My Somewhat Final Thoughts Of My Hero Academia

My somewhat final thoughts of My Hero Academia

Note: Now that MHA is now doing an epilogue and is ending soon, I might as well give my final thoughts about this series. I’ll probably continue to talk more about it after the series is officially over but I’m not going to do a full fledged hour long review because I have better things to do.

This is a generic shonen empowerment fantasy that managed to screw its own theme and message. Any good will I would’ve given to series at the beginning is completely irrelevant as it when on. The morals and themes are constantly changing to throw random s**t on a sheet of paper that either doesn’t make sense, contradicts what being shown on screen, or if it doesn’t fits the tone of the story. My hero is not a deconstruction of the shonen genre that does anything new that would make it stand out. Most of the ideas and plot points created either have horrible execution, given no amount of attention where they’re just ignored or just have horrible payoffs. It follows all the exact same tropes seen in every other series and makes them worse. It also gets to the point where it rips off Naruto and makes the same mistakes it did. The amount of plot twists that are excused as some kind of subversion are obnoxious and predictable where’s it gets incredibly annoying. The world building is horrendous and just makes the story feel small for a world that has a life changing impact. The power scale doesn’t always make sense and it does nothing but act as a way to reward characters that didn’t earn it.

It has a dangerous and horrible message for victims of abuse and bullying. My hero has no problem telling the audience that if you’re a victim of any kind of abuse, it’s your problem and you should just act like it’s not a big issue. Apparently it’s ok lie to your friends, family and colleagues that you can trust but it’s not ok to lie or even hold accountable to your abuser. And no matter if he/she has a reason for the way they are, you are always in the wrong and you should spend your sad life praising and benefiting them.

There exists way too many characters for the audience to be invested in and after watching them for several arcs, they are just stereotypes with nothing new or original about them. Many of them come across as either being stupid, annoying, useless, unlikeable, petty, ignorant or just both. Some characters will either exist to benefit others or just highjack the story, ruining every other character’s chance to get any sort spotlight. The series is way too reliant on putting focus on unpleasant and uninteresting characters to please its large audience. The humor is way too reliant on a character’s personality trait. No matter what they do, the story expects us to automatically like them regardless of how horrible and selfish their actions are. Izuku may not be the worst character, but he’s no where near as great as everyone hypes him up to be. Bakugo is an unbearable mess of a character that serves no real purpose in the story and exists to take away every characters chance of development. His development is one of the laziest and obnoxious parts I have ever seen in any story and yet he’s the most popular sadist in the show with no sort of reason or sympathy for me to like him. Any criticism given to this d**khead is automatically shot down and people like me get harassed and called a brain dead immature f*g for stating our opinion.

Aside from Twice and Gentle/ La Brava, these villains are not that interesting and what ever traits about them gave them something to do is absence. Shigaraki is the stories biggest wasted potential that went from being an idiot to being an incompetent idiot to benefit my left nutsack. Toga is a Mary Stu who went from being a sad and annoying character to an annoying and self centered bitch who complains after being told her actions are wrong. Dabi is just a Gary Stu who’s only interested in wanting to kill his dad. Spinner is a joke that is constantly scammed by his creator.

The only saving grace I can give to this series is the art style of the manga and some parts of the Todoroki family drama. I can even say that Horikoshi’s art style and how he designs characters and panel designs inspired me as an artist. The anime as a whole is fine but it’s not perfect, but that’s mostly because it doesn’t do a whole lot of creatively/artistic things to make it on par with the most popular anime series. As an artist, I would recommend my hero as a reference to use to improve your work. If you just want to read or watch a series that has fights that just make you feel some kind of emotion, then you might get something out of this series. It’s not even the absolute worst thing I’ve seen; I’ve seen much worse in other genres other than shonen manga. It’s just rare to find a badly written series without being surrounded by d**kriders. It’s just a disaster of a series, and I wished I spent my time during the pandemic watching another series like Demon Slayer, or Black Clover.

my thoughts on canon Muzan

For being the main antagonist of this series, there is a reason why people naturally gravitate more towards his Upper Moons, and that is the execution of his characterization. I’m sure many of you have come across posts explaining the references to natural disasters and his philosophy and also his constant claims to godhood, which are aspects that I do think Gotouge intended to share, but it’s not particularly delved into.

I have had complaints before that it was really difficult to relate to Muzan’s character in any way. Now, I realize that was the point Gotouge was intending to make, however this realization didn’t quite satisfy me like it should have. He’s arrogant, stubborn, and sometimes flat out childish, but at no point do we see any strengths. It’s not clear if he has a genuine passion for science. Or for learning in general. He doesn’t have a single likeable trait to contrast his faults, other than he’s charismatic, but we do not see that part of him nearly as much as we should.

His motivations for becoming the perfect Demon don’t have any plans afterwards, either. Like, what was he going to do after he accomplished his goal? We don’t know. And the fact that we really don’t know, when it should have been stated at some point, is not great, since again, this is our main antagonist. In a shounen.

I don’t know, I don’t doubt Gotouge had big ideas for Muzan, but it feels like they really bit off more than they could chew, and the genre that Muzan is placed in being action-focused didn’t do him any favors. I am a firm believer of the idea that he would have fared much better in some Edwardian era science horror where his philosophy and unique outlook on life would have been expected to be properly explored. But, yeah…

I Hate Yoriichi X Muzan (and how Yoriichi is depicted)

TW !! : talks of SA, mentions of inc3st, slight spoilers

Besides them both hating each other and dying with those feelings of mutual hatred, I despise Yoriichi x Muzan solely because most of the fans I've run into romanticize r@p3. For some reason, they just love the idea of Yoriichi gr0p1ng and forcing himself on Muzan, and apparently I'm supposed to find this either romantic or funny.

I've hated Yoriichi before (I dont anymore, currently I just don't really care for him) because of his fans. He's always depicted as this creepy dude who has no problem torturing his own BROTHER under the pretense of 'making forcing him to be brothers again' and straight up SAing his enemy. Not to mention the way they make Yoriichi so obsessed with Kokushibō makes me wonder if they really just ship the twins together.

Like I'm all for the trope where siblings would do anything for each other but the way most of the fandom depicts Yoriichi's love for his brother looks more romantic than platonic which is concerning.

And I hate it because Yoriichi is this sweet, kind man who's lost his family and just wants to live a peaceful life. He's not the type to r@p3 someone for whatever reasons you could think of. AUs where canon characters have different personalities are cool and I actually love them, but making them a p3d0 or SA someone when they canonically aren't that type of person is just 🙁

Idk maybe I'm the weird one for not finding SA funny but that's just me ig 🫠

Bakugou stans who hate Endeavor and Endeavor stans who hate Bakugou make me laugh.

Because when you get down to it, they both benefit from the same things: in-universe privilege, narrative advantages, and plot manipulation. Their arcs enable each other in a way, they're both abusers being given more exposure and grace than their victims. They're both constantly being propped and accepted by the other characters despite being horrible people.

Criticizing one and not the other is obtuse. They're cut from the same exact cloth, the issues with their characters are nearly identical. And the focus of both their characters contribute to the overarching problem of MHA; not only pandering to abusers but pandering to those born privileged and who knowingly abused that privilege. And neither had to face actual repercussions without being protected by the author.

The only difference between them is in the literal sense; Endeavor is a worse person morally while Bakugou is a worse character narratively.

They both still suck ass

Jiro And His Wife 💎

Jiro and his wife 💎

This is Kaori, she’s the Hidden Wood (Kobayashi clan) village doctor and the first wife to the clan leader Jiro Kobayashi. Her personality is quite timid but she is very stubborn when she wants to. Her work with medicine and herbs is unmatched to anyone, her passione to help people comes off as healing to the point the marking on her forehead appeared after her patients are properly nursed back to health.

But due to her patients being healed from even the most life threatening condition she was seen as a witch in her old village and was treated so poorly that she was banished from the village. When she stumbled upon the Hidden Wood village she healed an injured bear and it guided her into the village. The elders saw that she was no threat and had them tended to an injured Jiro. Once nursed back to health they fell in love and got married. He gifted her that hair pin she wears.

Jiro also has two other wives, after marrying Kaori he marries Tenshi who was a fellow hashira that he met through his sister Akira and lastly the women he was formerly engaged to named Ares. Who unfortunately got married by Tengen after Jiro called it off due to a family crisis.

Aaaaa I wish I could make some art to accompany this post, but I can't do so in the moment and I really want to express my "post-epilogue Mob and Tsubomi friendship" thoughts. LONG text below.

They start talking some time after Confession Arc, but their bond actually begins after Tsubomi moves from Seasoning City. She enjoys having someone to tell her how things are going on her hometown, as she didn't keep in touch with all of her school friends and misses how life was in Seasoning. This helped her to get more used to this drastic change on routine.

It was... awkward on the start. Mob had to process that Tsubomi was nothing like the perfect concept that lived on his head, besides the fact that she was upset by people idealizing her (its not nice to know you're part of the problem). Tsubomi on the other hand needed to shut down her slight suspicion built with the experience of bad rejection aftermaths and trust in Mob's intentions. After all, he was her good childhood friend

It doesn't take much for them to get over this, though. Mob comes to care a lot for the real Tsubomi and makes an active effort to know her better. This flawed, human Tsubomi was different, but she was a dear person to him and so it wasn't an issue. Tsubomi is relieved to see Mob's desire to become her friend was genuine (and feels a little bad for doubting). She was glad to get back in touch with him after so such a long time and got impressed with how much he had matured without her noticing. In a way, she also used to see him as that little boy from years ago...

They talk to each other by phone almost daily, speaking of how was their day and sending random stuff. If anything happens, they sure would inform the other.

Mob discovers she likes the yellow cat plush and keeps showing her cats he saw. Tsubomi tries to read some of his favorite manga to understand what he is talking about.

Tsubomi got overwhelmed with how much her school life changed in her new city. She was very happy to not being treated as a deity, but also wasn't used to being a common student. Mob helps her to become adjusted to a normal life and stop wearing the mask she was forced to use in Salt Mid. He understands how weird it is like to be your own vulnerable, true self next to others.

In exchange, Tsubomi's experience proves to be very valuable when Mob gets more attention from his peers and has to face social situations he never participated of before. Parties are stressing. She too recognizes he is still learning to express himself and is happy to see how he opens up with her.

Althought Tsubomi learns to be more authentic over time, she still struggles with demanding too much of herself. She panicked after thinking she didn't do good in her exams, and Mob spends an hour explaining that she isn't special and how its bad to expect she'll be flawless all the time. Besides that, her skills shouldn't define her worth as a person, as she is much more than her results. Tsubomi remembers this.

Mob often asks for Tsubomi's opinion. Sure, Reigen is still his go-to for advice, but some topics are more comfortable to talk with someone his age. Mob really values Tsubomi's confident honesty and her practical, direct solutions. He also feels safe talking with her because he knows that despite being blunt, she wouldn't say anything to hurt him.

They visit each other occasionally when they're on high school! The train rides are quite long, though, so most times it's more practical to invite more people and have a sleepover. Mob and Tsubomi's respective friends know the other pretty well.

“Worship me but don’t WORSHIP me” is an insane line to say to your brother who jerked you off and is now explaining himself, and who you’ve been unconsciously (?) grooming since the moment you set foot in Thailand.

Saxon Ratliff you’re not sane in the head….

Like I knew Lochlan was batshit insane, and I know they’re both deep in denial (especially Saxon), but this reaction is not the reaction a normal 26 year old adult would have after something like that happened with a younger sibling. The sexual component of the relationship only appeared in episode 5, but it was the “innocent” kind of worship that got them in trouble in the first place. That’s why you’re both here dude, because you blurred all the boundaries between the two of you. And that’s his response??

I swear to god that whole scene had me cracking up. Between Lochlan calling him a narcissist (deserved), and Saxon just trying to bury all of it so blame doesn’t have to be assigned…
