Today my professor picked up a garter snake, said “Ow!” five times as it bit him, set it back down, and said, “Okay. That’s one defense mechanism snakes have.”

this isn’t autism, but when I get stressed about people not emailing me back in a timely manner, I go and make a chart of their past email response times, find the average, plot the average on my calendar, and then wait for that date to be stressed

i aspire to be the type of person who not only has a favorite liverwort, but is so well-known for having a favorite liverwort that other people tag me in random people's observations of them

[id: a screenshot of an inaturalist identification thread in which user mrostrowski adds the identification of Rustwort (Nowellia curvofolia) followed by a comment from the same user tagging user rynxs which reads "Your favorite". End id]

I just don’t get it. How can our society act so goddamned normal about seahorses. How can anybody so casually accept that that’s a fish???

image

This is one of nature’s most anatomically perverse of all beasts. A FISH, like a carp or a bass or a beta is a fish, but it bent its body straight up only to bend its head permanently back down. It stretched its skull into a pipe. It tapered its tail like a lizard, specifically like a chameleon. It can also move its eyes independently by the way, you know, like a chameleon. Fun fact, it can change color to express its mood, like you know whatever does that. It doesn’t properly swim anymore. It buzzes its few remaining fins like an insect’s wings to float itself around at a snail’s pace. It lives its whole life clinging to coral branches or seaweed, which means it decided to become a “tree dweller” in an environment where gravity didn’t even matter anyway. The males get pregnant. They make noises at each other by rubbing some of their neck bones together. Every day, EVERY DAY a mated pair does a little dance and a little neck bone song so they remember which two seahorses they were. They’re a beautiful precious obscenity. Nothing so adorable ever made such a strong case against a logical creator.

They have as little skin and meat as they could get away with. Their skeleton is almost all they are.

No one can bring up bugs in any positive context without some motherfucker informing everyone that they’re allergic to bees and once nearly died from a brown recluse spider and their brother woke up one morning as a giant cockroach and became a real burden to the family ever since he stopped being able to work.

King Arthur Flour is getting boycotted—after conservatives discover it has a baking program for people of color
The Daily Dot
King Arthur Baking Company is coming under fire for holding a competition exclusively for people of color-owned businesses and brands.

According to the company’s website, “Baking Pitchfest 2024” offers a product edition geared toward baking brands founded and owned by people of color across the U.S., and a bakery edition, which focuses on people of color-owned bakeries in the Northeast and Washington state. “Half mentorship, half competition, Baking Pitchfest is an accelerator program designed to foster greater inclusivity and creativity in the baking world by providing equitable opportunities for People of Color entrepreneurs,” the website states, adding that winners will receive financial support, mentorship, and exposure. But the initiative has generated outrage amongst conservatives online, who have blasted the competition eligibility rules as discriminatory against white people.

One X user critical of King Arthur Baking’s contest posted an email she received from the company in response to her complaining. “Helping build joyful, equitable communities that celebrate diversity is an important part of who we are as a company,” the email states, later adding: “We love baking with anyone and everyone. Our simple expectation is that everyone show respect for one another.”

Poison control is also important for getting treatment for a venomous snake bite! Because they're so uncommon in the US, many doctors are not comfortable using antivenins or will attempt to treat bites with outdated, unsafe techniques. So, if you get bit by something venomous, the best thing to do is call poison control while you are en route to the hospital, and they can actually contact the ER doctor and give guidance on the appropriate treatments, dosage of antivenin, etc AND let you know where the nearest hospital or zoo that has a stock of the correct antivenin is.

Life-changing OCD hack is learning that you can literally call poison control to check if you fucked up and took medications wrong in a way that could kill you instead of having a panic attack while reading reddit and quora threads for an hour. They won't even be mad at you. Like obviously don't do it every day or something but genuinely you can do this if you need to
