I appreciate you taking the time to explain your side—it’s way more thought-out than a lot of the discourse floating around, and I respect that. I think a lot of what you’re saying boils down to the difference between how people approach canon, and how they approach interpretation—and where those two things collide, especially in a fandom as big and heated as MHA’s.

You’re absolutely right that Horikoshi has only explicitly confirmed a few LGBT characters, and yeah, that matters—especially in a country like Japan where representation is still a sensitive topic. Canon is canon. But I think where we diverge is in how we treat what’s not canon. People using headcanons or reading queer subtext into character dynamics isn’t the same as claiming canon, even if fandom excitement sometimes blurs that line.

Interpretation has always been part of fandom culture—especially for marginalized fans who never got to see themselves in canon growing up. So when people say they see queer dynamics in bkdk, it’s not necessarily them rejecting canon; it’s them engaging with the story in a personal way. The emotional depth, the tension, the growth between Bakugo and Midoriya is intense—and people connect to that. Not everyone sees it as romantic, and that’s fine, but people who do aren’t delusional or disrespecting Horikoshi by doing so.

That said, the harassment you described? Completely unacceptable. No one should be told to kill themselves over a ship. That’s not “passion,” that’s toxicity—and it happens across all corners of fandom, even if you’ve mostly seen it from bkdk fans. I’ve seen plenty of ugly behavior come from other ship groups too, and I don’t think any one fandom owns toxicity. But if you were genuinely harassed like that? I’m sorry that happened to you, and you absolutely deserve to feel safe expressing your interpretations just like anyone else.

But the flip side is that queer fans also face harassment just for shipping a gay couple or reading queerness into a story. They’re not always attacking—they’re often defending. There are plenty of people who use “it’s just a headcanon” as a shield for saying really homophobic stuff. That’s why some bkdk fans are on edge. It’s not about labeling every disagreement as homophobic, but rather about patterns: dismissing queer readings while fully embracing weaker straight ones, mocking queer headcanons, or calling people delusional for something that’s been a part of fandom culture forever.

And while I get that queer coding can be complicated and sometimes rely on stereotypes, it’s also historically how queer people were allowed to exist in media for decades. It’s valid to be wary of that, but it’s also valid to explore it—especially when the subtext is there, whether intentional or not.

Finally, on the “let people ship” thing—I meant that literally. People should be able to engage with stories however they want, whether that’s canon-faithful, headcanon-heavy, romantic, platonic, or anything in between, so long as they’re not harming others. That includes you wanting to see bkdk as brotherly. That’s 100% valid. The problem is when either side starts treating the other like they’re ruining the story for everyone else just for seeing something differently.

So yeah—thanks for explaining your side. This kind of respectful convo is rare in fandom spaces, and I hope more people can have these discussions without turning it into a warzone.

Why is it so scary seeing that one of your communities was updated or like someone posted smth but when you go on there your PRAYING it’s not p0rn bots bruh

The amount of times I’ve been fucking flashed is absurd like- why are you making eye contact with the camera while your pulling a hawk tuah?!!

I’m having a breakdown. So the back cover of volume 37 is out, and by now we’ve all heard the preliminary translations of Edgeshot’s spiel to Kacchan.

But we didn’t have the images! Now we do, and I have Observations. Please note that I have used a combo of Google image translate and Japanese language websites for this. I don’t read Japanese but I’m fascinated by language and can’t help analysing it.

Firstly, I just want to comment on how bloody romantic the last line is, “Connect yourself to your future where you dreamed of your ideal”, considering he does exactly that, and thinks only of Izuku.

Gorgeous, beautiful, fantastic work Edgeshot! It also really reminded me of Jeanist’s line to him about his hero name being a representation of his ideal self. These Heroes care about him so much 😭😭😭.

BUT, but but but, the part I really want to talk about is “Omae ga matsu kare wa… Deku wa kanarazu kuru!”

Omae: very informal ‘you’. Edgeshot is literally inside him so I think he’s allowed to be casual.

Matsu: Wait or look forward to

Kare wa: ‘He is’ or ‘boyfriend is’ (bear with me)

Kanarazu: Without a doubt

Kuru: Come or arrive

The sentence is very deliberate in the way Edgeshot says “He is… Deku is definitely coming.” So, what’s interesting about that? I WILL TELL YOU.

In Japanese it’s unusual to use pronouns, which is why you hear Deku saying ‘Kacchan’ directly to Kacchan all the blinking time. If it’s obvious who you’re talking by about via the context, then they don’t say he/she/they/you if possible. Here, have some evidence from translation websites and Japanese speakers:

So we already know Edgeshot is being extremely casual from his use of ‘omae’, and ‘kare’ is a casual term for boyfriend. It is unusual for him to unnecessarily use a pronoun that could also be interpreted as a reference to Deku as his boyfriend, no? He could have very easily just said “Deku is definitely coming!” without adding that ambiguity, But He Did Not.

I just think it’s interesting. And I do believe I will be thinking about this for the rest of the manga.

BONES AMPING UP BKDK WHATS GOING ON?

“He hurt the PERSON I love (daisuki) the MOST” and it’s a flashback of Katsuki sacrificing himself… Gentle and La Brava being here also makes this even more sus. It’s similar in the manga but anime made it sound like a literal confession.

I know the subtitles and English translation in the manga say “people near and dear to me” but that’s not how Izuku says it. He uses the word DAISUKI.

Hito is singular but can also be used for plural. The fact Izuku said “he killed a lot of people” and then when it switches to Katsuki it says “he hurt the person/people I LOVE the most” and he used a very intimate “Daisuki” it’s safe to assume that doesn’t apply to Endeavor.

The manga also hints to this because the “he hurt the people I love the most” is a speech bubble placed right across KATSUKI. I talked about this many times before. Anime is trying to make things extra obvious this season so they NEED TO KNOW THINGS!

I think because anime is still behind, Hori MAY have told them to amp bkdk up this season cause the mange will end soon so if anime onlys hear bkdk became canon they’ll be confused and cause a riot much like how certain other anime fans did.

This is a really common argument, but it’s also kind of shallow when you actually think about it. Horikoshi making queerness “obvious” with characters like Magne or Tiger doesn’t mean that every queer character has to be labeled or confirmed in the same way—especially in a shounen series that’s always walked a careful line around anything not explicitly straight. Queer coding, subtext, and emotional dynamics do exist, and they’ve always been part of how queer fans engage with media that doesn’t make it easy to see themselves in canon.

And like—saying Izuku is “clearly” into women because he blushes around Uraraka is kind of proving the point. That’s literally the bare minimum for a straight ship to be valid: one or two awkward blushes and boom, no questions asked. But when a queer-coded bond like bkdk is built over years of growth, rivalry, trauma, mutual respect, emotional vulnerability, and physical sacrifice… people say “they’re just friends” and act like it’s crazy to interpret it any other way. That’s the double standard folks are tired of.

Also, blaming “insufferable fans” for the hate doesn’t hold much weight when every popular ship has a loud side of the fandom—including Izuocha, Tododeku, and Kacchako.

As for the “never said I hated them” line—you don’t have to. The way you dismiss valid queer readings, brush off the ship as having no basis because it’s not on a character sheet, and reduce fan excitement to “insufferable behavior” kinda speaks for itself.

Let people have fun. Let people ship. And if you really believe their friendship is “superior,” maybe stop trying so hard to convince others that any deeper interpretation is invalid or laughable.
