We are torn between nostalgia for the familiar and an urge for the foreign and strange. As often as not, we are homesick most for the places we have never known.

Michiyo Yasuda, long time animator & color designer of Studio Ghibli passed away
Japan’s Mainichi has reported on the death of long time color designer and the chief of the ink and paint division of Studio Ghibli Michiyo Yasuda, who passed away of an undisclosed illness on October 5 at the age of 77. Yasuda started working at Toei Dogo before she was 20 and joined Studio Ghibli co-founders Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki on the 1968 anime feature Horus, Prince of the Sun aka the Little Norse Prince.
Yasuda later worked on Miyazaki’s ‘78 TV anime Future Boy Conan, pre-Ghibli feature Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and Studio Ghibli’s features such as Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and Ponyo, as well as Isao Takahata works like Grave of the Fireflies.
While Yasuda officially retried after Studio Ghibli released Ponyo in 2008, she came back in 2013 for Miyazaki's “final feature” The Wind Rises. Yasuda won an Animation Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 from the Japan Movie Critics Awards.
Her career spanned over five decades, beginning as a tracer for animation before shifting into color work. She was present at the inception of Studio Ghibli, and continued to run the Color Department until her retirement following PONYO in 2008. Then returned to work for The Wind Rises.

Public schools in Boston are using a new global map to help show students what the world really looks like.
Boston Public Schools, a network that includes 125 institutions, announced Thursday that instead of just using the widely popular, over 400-year-old Mercator projection map, which grossly distorts the size of the world’s countries and continents, classrooms will be incorporating the Peters projection map because it is more accurate.
👇🏾👇🏾 The Peters projection map shows the world’s countries and continents at their true scale.
“Overall, we hope students gain a deeper understanding of the importance of researching and analyzing multiple perspectives in order to develop their own conclusions about the world around them,” BPS’ History and Social Studies Director Natacha Scott said. “By exploring geography, we also hope to increase an awareness of the relationship between themselves to other countries, communities, cultures, and individuals around the world.”
First of all I’d like to admit that no map is 100% accurate (though some are more accurate than others). But the ISSUE here is that the Mercator map doesn’t even get the size of Africa and South America right to the naked eye. Whichever map they use, people need to keep in mind just how many countries can fit into the African continent.
Africa is enormous, and people still somehow call it a country. I personally hate that!
The Peters projection represents a more area accurate map, which makes other continents more proportional to one another.
And what I like the most is that white people triggered by accurate map projections!!!!
Latinx students across the country have also felt the brunt of racist attacks.
And this cosplay edition is for blerds!
There are so many critics, haters and racists in this sphere, so sometimes it is hard enough to represent yourself if you are black!
Cosplay is about dressing up as your favorite characters, and it doesn’t matter what is your skin color or body type or who the character is so long as you enjoy it!
Netflix has canceled Sense8 after two seasons. [x]
The streaming service confirmed on Thursday that it would not be moving forward with the sci-fi drama from The Wachowskis. “After 23 episodes, 16 cities and 13 countries, the story of the Sense8cluster is coming to an end,“ said Cindy Holland, Netflix’s vice president of original content.
“It is everything we and the fans dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kick ass, and outright unforgettable,” she continued. “Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and international cast and crew, which is only mirrored by the connected community of deeply passionate fans all around the world. We thank Lana, Lilly, Joe and Grant for their vision, and the entire cast and crew for their craftsmanship and commitment.”
The decision to not order additional seasons of Sense8, which first debuted in 2015, comes a week after the streaming giant canceled The Get Down, its ambitious music drama from Baz Luhrmann, after only one season. The moves mark rare ones for the streamer, which has renewed the vast majority of its slate as part of an aggressive push into scripted originals. Other Netflix series to be canceled include Marco Polo, Lilyhammer, Hemlock Grove, Bloodline and A&E pickup Longmire.
Rumors of Sense8’s uncertain future loomed in the days before the announcement. Castmember Brian J. Smith helped get a #RenewSense8 hashtag trending on Twitter in an effort to keep the show alive.
