From the river to the sea šµšø
nobody can tell me that she burns by foy vance isn't about katniss everdeen from peeta's pov.
She is a little explosion of hope
Never turns the lights down low
She can go there if you want to though
There are no markings on her country roads
No signs that show the way back home
But when you get there, you won't wanna go
_
I've frozen over my desires
Covered up in virgin snow
But when I stand beside her
She burns, yeah, she burns
Like petrol soaked paper and fireworks
And I'm burning, I'm burning
I'm burning so deep that just breathing hurts
I'm melting darling and I can't let go
adding to my tbr!
What is it? YA Contemporary novels are what is often described as āRealistic Fiction.ā Except for young adultsāthat is, teens. These feature a world, that for all intents and purposes, is our own and usually takes place in the present, but occasionally jumps back a decade or two (but not much more than that.)
This list is best if you just want those feel good, mindless reads that just leave you feeling good inside. Thereās not gonna be any literary masterpieces here but I read purely for enjoyment. I would consider most of these books I liked to read on the toilet, to put it simply, and honestly Iāll probably just have a whole library in the bathroom of my future house.Ā
**personal favorites
Sarah Dessen Novels**Ā (simple, light, and easy to read coming-of-age love stories / I have a whole separate post dedicated to her)
To All the Boys Iāve Loved Before** Trilogy by Jenny Han: Fake dating is one of my all time favorite tropes in fanfiction/dramas and this is the YA book that does it the best because it takes inspiration from KDramas. The movies are good in bringing the story to life, but I really just feel like the books are better. I donāt really care for Jenny Hanās other books that much but TATB is just such a staple in YA contemporary. Also bonus points for Asian representation. (It was actually just supposed to be a duology but she spoiled us with a third book)
My Life Next Door** by Huntley Fitzpatrick: This that slow burn, friends to lovers, fuzzy feelings type of book. Itās got Sarah Dessen vibes and thatās always a plus in my book. I really liked how mature the characters were in this and like not frustrating (rare in teenage stories). It was funny, characters were developed beyond the main love story, and was just totally feel good. Itās YA contemporary at its best. It gets kinda dramatic towards the end similar to how a fluffy KDrama likes to throw in a random plot twist for dramatic tension at the end but thatās okay. Iām down for it.
Little Blue Envelopes Duology** by Maureen Johnson: Okay so you either like both books, like one book way more than the other, or dislike both. For me while I liked both, I enjoyed the second book (The Last Little Blue Envelope) WAY MORE. If you read it, yāall will probably figure out why but these are just fun travel around Europe books. Itās like a big old scavenger hunt across Europe and somehow that just makes it all better. I never reread the first book, but Iāve read the second book multiple times.Ā
Ruby Oliver Series (4 Books) by E. Lockhart: This is one of those series that gets better as the series goes on, so even if youāre not totally into The Boyfriend List, itās pretty worth it to keep going if youāre looking for something funny and filled with A LOT of boys. Ruby is flawed, interesting, has anxiety and frequent panic attacks, was abandoned by all her friends and cheated on by her boyfriend and you canāt help but feel bad for her but also cringe internally at all her trials. The therapy sessions are hilarious, the footnotes are great, and overall just a good time. I did read this in high school though so my tastes might have changed but I just remember really liking these enough to buy the whole series (Also all the books are super short and easy to get through)
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart: Opposite of all the feel good, fun books on this list is We Were Liars. The plot twist is A1 and even though I didnāt personally connect with any of the characters, it was fascinating to read. Itās on the more serious side but is so well done and I find myself recommending this book to people when I donāt wanna share with them that I have the literary taste of a high schooler.
Anna and the French KissĀ by Stephanie Perkins: I read this in middle school and I think it partly inspired me to take French in high school. It was just such a sweet romance and you canāt really be mad at this book because itās so wholesome and genuine. Itās just a book that makes you love love and also really makes you wanna go to boarding school in Paris. Thereās two companion novels (Lola and the Boy Next Door, Isla and the Happily Ever After) but they donāt really hold a candle to the original.Ā
Save the Date by Morgan Matson: Okay if you ask me what I specifically remember from this book, I canāt tell you a damn thing. That might be because I read most of it sitting in a Barnes and Noble but I remember having a good time with it. Iām also biased because I love weddings and the chaos of them and this book just captures it. I heard her other book Since Youāve Been Gone is better, but Iāve just never gotten around to it.Ā
Someone Elseās Life by Katie Dale: I was that kid in school that spent a lot of time in the library scoping the shelves for good YA and I picked this one up at random and it pleasantly surprised me. The plot twist was hella juicy and it was basically a Makjang KDrama (overly dramatic plot points). Like this shit was wild and like I donāt even know if it was actually good or if my high school self just got sucked into the craziness of it all. Iām putting it on the list anyways.
Flat Out Love by Jessica Park: This is another contemporary that has a big plot twist reveal towards the end. Itās one of those books that makes you fall in love with love but it also doesnāt miss out on the angst. It incorporates emails, social media, and texting without being cringe and I just remember it being a good book.
Perfect You and Something Maybe** by Elizabeth Scott: I have no strong reasoning for recommending these books outside of that I really really liked them when I read them back in the day. They were on the short side so I was always rereading them. I think itās a trend with my contemporary recs in that I randomly found them at the public library and devoured them. I ended up loving them enough to actually buy them. I think what made them stand out was that they were funny and simple and just the right amount of spice to keep you enticed.Ā
Somewhere Only We Know by Maureen Goo: KPop Star meets a cute tabloid reporter (WHO IS ALSO ASIAN) and sparks fly. Objectively, this should not be good. Subjectively, I greatly enjoyed it.Ā
Kasie West Books:Ā I donāt really know how she does it but this lady churns out books like a madman. Most of them are not great, and theyāre really just a minor step above Wattpad but I figured Iād give her a shoutout just for the sheer number of mindless reads she puts out. If you gotta read her, the books I would suggest are On the Fence, The Distance Between Us, and P.S. I Like You.
To Read List:
Parachutes by Kelly Yang
BEFORE AN EXPEDITION ā ATTACK ON TITAN.
⢠includes eren jaeger, armin arlert, and jean kirstein.
eren plops himself down at your feet, resting his arms on the tops of his knees as he silently offers his hair tie over his shoulder. well you do it betterāthatās what he insists every time you tell him to tame that own damn mane of hisābut you still fall victim every time. your fingers rake through his locks, gathering them at the back of his head.
āif i see a black flare, iām coming straight to you. iāll kill those abnormal bastards,ā he blurts out. you loop his hair through one last time, letting the elastic smack against his head as you let go. he ignores your futile pleas of donāt do that and you canāt break the formation, rising to his feet and looming over you with hands on his hips.
he reaches for the hood of your cape, pulling it down over your face and playfully pushing your head back. he wants to tell you that youāre being stupidāwants to scream at the top of his lungs that he doesnāt care about that damn formation, he only cares about you.
you pull the fabric off with a huff, turning to face eren who now sits right beside you. heās staring, an intense gaze that makes the heat rise to your cheeks. he runs a gentle hand along your jawline, taking in your features as if itās the last time heāll ever have the chance to do so.
ādo you realize how important you are to me?ā
armin shuffles through the crowd of scouts with little sorries and excuse meās falling from his lips. his eyes scan through the sea of black uniformsālocking onto the familiar figure that is youāand suddenly heās shoving the rest of his way over.
āhey, donāt forget this,ā he urges, holding up a ball of green fabric in his left hand. itās his capeāyes, his. he was the one who suggested switching them, even if they are the exact same. the way he sees itāif by some god forbidden chance he were to not make it back aliveāthis was the closest he could get to dying in your arms. so with one swift movement, he wraps the garment around your shoulders and fastens the button in front.
āperfect,ā he says, running his hands down your arms and grabbing onto one of your hands. he gestures towards the stables with his other, a sweet little after you falling from his lips as he follows closely behind. he rests a gentle hand on your lower back as you clamber onto your horse, straining to lace his fingers with yours once you settle into the saddle.
heās so incredibly bothered by the fact that he has a different objective than you. he hopes that one of these days youāll hop down from your horse and say screw humanity, iām not leaving youābut that only happens inside his selfish fantasies. so armin just holds on, for as long as he can before heās forced to say goodbye.
ābe careful out there, i need you to come back.ā
jean kneels before you, angrily fiddling with one of the straps that wrap around your thighs. heās mumbling to himselfāsomething along the lines of come on, work with me dammit! yeah, heās a little on edge, at no fault of your own of course.
āhow does it feel? tight enough?ā he tugs gently on the fabric, looking up at you for confirmation. a simple nod of your head lures him to his feet, and his features soften almost instantaneously as he grabs your hand. he brings it high above your head, forcing you onto your tiptoes as he twirls you aroundāa little tradition heās adopted ever since becoming so hellbent on making sure all your gear is up to his standard.
ālooks good to me,ā he says, smile growing wider as you mimic his movements by holding his own hand as high as you can reach. he never thought heād be doing thisāespecially with that pair of turquoise eyes searing into the back of his skull, but that look on your face, it was pure happinessāand god was it ever beautiful. so now, he spins for you every time, not an ounce of grace in his movementsābut charming nonetheless.
youāre brought back to earth by the sound of the commanderās voice, a familiar heaviness greeting you both. he pulls you in for one last hug, holding onto you a little tighter than the previous time.
āhey, promise me that wasnāt the last time we get to do that.ā
