my least favorite aspect of the “slytherins are oppressed uwu” thing that keeps happening is when people try to say that J.K. Rowling has “anti-slytherin bias” because she shows the school-age slytherins as all being snobbish and 100% deserving of the reputation they have
like you guys know hogwarts is not a real place, right? there isn’t actually any such thing as slytherin.
Jo Rowling is not a journalist who failed to report the story objectively because she has a personal vendetta against slytherin house borne of pervasive anti-slytherin prejudices in our society
She’s an author who made up slytherin and decided that the majority of them would be exactly as big of dicks as everyone thinks they are. Rowling literally can’t be anything but objective with regards to Harry Potter canon. She’s literally omniscient in the world she created, and if she wrote Slytherin house as being just full of dicks, even the 11-year-olds who are sorted into it (of their own free will, you can’t be officially sorted into a house you don’t want to be in, the first year slytherins wanted to be in slytherin and most of them, even muggleborns, know how much importance slytherin places on elitist snobbery in possible students)
If you think racist, classist, status-obsessed, snobbish slytherins are the exception rather than the rule, the problem isn’t that J.K. has an anti-slytherin bias, it’s that you have a pro-slytherin bias, and a bias in favor of the house that caters to both the privileged and supremacists by design is not a bias you should be proud of having
However, the thesis statement here is this is fake. You’re literally saying that a woman who pretended a whole planet of wizards for your entertainment is somehow wrong about how the world she made up operates. It’s like when the Supernatural writers said they spell Castiel’s nickname “Cass” and the fans said the writers were wrong. I agree that’s a dumb way to spell a shorter version of “Castiel.” Supernatural is a dumb show. However, if you find yourself saying that you, a fan, are more of an authority on canon than the literal writers who make up the canon for your consumption, you have overstepped your bounds as a member of the audience.
Have headcanons about nice, non-racist slytherins if you insist. Say the books would have been better if Harry’s slytherin classmates had been more three-dimensional, or if the series had explored the idea of students going to slytherin because they expected it to be the “ambitious” house and being mortified to find out they’re actually stuck in the racist house.
Please, though, put the “Rowling’s anti-slytherin bias” card back in the deck and leave it there forever, it doesn’t make sense and it shows me you think “the person who wrote the story told the series of events they made up inaccurately” makes more sense than “like the omniscient narrator and many of the characters said, there’s a problem is slytherin house.”
tl;dr: harry potter is a good book but it’s made up so why are you trying to spare the feelings of pretend racists
controversial: dumbledore would’ve made the right decision taking the 1991-1992 house cup away from slytherin even if harry and co. hadn’t saved the school and stopped voldemort from returning to power
This whole “Salazar Slytherin wasn’t REALLY a bigot” post going around is like…very reaching, but okay, if you really want to defend the dude so badly. The dude who put a giant-ass killing snake in a school. which he definitely did, Voldemort would not have been able to raise a Basilisk in a few years.
there is a difference between slytherin in canon and identifying as a slytherin in real life!!! slytherin house, in canon, is built on bigoted ideals and upholds bigoted standards and while there are non bigoted slytherins, you can’t pretend that the house is unfairly hated by many because it literally was built on the idea of blood supremacy…. like salazar slytherin was literally like “yeah i only want to teach those with pure-blood” and there’s no way that didn’t lead to systemic bigotry in the house….. obviously in real life slytherins feel that they are slytherin because they think they’re cunning or ambitious or they like the color green i don’t care but criticizing slytherin in canon has nothing to do with people who call themselves slytherins in real life
Listen I love Harry Potter you all know that I sold my soul to those books a long time ago so listen to me when I say that y'all need to stop defending the canonical actions of Slytherin House Stop it with these reaches of the century about how Slytherin “wasn’t founded on bigotry” and how “we don’t know if everyone in Slytherin in the books was a pureblood so how do we know they were all purists” and “they were traditionalists trying to preserve Wizard Culture uwu”
Slytherin House was founded by a man who wanted to exclude part of the wizarding community based on something they couldn’t control (heritage). I don’t care about his reasoning. He left a Murder Snake in a school knowing that his descendants would use it to kill all of the muggleborns in Hogwarts.
Yes. We know that not every Slytherin was Evil. Andromeda Black married a muggleborn. Regulus Black became one of the most important heroes in the series. Horace Slughorn is one of the best examples of a morally grey character. And there were probably others, but on the whole, the wizarding community saw Slytherin as the house of Voldemort and people who agreed with him. Regulus Black still joined the Death Eaters before he graduated Hogwarts and no one knew that Regulus worked to defeat Voldemort until almost 2 decades after his death. Andromeda was disowned after marrying Ted and her own sister wanted to brutally murder Nymphadora. Snape was much more accepted by Slytherin when Harry was at Hogwarts than Slughorn was. Why? Maybe it was because he played favorites. Maybe it was because he had been a Death Eater.
And yes. We know for a fact that not everyone in Slytherin was a pureblood. Tom Marvolo Riddle had a muggle father and he was a Slytherin. If Lord Halfblood was a Slytherin and ended up creating a terrorist organization intent on committing genocide in the name of “finishing Salazar Slytherin’s noble work” then perhaps he wasn’t the only one. Also you have to consider that during and after Voldemort’s rise to power (which according to the first chapter in the whole series was 11 years before his downfall) the fact that Blood Purist #1 was the heir of Slytherin had to influence people’s wishes when they were being sorted. Kids who didn’t want to be associated with Slytherin for some reason or another (Sirius, Harry) were sorted elsewhere Whereas anyone who had clear and mostly positive ties to Slytherin and wanted to be with like minded individuals (the Malfoys, Snape- another halfblood) were sorted accordingly When a group of people all agree with each other they tend to become more radicalized because there’s no one to counter the group’s single-mindedness So in the time between Voldemort’s first rise and Harry’s first year there had already been 20 years worth of sorting the like-minded (i.e. blatantly bigoted) kids together and sorting anyone who disagreed elsewhere 20 years worth of internal radicalization before Harry even got to Hogwarts But sure Slytherin wasn’t labeled as the purist house at Hogwarts
I saw someone compare Canon Slytherins to the American Conservatives and I couldn’t believe it when some people literally started using Republican jargon to defend canon Slytherin values “They were traditionalists trying to preserve wizard culture from outsiders!!” What?! Do you realize what you’re saying?!? “We need to protect our country from outsiders!” “Protect traditional marriage!” “We can’t let them in here!” Guys the kids in Slytherin House were a lot like the young republicans of today and if you can’t see that then maybe it’s time to reread the series
Anyway I get it You’re sick and tired of being labeled as The Bad Guys But consider: defending the actions of bad people doesn’t stop them from being bad people It just means you’re defending bad actions In the series, Slytherin House was full of radicalized elitists who spouted bigoted ideas. Many of whom joined a genocidal terrorist group before even graduating. But just because it was that way in the books doesn’t mean all of you who identify as Slytherins are bigoted elitists You’re a Slytherin because you value ambition and cunning and resourcefulness (and the color green)
It’s great that you’re a Slytherin But that doesn’t mean you have to defend everything Slytherins did

I’m not gonna make December’s rent so I need to be out by November 30. I don’t have 2 months’ rent to avoid a broken lease but I do have one other option: if someone else takes over the lease then we’re all set.
876 sqft 1/1 with a “flex room” (den) that could easily become a second bedroom.
Security deposit has already been paid.
BIG bedroom with huge walk-in closet. Decent closet in flex room.
Garden tub. Single sink & big closet in bathroom with doors to hallway & bedroom.
Oven with electric range, microwave, fridge+freezer, pantry, deep double sink, top & bottom cabinets, great A/C + heat, ceiling lights & fans in each room, cathedral ceiling in living room.
All carpet except laminate entryway, kitchen, & bath.
Valet trash Sun-Thurs.
Gated parking, no assigned spots or fees.
Cable ready with fiber optic (services AT&T, Xfinity, possibly others).
Large-slat wood blinds, not those cheap flimsy metal ones.
Super close to the parking gate.
Management lives on premises. They’re awesome.
There’s an on-site gym for $20/mo; if you want that you’re on your own.
Pet friendly.
Full size W/D hookup in a laundry “room” on covered balcony.
Apartment being leased AS IS. I’ll take care of the cleanup, but it’s not gonna have brand new carpet. Apartment has NOT been smoked in, but (well-tended) cats have lived here, so I don’t recommend this for anyone with a cat allergy.
Website for online rent payment.
Rent is $975/mo.
Current lease is up in April. Renew or bail at that point, it’s up to you.
Here’s the floor plan (my unit is flipped horizontally from this image and there is no door from the hallway to flex room):

$50 application fee.
3 most recent pay stubs proving you GROSS at least 3x rent ($2925/mo, or $18.21/hr assuming 40 hrs/wk).
Ability to move in Dec 1st or ASAP.

Joint applications are fine.

Yes, I’m sure the person with a wheat allergy wanting to avoid putting wheat containing things near their eyeballs is truly the reason society is failing.
im still super fuckin salty that 2 of my instructors for my psych degree specifically mentioned not wearing makeup and feminine clothes as a sign of “deteriorating mental health.” specifically, that if a woman walks into your practice, and you’ve never seen her before, and she’s not wearing makeup or dressing up or shaving, then she’s going to be a “difficult case” and when she starts to do these things it’s a sign that therapy is progressing well.
especially since when i was at Rock Fucking Bottom ™ i was over-performing femininity as a) a way to dissociate from myself, my trauma, and the dysphoria i was experiencing and b) a last-ditch effort to get Approval, Validation, and Attention when i felt like i was unattractive and worthless. don’t let anyone tell you that “psychology used to have a misogyny problem and issues with pathologizing gender nonconformity, but it’s solved now because more women than men are earning psych degrees!!” because the problems are still very much there, they just change forms every couple of decades.
It’s a minor pet peeve, but it is everywhere today so errrr…. please keep in mind that “Rest in Peace”/RIP literally comes from a latin phrase and is a very very deeply Christian expression.
When talking about the departed, Jews say “may their memory be a blessing.”
So please, when talking about a dead person who is Jewish, try to keep in mind that RIP is a Christian phrase.

As California is being ravaged by deadly fires, let’s remember that over a third of California’s firefighters are incarcerated.
They’re out there now risking their lives, making 1% or less of nonincarcerated firefighters’ salaries, and then they can’t even serve as firefighters when they get out because of their past convictions.
Prison labor is slavery.

Hey Tumblr,
This past March, we made you aware of steps we took to take down an Internet Research Agency (IRA) disinformation campaign operating on Tumblr in the lead up to the 2016 U.S. elections. The IRA is a Russian state-sponsored group that attempts to influence global political sentiment using Tumblr and other platforms. Our efforts helped indict 13 people who worked for the IRA.
We said at the time that we would be on the lookout for additional evidence of fake Tumblr accounts affiliated with state-sponsored disinformation campaigns.
In the days leading up to November 6, 2018, we were provided information by law enforcement authorities, including a list of Tumblr accounts allegedly tied to the IRA. We immediately initiated our own independent investigation and we have now identified a total of 112 accounts that we believe to be IRA-affiliated. These accounts appear to be relics of past IRA activity. None of the blogs contained any content related to the 2018 midterm elections, and all of the blogs were dormant since the 2016 election cycle.
Although these blogs posed no threat to the 2018 elections, consistent with our promise in March, we:
Immediately terminated these accounts and removed the original posts;
Left reblogs of posts from these accounts in place for transparency purposes;
Are notifying you if you liked, reblogged, replied to, or followed one of the accounts; and
Have added the accounts to our public record of usernames linked to state-sponsored disinformation campaigns.
U.S. intelligence officials and law enforcement continue to warn that we will see attempts at foreign influence in the future. We remain committed to closely monitoring for signs of state-sponsored disinformation campaigns and will continue to review any information made available to us.
There are also things you can do to help stop the spread of disinformation and propaganda.
Be aware that people want to manipulate the conversation. Knowing that disinformation and propaganda accounts are out there makes it harder for them to operate. The News Literacy Project has this handy checklist for spotting their tricks.
Be skeptical of things you read. Disinformation campaigns work because they know people don’t fact check. Look for reliable sources, and double-check that the source really says the same thing as the post. You can also check Snopes and Politifact. Both are award-winning resources and usually have the latest viral claim fact-checked on the front page.
Correct the record. When you see people spreading misinformation—even unintentionally—politely say something in a reblog or reply. If it’s your friend, send them a message to let them know.
Most importantly, we’ll continue to keep our promise to be transparent with you.

Not my normal post, but please spread this around!! I live fairly close to the fires and I know that is bad and how frightened they are! I lost my house in a fire once and the experience was traumatic. So if you, or someone you know lives in the area of the Paradise, or Malibu fires, please do this or share it if you don’t!
