Sam/Vampirebuckley and Racism

So it has been recently brought to mine and other people's attention that a prominent 9-1-1 content creator was exposed on Twitter for racism. I want to be upfront and say that I have not personally seen these posts or Sam's supposed apology that they posted shortly before deactivating all of their social media accounts. I am not on Twitter (X), nor do I intend to use the platform ever again. If any of you have screenshots of these posts that you could send me, I would be happy to add them to this post so it is easily accessible to those who want to know what was said. Update: I received a message with screenshots of Sam's racist comments and response. I have added them to the bottom of this post with the n-word censored. The individual who sent me the photos also pointed out that Sam has a blue check on their account, meaning that they have paid money to have their content pushed on a platform owned by a known Nazi.

From what I understand, Sam made a tweet back in 2013 in which they used the n-word. This is racist and completely unacceptable. If there are any other racist tweets or posts that Sam has made, I am unaware of them but condemn them all the same.

I do believe very strongly in rehabilitation and that people can and do change, especially over the span of a decade. However, Sam's actions in response to this information coming to light are very telling and that they still have work to do. Words can only get you so far if your actions don't reflect what you say. Posting an apology (which, from what I hear, was poorly done, seemed insincere, and contained excuses for the past behavior, but please correct me if I am mistaken) and then swiftly deactivating their accounts shows an unwillingness to engage and listen to the hurt that they have caused to the Black community. It also makes their apology essentially meaningless if the people that it affects cannot even directly access and respond to what they had to say about their past actions.

I also want to address some comments that I have seen under other content creator's posts regarding this situation that pull attention away from or are expressing undo sympathy for Sam. Some of this is paraphrased, but I will do my best to accurately represent what has been said.

"It was so long ago, a person can change a lot in that time". Sam's comments happening a "long time ago" mean nothing when what was said has caused and continues to cause so much pain and suffering to an entire group of people based on their immutable characteristics. Yes, people can change, but that doesn't change the damage their actions cause. They should still be held accountable for their actions and be willing to listen if they genuinely care about these issues.

"Sam is already going through so much right now, I don't blame them for deactivating". No, we are not going to do this. You can feel bad that they are going through something shitty in their personal life, but that has nothing to do with the situation at hand. We are all going through our own personal struggles, whether we share them online or not. That does not excuse the way Sam reponded and ran away from the situation. If they needed a moment to be offline until they were in a better headspace to engage, they could have done that without deactivating their accounts.

"The timing of this being released seems suspicious [because its following them talking about their recent struggles with a breakup]/The person who exposed them was trying to kick them while they were down". There is literally nothing to suggest this is the case, and I find it very, very hard to believe that someone would hold onto this information about Sam and only reveal it once they were at a personal low point. I find it far more likely that this is a coincidence and nothing more. Either way, this should not pull attention away from the main point of concern here: Sam's racist actions.

I strongly encourage content creators in this community, especially those with sizeable audiences, to speak up and address this situation. I know a lot of us join and engage in fandom to have fun and to escape the horrors of the outside world, but the reality is that we live in a deeply racist, white supremacist society and fandom (and society at large) will never be free of that unless we start to actually acknowledge it.

I also want to encourage folks to be respectful and refrain from engaging in harassment, death threats, etc. towards this content creator and anyone speaking up about the situation. We can hold someone accountable and not fall into harmful behaviors ourselves. From what I understand, Sam is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns exclusively. Please be respectful of this. Misgendering and other forms of transphobia are not excusable just because the person it is directed at has engaged in other forms of bigotry.

The most important point that I want to make is this: If you are not Black, you do not get to accept an apology from Sam.

If there is anything that I have stated here that is inaccurate or false in any way, please let me know so I can correct it. Thank you.

The kind of posts I have seen on here since the last episode aired (and let’s be honest for a LONG while now) make wonder why some people still watch this show.

Like, if you hate the characters so much and every storyline that is being written, why bother watching? If it makes you so miserable, what’s the point?

There are so many fucked up things happening in this world, life is way too short to have a 60 minute procedural tv show make you feel so many negative emotions. It’s okay not to watch anymore if it no longer brings you joy.

911 season 8 episode 9 could alternatively be called “the buckley siblings being fucking crazy, but like, you kind of get it”

I went back and watched the Hen and Chim goodbye scene when Chim was leaving to find Maddie in s5 and the difference between that goodbye and the Buddie goodbye are making me insane.

Hen shows up after Chim is done packing the car up and offers to go with him.

They're both crying the whole time.

Hen is clearly sad to see Chim go, but is so supportive of him going. She isn't bringing any of her feelings about him leaving into it.

They hug goodbye without any awkward 'should we hug' moment.

Hen sadly watches Chim drive away, but there isn't a super long, lingering shot on her as she does.

Compared to the Buddie goodbye.

Buck helps Eddie pack up.

Buck finds Chris's favourite shirt that's he's been missing and tells Eddie to make sure Chris knows he found it (because he clearly doesn't want Chris to forget him either).

Eddie tells Buck he matters to him and he's going to miss him, but instead of getting tearful/emotional about it Buck still seems like he's trying to hide how he's feeling from Eddie.

Buck baked Eddie cookies to help him stay awake while he drives (because he saw how tired Eddie got after driving around all night looking for Maddie a few weeks prior).

The awkward little dance before they hug.

The way they both clung to each other during the hug and Buck buried his face in Eddie's neck was such a different vibe from the Chimney and Hen goodbye hug.

Buck tells him "You get out of here" when Eddie's leaving.

Eddie turns around to look at Buck as he's leaving, like the last look wasn't enough.

Eddie waving goodbye and looking at Buck in the mirror as he drove away.

Buck standing sadly in the middle of the street in the rain as Eddie drove away with the close up on his face felt tonally different than the Hen look while Chim drove away.

Their friendships have always felt different and been portrayed differently, not just in a 'they're different characters' way, but in a way that feels especially stark watching the goodbyes one right after the other. I don't have some grand observation, just that the vibes were so different even though they were both between two best friends saying goodbye for an indeterminate period of time.

Okay I have so many thoughts about that episode but chief among them is the amount of allusion we got to the relationships within the fire fam. The whole episode was dedicated to reminding us how interconnected they are and how deep those ties run. Like obviously there’s the couple dynamics of Chim and Maddie, Hen and Karen, Bobby and Athena, (and Buck and Eddie), but there was also the little reminders that Buck is Chimney’s brother in law (went home with him after the dinner), that Karen and Chimney are friends outside of Hen and have their own relationship (that actually predates him knowing Hen), that Eddie and Chim are friends (Eddie went running to him right away!). All to drive home that Maddie fought like hell to get back to her FAMILY and Chimney loves her so much that he wouldn’t let himself fully believe she had run away!!

All of this in the same episode we got “it’s not nothing” and “I hope you know you do matter to me” is CRAZY

eddie's heart is literally splitting into two before our eyes. like. buck never expected him to choose between him and chris. we know this. eddie knows this. it was eddie projecting those feelings onto buck. because buck is a priority to him. because he doesn't want to leave him. because he loves him. to the core. but he will leave. because he loves christopher more. and eddie doesn't feel bad about that. not about christopher coming first. nor should he. but he does feel bad about leaving buck. like these two feelings can and do co-exist. he feels like leaving buck is a choice he's making. and he would not feel like that unless buck was not just important to him but. literally the most important person in the world to him next to christopher. moving to texas is a choice he has to tear himself in two to make. "you would lose everytime" means just that. it's an easy answer, a natural answer. it's his son. but the rest of it isn't easy. the reality of the choice. which is losing buck. isn't easy. and i think eddie wants buck to recognise that but without having to tell him. in the same way buck struggled to admit how much it was affecting him but wanted eddie to recognise that instead of having to tell him. this fight only happened because they're afraid to tell each other—to admit—how much they love and need each other. it's literally put a spotlight on everything they haven't been saying over the last several years. because well. we're almost there. we're almost at the point where they will tell each other.

The thing about 911 is that the shipping drama and discourse surrounding it completely belies how insane this show truly is. A man is attacked by a shark on the freeway. Ghosts are probably real, and so are curses. The most recent season opens with a bee-nado that segues into a plotline about an autistic half-orphan child landing a broken plan. The most dramatic moment between the fandom's favorite ship is one of the characters getting shot by a sniper in broad daylight in the suburban streets of Los Angeles. Buck's introductory scene of the entire show is him stealing a firetruck to have sex with a Tinder hookup. The fire captain's backstory is an addiction that led to the death of 148 people. He's best friends with his wife's ex-husband and once proposed to said ex-husband's boyfriend on his behalf while that boyfriend was performing brain surgery on a man in the middle of a burning building. There's a guy who sneezes every time he lies and then lies so hard he almost dies. One of the main characters gets rebar impaled through his skull and is back to work the next month with no lasting side-effects. They basically never fight fires.
