HADESTOWN SENTENCE STARTERS - PT II

"Why would any of this scare me?"

There's a scrunch to Sasuke's nose that suggested he was offended, as he turned back to the apprehended villain to make sure that their hands were properly. It took him a second to realize that Sasuke's complete lack of any battle anxiety during the short scuffle might of come off as a bit suspicious, but he doesn't linger on it. The likes of Bakugo and Todoroki could cover those tracks -- they ran into every battle as though they were born seasoned 'heroes'. Why not lean into the same type of arrogance?

Dark eyes flickered back towards Wriothesley when he's sure that they're properly handled, even clapping his hands as though patting them free of dust. He didn't even have to use his quirk to intercept him - saving himself the potential headache so early into today's 'internship'.

" -- I'm not some useless kid." He half mutters, trailing eyes to the ground as some sidekicks came up to handle the villian in question, after asking the pro hero some short questions before beginning to depart. " I can carry my own weight."

It's what he's been taught to do, after all.

"You realize they're just baiting you, right?"

Sasuke glanced over a bit slowly towards the blonde, letting his eyes trail further towards the snickering sounds coming from Kaminari and Sero only a couple of feet away. It takes everything to not let his lips twitch in his own amusement, rolling his eyes before looking back towards where Katsuki was seated beside him, a leg crossed over the other as he glanced towards the open book he had been studying before his boyfriend's tell-tale yell.

" ... To be fair, you make it incredibly easy, so I don't know if I completely fault them ---"

There's silence as dark eyes flicker over towards the other, brow quirking subtly as he gave him a once scalding once over. Had it been anyone of 'importance' - such as one of the U.A. teachers or even one of his 'classmates' - maybe he would felt a prickle of something he'd call anxiety. Worry, even, if he was to push it.

Not that he ever thought himself to be so poor at his assignment that he would get himself caught, but ---

But from him?

Sasuke's silent for a couple of more moments, before letting his head lean back against the wall he was partially leaned against, arms crossed over his chest. There's the faintest hint of shrug, even, obsidian gaze lingering on Iguchi all the while.

" ... And?" He finally asks, letting the challenge drip from the simple word.

"What ... ?" There's a beat of surprise before eyes narrowed slightly; a small rippled of frustration running through him. Sasuke could guess why he was being advised to hang back from this one, given his long term position, but ...

"There's really nothing I can do to help??"

"why don't you sit this one out, kid?" it wasn't a particularly hard mission, but it was one where they might be seen. the last thing they needed was for sasuke to be caught on camera with them.

                                “is your entire generation this stubborn? yeesh, take it easy, kiddo. we’ve got all day to finish this and you’re gonna burn yourself out — or worse, mess up and miss something important.”

"I’m not going to! I know what to do, I just want it to get done...” Sasuke scowled, shooting the winged hero a glare through the beginnings of a headache. He was right, he could feel the beginnings of his body trying to tell him to slow down at least a fraction, but he refused to slow down. Even if the one telling him to was his supposed ‘mentor’.

He turns on his heels, snorting faintly before he continued forward, fingers pressing into his temple in hopes of making the budding pain calm down. “I’m going ahead. I want this done.”

                                “you’re gonna get so stressed you’re gonna die,” she casually retorts, plopping down beside him, kicking her legs up on the table. she fixes him with an amused glance, watching him sharpen his knife. dabi had brought sasuke in with him and though they hadn’t said much about their past, they were close. it almost made her jealous — she had never had anyone like that, even if dabi did train sasuke until he was bloody. “don’t you know you’re allowed to have fun? even tomura plays video games. you really can’t be that boring.”

Sasuke had been hoping that maybe his ‘boring’ response would of been enough to get her off his back... but that had clearly been wistful thinking on his part. The only sign of his displeasure and irritation at Toga plopping herself down alongside him was the deepening of his frown, but he doesn’t pause in his task to give her even a glance. He barely interacted with any of the other members of the league; partially because of the distance Dabi purposely kept between them.

He resisted the urge to roll his eyes, pausing in his motions to inspect his weapon. “ -- I don’t care about all of that.  I have things i need to accomplish, and playing video games while I could be getting stronger sounds idiotic.” He doubted that she would carry his words back to Shiragaki, but his stomach clenches at the thought. No matter. “I don’t care if you think i’m boring. I don’t care about what you think about me at all, actually.”

                                "g r o s s, you smell just like dabi.“ smoke and charred skin — though she can’t spot any charred skin on sasuke himself. he and sasuke spent a lot of time training together, which she isn’t surprised about. they joined the league together, after all. "why don’t you ever do anything fun?”

“I don’t remember asking you.” Sasuke rolled his eyes before fixing Toga with a tired glare, arms crossed over his chest. ( Of course the only one in the League closest to his age was annoying as hell. ) He looked away from her and back down to one of his knives that he was sharpening before the interruption. “I’m not here to have fun. More than enough of my time is already being taken up by infiltrating U.A. and training. Go annoy someone else.”

                               "this is the real deal now, kid. shit’s about to go down. stay smart – shoot to kill, nothing else. they don’t care that you’re a kid. when you’re done with you objective, fall back and meet where we planned, alright?“

Sasuke could feel his heart fluttered rapidly in his chest, even though his expression was the carefully practiced neutrality that he’s learned to don. A part of him whispered to himself as though in a soft plea - i’m just a kid; i shouldn’t be here ... - he forced those thoughts away before Dabi could read even a hint of it on his face. ( The consequences have been beaten into him --- they won’t care if he’s a kid. They will kill him if they get a chance to. Or worst. ) He was counting on him --- the league was counting on him.

His revenge was counting on him.

“Alright.” He gave a sharp nod, sucking in a deep and careful breath as his eyes left the older, taking a meaningful step back. They’ve gone over what he was required to do over and over again... It he couldn’t succeed, then... “I won’t let you down.”

                               “please let me walk you to the nurse. it’s the least i could do.“ brows furrow with concern. "it was all the rubble i made rain down that got you hurt. i’m so sorry, sasuke –”

“I’m--- I said i’m fine.” Fingers dug into his arm, swallowing the hiss of pain that threatened to escape him; willing his expression to remain as impassive as possible. His arm was killing him, along with the leg that had also gotten hit pretty bad by the aforementioned rubble, but the last thing on his mind was assigning blame. They were training -- Ochako was simply going all out. Just as Sasuke was --- if there was any negative feelings, it was all aimed towards himself, for not being faster.

Besides, he’s obtained worst injuries in the name of training.

“Quit apologizing -- I can walk there myself.”

                                “hey sasuke, i didn’t know you could dance. or at least… everyone’s been trying to get you to dance.“ he scratches the back of his head as he lowers his books onto the table. "i’m surprised mina hasn’t already dragged you into rehearsals. they’ve been brutal… but that’s only because i can’t dance.”

“I don’t dance.” Sasuke replied firmly, arms crossed over his chest stiffly; eyes closed with his head ducked just slightly. “Which is the same thing I told her, too.” Mina had been a bit overzealous when trying to tug him into the ridiculous rehearsals with the rest of the class, which he had managed to avoid. He wouldn’t be caught dead doing whatever they were forced to do.

“I’m not really fond of making a fool of myself.”

                                “now — we can do this one of two ways and i will leave it up to you, young uchiha.“ he cants his head just a fraction to the side, eyes focused on sasuke. it wasn’t often taiyō took interns, but because it was rina requesting that he take on sasuke, he accepted the challenge. "you can be honest with me and tell me what your strengths and your faults are, specifically with your quirk, or you can come at me with all that you’ve got so that i may see it first hand myself. beware — if you choose the latter and you decide to hold back, i will be very disappointed.”

Sasuke still wasn’t completely sure how he felt about the whole ‘internship’ thing; if he was excited for it to start or already exasperated. There hadn’t been a pro-hero that he had particularly wanted more than another, and if he was honest it just made everything so much more complicated. There was a small tingle of anxiety underneath his skin, being so close to a pro-hero but he shoved it aside. Now wasn’t the time to falter --- not when he had things to prove. He wasn’t a pathetic child.

“ ... “ Silence drifted between them for a moment before Sasuke unpocketed his hands, shifting slightly so he could get into a more offensive and alert position. “--- I don’t believe in holding back.” It’s not what he’s been taught. “Actions always do speak louder than words, sensei.”

                                “i know you’ve been pretty busy, but y'got a minute? i’d… like to ask a favor of you. it — has to do with training.“

“Hm?” Sasuke’s steps slowed considerably at the vaguely familiar voice, shifting slightly so that he could look at Shinsou directly. Brows furrowed slightly; the only physical indication that he held his attention. “.... Sure. What is it?”

OF COURSE he wasn’t here t’ talk family issues – 

its all people like them got anyway, right? issues as far as the eye can fucking see, no damn wonder he’d react the way he did, no questions further asked on that topic since, if it’s true that he was in any way related to itachi, it’ll mean dabi finally found SOMEONE WHO’S ACTUALLY USEFUL TO THE LEAGUE the way itachi was and is up to this point. 

complicated family matters would make this whole situation more delicate to deal with, though, and neither of them supposes the league was up for YET ANOTHER DRAMA-REVEAL; and least of all dabi, especially when it comes to this topic.

last word’s exaggerated in DAMN FANCY MANNER with a flick of their right hand, too; other’s resting on the table close to the glass full of useless warm water.

Black eyes tear away from Dabi with some effort; glaring into his own glass of melting ice as his stomach twisted with the weight of his disdain. When was he to get out of his shadow; especially when it seemed to stretch so far and cover him so completely that just when he thought he was out, it came to shade over him once more? If the villain knew Itachi, then what was he trying to see when he looked at him right now? Was he hoping for an Itachi 2.0; like everyone else seemed to back then?

If he’s as competent a villain as he was a hero, then...

Fingers pulled at his glass, tugging it towards him before lifting it to his lips; taking a short sip of his moderately cool water, pulling it back to watch the deformed ice cube clink against the glass. His connection to Itachi was a ticket into the League? Seriously?

... If it was only a connection in the thinnest sense of the words, then this could still work in his favor. Besides, he hasn’t seem that man in years --- there’s no reason to think that would change.

“--- Fine. Then yes I am --- I’m his younger brother.” The ‘younger’ went without saying, he figured, but might as well claim the identity in it’s whole. He’ll let this shadow get him where he needed to be, and then he’ll burst free until he was large enough to not be covered by it any longer. “However, I don’t enjoy talking about him. We’re brothers by blood, but he’s been dead to me for a long time now. Don’t bring him up again.”

Perhaps a kid like him shouldn’t try to ‘order’ someone like Dabi; especially given the older’s own reputation, but submission wasn’t in his nature. Even in the face of danger.

“He’s nothing but a coward --- I’m nothing like him. So don’t expect me to be a miniature version.”

“I know--- The heroes are the ones who make the villains. They’re the ones who don’t care what happens to us, and think us to be monsters. And if I’m caught, they will lock me away. I know.”

Arms are crossed stiffly over his chest; dark eyes glancing away from Dabi as he felt his heart twist and thump in something like anxiety. Sasuke was used to this spiel -- has heard some variation of it over the years, and especially when he and the League initially got the idea and got him prepared to enroll him in U.A. to gather information.

But aside from the usual annoyance that tugged at him, there was something else underneath the facade --- guilt. Showing up here had been harder than it had been perhaps a month ago; the thought that today was the day for him to meet and update Dabi a nauseating thought in the back of his mind as he tried to act normal with his classmates.

... Fake classmates.

He wondered if it was obvious-- If Dabi could see the way that U.A. was slowly affecting him, of how interacting with peers his own age who treated him as though he was ‘normal’ was melting the once frozen resolve that the older had all but beaten into him over the years. Was that why he said that? Was it a reminder and a warning all at once?

Still not backing down, Sasuke sighs in annoyance, his eyes still locked on one of the broken windows of the abandoned warehouse they were tucked into, quieting his thoughts. If he harbored too much anxiety, then he really would find out about the thoughts he’s been having... About if perhaps this path and mission he was on was truly the right one. If maybe... he was on the wrong side after all.

“I’m not an idiot. I know all of that. I haven’t forgotten why i’m at U.A.” Teeth chewed on his bottom lip. “... But I’m telling the truth. There... hasn’t been anything of note going on that’s worth reporting. Things have been quite... Just getting ready for the Sports Festival coming up, I guess...”
