dude the drizzle is gorgeous! I'm also so impressed with the piping!
Inspired by the latest chapter of Parallel Lines by @hypnotisedfireflies, and also @elpickett's cake, I made a honey cake today. It's delicious, and next time I make it I will find a way to cram even more honey into it. Also, I'm really proud of how it looks! My cake decorating can usually be described as 'functional' at best 😂
Excellent - mine came out denser than expected but I'm worried my self raising flour isnt actually self raising. My partner is going to have to eat plenty of honey cake I guess
this evening's activity has been making a honey cake inspired by the latest chapter of @hypnotisedfireflies story, where Joel and Tess try wedding cake flavours. I read it this morning, finished my classes, and dragged my partner to the shops on the way home for ingredients.
cake notes: somehow needs more honey, despite having almost 400g of honey in the cake you see above. this may be because I didn't use the really nice honey, but that is like £10 a jar and I don't have the budget to recipe test with that. recipe testing is also potentially a generous statement here given I just winged it. and then had to go to the shops again because I forgot icing sugar the first time. oops.

one of the most important lesson I teach to all the kids I tutor is to work out *why* they got a question wrong, because the reason means how we deal with it is completely different.
got it wrong because you didn't know how to do it? cool, let me teach you this method!
got it wrong because you didn't understand what the question was asking? cool, let's go through how to read exam questions and figure out exactly what they want.
got it wrong because you didn't check for arithmetic errors, or you didn't catch them? cool, let's go through how to check your work correctly.
and it really annoys them sometimes, because they want to just move on, but when they start doing this our seasons move so much faster, because if they got something wrong they can tell me why and we can fix it rather than me trying to figure it out. yeah, it takes a while, but asking why mistakes are made is really important!
one of the most annoying things about corporate culture is that everything needs a "solution". if one person makes the smallest mistake we gather like 12 people in a room and talk about our "plan to make sure this doesn't happen again". a plan?? someone set a support ticket status wrong and we need a plan? ok here is my plan, we remind them what the correct status is and we immediately move on. but no we have to be """solutions-focused""". ridiculous. its for managers who have nothing to do all day and need to justify their 200k a year salary. how about you FOCUS on leaving my team alone buddy.
the spider in my parents garage: friend shaped. delightful. huge, to be clear, probably the largest native british spider I've ever seen, but proportioned in a friendly and charming way
the spider in their bloody shower: evil. cursed. why is it like that. somehow too many legs??? (still eight legs)
yes insects can be friend shaped or not friend shaped the same way snakes can be
i would like to say an apology to the poor pedestrian who walked by my yard just in time to hear me say "oh you are NOT friend shaped"
i can assure you that i was only speaking to the absolute unit of a fuck off bug that was menacing me while i was innocently trying to inspect my zucchini
So I think I figured out what Fifteen's problem is. Not as a flaw in the writing, mind. A flaw in the character.
Every New Who Doctor has been a reaction to the trauma of the Time War.
Nine raged
Ten ran
Eleven repressed
Twelve wallowed
Thirteen regressed
Fourteen finally admitted he had a problem and sought help.
And Fifteen, I'm certain now, relapses.
Fifteen started out doing great. All his trauma processed. Ready to face the world. And maybe at first it worked (though sadly we didn't get to see his many offscreen adventures with Ruby). But like... you don't stay better. You have to work at it. And he's very much not doing that.
There's a brittleness to his good cheer. Be it the gods of chaos, the loss of a lover, or his first real confrontation with racism, he doesn't deal with adversity very well. He breaks down, he hides, he acts like everything's fine. It's not fine though. He's not okay. He might've dealt with his problems, but he didn't equip himself with the tools needed to deal with new problems.
He's gonna crack eventually. We can already see it happening.

some of my faves recently!
for science, I second bobbybroccoli! Loads of very cool science videos
for (pre-)history: Dan Davis History (amazing, fairly European focused as that's his specialty), Stefan Milo (more science-y side of archaeology, pretty gloabl), and Milo Rossi, for American (including lots of indigenous) history and pseudoscience
for religion/history, esoterica is great. I don't have the background to even begin to understand some of the videos, but those I can get into are incredible, it's a channel devoted to non-dogmatic early abrahamic religious history (think origins of the abrahamic god, the two part (so far) series on Yahweh is awesome). Presents detailed academic research in an approachable way, and I really like the religious history without the trappings of religious dogma as part of it.
some other faves;
for tv analysis, Harbo Wholmes is amazing for doctor who analysis (and is doing an episode by episode analysis for the current season)
for philosophy, philosophytube is great and generally well explained
hi do you have long video essay recommendations
sure, ill give you some channels
but: they wont be anyone you havent heard of before, only some of them make truly long content, many will cover different topics, and i cannot necessarily attest to the true quality of all of the content or the creators- i tend to put on long videos to work to, and dont pay particularly close attention to them. these are really just people that pop up in my recommended often
im not ever on an active hunt for niche creators on youtube. maybe i should be
green means i like this persons work particularity. like i actually pay attention when its on

i also recommend old episodes of Unsolved Mysteries or even some of the stuff History Channel uploads (old eps of Ancient Aliens and whatnot) if youre just looking for some background noise. fair warning for those, though, in that theyre both old and sensational by nature. im sure you know that, but i wouldnt sleep right if i didnt offer the disclaimer
ill add more channels if i can find or think of any
i found a post once with some good specific videos linked on it, ill see if i cant find it again for you
look Kristen mostly tamped down the chaos this season, but she is also exactly the type of person to go running back to her ex on almost no information
it was nevertheless a dick move towards Gertie who did nothing wrong, and I'm very down for Gertie to get some sort of revenge (of the catty high school variety)
i’m on team gertie. how DARE kristen ditch her for her weird ex after making out with her and making it seem like they were gonna have a thing. get her ass gertie!
here's the thing I generally love living in a coastal city, the Mediterranean is gorgeous
HOWEVER sometimes we get weeks of humidity and it's actually awful, especially as we don't have ac :( the trams in particular are... unpleasant
for WHY must it be warm and humid outside
i feel fucking STICKY
dude the art is gorgeous!!!!! congrats
also I feel we as a fandom do periodically need to remember that Gabriel is one of us in spirit (I was going to say even if he's not here but we have no proof of that).
Brb screaming
I really agree with the point made in the comments / reblogs about the fact that people are pissed because they can't sexualise Ellie any more because Bella looks as young as she actually is, and doesn't fit their ideals of what women should look like, and it just highlights to me one of the biggest differences between uk and USA TV: the us, especially when it comes to network shows, prioritise the women looking gorgeous to an unreal extent. It doesn't matter what the show is or is about, it doesn't matter how irrelevant a characters looks are, the actresses always have to be unrealistically pretty. And this just isn't a thing that exists in the UK the same way - the BBC has a bunch of shows about middle aged or older women, and there just isn't the same level of 'these women must look sexy'. It's super interesting to me because the shows I like that come out of the us tend to follow the UK way much more, like in the last of us. The women aren't expected to be pretty because it's the fucking apocalypse, and they have bigger priorities.
also Bella is great and I will fight anyone who says mean things
If I see one more Bella Ramsey hate post I’m going to riot.
BeLlA dOeSnT eVeN lOoK lIkE eLlIe.
Man fuck. Off.
Tbh they genuinely do in my opinion but besides all of that. Bella’s acting is insane they did that part so unbelievably well. It’s funny that out of all the cast ( in which a few are notably not like their game counterparts) Bella is the only one people bring up CONSTANTLY
just grow up my god
Steven Moffat is great at writing one off episodes, and I'm so glad they brought him back for that. This episode was just chilling on so many levels, and felt like a really nice contrast to the previous two episodes which were much more light-hearted. I think in a lot of ways it reminded of episodes like the magicians apprentice or the doctors daughter, with people fighting for no reason at all while being so convinced they are right, and it felt really good to see ncuti acting in those types of scenes.
Steven Moffat coming back to Doctor Who after years away just to go after capitalism, organized religion as a cover for violence, the military industrial complex, AI, and “thoughts and prayers” in 46 minutes.

i'm conducting an experiment. everyone who's from an english speaking country state your country, regional area and what you call the following images. i need to see something
no but we should
given they were the only people not yet involved in the parentcule, but definitely will be considering jawbone and Sandra Lynn have hopefully worked out their shit and would potentially be open to that
consider: no inter-friend group dating not just because they are all friends and don't see each other like that, but also because all the bad kids are now at least tangentially related
have we as a fandom considered what the thistlesprings canonically being swingers/having a sexually open relationship could do to the parentcule?
I went on a walking tour in Granada today and it ended up being just my partner and I and the tour guide (paying 40€ for a private tour instead of 200€? an absolute win), who was a) our age and b) even more of a history nerd than me. What followed was two hours of intense history learning (as I kept asking questions) and it was an absolutely delightful time of two history nerds nerding out, and my partner being excited to learn as well but just being amused. be! supportive! of! other! people's! interests! it's more fun for everyone
no offense but if someone is excited about something and you make them feel stupid for being excited about it you are the worse type of person
Wanda Childa is an entirely separate character to Figueroth Faeth at this point. She's not just a trick to get information from Ruben, she's a whole persona. A secret identity. I'm obsessed
Paul: 'im not the Messiah!'
Stilgar: 'that sounds like something the Messiah would say!'
I remember books beginning to come out with queer characters, and that being a big deal, and the author taking risks. I'm in my twenties, and the change I've seen between my childhood and my younger sister's in terms of diversity and inclusion in the media is monumental, to an extent I don't think we often appreciate enough.
One thing that's likely not visible to all younger queers is that little kids shows have gotten radically queerer in the last 10 years.
I'm not just talking about Owl House, Kippo etc, much as I love them.
I mean like stuff for kindergardners.
Characters in Strawberry Shortcake and Superhero Girls and more have gay parents just unremarkably in the background. That was unthinkable 15 years ago.
But the thing that shocks me utterly is the casual inclusion of nonbinary characters.
Dee and Friends in Oz, Polly Pocket, Craig of the Creek...it seems like half the shows my daughter watches have nonbinary characters just seamlessly included. Not even a Very Special Episode. Just...here's the scarecrow in charge of scarecrow village who uses they/them pronouns that everyone just uses without comment.
I was almost 30 before I found the word nonbinary. For my kid to just grow up with this is astonishing.
Conservatives are so mad because it's INCREDIBLY hard to just put this kind of inclusion back away. Once something is normal, and clearly not causing anything bad to happen, it's hard to convince people to be scared of it.
okay I've never seen this show so I can say nothing about the characters but like... that lace is ripping me right out of the historical period it is so obviously completely modern and machine made and polyester WHY MUST YOU DO THIS!!!! quit it!!!! pay for proper lace making!!!
"The Buccaneers" Wedding of the Season (TV Episode 2023)
