the parallels between jay and gillion's backstories are so important to me. being told your whole life how youre going to grow into something you dont have any control over and constantly training for it. being oppressed by a title, a name, something that determines your every action. having no choice over your future, your autonomy.

and yet when they leave, when theyre exposed to the rest of the world, they see how the environment they grew up in was flawed. what they learned was from such a severe perspective, and having the space to grow and change let them see the true beauty of the world.

Listen I get that Jay is a marksman and an archer, and very rarely fights in close quarters, and I also understand that these aren't stiletto height, and the platforms are a reasonable width, but you cannot tell me that Jay took down her father, won the paramount tournament, travelled to a different realm and broke into like... At least three military buildings, and wore heels the whole time???

what is a legacy, what story will be left behind once you are gone.

chip once believed his history would be a smudge on some random journal. a name jotted down from someone who passed him. the black rose pirates well they were gone, the only people who cared or loved him were stolen by the sea. there went his story. what place in the world did he have without them.

gillions legacy would be forever tarnished he decided. he would be remembered as a failure, the triton that wasn’t enough. he had one person who in a sea of hatred who would maybe try and tell the true story but that would never be a given. his legacy was to be nothing but the shattered statues they made of him.

jay ferin once had a story she knew would be told. the daughter to a powerful navy officer who followed in his footsteps. her legacy would forever be in his shadow, any work easily pushed to the side. her sister was the one to leave behind the real mark, until she was taken. then the spotlight fell on her and now history took interest

the legacy of the riptide pirates was one that started in a small town by a group of villagers that had found their oppressors defeated but spread. they were the ship that took on all if you could prove yourself. they were the crew captained across the ocean by three pirates who yearned to leave their own story behind

gillion and panic attacks

the first time gillion has a panic attack on dry land it is after the effects wear off from laffinlot. he is absolutely sure this will be his end. there is no way for him to get enough oxygen in, no water to stop his throat from closing on itself.

he watches the world shrink into pin pricks, every noise around him simply turns into thuds of his heart rate. this is his penance he decides, his failure to save everyone in the town, hurting his friends and most of all failing to fit the title his parents had always expected of him.

as his skin feels like it was drying and shrinking on itself he feels a pressure on his shoulders. hands, warm and calloused plucking him back to reality. he can hear a voice that calls to him, louder than his heart rate reminding him that he has a body still and a heart that pumps.

chips holds him for what feel like an hour, unmoving, rubbing his back and holding him back from falling off the edge and promises him that yes he will always be there
