i haven’t seen any posts about this going around on tumblr yet, and i know theres a lot going on around the world but this is an issue that needs (and has always needed) more coverage tbqh.
Kylie Jenner has recently been under fire for her clothing line in collaboration with Kendall Jenner, Kendall + Kylie, refusing to pay Bangladeshi apparel workers making their products. the company is owned by Global Brands Group, which has decided not to pay the workers due to the lack of sales during the pandemic. people started speaking up about the payment issue on Kylie’s instagram, but instead of a proper response comments were being deleted and eventually limited.
however, the issue doesn’t begin and end with Kendall + Kylie, the treatment of factory workers in Bangladesh is a problem with a long overdue response. most of these people are women working in gruelling conditions, being paid in dust and recieving little to no benefits. their lives are seen as disposable. during the quarantine, factories continued production but laid off a quarter of the workforce while the rest still face the threat of wage cuts and lack of access to healthcare.
all the fast fashion we consume like Gap, Primark, Forever 21 and C&A comes at the cost of labour exploitation in developing countries like Bangladesh. this is the country where the main source of income is textiles, where the 2013 Rana Plaza incident killed 1,100 factory workers alone, where workers constantly protest for better salaries and safer conditions, and yet they recieve not even an ounce of dignity for their hard labour. change needs to happen, better sooner than later. will reblog with what you can do to help (since tumblr hates posts with links).

Most of the “keep up the work after the protests have ended!”-type posts I’ve seen are mostly focused on like, reading Black authors and listening to Black voices and unlearning racism, and obviously all of that is absolutely vital - but no amount of individual self-reflection will be able to dismantle institutional systems of oppression. So I wanted to put together some resources for continuing to build a culture of noncompliance and resistance to the police and prison system even after things have calmed down
Know your rights. Giving the police any more information than you absolutely have to will never and can never benefit you or anyone else - positive evidence given to the police is regularly thrown out in court, whereas negative evidence will be used against you. Know what to say and what you have the right to refuse. You don’t have to answer any questions without a lawyer present, you don’t have to give the police access to your house or car unless they have a current warrant signed by a judge. They will try to intimidate you - learn your rights and don’t let up, don’t ever cooperate with the police
Don’t snitch. If you see someone breaking the law in a way that doesn’t hurt anybody, keep your mouth shut. If cops knock on your door asking you questions about your neighbors or anyone you know, don’t answer
Don’t call the cops. If you can solve the problem in a different way, do it. Cops have on multiple occasions murdered the people they were called to help (or bystanders) without provocation. Don’t be complicit in that. Learn how to handle situations as a community or with the help of qualified experts
When you see an interaction with the police happening, stop and observe. If necessary, film the interaction. Organize and work with groups such as Copwatch to observe the police and hold them accountable
Use proper opsec, especially if you’re involved with anything that might make you a target for the cops. Downloading Signal is a great simple place to start
Learn about jury nullification, and spread the word. When serving in a jury, you have the right to vote not guilty on a defendant that you believe did commit the crime but doesn’t deserve punishment for it. Don’t be complicit in unjust punishment
Refuse to do work for the police or prison system. Workers keep the world running and the state relies on our compliance to keep our neighbors under their thumb. We can shut it down
Continue to support bail funds, even for non-protesters. Cash bail is unjust, and people shouldn’t be in jail just because they can’t pay
Continue to support legal defense funds as well, such as that of the National Lawyers Guild
Write to prisoners, either by yourself or with groups such as the Anarchist Black Cross or Black And Pink, and organize/support books to prisons programs, commissary funds, reentry programs, and other forms of prisoner support
Organize and support community-run crisis response organizations like the CAHOOTS program in Eugene, Oregon or the Birmingham Peacemakers in my hometown
Here are some other organizations to join that are doing good work in this area:
Black Lives Matter is obviously a huge voice in racial justice right now. The list of “official” chapters on their website is very incomplete, though, so you may have better luck doing a web search for “[your area] black lives matter” (beware of fakes though)
Showing Up for Racial Justice is another very active and widespread racial justice network
Critical Resistance is a grassroots prison abolitionist organization founded by Angela Davis
The Revolutionary Abolitionist Movement is another active prison abolitionist organization
The IWW’s Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee works with prisoners to organize strikes, phone zaps, and other actions combating injustice in prisons
Again, the Anarchist Black Cross does great work supporting political prisoners through letter-writing and more. The link I’ve been including is to an unofficial federation of ABC groups, though - there may be a group in your area that’s not part of that federation, so a web search for “[your area] black cross” may be better
Black And Pink is a prison abolitionist organization focused on queer people and people living with HIV/AIDS
Antifascism is of course an important aspect of racial justice and community safety. See @antifainternational‘s guide to getting connected to your local antifascists - though, again, beware of fakes (the “antifa checker” accounts on fedbook and twitter can help)
The police state and prison industrial complex rely on the complicity and cooperation of all of us to function and be effective. By building a culture of noncompliance and active resistance, we can drastically reduce the state’s ability to oppress communities of color. Don’t let the struggle be forgotten with the changing of the news cycle - keep up the struggle until all are free!
Listen I love Harry Potter you all know that I sold my soul to those books a long time ago so listen to me when I say that y'all need to stop defending the canonical actions of Slytherin House Stop it with these reaches of the century about how Slytherin “wasn’t founded on bigotry” and how “we don’t know if everyone in Slytherin in the books was a pureblood so how do we know they were all purists” and “they were traditionalists trying to preserve Wizard Culture uwu”
Slytherin House was founded by a man who wanted to exclude part of the wizarding community based on something they couldn’t control (heritage). I don’t care about his reasoning. He left a Murder Snake in a school knowing that his descendants would use it to kill all of the muggleborns in Hogwarts.
Yes. We know that not every Slytherin was Evil. Andromeda Black married a muggleborn. Regulus Black became one of the most important heroes in the series. Horace Slughorn is one of the best examples of a morally grey character. And there were probably others, but on the whole, the wizarding community saw Slytherin as the house of Voldemort and people who agreed with him. Regulus Black still joined the Death Eaters before he graduated Hogwarts and no one knew that Regulus worked to defeat Voldemort until almost 2 decades after his death. Andromeda was disowned after marrying Ted and her own sister wanted to brutally murder Nymphadora. Snape was much more accepted by Slytherin when Harry was at Hogwarts than Slughorn was. Why? Maybe it was because he played favorites. Maybe it was because he had been a Death Eater.
And yes. We know for a fact that not everyone in Slytherin was a pureblood. Tom Marvolo Riddle had a muggle father and he was a Slytherin. If Lord Halfblood was a Slytherin and ended up creating a terrorist organization intent on committing genocide in the name of “finishing Salazar Slytherin’s noble work” then perhaps he wasn’t the only one. Also you have to consider that during and after Voldemort’s rise to power (which according to the first chapter in the whole series was 11 years before his downfall) the fact that Blood Purist #1 was the heir of Slytherin had to influence people’s wishes when they were being sorted. Kids who didn’t want to be associated with Slytherin for some reason or another (Sirius, Harry) were sorted elsewhere Whereas anyone who had clear and mostly positive ties to Slytherin and wanted to be with like minded individuals (the Malfoys, Snape- another halfblood) were sorted accordingly When a group of people all agree with each other they tend to become more radicalized because there’s no one to counter the group’s single-mindedness So in the time between Voldemort’s first rise and Harry’s first year there had already been 20 years worth of sorting the like-minded (i.e. blatantly bigoted) kids together and sorting anyone who disagreed elsewhere 20 years worth of internal radicalization before Harry even got to Hogwarts But sure Slytherin wasn’t labeled as the purist house at Hogwarts
I saw someone compare Canon Slytherins to the American Conservatives and I couldn’t believe it when some people literally started using Republican jargon to defend canon Slytherin values “They were traditionalists trying to preserve wizard culture from outsiders!!” What?! Do you realize what you’re saying?!? “We need to protect our country from outsiders!” “Protect traditional marriage!” “We can’t let them in here!” Guys the kids in Slytherin House were a lot like the young republicans of today and if you can’t see that then maybe it’s time to reread the series
Anyway I get it You’re sick and tired of being labeled as The Bad Guys But consider: defending the actions of bad people doesn’t stop them from being bad people It just means you’re defending bad actions In the series, Slytherin House was full of radicalized elitists who spouted bigoted ideas. Many of whom joined a genocidal terrorist group before even graduating. But just because it was that way in the books doesn’t mean all of you who identify as Slytherins are bigoted elitists You’re a Slytherin because you value ambition and cunning and resourcefulness (and the color green)
It’s great that you’re a Slytherin But that doesn’t mean you have to defend everything Slytherins did
I AM SO SORRY! But I thought that for some of you fanfiction writers here who write Geraskier stuff (and other ship fics, like Geralt and Yen! I respect all ships! ^^) those things might be useful or that they can be just fun in general for some people. Here is a bunch of canon things that I like but don’t often see in fics! Some of those will be totally innocent, but some are slightly more spicy (trying hard to not use any word that tumblr might not like).
But first a disclaimer! I am not sharing this to bash any fanfic writers for not being canon-friendly enough or to make anyone feel worse about their lore knowlage! You are an amazing fan, no matter if your knowlage is based on books, games, series or all of those! I am not an expert myself, I just randomly remembered some stuff so I thought I might share them. And fanfiction should be fun, it is about what you want to explore no matter if it’s canon or not! You do you! ^^ I just think some of those things might be fun to point out! So here we go:
Geralt:
- Witchers can’t blush – it’s due to blood system mutation.
- Geralt can’t get hard for some time after using his potions – Yennefer was able to get him “ready” in this kind of situation only by using a spell.
- Geralt is NOT an aggressive lover – while the scenes in the book are not really explicit, from reading them you can still see very clearly that Geralt is careful and gentle in bed. I am not saying that he can’t go rough if his lover wants that, because I am sure he can do it very well, but he definitely is not brutal. He cares about his partners, even if they don’t really know each other. He is also well aware that the way you act in bed affects your partner’s comfort.
- Women don’t find Geralt repulsive – while many people fear Geralt or find him disgusting, many women also find him extremely attractive. Some find him way more attractive than other men around them. He never has any troubles with finding someone to spend a night with him. In many cases those women are the ones suggesting something more. In the books there is even a scene where two women are thirsting over him, talking about what they would do with him and when he hears this, he is the one being uncomfortable.
Jaskier:
- Jaskier means “buttercup” - which is a very small yellow flower popular in Polish meadows and often growing close to roads.
- He looks about 10 years younger than he actually is - someone points out that he is nearly 40 but looks nearly 30.
- Jaskier was sometimes mistaken for an elf when he had his hair longer.
- He is really scared of pain – while he can be very brave while he travels with Geralt and he can be badass af, he is also a big drama queen when the smallest things happen to him. He is not really experienced with being injured so he overreacts. And despite being very proud, he can ask for mercy when he is afraid and helpless.
Yennefer:
- She can be very loud in bed – she is not ashamed of it and she thinks it’s actually healthy to let everything out.
- After l o v e m a k i n g (I am really trying to not use the s-word XD) with Geralt she would often say “o jejku jej” or just “jejku jej” in Polish version – I couldn’t find how it was translated to English, but I would roughly translate it to “oh my my”.
- She is able to draw a bath with her magic - and she does that often.
I will update this list when I remember more things that have fanfic potential and please you do it too! :3
Tip:
When it comes to stuff like racism, sexism, homophobia, etc, I’ve found it’s usually way better to think to yourself ‘I don’t want to be’ than ‘I’m not’.
I.e. if someone goes ‘that thing you just did is ableist’, instead of going ‘I’m not ableist, I don’t hate disabled people!’ it’s usually a lot better to go ‘I don’t want to be ableist, I should rethink what I’m doing/saying/etc in light of that fact’. Because that shifts your thinking so rather than jumping straight into denial and attempts to defend your character, you’re instead more inclined to look at how your actions could be misrepresenting your intentions. Or whether you’ve overlooked something, been callous, or acted in ignorance.
Me: “Welcome! May I offer you a free mask?”
Visitor: [looks around incredulously] “But why? There’s no one else here.”
Me: “...well...there’s me?”
Visitor: [laughs] “You don’t have anything to worry about.”
SHUKRI ABDI 2007 - 2019 (12 years old) Manchester, England, United Kingdom
‘If you don’t get into the water, I’m going to kill you.’
Shukri Abdi was a 12 year old Somalian girl who was born and brought up in a refugee camp in Kenya having escaped conflict in Somalia. She arrived in the UK in 2017 and experienced horrific bullying from her classmates who called her ‘coloured’ and ‘half-caste’.
In 2017 her body was found in the River Irwell, when police arrived children were still laughing as Shukri drowned. Greater Manchester police quickly declared the incident an accident.
“Child Four said that Shukri seemed untroubled in the deeper water when she had her arm on Child One’s shoulder, but appeared to get into difficulties when Child One let go of her and swam back to the other children.”
“Then Shukri’s head went under and came back up. I think she was trying to say something but she couldn’t, trying to call out but she couldn’t,” Child Four told the court.
Child Four was asked by the court if Child One was laughing when they could see Shukri struggling and sumberging beneath the surface.
Child Four replied “Yes” and said they presumed it was because they thought Shukri was joking about drowning, but Child Four said they could see Shukri wasn’t joking. Child Four jumped in the water to try to save Shukri. Child Three ran to get a stick to try to pull Shukri out.
“Child One was laughing for a couple of minutes,” Child Four told the inquest. “Child One was still laughing when me and Child Three were trying to help. Child One was still laughing when I jumped in.”
Child Four said that neither Child One nor Child Two were doing anything while Shukri was drowning, and that Child One only stopped laughing when the police came.
After jumping into the water to try to save Shukri, Child Four realised they would not be able to save her, so ran to the nearby Bury police station to alert them. Child Three did the same.
Child Four said that Child Three blamed Child One for the tragedy “because they let go of Shukri”.
- The Guardian
It is claimed by the other children CH1 said ‘If you don’t get into the water, I’m going to kill you’ to Shukri before the incident. This was intentional and not an accident. Shukri, her poor mother and dear siblings deserve justice. They came to this country thinking they were going to be safe. Manchester claims to be open and honest and loving and yet a vulnerable child has died in their city. You need to be screaming for Justice. Inquests are not enough and not fast enough, not for Shukri, not for her mother. Justice.
