i think about a version of aftg where andrew had to chase after neil and actually catch him in order to keep him. like i imagine a scene where neil's paranoia gets triggered so he runs away and andrew chases after him, not used to the effort so his legs burn and chest hurts but neil is right in front of him, arms length. his knees ache, threatening to buckle but that firey hair in front of him urges him forward. he's about to give up, wonder what makes him even run after this thorn on his side but then neil's looking over his shoulder. eyes wide and blue, shocked for all they're worth and then neil's stumbling.

he falls and stares up at andrew's hunch figure over him amazed. no one has ever caught up to him, no one's ever tried. but here they were, eye to eye with neither one clear what causes the stand still. unsure of why andrew chased and unsure of why neil stayed.

so we're talking baltimore, right? if neil found out lola and romero came for him and instead of going, he did what his mother taught him to do. he dropped everything and ran. he ran even though his muscles ached from the game and he ran away from the best year of his life because maybe for a fleeting second he thinks his mother is waiting for him he thinks she's going to be there when he turns the corner, she's going to give him a new passport and a new name and they're going to escape like they always do and no, maybe she's behind him, maybe she's calling his name, maybe he can hear her, why is he running from her, he needs to stay with her, he has to stay with his mother, he needs to keep her safe just like she kept him safe. for a moment he is alex and stefan and chris and nathaniel and all twenty-two names when he turns around for just a second, and it's not her, and it's not his father either.

the hands that catch hold of him don't hold weapons. andrew stops him from running and he says his name and suddenly neil isn't anybody other than neil, and for one fleeting moment he wonders if he dreamed it, if he could stay here for real. andrew looks scared, but his grip is firm and his voice insistent when he says "you're staying."

for a second neil thinks he can. for a second he wants to.

then he glances over andrew's shoulder, and the past he's spent nine years running from is standing right there.

all he can say is "you have to let me go."

just adding to this the narrator who is called dias who is the one with the kid the kids name is milo is like unreliable in the sense that he doesn't really care at the start of what the groups going he also doesn't really give two fucks about himself so like all his energy that either isn't put into keeping milo alive or ice hockey is literally used making the teams issues harder i mean like it does get better after like the groups been dealing with it for 3 months on the 5 month someone in the team dies because of the whole crime familys thing going on in the actual world they all live in

me out here writing a oc fic thing of a college ice hockey team one of them has a kid the teams dysfunctional as fuck and they end up going to a doffrent dimension every night for 6-8 hours and there's the fucking crime family shit not to mention suicide crime family has a damn facility for these experiments on the other dimension man this team is going so much shit

does anyone else suffer from the aftg effect? i remembers the moment i finished tkm and I was looking into the air thinking "nothing its ever gonna top these books", like, yeah, after aftg I read more books, but i wasnt able to connect as hard as i connected with the Foxes; and it never matters how long i stay away from the books bc im busy with my life, every single time i go back to them without fail, to the way too sweet andreil fanfics, to the beautiful fanarts, to this cursed fandom that always likes to suffer for some reason, they always drag me back. it never fails to impress me how much these silly little books mean so much for me and for many people too, and thats the aftg effect, the feeling of knowing ur fucked bc theres no way ur going to get over the books in this lifetime or the next one, once u start liking the characters, theres no way back.

THIS those kids are so fucking interesting to me like those four where screwed the moment they were all born, aegon was like most likely an infant when people started to think about him being on the throne instead of rhaenyra like their all so tragic helaena being cursed to know that she and her siblings and children will die is just *chefs kiss* aemond losing his eye due to claiming a dragon agted being bullied for not having one, daeron being sent away to live at old Town not really knowing his siblings all that well but willing to die to protect and avenge his family is just *cries* alicent the mother out living all of her children (and I think grandchildren 2) and hating the colour green, the same colour of the dress she wore to be her own person to defend her children and fight for them

like obviously the team black/team green divide is stupid and missing the point of the dance and like obviously the show is written with a rhaenyra bias but likeeeeeee. HOW can you not be endlessly compelled by how irretrievably doomed the team green kids are. how can you not be intrigued and endeared by how narratively fucked these poor stupid teenagers are. pov: you were born to be a weapon in a civil war started by people who don’t care about you. that is the reason for your existence. you are obviously fated to die young and tragic and everybody knows it. you are a team green kid.

I’m a sucker for “remember aftg is set on the 2000s” and I don’t think I ever realized the things that were happening at the same time on the backstories:

1998: Mary runs away with Neil (10). Renee (15) is arrested

November/December 1999: The twins (13) find out about each other. Tilda begins hitting Aaron

Late 1999 - early 2000: Allison (14) is hospitalized for bulimia 

March 2000: Andrew is sent to juvie

May 2000: Aaron and Tilda move to Columbia

Summer 2000: Nicky (17) goes to Germany. Neil (12) moves from Germany to Switzerland

2001: Luther finds out about Andrew, six months later (late 2001- early 2002) the twins(~15) meet

Spring/Summer 2003: Andrew (16) leaves juvie and moves in with Aaron and Tilda

Summer/Fall 2003: Tilda dies five months after Andrew moves in and Nicky (20) goes back to Columbia to be with the twins. Dan (18), Renee (20) and Allison’s (17-18) first season. Neil (15) is in Canada

Early 2004: Nicky (20-21) is attacked and Andrew (17) is put on medication

Summer 2004: Matt’s (17-18) and Kevin’s (18) first season

Fall/Winter 2004: Kevin offers a spot at the Ravens to Andrew

Winter 2004 - early 2005: Wymack offers a spot with the Foxes to the cousins (18 and 21)

Summer 2005: The cousin’s first season (18 and 22). Mary dies and Neil (17/18) moves to Millport

December 2005: Kevin (19) gets his hand broken

Circa April 2006: Neil (18/19) signs with the Foxes
