I work in an organic synthesis lab, so pretty fucking bad when it comes to the amount of different toxic chemicals. My guess is we have +3000 bottles / containers in our department alone, but nobody knows the exact number.

From what I can tell through a bit of detective work, the chemicals have not been properly checked for at least a DECADE.

I wish I was making this up. I was hired to fix things and I'm trying, but today scared the crap out of me.

I found in no particular order:

- Hydrofluoric acid. Improperly marked and stored for ?? Years and unknown percent solution. It had turned green. We do not own the antidote.

- 5L 40% hydrogen peroxide. Unknown age but guessing at least 10 years. I had to open it to ensure no pressure built up 🙃

- a cabinet full of solvents that have been there for a minimum of 8 years. Includes at least 2 peroxide forming liquids and it's unclear whether they are stabilised.

For those who don't do chemistry these 3 are respectively: death upon skin contact, explosive risk and bad explosive risk with cancer bonus.

I have retreated to my office for a break to contemplate what the fuck to do about all this.

I feel like a lot of people don't realize that studying science is connected to a lot of vocabulary.

Scientific language has its own words, rules and meanings and you have to first understand those rules and the vocabulary before you can actually understand WHAT you're studying.

You can look at a page for 5 hours- if you don't understand the name of the Protein or Molecule or Variable and the reason they are named the way they are, you won't understand the science!

So to anyone who's thinking about studying science or wants to simply understand it better, view it as a foreign language! Learn the rules and Vocabulary!

I wish more people were outraged about this. More people should be. In the span of what? A month? Netflix has not only cancelled Dead Boy Detectives, an incredible show with great acting, writing, film quality, etc... and characters that are queer, but they've announced a "modern retelling" of The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, you know, the book that was so gay it was used as evidence in the author's sodomy trial, and they have chosen to make Basil and Dorian Gray siblings. I have seen so little talk about it, because people are feeling exhausted and defeated, but you know what? Exhausted silence only sends the message to this bloody company that they can continue to do this type of shit and nothing bad will come of it because people don't care enough to fight back. What choice do we have but to fight? We have to fight and show people that we won't tolerate this kind of thing. Dead Boy Detectives was a brilliant show, and this isn't the first time such an incident has happened. Dorian Gray does not deserve this atrocious "modern retelling". I am sick of being met with silence and really, it's overdue that we let these companies know how exactly they can fuck off. I so desperately want to see given to these works the same treatment that people gave to OFMD when it got cancelled. No one else is going to do it for you. Not enough people realise how strong their individual voice can be if they stand up and shout it out. Let's show these companies what fucking happens when they pull these kinds of stunts. Every action has a consequence.

I like stories like this to remind people that SCIENTISTS ARE HUMANS AND THEY CAN BE STUPID

So I was once actually collecting data in a frozen river, and another guy fell in, filled up his waders and everything. He was wearing cotton (we were floored), and I had the car keys so I was like “alright, I’ll walk you back to the car to make sure you’re okay. Then you can strip down in there and get the heat going. There’s a blanket to wrap up in.” And he looked at me like I was insane. He said, “what? I’m fine.” I informed him that actually, if he stayed outside in subzero temperatures, soaking wet, in cotton, he was Licherly going to Freeze To Death, and he was like, “it’s not the 1800s lmao.”

And then while the guy in charge Forced him to go back to the car and strip, I had to stand there in a frozen river absolutely bewildered by the implication that a Wildife Biologist thought hypothermia is like, an old timey disease that people stopped getting at some point.

lmao me

I was being attacked by a giant stag beetle and my cousin (who is a biologist irl) kept telling me cool facts about it instead of helping.

I think what a lot of people need to realize is that male and female are just a collection of traits typically found together, and they need to TRULY realize and internalize it, not just say it like a cute lil slogan they don't actually believe

Even amongst completely perisex, cisgender, there will be differences from the typical idea of male/female sexual dimorphism

cis-perisex males will, generally speaking, be taller than cis-perisex females, yet in my lifetime, I have met TONS of cis-perisex women who are sognificantly taller than their male peers, similarly, I have met plenty of cis-perisex men who have a more "feminine" fat distribution.

There is no real way to define 'female' or 'male' in a way that does not exclude someone, even among cis perisex people.

This is why I as a trans person refuse to answer people when they come up to me with the whole "what is a woman" bullshit, not only because it is never asked in good faith, but because anything other than; "it can't be truly defined, the only way to tell if someone is a woman is if they tell you" will exclude someone.

(I'd also like to add that this does not mean being a woman has no meaning, simply that what it means to be a woman depends on the person defining it for themselves :))

great ask!

human biology really does whatever, especially when it comes to biological sex. hormones will do whatever they want. the body will grow whatever tissues it wants, store fat wherever it wants, and make your voice sound however it wants. it doesn't matter what gender you were assigned on paper. it doesn't matter what body parts you have half the time. so much of what makes us look like ourselves goes on completely under the hood

biological sex is not a binary. the sooner people catch on to this, the better. it really is this simple. bodies do not come in strict "male" and "female" packages. they're constellations of traits that may or may not exist within a person's body. you are not in control of what your hormones and reproductive health system do. this leads to a lot of different possible combinations of body types and appearances. we really need to embrace this. it's not a scary thing.

it's beautiful. the diversity in human biological sex is wonderful; our bodies can grow in so many unique ways, we should celebrate this!

Carrie is fat in the book. Learning that completely blew me.

The use of pigs blood makes so much more sense. The reason she was bullied so relentlesly, even though she does nothing to nobody, makes so much more sense. The relationship with her mother makes so much more sense.

I know they aren't going to, but I wish they would cast someone fat in this new Carrie adaptation. From the articles I've seen, they are already speculating which skinny actress it's going to be.

How many times can they tell the story the same exact way? The answer: endlessly.

I don't know what's worse the total erasure of fat people in movies or the only story we get to see ourselves in are the love yourself fatty movies.

i think one of the most depressing things about having severe mental illness is that i spend so much of my life observing, but not participating. i watch people get better jobs, join clubs, make other friends, go on outings, and cultivate hobbies. and what do i do exactly?

i rot in bed and scroll online even though i don’t actually like the internet that much. i’m too scared to leave the house regularly because i feel unsightly. i have no pictures of myself to look back on, and nothing that really marks the passage of time except which classes i’m taking that semester.

i wish i had a completely new brain.

So i'm a biology student, and a lot of the time, the technical language is actually so that the scientific research is understandable to a WIDER audience.

For example, in chemistry, there is a verry specific system in how you name molecules. To people who are not scientists, it will sound like wordvomit. However, to other scientists its 100% understandable. And because everyone around the world uses the same vocabulary, research papers can be uses by everyone to help with THEIR research, so its way easier to educate yourself AS a scientists and to find evidence supporting your work (or showing that its wrong).

If you're not a scientist and you care about the research, that's what science journals are for. They take the research and put it into common words so that you dont have to have a degree in nomenclature to understand whats going on.

The whole “scientists use big words on purpose to be exclusive” is such a bunch of anti-intellectual bullshit. Specific and concise language exists for a reason; you need the right words to convey the right meaning, and explaining stuff right is a hugely important part of science. Cultures that live around loads of snow have loads of words to describe different types of snow; cultures that live in deserts have loads of words to describe different types of sand. Complex language is needed for complex meaning.

A while back my pharmacist saw my deadname on my profile and accidentially called it out, he corrected and deleted my deadname from the system so only my preferred name shows up now. There was a crowd of people behind me, so as he hands over the pills he apologized, in equal tone and volume as when he called my deadname and lied saying it's been a long day and he didn't mean to call out -his own- name. I quietly told him it was fine and he didn't need to do that for my sake.

His response: "No, it's my name now."

I went to the pharmacist yesterday, his nametag is my deadname. He informed me he's immigrating and in the process he's changed his first name to my deadname to have an English sounding name. That's why he's now able to get a reprint of his nametag to be my deadname. And repeated, with the intense seriousness of someone who is going to die on this hill: "It's mine now. Not yours. I'm taking." His tone indicated that decision is final.

Bro literally deadnamed me once, and has committed to flat out stealing my deadname. It's his now. Legally. Officially. I over heard his co-workers call him by the name.

There's no "wrong" way to live YOUR life! The only important thing is that you are happy.

Can we stop using "still lives with their parents" or "unemployed" or "doesn't have a drivers license" or "didn't graduate high school" as an insult or evidence that someone is a bad person? Struggling with independence or meeting milestones is not a moral failing.
