Headcannon that James was the biggest hater ever. He and peter were mad shit talkers and soon Remus joined that club. James says “I love you” to every single one of his friends all the time. The only person he never says it too is Regulus. And this freaks Regulus out so much because he’s the only person James doesn’t say it to even tho he’s his boyfriend so that must mean he’s not in love with him. But here’s the thing, James has not said “I love you” yet even though he says it with everyone else because with Regulus IT MATTERS. It’s not just a quick “bye I love you” like with his friends it’s a real meaningful impactful on their relationship kind of “I love you” and he’s scared he’s going to scare Reg off. On top of that James has never had someone love him back romantically and he’s scared shitless that Regulus won’t be in love with him the way he wants.

So the day Regulus works up the courage to just tell James he loves him, entirely expecting to not hear it back, he’s left in complete shock when James pulls him into a hug and starts crying saying how much he’s in love with him. Reg starts crying too and they both end up in a mess of tears, limbs and snot as they tell eachother how much they love each other.
