fun facts about ukrainian vampires (opyr)

• opyri can be of two origins: born and made. made opyri are made by witches, who can smear a baby with blood of a man who went to sleep without praying, thus making the child an opyr.

• opyri have two souls. when opyr dies, only one soul goes to the otherworld. this is why they continue living after death. they aren't immortal though, and only live post-death for seven years. you can presume the person who died was an opyr and will return later if right after their death was a great storm.

• they are very merry fellas and are known to sing, dance and play musical instruments. you can see them partying if you go to the village border at midnight. they also can be spotted smoking a pipe while laying in their coffin.

• opyr can turn into variety of different things: a child, a white or a black dog, a cat, a wolf, a horseman.

• if someone sneezes and you don't respond with "bless you" such person can become an easy target for opyr.

• to get rid of the opyr, you must take them into your arms and carry them across the town or village three times. classical stake to the heart works too.

a folk song from chapayevka village, chornobyl region

this type of song is called голосіння (holosinnya — "keening"), and they are usually sang by women over the dead body during the period between death and funeral. in this song, the woman is mourning both her dead son, and the land that they were forced to leave due to the chornobyl disaster.

translation under the cut

We went there

The houses are overgrown

Can't see anything over the weeds

Oh my God

Thirty years had passed

Now I can't even recognize

Neither my house, nor my village

Oh my God, oh my God

Oh my son, my nightingale

My son, my little dove

How far they brought us

And I will never come to you again

And will never see you again

Oh, my land, my golden one

My land, my dear one

Oh, how far they brought us

That I can't come to you

Our roads, our paths are overgrown

And our houses, and everything

I can't even recognize

Not the village, nor any of our backyards

We got lost, can't even find our houses

Oh my God, oh my God

so so fucked up how Ukrainians in online spaces are like "I don't want to see anything or anyone ruzzian on my dash ever again, no matter their views" and some foreigners go "oh, you're so racist for this, you can't bring tumblr blogs into this" or "it's just pictures of moscow why are you blocking them for this jesus" or smth like that, and it's like. fellas is it "overreacting" when people don't want to see or hear anything related to a nation who oppressed them for centuries including at least two genocides with one of them going on right now, is it "overreacting" when people want to see literally any other country except the one that is killing Ukrainians every goddamn day. bro imagine living in a country that's not being invaded and arguing with someone who's currently sitting in a bombshelter hiding from ruzzian rockets second time this week about how they shouldn't bring posts about dostoyevsky into this.

How to Get a Chronological Dash as a New Blog

I've been working on a Tumblr Roleplaying 101 guide, and in doing so wound up making a brand new Tumblr account for some screenshots. And this process made me realize how weirdly complicated Tumblr has made it for new accounts to get a chronological dash. So if you just want to see posts from people you follow, in the order that they made them, this what you have to do.

First, go to your settings, go under Dashboard, and scroll down to Preferences. Toggle off Best Stuff First. This switches your dash from an algorithm feed to a chronological one.

How To Get A Chronological Dash As A New Blog

If you have an older blog, that's all you have to do. But if your blog was created more recently, you have an extra step.

The Tumblr dashboard has different tabs, which you can see across the top of your feed. Most older users have completed tuned these out, because we don't care about anything other than the basic feed. There is a Following tab, which shows posts from users you follow, and a For you tab, which shows recommend posts Tumblr thinks you'll like.

How To Get A Chronological Dash As A New Blog

On blogs created before May 8, 2023, the Following tab is the default view. However, blogs created after this date have the For you tab as the default view. (This is an intentional change by Tumblr.)

How To Get A Chronological Dash As A New Blog

This means if you are a newer blog and want to see posts from people you follow, you'll need to manually switch to the Following tab every time you open the dashboard.

If you do not like this change, consider contacting Tumblr staff. Submit a form under the Feedback category and explain that you'd like the option to make the Following tab the default for new blogs. And please, be polite! There is a person on the other side of the screen who likely had no say in this change, and even if they did, they don't deserve to be yelled at.

Madara's sharingan

I have a feeling that I might tell about this somewhere, but since I can't remember, I'll still talk about it here.

So, it's considered that Madara get his sharingan that day at the river because he lost a best friend. BUT. I don't think so.

Do you remember this?

Madara's Sharingan

Butsuma and Tajima tried to kill each other's heir to inflict as much pain as possible. In fandom this episode is often referred to as a confrontation of equals - parents against parents, Tobirama against Izuna. And I have yet to see anyone mention such a small detail as attempted infanticide.

And then, it was Madara and Hashirama, who sawed their little brothers. They each in their turn repelled the weapon of the best friend's father.

And I think THIS is why Madara got his sharingan. He saw the kunai flying at Izuna. His brother was closer to death than ever before. Madara almost lost it. It was the fear of losing Izuna, the pain and devastation of being killed by his best friend's father that caused Madara so much pain that his sharingan awakened. He wasn't thinking about Hashirama at this moment, nor was he thinking about Tobirama. The only thing he was concerned about was Izuna's safety. In the second it took him to bring that kunai down, he was already reliving the loss of Izuna in his mind. While the rock flew and Madara did not yet know if he had time to save his younger brother, he was already mourning him. He felt this loss. He felt fear, loneliness, sorrow.

Think. He had already lost three brothers (there were 5 of them, right?). Probably, their mother also died at that time. Is the end of a friendship comparable to the grief of losing loved ones? The fear of losing another close person - this is what caused the suffering that awakened Madara's sharingan.

Actually, I think it would be better if we saw that he awakened sharingan when he threw the rock to bring Butsuma's kunai down. What if his sharingan awakened so that Madara would definitely have time to save Izuna?)

However, I still believe that the interruption of communication with Hashirama was not the main reason. Knowing how much Madara loved Izuna, this horrific scene was the last straw. After a grown man ambushes you kids and tries to kill a small child for the advantage in a duel, you will never be the same again.

Actually, I have some hc & wanted to talk about it, but have no one to listen, so I'll live it here xD Why else would I have "fandom blog"...

So. Yes. I think Tobirama hate and is afraid of Madara. But not only him. He hates and fears all of Uchiha kind. I was rewatching the 4th war arc and if you listen to Tobirama's monologue when he explains his thoughts on Uchiha's to Sasuke… Well, it's disturbing. It's sick. In front of orphan who lived through the massacre, Tobirama tells that all Uchiha's are "possessed by evil" and they also "possessed strength that surpassed that of the Senju". And he controlled and oppressed Uchiha's to make them useful to the village. Because he didn't like that Uchiha's family ties were placed above fellow villagers (whether he himself would prefer not Hashirama, but someone else - an open question). So, he literally said in front of a massacre survivor who's entire family and clan was killed for Hokage's demand that his family members were all "possessed by evil", insane, unstable and "welp, if they all died… it's their fault" (he heard, that they were killed, tho).

He didn't think of Uchiha's as of people. And he's not ashamed to claim that, even. He saw Uchiha's only as something useful. And if they are not so useful as Tobirama expects (at the same time, the standards of loyalty were lower for other villagers) then they deserve to die. He never ever regretted that he killed Izuna. And he never ever regretted that he forced the Uchiha clan to live in a ghetto on the outskirts of the prison and created prejudice against them. He wanted to have Uchiha's power at his side, but with ultimate devotion to the level when he expected that Uchiha's will sacrifice everything, everyone, even own child, even themselves to prove their loyalty. Even Hashirama seems to be shocked about his lil brother's behavior. He tries to hush Tobirama, but Tobirama simply don't think he did something wrong. He would, if that was someone else - another Senju, another shinobi, anyone else, but not Uchiha's. Uchiha's had to come to terms with prejudice, oppression, inequality, life on the reservation, mistrust and provocations. And if they're not - well, let's kill them. He had never even considered that simply giving the Uchiha's equality with the other villagers and stopping oppressing them would solve any conflicts. Because he didn't see them as people who deserved a normal life like everyone else.

So, yes. He hated Madara. He hated Izuna. He hated Uchiha's. And he fears them.

Do y’all think tobirama hated Madara because I most definitely do think he did? Part of me believes that he blamed kawaramas and itamas deaths on him simply because madara is an uchiha and an uchiha with power .

Im also 100% convinced that Tobirama was scared of madara and his power( and no one convict me differently)

You can never know

I just finished project dragon and want to memorize this 'cuz all this situation made me happy.

So, I had this dragon, Felis, for some time now.

You Can Never Know

Except he had another skin that didn't spark joy to me anymore for some reason. And now he wears this cool cute kitty-cat skin that can't be reprinted anymore because it's old and creator lost that image. So, there will be no new copies. And I wanted this skin so bad for so long, but never found someone who would sell it. I have come to terms with the fact that this is no longer possible. Untill this month. I maneged to buy it!!!!

And not just this one! I bought female version too! And now Felis have a sister, Felisia! She's so cuuute.

You Can Never Know

I finished her today. And I want to be happy about it!

Also, today I finally saw translation on Susanna Clarke's Piranesi to my native language. Can't wait to buy this book. Trying to find at least something to cheer myself.)

Why Ukrainians didn’t produce a Tolstoy?

there are a lot of things that can piss me off, today it was this tweet:

Why Ukrainians Didn’t Produce A Tolstoy?

and all i wanted to do was to ask this person, why the fuck do we need a racist misogynistic piece of shit as a standout author if we have Shevchenko as our prophet?

but you don’t know who he is? of course, you don’t. that is the thing with imperialism: you destroy other cultures while promoting yours as the only way to legitimise your rule. even if those territories are of higher cultural development. but there is always a way out of it: kill them all. kill anyone who poses an existential threat to your hegemony. throw them into jail. forbid them to write and paint. send them to gulag. kill them. torture them. execute them.

if you don’t know Ukrainian literature, it doesn’t mean that it‘s nonexistent. if you don’t know "a Ukrainian Tolstoy", it means there is a Ukrainian Bahrianyi, who was sent to the gulag but ran away and was the first person in the world to openly criticise USSR in his pamphlet Why I am not going back to the Soviet Union. "I don't want to go back to the USSR because a person there is worth less than an insect"

there is a Ukrainian Symonenko and a Ukrainian Stus. there is a Ukrainian Lesya Ukrainka and Olha Kobylyanska. a Ukrainian Kotsiubynskyi, Ukrainian Drach, Ukrainian Olena Pchilka and Ukrainian Lina Kostenko. and so many more of the bravest people who despite all wrote in the Ukrainian language about Ukrainian people and for Ukrainian people.

there are thousands of beautiful texts that weren’t translated because this would’ve harmed the empire. that is why you are reading Dostoevsky and not Khvyliovyi.

but there are also thousands of texts that were never written. just how many more poems would’ve Stus written if he wasn’t killed by the Soviet regime? how many more texts would have Pidmohylnyi, Semenko, Yalovyi, Yohansen, Zerov written if they weren’t shot at Sandarmokh?

just have many texts have the world missed out on because Khvyliovyi committed suicide as he couldn’t live in the world with Stalin’s repressions. "today is a beautiful sunny day. I love life - you can't even imagine how much", - he will write in his death note as he shot himself with his friends waiting for him in the next room.

or maybe there was a Ukrainian Nobel Prize in Literature waiting for Tychyna? maybe, but he submitted to Soviet authorities and started writing hails for the regime, suddenly forgetting his own literary style and living his entire life in fear. fear of what? fear of getting caught. of getting destroyed just as all of the previous Ukrainian intelligentsia.

I’m tired of my people being silenced. I’m tired of my poets being undermined by "great” russian literature. it’s not worth a single Symonenko’s poem. it’s not worth a single paragraph of Bahrianyi‘s prose.

the greatness of russian literature lies on the bones of Ukrainian writers. to be this high, they killed hundreds and they are still doing it today.

the body of Ukrainian children’s writer Volodymyr Vakulenko was found in the mass grave in Izium in September 2022.

there will be a Ukrainian Nobel Prize in Literature, and there will be more Ukrainian books. there will be Ukrainian Zhadan and Zabuzhko, Liubka and Izdryk, Sord and Kidruk. there will be Ukrainian literature.

another funny thing is that this person is Indian and let me tell you: the fact that you stand up for one empire even when your own country has suffered from the doings of another is evidence of deep colonial trauma and I hope you will cure yourself soon

Russia destroyed the Kakhovka dam inflicting probably Europe’s largest technological disaster in decades and putting thousands of civilians at risk. This is a heinous war crime. The only way to stop Russia, the greatest terrorist of the 21st century, is to kick it out of Ukraine.

— Dmytro Kuleba (@DmytroKuleba) June 6, 2023

Yes, they have done it, the act of ecocide. It was predicted almost a year ago when it was first reported that the Russians had mined the dam. They've been preparing for it. Over the past few months, they have been draining the reservoir while simultaneously filling all reservoirs in Crimea, because blowing up this dam means no more fresh water supply to Crimea. So everyone who claimed that Russia invaded Ukraine to secure fresh water for Crimea can now go fuck themselves.

Of course they first claimed it was Ukraine's doing. Although some occupiers already happily admit that it was russia who blew it up, and call for blowing up more of Ukraine's infrastructure.

UPDATE: video evidence that the russians did in fact blew it up, and it wasn't destroyed due to any shelling from the Ukrainian side

It's typical russian scorched earth tactics. Blowing up the dam can possibly prevent the Ukrainian army landing on the left bank of the Dnipro, and it frees russian troops from the left bank, meaning they can be sent as reinforcement to other front lines, for example, in the Donetsk region.

It is probably the greatest ecological catastrophe since Chornobyl, with thousands of people affected, left homeless, entire villages destroyed probably forever. But the russians don't give two fucks about that. They don't care about any life. Their main objective is not necessarily to claim the land for themselves, but rather to ensure it is not Ukrainian. If they cannot have it, they want to leave it uninhabitable.

I am Bakaneko and I have a problem

Someone should stop me from buying new dragons. This is starting to turn into an unhealthy habit. I needed to finish my current dragons, not binge buy 4 more projects. But...

But look at them! How cute they are!

I Am Bakaneko And I Have A Problem

And I have undone nocturne whom I want to turn into this:

I Am Bakaneko And I Have A Problem

But it's sooo expensive TT Especially the Halo.

I just wanted to make staff for Felis, the Duke. And his manor needed maid, gardener and governess for the kittens. And priest, whom guy above will become someday.

Ughh.

And I have at least 4 more projects to make fairy court. But they can wait till Night of the Nocturne...

Ughhh. Why did I put this curse upon myself? Goddamnit this escapism.

Ai no Kusabi Volume 8 Retranslation

image

Hello everyone!

I present to you the full retranslation of AnK Volume 8.

As most of you know, official translations of volumes 7 and 8 are extremely poorly done and there has been a need to properly (re)translate them. Volume 7 has already been retranslated by Rabi and can be found here. And now, you can get volume 8 through the link below:

Download

With this, our fandom finally has a chance to properly read the, arguably, most important part of the story. Guy’s thoughts, actions and motivations have especially suffered in the official translation, so I really hope you guys would carefully (re-)read it to try to get the whole picture. I also think that Raoul and Katze have been really snubbed, with entire sections related to them just outright skipped.

Happy reading, and once you’ve read it, feel free to share your thoughts and opinions! Love, Darcy PS: Don’t forget about my retranslation of volume 1~~ and visit my blog for other AnK translations.

What The Past Couple Days Have Felt Like

What the past couple days have felt like

As a Ukrainian fan of VC, I am very disappointed with the plot twist of the series. Of course, this could be predicted, but I hoped to the last that Armand's Ukrainian origin would be reflected at least in the series. It is very bitter that even in the 21st century, in a series that positions itself as modern and tolerant, Ukraine was again erased from history and canon.

They turned a blind eye to Ukraine. Again. And this is right now, when the genocide of the Ukrainian people and culture is taking place. They play up the narrative of a non-existent Ukraine, a Ukraine that invisible to the world.
