the neck and make them feel the way her words trapped inside her and clawed at her throat, sitting inside like a moth bouncing against a window trying to escape.
But she said nothing. Did nothing, as her mother left the home, left her sitting there alone, until the officiant came over to her not even a moment’s later and told her it was time to start the funeral.
And then she truly felt as if she would never be whole again.
Her hands shook as she got to the podium. She’d always hated public speaking, which Spencer thought was odd since she seemed to grab the attention of every room she walked into like it was second nature. She didn’t even bat an eyelid at chasing down a criminal or being shot at or evening chewing out a detective that wasn’t pulling his weight, but speaking to a handful of decorated officers that watched her with grieving eyes was too much.
Adjusting the mic to a more appropriate height, they watched her eyes scan the room, her brows scrunched, her mouth dry. Trying to find Emily, Hotch realised with a crack in his chest. The way she always did when she was nervous. The way she did when she was looking for Emily to come save her.
“H-hi, um,” Her voice shook, her fingers fiddling with the chord for something to do, “Mom- Ambassador Prentiss got called out on business so I guess I’ll be giving the eulogy,”
No one spoke, not even the ones who knew it was a lie, her eyes falling to where Spencer gave her a sad smile, some sort of encouragement for her to keep going, though his eyes were red and bloodshot, and he was sure the burn in his throat was rising again.
She hadn’t cried yet. Penelope had cried four times today alone.
“I- um, I wasn’t really prepared for a speech, so I’m, um, I’m just going to read the letter I wrote to her if that’s okay?” Her head shot to the priest who had handed the spotlight over to her, the warm spring breeze pulling at his robes as he nodded, his hand gesturing for her to continue.
She cleared her throat, tearing the envelope open, and the paper rattled in her fingertips with her shaking hands as she pulled out the double sided A4 that had been written on in neat blue ink.
Unfolding it, she let her gaze rip off the crowd of people who stared at her, waiting for whatever it was she had to say, the final words her sister’s body would hear before she was put in the ground forever. The last goodbye. The only one that had ever mattered.
“Dear Emily,” Bugsy read, her voice finding footing as she was able to look away from the hundreds of eyes that watched her tearfully. But it was the wrong move. Because the minute she’d prepared herself to say the words out loud she felt her eyes well up.
This was it. The last chance she would ever get to tell Emily how she felt. How sorry she was. How she was so damn sorry for being such a shitty person for so many years, for never saying thank you enough, for never hugging her when she really ought to have, for never appreciating how lucky she was to have a sister like her.
Her throat clogged, and she sucked in a deep breath, releasing a trembling sigh. Her bottom lip quivered.
“Sorry-” She apologised to the watchers, rubbing her mouth nervously, hoping no one could see just how deeply she had broken, just how harsh the wound had gaped open, “Dear Emily,” She started again;
“Everyone thinks they know what a sister is; it's the woman you share fifty percent of your DNA with who you’re put on this earth to annoy the shit out of,” A small wet laugh reverberated around the crowd, and she flashed a small smile at her own words. “But the truth is you can actually share up to sixty-one percent of your genes with one of your siblings. Which is crazy to me, because I know no matter how hard I try, I will never be even one percent of the woman you are,”
She swallowed heavily, and she heard Penny burst out crying again, her head buried in Morgan’s neck.
“If I was as gracious as you, I’d probably say you’re in a better place now, and if I was as brave, we probably wouldn’t even be here, because I would have been able to save you that day instead of just watching like a fly on the wall.” The first tear fell then, her face crumpling in pain. “If I was as considerate as you, I would be able to look every one of your friends in the eyes and tell them it would all be okay in the end. And if I was even the tiniest bit as kind as you, then I would have told you all of this to your face when it actually mattered.”
She sniffed heavily, and Derek did the same, his own throat burning, picking the thread on his nice trousers as Penelope’s tears wet his shirt through.
“Everyone thinks that true love is finding someone you want to marry and have children with, but I know now that’s not the entirety of it. Love is a person you want to spend every day making happy, and make them proud to say they love you too.” Her chin wobbled some more as she read the next few sentences with something darker than remorse in her glassy eyes, “I sometimes think, if we were given a second chance, if we could try again, I would be able to tell you that I truly love you, Emily, and that you’re the only person I ever cared about loving me too,”
Her voice cracked, and she regarded the paper with misty eyes, her cheeks soaked as she quickly wiped them with the back of her white, lace gloves.
“I think maybe next time I wouldn’t be so spoiled and bratty, and you could have been more relaxed and maybe less like my mom at times, but I think if we could do it over, we could have done it right, the way sisters are supposed to,” She sniffed, missing the way Spencer’s face dripped with tears of his own, her words tearing him inside and out with the guilt in every line. “But I guess it’s too late for that now. I only got one chance to be your sister and I failed, no matter how many times you pulled through for me. And that’s a debt I’ll never be able to repay.”
She braved a look at the closed casket, imagining her big sister, the only person she ever truly loved laying in there with fair, snow skin, her noir hair sitting perfectly like a princess in the fairytales she used to read to her before bed. Only this one had no happy ending. This one ended with her heart torn from her chest, bleeding for the rest of her days until her own body was buried and everyone could mourn the girl who was barely half the woman her sister was, no matter what the statistics say.
“I’m sorry, Emily” It was the first time she’d said the two words that had been playing in her head on a loop for weeks, the two words that sang to her like a mantra, every morning, noon and evening. Even in her sleep she had dreams where she could do nothing but scream into a void of darkness, I’m sorry. I’m sorry. It should have been me, I’m sorry. “I hope you can forgive me,” She whimpered through a sob, ignoring the way her cheeks gushed with fat tears now, as she wept freely at the podium, her hands no longer shaking.
“Lots of love, your shitty baby sister, Bugsy.” She finished with a small whine, her expression broken as she folded the letter back up and placed it in the envelope, the cursive lettering of her big sister’s name staring back at her. Finishing where she’d started.
Tucking the letter underneath a tulip wreath atop the coffin, she stepped back down off the podium, ignoring the way the eyes followed her back to her seat, ignoring the way Derek rubbed her shoulder affectionately, or the way JJ handed her a packet of tissues, even though her own face was flooded, and showed no signs of stopping. She felt Spencer grab her hand in his delicately, entwining their fingers together, and squeezing lightly.
The priest continued with a hymn, though she didn’t bother singing it. She just stared at her shoes, as if her entire soul had been sucked from her the minute she’d ended the eulogy.
Which it had, because that had been Emily’s last goodbye.
She didn’t speak in the car on the way back to Spencer’s, not as Hotch pulled her in for a wide hug, rare and warm, even going so far as to stroke the back of her head with more affection than they’d ever seen him give her.
“Call me if you need anything,” He’d murmured into the side of her head as he held her close, feeling two hands hesitantly wrap around his waist, as if she wasn’t entirely switched on which, going by the vacant look on her face she wasn’t.
Spencer made her tea the moment they got in. She didn’t ask for it, she just sat on the sofa and stared at the beat up, old TV he kept only for the occasional documentary, and for the shows she liked to watch too of course. But she hadn’t even switched it on, just stared at the inky black glass like it would jump to life itself and tell her how to feel.
He took a seat next to her, on the other end of the couch, flicking the screen on for something to stop it from being so silent in his home; the silence meant they were alone with their thoughts, and for once he and his thoughts couldn’t stand being together. He didn’t want to interrupt her, or be the first to break the quiet. Not even when he watched her tea go cold in front of her, or as she barely acknowledged the cartoon on the TV, or when he pulled out his copy of The Brothers Karamazov that he’d been re-reading for the third time.
“Would you like me to read to you? Would that be better?” He asked tentatively, and she didn’t even blink, as if she were some sort of zombie or corpse sitting next to him programmed for instruction on acting human.
She said nothing, but she did move, the act of it making him jump slightly, and it was then he realised she had been perfectly still for the past half an hour, barely even showing signs of breath. A puppet with no master.
She leaned over, her body dropping onto the sofa softly as if she was taking a nap, only for her head to rest on his thigh, and his hand flew to pull the claw clip out of her hair like he read her mind. Her knees nestled to her chest, in foetal position, her pretty black dress, the same one she’d worn for Haley’s funeral riding up past her knees.
He gently tucked his long fingers into her roots, stroking her hair like she were a tame cat curled in his lap, clearing his voice as he continued where he’d left off, making sure he wasn’t reading too fast the way he would if it was just him.
His head still whirled around the eulogy she’d read. How watching her crack beneath the weight of her own words had hurt him more than his own grief, had made him bury whatever it was he felt and just need to put her back together again.
Because he didn’t need an eidetic memory to have ingrained what she’d said into his head, not even as they went to bed, and she burrowed into his side in one of his sweatshirts he usually saved for his own bad days.
“Bug,” He braved to say, watching her eyes force themselves open from where they were on the very lip of sleeping, “You’re my very best friend, did you know that?”
She hummed, her nose digging into his arm that he wound under her head, pulling her close enough he could feel her heartbeat against his own where she was in the crook of his neck.
“I love you,” She said, like those three words didn’t rip the air from his lungs.
Not even as her breathing finally evened out, and he felt himself heave a sigh of relief; the bags under her eyes had been more noticeable today than ever. Not even when he dared a kiss to her forehead as she slept, the smell of her shampoo completely taking over his pillow as he allowed his own heart to hurt for just a few moments, missing his friend dearly as he looked after the woman.
Love is a person you want to spend every day making them happy, and make them proud to say they love you too.
summary: second chances don't really matter, people never change. who were you kidding?
You don't know when this started. This, is the increasingly empty apartment. This, is silence and polite greetings. This, is walking on eggshells.
You knew what you were getting into. At least, you thought you did.
You first met Spencer–or the BAU, more like–when they investigated a case in your apartment building. The case didn't matter–what mattered was that Dr. Spencer Reid talked to you about your art and agreed to a coffee date. You convinced him that the age gap didn't matter, you both were only six years apart.
“I'm pretty sure my prefrontal cortex has fully developed,” you said. “What are you so scared of?”
“Aging is the primary risk factor for neurological degenerative diseases!”
“Spencer, you are thirty-six, not seventy.”
“The risk of those neurological degenerative diseases like dementia and Parkinson's increase significantly by the time you are–”
You had cut him off with a kiss.
Then a museum date, then a movie date. Then he kissed you and called you his girlfriend for five months before disappearing from the face of the earth. His team had iced you out, citing some bull about confidential FBI business.
Fine, you thought. You would heal and move on and–he showed up at an auction you participated in, all dressed up in a formal tuxedo with a bouquet of your favorite flowers.
“I'm sorry,” Spencer told you. “You deserve an explanation and a better apology.”
“You look like hell,” was all that you said.
And it took him two weeks to wear you down because who were you kidding? He is Spencer Reid and he owns all your heart.
He'd come to all your showings, he'd sit for hours to let you paint him, he'd feed you when you've been painting for hours, he'd take care of you when you were too ill to get out of bed—you’d sit in a lot of his seminars, you'd hang out with all his friends and host dinner parties, you'd been with him every step of the way to let him heal from his prison trauma, you'd buy second copies of his favorite books so you could paint the edges.
But not today, not for the past month.
You think it's after he'd been kidnapped by the Believers cult, but he had held you close for the entire night when he got back. You think it's after his team faced Everett Lynch for the first time.
Ah, who are you kidding? You are not the profiler, you are just a woman.
I sit and watch you reading with your
Head low
I wake and watch you breathing with your
Eyes closed
It starts with later-than-usual nights and the files stamped CONFIDENTIAL in the living room. A fresh pot of coffee is steaming from the machine, and you arrange the almond chocolate bark you made that morning in a bowl.
“Hey,” you greet because you didn't see him leave this morning. “How are you doing?”
Spencer doesn't look up, eyes focused, trained on the files. “Aside from three murder victims, I'm fine.”
“Is it local?” You ask, curiously.
“I'm here, aren't I?”
You don't point out that he used to consult cases from home during some of the 30-day mandated breaks he was forced to take for every 100 days he spent at the BAU.
“Maybe you can take a break? Have you had dinner? I'll warm up some mac and cheese–”
“I'm good.”
“Are you sure? Maybe you should switch the coffee to green tea, you came in after I fell asleep last night and left before I woke up. You should get some rest—”
You try to take the half-empty coffee mug away from the table, but he snaps into attention, arms automatically grabbing the handle of the mug, and tugging it towards him.
You jump, startled by the force, causing the liquid inside the cup to spill, drops of coffee and cream splattered on the pages from open folders.
“Fuck,” he swears, placing the mug back on the table. “Oh, no, no!”
“I am so sorry!” You exclaim, trying to dry off the spillage with your long sleeves. “Spencer, I didn't mean–”
“Stop, stop,” Spencer moves the papers away, to the side of the table that doesn’t have coffee on it.
“I'll go get kitchen towels–”
“No,” he says, tone firm. You freeze for a second. “No, just–just let me do it and let me do my job.”
I sit and watch you
And notice everything you do or don't do
You're so much older and wiser and I
Then, the distance. He never asks you to come to his team hangouts anymore, and you never keep the door to your studio open. He still texts you when he'd be home, if he'd be late, but he doesn't kiss your lips when he leaves.
You almost call him out. You want to shake him and ask what you did wrong, but you don't because in your head, you are already making excuses.
His job is stressful, his mom is getting worse, his job is important, his mom is important—he’s just tired and exhausted and you really don't want to add to that burden.
(Because that's what you are, isn't it? A burden to be taken care of, a checklist off of a long list of things to deal with, you take too much space, you demand too much time, you're too loud, you're too annoying, art school is a waste of money–shut up, mom!)
Besides, it’s Spencer. He never lied and he knows so much more than you, he’s been through a lot more than you, so what can you do?
I greet you with a battle hero's welcome
I take your indiscretions all in good fun
I sit and listen
You hear about the incident at the pawn shop from Penelope.
“Spencer and JJ were held hostage,” she explains. “They managed to get out safely, but he cut his hand trying to escape.”
You sit by the door after she hangs up, watching, dreading. When he walks in the door, the relief you feel is unimaginable. For a moment, you forget about the chasm between you, forget about the eggshells, and you cling to him and he lets you.
The dress you wear to David Rossi's wedding is purple–his favorite.
“You look beautiful,” he says, like he always does, smiling the smile that made you fell in love with him.
“You look handsome,” you say, planting a kiss on his lips.
It takes one look. One look from JJ when Spencer isn't looking, and one look from Spencer to JJ when she isn't looking when Emily talks about twin flames.
You want to die.
You want to scream and curse and above all, you want to die.
But you don't. You plaster a smile and dance with Luke and Emily. You let Kristy twirl you around as you watch Spencer and JJ talk at the bar. You let yourself down glasses and glasses of Penelope's the Rossi cocktail and champagne.
You sit and listen to his and Penelope’s stories, smiling, nodding, a little tipsy.
I wait by the door like I'm just a kid
Use my best colors for your portrait
Lay the table with the fancy shit
And watch you tolerate it
The final straw is your first solo exhibition.
You want to tell him, this secret that you've been keeping for so long, the one thing that the closed door to your studio has been safeguarding.
The final version of the invitations came that morning, and you know Spencer has a paperwork day so you prepare the dining table. You take out your favorite plates and crystal glasses, a non-alcoholic champagne on the side, similar set up that he put up during your anniversary. You buy flowers and light a candle.
“Hey,” Spencer greets as he walks through the front door. You jump from your seat, holding the embossed invitation behind you. “Do I smell lasagna?”
You nod, biting your lip to contain your excitement.
His eyes move towards the dining table, then frowns. “The candle is a fire hazard, especially with the ribbon, darling.”
Your smile flatters for a fraction, but he's right, as always. You walk over to the table and blow it out, “You're right, sorry, I didn't think about it like that.”
“That's okay,” he says, smiling. “What's the occasion? I know there's nothing significant today, so why are all the fancy stuff out?”
The excitement is back in your chest. You show him the invitation, “Well, I think this is pretty significant.”
His eyes scan the words written in shiny ink, and in two seconds, he grins. “Your first solo exhibition? Next month?”
You nod, smile mirroring his, big and free.
Spencer pulls you into his arms. “I'm so proud of you. I will be there, I promise!”
For a moment, you think that you have him back. For a moment, you think that everything is going to be okay.
If it's all in my head tell me now
Tell me I've got it wrong somehow
I know my love should be celebrated
But you tolerate it
He isn't here.
You wait by the front of the gallery in downtown DC, dressed in a beautiful red dress you had specifically picked for this. You glance at your watch, it has been an hour since the event started and Spencer is nowhere to be seen.
During your speech, your eyes scanned for him, but only found Penelope, Luke, and Lisa instead. You thank them for coming, and you leave them before they can make excuses for Spencer. For the whole event, you stick to your sister, who has been helping you to draw your focus back to the visitors and buyers instead of the front door.
By the time Spencer arrives, out of breath, everyone is already gone.
You sit in front of the centerpiece, one that takes you a month to make and perfect, and you hate that it's of him. The buckets of yellow and green and blue and purple and white, the copious amount of modeling paste to create the texture of his hair and his lips and the flowers that surround him.
A woman offered twenty thousand dollars for the piece but you tell her it's not for sale.
“I'm so, so, sorry,” you hear him say from behind you. “I was with–I lost track of time, we just wrapped up a case and I–”
“Stop,” you tell him. “Just stop.”
You hear his footsteps coming closer. “Darling, please, I’m–look at me, darling, look at me, please.”
You let him put his hand on your shoulder, turning you to face him instead of his portrait. You lift your head to look up at him. He, Spencer Reid, is illuminated by the gallery lights that make it look like he has a halo. His curls, ones that you love so much, are unkempt and frayed. His jacket and the first two buttons of his shirt are unbuttoned.
“I'm sorry I'm late, but there was a missing kid–”
“Luke was here.”
“Luke is still recovering from an injury–”
“But he was here,” you say, finally standing up. You notice the way one of your heels makes a sound when you stomp it, like a child. “This is the most important night of my life, and Luke was here, Lisa was here, and Penelope was here, but you weren't.”
“There was a missing kid!” He insists. “The unsub was a family annihilator and if we hadn't made it in time, the boy would've–they needed me, you know that.”
“I know this whole damn city, this whole country thinks it needs you!” You throw your hand out in frustration. “Not as much as I do. This exhibition, my arts are important to me and apparently they’re not as important to you.”
Spencer huffs impatiently like he’s talking to a toddler throwing a tantrum. Maybe he is. “This exhibition runs for a whole month. It is unreasonable that you think it takes precedence over people’s lives.”
You take a step back as if he is fire trying to burn you.
“When you left me the first time,” you start, taking another step further. “I was a wreck. I didn't go out for weeks, I barely ate, and every bad thought in my head came crawling out. It took me months to open my windows. It took me months more to pick up a brush again. Look around, Spencer–what do you think this is?”
Dark Side of the Moon is what you call this exhibition. You use a lot of space and heavenly bodies imagery, combined with your signature flowers and experiment in texture. While Spencer's portrait was done in yellow and light purple, the rest of your paintings are hauntingly dark with grays and blacks and navies and purple. A lot of dark purple.
While you were out building other worlds, where was I?
Spencer's portrait is called Solar Eclipse. Your self portrait series is called the Lunar Eclipse with a lot of red and brown and purple. There are a lot of paintings of black holes and supernovas and seemingly black canvas with purple and red mixed in to create a subtle pattern.
His face crumples in realization and understanding.
Where's that man who'd throw blankets over my barbed wire?
“Where did you go, Spencer?” Your voice breaks, and you watch as tears start to stream down his face through your own blurred vision. “I’ve been waiting for you for months.”
“I'm right here,” he pleads, one hand reaching out to you before taking it back to his pocket. “I'm here, darling.”
I made you my temple, my mural, my sky
You shake your head, because he is not the same person you fell in love with–first time and then the second time. That man, that Spencer, is gone and replaced by the one standing in front of you.
Or maybe, he just doesn't love you–doesn't want you anymore.
Now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life
“I think it's time for you to go,” you say.
“No,” he says, allowing himself to touch you. You let him take a hold of your cheeks, both hands caressing your face. “I'm not going anywhere.”
His touch is burning amber on your skin, sharp and fire and painful.
Drawing hearts in the byline
Always taking up too much space or time
You assume I'm fine
Spencer swallows, fear and surprise and regret crowd his eyes. You are no profiler, but you can read him all the same.
“I promised myself that I won't let anyone make me feel like that again,” you whisper. “Including you, especially you."
You step out of his reach, pushing his hand away as he tries to hold you again. It feels like taking out a knife off of your chest–hot, burning, white pain as you bleed all over your dress.
"So tell me I'm wrong, tell me that nothing happened between you and JJ. Tell me that you still celebrate my love and not just tolerate it. Tell me that it's all in my head and have it be true–then maybe I'll forgive you.”
But what would you do if I,
You nod in resignation.
Break free and leave us in ruins?
“I’m staying at my sister’s,” you tell him. “And I’ll come by to pack up the next time you leave for a case. I’m not waiting for you anymore.”
Maybe you shouldn’t have stepped out. Maybe you should tell him to leave instead of leaving because as you walk towards your sister’s car, you see her, JJ, waiting in an FBI-assigned black SUV, blonde hair flying in the wind.
“Wait, wait!” She chases after you, making you stop in front of the passenger door of your sister’s sedan. Your hand stays on the handle, but you turn to face her anyway. “Wait, just, please, I’m sorry, I–it’s my fault, it’s not his fault. I–”
The doors of the gallery open and Spencer steps out, eyes searching around until they land on you. He opens his mouth, racing down the gallery steps to get to you.
Took this dagger in me and removed it
Gain the weight of you then lose it
Believe me, I could do it
Without letting him and JJ say another word, you open the car door and slide inside. Your sister doesn’t let another second pass before pressing her foot on the gas and speeding into the busy street.
“I’m so sorry,” she says.
“Me too,” you tell her.
If it's all in my head tell me now
Tell me I've got it wrong somehow
I know my love should be celebrated
But you tolerate it
I sit and watch you
𝟎.𝟏: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐲 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐲.
Spencer always lived under the stigma of being a child genius. His I.Q. was 187, he could read 20,000 words per minute and had an eidetic memory.
Everyone around him told him what to do, from his mother, to his "friends," to his teachers, to his neighbors.
"Hey Spencer, with that brain of yours you could make it in the government" "Spencer you could be part of NASA" "Spencer you could be a mathematical genius like Einstein!" "Spencer you're going to get into the CIA!"
"And where are you going to go to college? Because you know Harvard is already a lock for you" "I bet you'll go to YALE, that's where all the smart ones go" "Princeton is an excellent choice for you!" "MIT could open a lot of doors for you"
Spencer this, Spencer that.
But no one really thought about what Spencer wanted. Maybe he wanted to be a magician and make children happy with his tricks. Maybe he wanted to be a trapeze artist, or a fireman, or an astronaut, or just an ice cream man.
All these expectations of Spencer reached a point where he didn't even know what he wanted in life. He lived under the shadow of the expectations and visions people had placed on him, and he didn't want to let them down. He was just a kid, a kid scared of adult life who had to impose himself because others imposed it on him.
That's how his brain made him skip grades, have to enter high school at age 12, and have to suffer a lot of abuse from the grown-ups for just being a boy genius.
Spencer sometimes wished he could make his brain disappear and have a normal one. Then he could have normal friends, go to a normal school, have a relationship, experience the problems people his age have, and be able to feel the phases of adolescence like any other kid.
But things were not like that.
He had to live the life he had been dealt, with his genius brain and the damn adult problems at 13.
CalTech was a new life he had to accept, but it wasn't as bad as the one he had before. His mind was kept busy for a long period.
He was forced to grow up around books full of equations, chemical elements and mathematical problems, managing at 16 to get his first college degree, which was Mathematics, and the following year to get a PhD in it. But he did not dislike this.
But as they say it is never enough, he kept on studying until he was 21. Thanks to this, he became a doctor of two more degrees, Chemistry and Engineering, in addition to Psychology, Sociology and Criminology.
His social life at the university was not so hectic, in fact, he only stood out for the fact that he was a boy genius, and that was it. To other people, he was a person like any other.
Until one autumn day, in the middle of his 19 years and studying psychology, his paths were interrupted by crossing that of others, and that, probably, is the person who changed his life the last years of college.
Boy Wonder And The Rockstar | S.r
It was an ordinary day in the university library. Spencer had been rereading an encyclopedia of human anatomy for two hours. Why you may wonder, well, it was his way of killing time during his free time.
Acquiring knowledge was the best way to keep his brain fed and occupied, according to the boy.
He had eaten his sandwich a couple of minutes ago and let his brain feed on information at that moment, trying to persuade his intrusive thoughts at that minute. Through the pages you could see the muscular system, focusing on the leg and foot areas.
To be honest, it looked quite interesting.
That day, leaves were beginning to fall from the trees, filling the ground with their autumn colors; there was a gentle cool breeze, a strong smell of wet dirt and people were crowded in the warmer areas of the campus. It was no surprise to anyone that the library was one of the most crowded areas, the vast majority of people were gathered around the tables as large college texts lay open on them.
Spencer was sure he had seen more than one student curse at the fact that they couldn't find what they were looking for, and then walk out of the room in exhaustion. It wasn't the first time someone had cursed his name because they found themselves reading the text they were looking for and, besides, they weren't able to approach and ask for it.
He could believe it was cowardly on their part, maybe they were too shy to be able to do it or it was an excuse to put off studying what they were looking for. Even though he considered that the The study methods they had were not very good and, if they started studying earlier, they could increase their grad-
"Excuse me."
A voice interrupted the conversation Spencer was having with himself, pushing away his intrusive thoughts that were beginning to take over his mind. The young man's head turned and he saw a girl, perhaps his age, staring at the encyclopedia in front of him.
"I asked Miss Wellington about the Rouviére and Delmas encyclopedia of human anatomy, and well..." The girl looked over Spencer's shoulder. "She told me that maybe the boy sitting at the back table had it. There are no other tables in the back and you're the only guy sitting here, so I think my deduction is correct and you have it."
"Y-yes, this is the encyclopedia you're looking for." Spencer admitted, looking at the young woman.
More than looking at her, he was admiring her. She was wearing a red skirt and hoodie with some embroidered words on it, her legs were also wearing dark leggings and some rather damaged black converses, over it she was carrying another coat and a backpack; her arms were loaded with medical and anatomy books, plus her hair was disheveled.
"Great! Must be my lucky day that a cute guy has it." Her books fell onto the table and she sat down next to Spencer.
The boy could smell the scent of tobacco and mint mixed with the scent of cherry perfume.
"May I see?" Spencer turned to look at her and, even though he was reading that book first, his head nodded. "Fine! I just want to see..." The sound of the leaves was rapid, as if a fan was moving them. "This... Nervous system."
Suddenly, and as if by magic, a notebook appeared in front of them both and quickly the girl was beginning to write on the blank sheets, even though to Spencer it looked more like a scribble than a resume as such.
"Shit, what is this?" the girl paused to read more closely. "In the central axon, the electrical signal is converted into a chemical signal, and then releases the chemical signal with chemical messengers called neur-neurotransmitters." The sound of the pencil falling on the table made the boy startle.
"Nervous system?"
"That's right, I have a lecture in three days and I'm still trying to associate concepts in the nervous system. Like my nervous system isn't nervous anymore."
Spencer chuckled to himself, the girl had a funny sense of humor.
"In fact, when the brain interprets that we are in danger, it produces a rush of adrenaline that activates the heart and muscles to place them on alert, but if prolonged, it can lead to health problems such as cardiovascular disease like heart attack and is associated with hypertension and arrhythmias and is the enhancer of other cardiovascular risk factors." Spencer turned to look at the girl, who looked quite interested in what he was saying, jotting everything down in her notebook. "But it's not that your nervous system is 'nervous', it's that it interprets that it's in danger and so it sends that kind of stimulus to your body that makes you anxious."
"I see you know about the nervous system, much more than I do." The girl scanned him from head to toe. "Are you a medical student?"
"No, CalTech doesn't have a medical degree, but I am a doctor." The boy admitted.
"How old are you?"
"Nineteen."
"Shit, and you already have a doctorate?"
"Actually I have three."
Silence stretched between the two, caused by the woman's shock.
"Are you some kind of alien or is your brain too big that it stores more information than I can retain?"
"Well, I have an IQ of 187 so I can read 20,000 words per minute, plus I have eidetic memory. But I prefer the concept of being more advanced than others."
The girl stared at him.
But to his surprise, the young woman only let out a giggle.
"You're funny, I like it." No one had ever told Spencer that he was funny. In fact, he thought that adjective didn't directly relate to him. "I'm Y/N, Y/N L/N."
"Spencer...Spencer Reid." Y/N denied.
"No, you're not Spencer."
"Excuse me?"
"You're Dr. Spencer Reid." Spencer smiled, she was right. "Well, it's nice to meet you, dr. Reid."
"Nice to meet you, Miss L/N." They both smiled.
"Well, now that I know your name, dr. Reid, we can start our friendship."
Spencer never thought making friends was so easy, even though he knew it was because the girl had gone to the trouble of calling herself his "friend," without even knowing him.
But that didn't bother him, in fact, he found it nice that someone had decided to be his friend.
Boy Wonder And The Rockstar | S.r
Overnight, Spencer's evenings began to become more colorful, smelling of tobacco and mint, and filled with questions from Y/N, his new friend.
Although, at first, Spencer didn't seem comfortable around the girl, he quickly got used to it. He had learned several things about Y/N over the days, such as that she was a medical student at Pasadena City College, a college a couple of blocks from CalTech; she was the youngest in the family and had an older brother who had been diagnosed with leukemia a couple of years ago.
He had also learned that she was very into fashion, lived in an apartment complex nearby, smoked a couple of years ago, and only liked menthol tobacco cigarettes. Her favorite color was orange, but she didn't think it looked good on her, and she didn't see herself going to medical school, but she wanted to be a singer.
The first time Spencer heard Y/N sing was during a kermes in Pasadena City, she had been invited to sing on behalf of the medical school. Spencer never liked the idea of being around so many people, let alone at a kermes which was as unsanitary as possible, but his new "best friend" had begged him to go.
He couldn't say no.
He remembered perfectly how her hands shook with nerves, how she bit her lip as she cleared her throat and watched her bandmates, aka Y/N's other friends, rehearse with their instruments.
He knew she had practiced for this moment a bunch of times, had more than once arrived at Spencer's dorm wet from head to toe from running in the rain after a rehearsal, and hummed the songs under her breath every time they studied together in the library.
She was more than ready, but her own fears sometimes made her afraid of her talent.
Reid's eyes were on her, smiling confidently to convey that feeling as a guitar began to play the first chords, and announced the start of her performance.
Spencer didn't know what song it was, he wasn't even sure if the song was to his taste, but when he heard Y/N's voice he knew it had become his favorite song.
“Her name is Noelle
I have a dream about her, she rings my bell
I got gym class in half an hour
And, oh, how she rocks
In Keds and tube socks
But she doesn't know who I am
And she doesn't give a damn about me”
Their gaze was on each other, as if they were the only ones in that large space. The few times the eye contact was broken was when Y/N closed her eyes.
The song ended successfully and an avalanche of applause greeted Y/N, who thanked the audience for their attention. Soon another band filled the stage and for a few seconds, Spencer lost sight of Y/N. He wanted to tell her how great she had turned out, how all her effort and practice had made everything come out perfectly and that she looked like a total rockstar on stage.
"Spence! How was it, did you like it?" Y/N hugged the boy's arm, who turned to look at her with a sweet smile on his face.
"It was amazing, Y/N. Everyone loved it." Affirmed the boy.
"I was so nervous, I was so afraid it wouldn't go well, but I saw you there, and I felt like I could do it. You're my lucky charm, Spencie."
Spencer felt something jump in his chest.
"Let's get something to eat, I'm dying for some corn-dogs." Said the opposite.
"Y-yeah, let's get something to eat, my treat."
Boy Wonder And The Rockstar | S.r
The day Spencer was accepted into the FBI academy was probably the most bittersweet day of his entire life.
At 22 years old, and in the middle of finishing his college semester for what felt like the fifth time, a letter arrived in his dorm room.
A letter of acceptance.
He could feel that all his hard work had been rewarded by whoever was up there. He quickly put on his sneakers and ran a marathon to the medical building at Pasadena City College.
His best friend's short red hair he could quickly visualize as he saw her smoking by the entrance, she seemed to be listening to something on her MP4 and bobbing her head to the beat of-who-knows-what song.
"Y/N! Y/N!" Spencer's voice sounded agitated, trying to get her best friend's attention.
The, now, redhead removed her earpiece and turned to see the tall boy running towards her.
"Spence?" From her mouth came the tobacco smoke, causing her to let the cigarette burn between her fingers.
"I made it, I got into the academy!"
The two big hazel eyes made contact with those of the girl, who dropped the cigarette to the sidewalk and hugged her friend tightly.
"I can't believe it, Spence! You did it! You did it! My goodness, I couldn't be prouder!" The younger girl began to do some jumping jacks as she didn't let go of her grip on his embrace.
"Thank you, Y/N. I couldn't have done it without you, you were the one who stuck with me through this whole process."
"You don't have to thank me, dorkie. I knew you'd make it, they couldn't leave out a genius like you." Soon they both disengaged from the embrace and the girl looked at the boy's face. "W-where is the academy? Tell me."
"I don't know, I-I didn't fully read the letter." He admitted embarrassed.
"Then read it! Go on." The girl took him by the arm and forced him to sit down on the faculty stairs.
Slowly, Spencer began to read the letter while Y/N listened intently to every word.
"The course begins on September 23rd of the current year in..." A pause.
Y/N looked at Spencer, who had stopped reading the letter.
"Where, Spence, what does it say?"
"The course begins September 23rd of the current year in Quantico, Virginia."
Y/N felt like a bucket of cold water had just been dropped on her.
Quantico? That was on the other side of the country!
"Q-quantico? Spence, that's on the other side of the-"
"Country, I know Y/N. I-I... I can't do it, I can't."
"What the fuck are you talking about!" The girl stood up startled, looking accusingly at her best friend. "No, I refuse. You have to do it, it's your dream, Spence! What you've always wanted for the last three years that I've known you, I refuse to let you back down now, I won't allow it!"
Spencer looked up from the letter, watching Y/N who was looking at him with her face burning with anger.
"You know I can't do that, what's going to happen to my mom? You know what's going on with her and her schizophrenia, I can't leave her alone."
"She would want you to go, Spence. Her happiness is where yours is, you know she'll be able to do it, there are plenty of options to help her." A long silence settled between the two of them.
Spencer didn't want to leave California, he didn't want to leave his mother or Y/N, he couldn't.
"Spencer Reid, I know what you're thinking right now, but I won't let you let this opportunity pass you by. You have dreamed of this exact moment for years, for as long as I have known you you have always wanted to go to the academy and you have done everything in your power to do so. Now they are offering it to you on a silver platter, you have to do it, there is nothing more you can do here in California. You've already studied all the existing careers in the world, you've already done what anyone in 50 years would have done and at your short 22 years you're already a doctor of three careers." The girl settled back down beside him, letting her icy hand wrap around Spencer's warm one. "You can't just limit yourself to staying here just because you have an engagement, the world has to know who Dr. Spencer Reid is like I know him, you have to go."
Spencer drew an elongated smile, feeling his body fill with that feeling of sadness that pervaded him from head to toe.
The redhead's words were true, it was his dream. But he didn't want to leave the only thing that made him happy on the other side of the country, he would love to carry it in his pocket to Virginia and have his dose of serotonin after each day.
He didn't want to stop smelling her tobacco and minty breath, the cherry smell coming off her clothes and the blueberry smell coming off her hair. He wanted to keep seeing the reddish locks of hair on his clothes and the cheesy paper notes in his pockets every time they met. He wanted to keep listening to the music on Y/N's MP4 every time he went to her apartment and drink coffee with lots of sugar that she made for him, keep hearing her voice in the shower and get biology questions at three in the morning every time she had a test.
He wanted to go to thrift stores to try on printed T-shirts and watch Y/N's camera fill up with pictures of the two of them, keep going to her shows with her band and eat frozen pizza after every gig.
He wanted to keep being with her.
But if she was letting him go, then he had to let her go too.
"I think I can go on living without hearing your bad jokes." Spencer's words lifted Y/N's spirits, who gave him a playful smile.
"Hey! My jokes are the best, last time you laughed for two hours."
"Because it was stupid."
They both laughed, letting the tension of the moment go with the last echo of their laughter.
"So you'll go across the country to make me proud?"
"Yes, I'll go make you proud."
Y/N's arms wrapped around Spencer's body, resting her head in the space of his shoulder and chin.
"I'm glad you didn't make a dumb decision."
Staying here with you isn't a dumb decision, Spencer thought.
They both pulled apart.
"Well, screw the skeleton. Let's go to the library and write your answer."
The girl's small hand imprisoned the boy's large hand, guiding him to the library to write what would be Spencer's fate.
The flight from California to Washington was five hours.
Five hours where Spencer and Y/N would be separated, and they would have to accept that fate had something different in store for the two of them.
Despite California being a sunny paradise, that day he wanted to keep the two friends company as they said goodbye at the airport.
"You already know my number, you know you can call me whenever you want." Commented the girl, who was in charge of carrying the book she had given him to read during the trip.
"I'm not such a fan of technology, you know that."
"There are pay phones over there too, Spence. It only costs a couple of cents to call me, plus they must have landlines there, and you have my email." The girl stopped in front of the door that separated goodbyes with new beginnings. "And if not, you can send me a letter. You know my address."
"A letter doesn't sound bad at all, in fact, for centuries, it was one of the most widely used means of communication by human civilizations since man began to write and whose importance transcended nations. The oldest courier service ever found was in Egypt in 2400 B.C. and in 1840, Sir Rowland Hill created the first postage stamp, which was called Penny Black, which was a profile drawing of Queen Victoria of England that had the rate 'One Penny' written on it."
"Oh Spence, I'm going to miss your fun facts about absurdly boring things." Commented the girl before she could hug him.
Spencer felt his heart clench.
"I'll miss you listening to me." They both turned in an embrace so tight it could take all the oxygen out of their bodies.
Neither wanted to be the first to say goodbye, neither was ready to leave the other. Their hearts were bound together like puzzle pieces, and just as when you lose one, the puzzle will no longer be complete.
"Now, you must go, your flight is about to leave." Y/N commented, separating from the young man as she wiped away the small tear that escaped from her eyes. "Miss me a lot, huh? And show off how pretty your best friend is."
"Always. Remember that wherever you are, whatever you do or whoever you're with, you'll always be in my heart."
A pout settled in Y/N's mouth, who felt like she was letting a part of her go with Spencer.
"Don't forget about me, because I will never forget about you." Demanded the girl, who was pushing the boy to go for his flight.
"It's impossible for me to forget you, I have an eidetic memory." He said laughing, waving goodbye as he received the book the girl handed him.
The two met in a final embrace, where Spencer could smell the girl's cherry and menthol tobacco scent for the last time.
"Write me!" Y/N vociferated, waving goodbye to the boy who nodded and disappeared behind the airport doors.
Y/N and Spencer didn't know that at that moment fate would place them on trial, causing their paths to diverge for many years until, magically, they would come together again.
“When two souls are meant to meet, fate brings worlds closer, erases distances, joins paths and defies the impossible.” Anonymous.
i was thinking of a good story where it's "the reader and Spencer's wedding they are having a good time and Penelope wants to congratulate them but can't find them, she walks around and finally spots reader she is resting against the wall of a cleaning closet, they talk for a bit and she leaves, when Penelope leaves spencer comes from out of readers dress, and says that that was a close one"
Wedding Bliss | Spencer Reid
Pairing: Spencer Reid x fem!reader
Summery: The post-wedding bliss hits differently after the ceremony, and Spencer and you intend to make the most of it.
Warning/s: just tooth rotting fluff, allusions to smut that happened, wedding, marriage, Penelope's crying, short fic, possible grammar and spelling mistakes, and just all of the love
Author's note: this is just too freaking cute, I just changed the part where Penelope and the reader are walking around, hope that's okay.
I Was Thinking Of A Good Story Where It's "the Reader And Spencer's Wedding They Are Having A Good Time
You knew that you would remember this day for the rest of your life and all of the feelings that this day had brought you.
The feeling of you walking down the rose filled aisle with bouquet in your hands as the back of your long dress was trailing behind you slowly. The feeling of the rose petals of your bouquet against your fingers. The look on Spencer's face as you got closer and closer to him standing with Morgan by his side. The lone tear that rolled down his face once he saw you. The smiles on Emily's and JJ's faces. The proud look that Rossi was wearing. The little smile on Aaron's face as he waited in the middle of the aisle to get Spencer and you married to each other. Penelope's pink handkerchief with which she wiped her tears away.
Once you finally reached Spencer, you turned around to give your bouquet to Jack before you turned back around only to see Spencer holding his hand out for you to take. You took it without any hesitation.
Aaron's speech and Spencer's and yours vows were exchanged, the rings were placed and before you knew it you were kissing the love of your life, your soulmate, the one that you married.
The ceremony after the wedding was just perfect. Everyone was very excited and had so much fun. The cake was cut, and the bouquet was thrown, and after the first dance between Spencer and you, the two of you disappeared once you noticed that everyone was dancing, too.
Penelope was looking everywhere for the two of you as she wanted to congratulate Spencer and you one more time. However, as much as she looked around, she didn't see you anywhere.
Thankfully, she saw Derek with a glass of champagne in his hand, talking to Hotch and laughing with him. So she decided to quickly come over and as soon as she did, Derek noticed her.
"Hey, baby girl," he turned to her and smiled, "What's up?"
"Have you seen Mr. and/or Mrs. Reid anywhere?" Penelope asked him as she looked around for you. "I looked everywhere for them, but I didn't find them."
"I think I saw them sneaking around behind the reception so I think that you probably-", Derek talked, but Penelope quickly interrupted him.
"Thank you so much, hot chocolate, bye!" She said before she ran off to look for you, not even looking over her shoulder at Derek.
"-shouldn't look for them." Derek finished with a smirk as he lookedat Aaron. "Well... they're busted I tell you what..."
Penelope walked around until she finally reached her destination. She stood there and looked around for you once more before she called out your name. The call of your name was followed by the rustling and extremely quick and quiet whispers. So quiet, she almost missed them.
"Y/N?" she asked as she found herself standing right in front of you. You were leaned against the white cleaning closet, and you seemed to be a little put of breath.
"Oh, hi, Penelope!" you exclaimed, trying to desperately cover the fact that you were out of breath and flushed.
You then noticed that she was probably going to ask you more questions about the fact that your cheeks were burning red and you were out of breath, so you took a deep breath and asked her if she needed anything. A desperate attempt to get her to change the topic.
"Yes!" Penelope smiled at you, "Yes, I did. I just wanted to say "congratulations" once more to Mr. and Mrs. Reid."
"Awww, Pen," you spoke softly, feeling like you're going to cry. "I love you so much."
"I love you to, sweet cheeks," she smiled at you before she suddenly turned serious, standing up straighter. "Now, I know why you are here."
You panicked.
"Y-You do?" you asked her, slowly.
"Yes, I do," she continued, "to get some peace and quiet from the guests and the whole ceremony."
"I-I am!" you felt like you were washed by the wave of relief that went straight through you at what she said. "I just need some peace, yes."
"I knew it!" she pointed her finger at you jokingly before she frowned her eyebrows as she looked around. "But where is Spencer?"
"Oh, he just went to the bathroom." you quickly came up with a lie as you felt yourself get flushed again.
"Oh," Penelope paused before she continued, "Well, I guess I’m going to congratulate him again a bit later than. I'll leave you to it."
You felt yourself freeze once you saw her going in for a hug, her arms wrapped tightly around you. You were a little stiff as you hugged her, but luckily, she didn't even notice.
And with that and a small smile, she walked away.
Once she walked away far enough, you tapped the back of your long dress. "She's gone."
Lifting the back of your dress up, Spencer got up from underneath your dress. You continued to lean against the wall of the cleaning closet as you watched his also flushed cheeks and his hair that was now even messier than it was before.
"Thank God she didn't suspect anything." Spencer said as he ran his hand through his hair, catching his breath.
"Yeah..." you sighed, "... thank God."
"Now," Spencer said as he walked over to you before slowly lowering down on the ground. Right at the spot where he was before Penelope looked for you, "I hope that you didn't think that we are done here."
"I-I... am..." you stuttered as you watched his eyes filled with lust, but also love, as you watched him watch you.
"Lift your dress back up, love."
