Because to Snow, Lucy Gray is an ideal. She's a picture perfectly representing what Snow should have had, what he deserved. And that's what still haunting him. The thought that the same picture may be forever unattainable.

But to Haymitch, Lenore Dove is everything. She is his age, and she grows and morphs as he grows and morphs. She is his other half. She's not a picture, no, she's a book that keeps growing.

To Snow, Lucy Gray is forever the same 16-year-old girl who ~betrayed~ him, and she haunts him accordingly. But Lenore Dove ages and grows gray alongside Haymitch, like she’s walking next to him through the years instead of lying in her grave. If you even care.

The real personal tragedy of the District 12 victors' stories is that without the Hunger Games Haymitch would have been dad to a whole gaggle of happy kids, probably some his own, and some adopted into his family, and those kids would have grown up with Katniss and Prim, and probably Peeta too.

Like one big happy family.

Hunger Games Theory about Johanna Mason

I have a theory I only realised recently (and maybe it's a stretch, but I think it's fascinating to think about):

We know a lot of the first names from the districts relate in some way to their district industry. But what about surnames? It's not as common, but we see some instances: the Trinket family in the Capitol, or let's look at Plinth in District 2, for example. What is a plinth? A sort of column, typically of carved stone. What is District 2's industry? *Masonry*. You know who else has a surname related to *Masonry*? Right, Johanna Mason.

So knowing District 2 trains & supplies a notable amount of Peacekeepers, it doesn't seem like too much of a stretch to think someone from 2 with the surname 'Mason' may have become a Peacekeeper. In any case it seems like an odd name for someone from the lumber district. So my theory is that a Peacekeeper from 2 was stationed in District 7, fell in love with a girl there & had a daughter who they named Johanna.

Now, we know that the rules for Peacekeepers forbid marriage & having children. We also know there's been more than one rigged reaping. So I think Johanna's father was a Peacekeeper from 2 & she was purposefully reaped to punish him for breaking the rules.

HOWEVER, this theoretical father would have a) known he broke the rules of the Capitol, & b) been trained in combat as a peacekeeper. Katniss states people in 12 don't go into the mines until they are 19 so that they never have the chance to learn how to use a pickaxe BEFORE being reaped for the games to put them at a disadvantage. So are girls in District 7 usually chopping lumber at 13, 14, 15? I'm not so sure. So Johanna could have been trained to fight by her father with the most inconspicuous weapon available in 7: an axe. Johanna received a TWO for her training score; Katniss says this was a trick to appear weak to her opponents, but what if it was also to hide the fact she had combat training from the Gamemakers/Capitol?

Well, the plan to reap Johanna to punish her father backfired spectacularly on the Capitol when she revealed she could fight & ended up winning the games. So while I do think part of the reason they killed everyone close to Johanna is because she resisted being trafficked by the Capitol, if this theory were true they would have also killed them to make Johanna pay for winning the games when she was supposed to die as punishment for her father...

so i was online and saw some insatiable freaks (jk love you guys) thinking about the next hunger games book ALREADY. Because, it's clear to us now that it's not just one main serie or one main series and an antagonistic prequel. no. suzanne is diving in depth to various aspects of dictatorship and dystopia, all centered around this world in Panem

it'll be a few years before she even thinks of releasing another hunger games book but i think something like a plutarch one makes the most sense, or something exploring what's outside the districts in some way. I honestly thought on some level THAT was going to be what sunrise on the reaping was about, how the capitol utilized propaganda to hide the rest of the outside world because we were hinted at that in thg and tbosas. I would absolutely love one switching perspectives (which we've never seen!) between 1st and 3rd, and between plutarch and some like long lost rebel from before the dark days (if only).

Because it's really, really obvious that there was/is some level of contact with an outside world even after the collapse of civilization that apparently only left Panem intact. I'll reblog later with my full theory and all of my evidence because i have quite a lot of evidence and a pretty strong theory if i do say so myself

Also me: you’re missing the point! You’re missing the point! YOURE MISSING THE POINT! He grew up starving. His best friend almost died of hunger. Most of his people live in poverty. He watched children die in a bloodbath every year for the capital’s entertainment. The girl he loved went into the games. Was tortured by the capitol. His district was bombed out of existence. Nearly everyone he knew was killed. Their only crime was being fed up of being hungry and oppressed and sharing the same district as Katniss. All those innocent people. Murdered. He had to take refuge in a district that was bombed out of existence and forced to live underground. Of course he joined the war effort. Of course he designed unethical bombs and battle tactics. He wanted revenge. He wanted the capitol to have a taste of their own medicine. He wanted the rebellion to succeed. And tell me you could live through what he did, and that no part of you would be screaming for Justice and vengeance. Gale is you. You are Gale. He represents a part of feelings and actions that reside within us, even if you don’t act on it.

“But he killed prim!” Exactly! Gale loved prim. She was a second family to her. He looked after Katniss’ family. He saved them from the district 12 bombings. He loved her. He never would’ve put her in danger. He never would’ve put in order for a bombing if it would kill Prim. But coin would. And did. She took what was meant to be a tool of Gale’s righteous revenge for all the suffering he and his people suffered through, only for someone in power to take it and use it to kill someone he loved.

There’s some many lessons to take. We can’t control the things we create. War spares no one. Even justifiable rage and actions can end up rebounding and hurting those you love instead of your targets.

“He drops bombs on babies” is too simplistic of a takeaway and does a disservice to the story and Gale.
