Without that information you're shipping something different! if they met on an equal footing, approached each other out of mutual interest, that's a completely different story!

Obviously I'm very into megzag getting back together (although this wasn't always the case) but. Their starting the game as exes is so fantastic.

You look out the courtyard overlook the first time and Zag is just like "well first I have to escape the world's ultimate prison and then I'll have to see my ex 😬"

You're right. It WOULD be awkward if the first time you saw the older woman you had a very intense relationship with after your dad set the two of you up hoping she would make you grow up but then you dumped her... was when she was sent to kill you

Honestly that's such a batshit order from Hades. "Remember that son of mine I tried to set you up with? Yeah he's trying to leave home, kill him." Even more 😬 in that there's the underlying continuity of "get him under control." God that's a mess (said with absolute delight)

The game, as far as I recall, doesn't really play up Hades' machinations coming between them nearly as much as I love to, but like. imagine Meg's "Your father sent me, I'd rather be on your bad side than his" after a pattern of her hewing to her duty whenever there was a conflict.

Like do you think Zag had a moment of "oh I'm WELL aware of that" when she said that? Because I have to think so.

One hint of their past conflict that we do see is Zagreus's attitude toward Megaera's work ethic--eg in talking about Tisiphone Zag goes "so she's got no work-life balance? must be hard" and Meg snaps at him in a way that makes me think he's made similar digs at her before

Which is interesting because as much as the text primarily positions Zag as the one who was immature and said stupid things and needs to apologize--"conflates her work ethic with moral correctness" is literally the flaw listed on Meg's character sheet. He's onto something here.

Once again I am wishing that there was some instance of Megaera seeing where she made her own problems wrt Zagreus, seeing that she shares the blame. We see Nyx nudging her toward this realization with her sisters, but nothing wrt Zag except "I, too, wish for a lot of thigns."

She has a responsibility to own her share of the blame, to name it for Zag's sake. Oh Furies aren't much for apologies? Tough titties, that's the cost of being in a relationship, it's time to get better at it

Just--sorry--this is SO important in this relationship, one that started with Meg explicitly positioned as superior to Zag, and that continues to feature power play that follows those lines. It is *vital* that they actually deal with each other as equals.

Meg is a perfectionist, and she is divinely inclined towards noticing wrongdoing and punishing it eternally. It is ergo *very uncomfortable* for her to name the ways in which she's fucked up. Even more uncomfortable than it is just to be aware of them.

If some part of your identity is wrapped up in being The Right One or The Good One, you are simultaneously going to be tortured by all your own flaws and very, very defensive of them ever being acknowledged by someone else. And we *see* that this is how Meg understands herself.

So I get her willingness to just elide the part of the process where she apologizes and to focus instead on moving forward, holding herself to stricter standards. But this is done to preserve the ego-conception of herself as superior (to Zag!) & that is something that needs to go.

And it will be healthier *for her* as well as for the relationship to have the conversation that puts Zag into a position to say "yes, that was awful, that hurt me; I am fully aware of that and still want to be with you anyway."
