I feel like we are losing the plot to katniss everdeen, I understand the state the word is in right now and that the people want someone to look up to, and katniss everdeen is a good character for that. But we can't forget that katniss everdeen never wanted to fight she wanted to survive and make sure the people that she loved survived with her. That's why she volunteered for prim, that's why she became the mockingjay, to make sure that peeta was safe in case the rebels found him, that they wouldn't kill him, that's why she did what she did with the nigthlock, not because she wanted to defy the capitol, but because she wanted to survive, and to make sure peeta survived with her. There is even a point in mocking jay where people are discussing what actions katniss made that touched them and made them like her. And none of those actions where made with the principle of defying the capitol or make people see her as a martyr of revolution, it was just katniss being herself and caring for others, it was just katniss showing raw emotions, like when she covered rue with flowers, she did that of course to show that rue wasn't just an other tribute she was a person that was cared for, loved, that didn't deserve the fate she got, to show that rue wasn't just an ally that she would quickly move on from, but a person she would truly remember forever, that rue wasn't just a tribute for the entertainment of the capitol but a real person. Yes in that case she did defy the capitol but not because she wanted to be a revolutionary but because she wanted to pay tribute to someone she cared for. When she drugged peeta to try and save him knowing fully well she might not come back, but that the wish of him surviving was big enough for her to do it. Katniss everdeen never wanted to be the simbol of revolution, she wanted to survive and to make sure the people she loved survived with her, and we know this for the very first page when she tried to drown buttercup, only stopping because of Prim, Katniss wants to survive, and she doesn't want her loved ones to suffer. Of course she is more layered then this but I think people keep forgetting this aspect of her pretty often.

Spoiler Free Review of Sunrise on the Reaping from someone who just stayed up all night to read it and is now broken emotionally

Suzanne is not fucking around anymore. This book is about so many things but the thing that stuck out most to me was the rage I think dominates this prequel more than any other book in the series.

When the news came out a book about Haymitch was coming after years of fan requests (and a film to be developed in tandem) I’ll admit, I had my doubts.

But what Collins delivers is more brutal a gut punch than I think even the most hard core fans of this series were anticipating. In the wake of political unrest across the US and world wide, in an era of disinformation, she tells the reader clearly to look and think for themselves, and shows the atrocities that can come when we do not.

This book is about anger and injustice and it does not try to convince its reader otherwise. At times you can feel Collins shaking the reader by the shoulders: ‘See?! See what happens when you blindly accept what they tell you? See what you let them take?’.

Fans familiar with Haymitch will not be surprised by a lot of the major beats of this story but the focus on propaganda still leads to some interesting reveals. This is the goriest of Collins series and in many ways I think will be the hardest to adapt, perhaps her own rebellion against the industry that continues to profit off her work and contort her message

Thinking about the lyrics from ballad of Lucy Gray but applied to Haymitch and Maysilee Donner, and his girlfriend, and his family, and literally all the people haunting him while he slowly drinks himself to death after winning the games

Ship dynamic: She's everything, and he's just Ken/Worships the ground she walks on gotta be one of my favorites honestly

the way that katniss only remembers peeta telling her always after hurting her heel in catching fire after getting shot in mockingjay and peeta being hijacked is foul

I can’t find words that would describe how much I loved her character and how Hunter Schafer is a perfect casting for this role.

SUNRISE ON THE REAPING SPOILERS

“I first saw the girl at the Hob when she was just a baby. Burdock was so proud of her, he toted her around everywhere. After he died in that mine explosion, she started coming alone, trading the odd squirrel or rabbit. Tough and smart, her hair in two braids then, reminding me for all the world of Louella McCoy, my sweetheart of old. And after she volunteered for the Games, that nickname couldn’t help but slip out. I didn’t want to let them in, her and Peeta, but the walls of a person’s heart are not impregnable, not if they have ever known love. That’s what Lenore Dove says, anyway.”

When we first meet Haymitch, we can instantly tell that he has made a habit of distancing himself from tributes. That he has nobody left he loves, so he pushes away anybody else that tries to come into his life. But now we know how full of love Haymitch was. How deeply he loved Lenore Dove, how deeply he loved his mother and Sid, his friends, even Hattie. Everything Haymitch did was out of love. He was reaped because he tried to protect the girl he loved. As he was reaped, he did his best to protect his sweetheart, 13-year-old Louella McCoy he grew up with. He tried to distance himself from the other tributes, but eventually he couldn’t help but love them too.

He couldn’t help but call Ampert “Buddy.” He couldn’t help but call all of the district 6 tributes his doves, and mourn all of their deaths, no matter how little he actually knew them. How Louella was replaced, and how he wanted to hate her replacement, but gave her the name Lou Lou and protected her like their own. Haymitch was the one who initiated the hug of all four tributes from 12. He was distrustful of Wyatt, and grew to mourn him like a brother. He carried Lou Lou like his life depended on holding onto her. How he hated Maysilee Donner, and thought of her as the most stuck-up girl in 12. He called her Sis. He grew to love her like the sister he never had. She died as his sister.

All of the love that Haymitch didn’t need to give, and yet he loved so endlessly and so whole-heartedly. And with every person he loved, he lost them, and lost a part of himself. No wonder he didn’t want to let Katniss and Peeta into his heart. He had already tried so hard to push away Burdock, who relentlessly tried to care for him in his despair.

Then, in comes Katniss Everdeen. She carried with her a piece of every person Haymitch tried to push away. She was Asterid, Burdock, the Seam children he grew up with, all in one person. He didn’t want to let her in. He couldn’t have.

And yet, Haymitch couldn’t help but call her sweetheart.

Because Katniss was a woven tapestry of every person he had ever loved. She was his best friend’s daughter. She carried Lenore Dove’s songs. Louella’s skin and hair. Wyatt’s protectiveness. Maysilee’s fight, Maysilee’s resistance, Maysilee’s pride, Maysilee’s pin. And in the arena, she painted the best poster Haymitch and Maysilee could’ve ever hoped for- Rue, surrounded by flowers, her passing in dignity and not as another number in the games. And refusing the Capitol their winner by eating the berries with Peeta.

It’s no surprise that Katniss and Peeta broke down Haymitch’s walls. Haymitch had the flint striker, the spark. And Katniss was the fire that caught 25 years later.

My theory for the next Hunger Games book is that it’ll follow a spy from INSIDE the capitol (who’s actually organizing and failing to start a revolution), and/or a tribute from district 12, who died in the games.

The spy (Plutarch Heavensbee?) sees how the world is build, sees their own position in society and decides to rebel against it since it’s completely wrong. Sure, it may take a while, but in the end they actually do something!

And maybe, the spy tries to make a winner, or a revolutionary, of the district 12 tribute (or any other tribute), but it doesn’t work. They die, and maybe they try another tribute, and that person dies, and it continues until finally they hatch a plan?

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) dir. Francis Lawrence

Vague spoilers for sunrise on the reaping

Not actually any like direct spoilers but mentions book topics. Peeta centric

I keep seeing people talking about the body doubles and Peeta and how scared haymitch might have been and first - how do we like actually know it’s not? It’s probably not cause Lou Lou was a not great replacement but they had 25 years to change it -

But I listened to the winner takes it all and got an idea and idk if I have the time or energy to write it but fuck me man -

Peeta who did get replaced. Who is dying and betrayed them and fighting with the last bit of him who only ever wanted to be himself being sat in front of a pale, hallowed blond boy who looks just enough like him to make him pause. The boy who has no name who they say has to become him, who he fights but it hurts them both and slowly, slowly Peeta gives up bits of himself to put this boy back together because it’s always been easier to live for someone else but could he die for someone else? Someone that’s not her??

And being the boy with the bread, feeding and nourishing this boy with a puffy, stitched mime of his face. Slowly realizing he doesn’t leave this but Katniss could still have him, he could still send something, and this boy taking his shape. Telling him you love her you would die for her she’s everything please - until this not-him is a little-bit-him. He’s losing himself, he only wanted to die himself, and is this the perfect poetic end of giving himself a chance to live or the despairing tragedy of how that only hope dies?

Peeta dies and his blood sprays across this boy that’s not him and not his blood and maybe a district 1 defect from another world (oh what his father would say) but maybe they are now cause there’s no separation, just the lost little blond boy who went too far from home.

Ngl with winner takes it all on this felt like a very bloody, very what’s left of you when they gave it all away? concept

Cause then what? Do they notice? Will they let themselves? Does katniss know there’s something wrong past the obvious and realize or does she love him because to not is too much a betrayal for all he lost for her? Does haymitch see his sweetheart with too-sharp cheekbones and accept the loss? Does he spiral, wondering if he’s finally too far gone?

Maybe this is too niche I’m not sure this is worth posting but it was a bad day and here comes the word vomit -

Peeta was always endgame no matter how you slice it. Obviously there's the narrative choice, already gone into that, but from a character perspective too.

I mean there's the whole 'gale winds are loud, devastating, and quick to pass' and 'pita (bread) is considered the cornerstone that helped create humanity' thing, there's war vs peace, wrath vs mercy, self vs many, etc etc.

One of them brings destruction (gale is defined by what he kills, be it rabbits or sisters, and the systems he wants to bring down) and the other, creation (peeta is defined by the things he makes - speeches, bread, art).

One of them will end the world, the other will rebuild it from the ashes. Obviously Gale is needed - you can't make omelettes without breaking eggs after all- but he was never a sustainable, long term option.

WHICH THEN BRINGS ME BACK OH SO NICELY to how love IS a central theme of the series, because there HAS to be a 'so after'.
