10 inspiring and helpful YouTube channels for digital artists

People are asking us how the art we share can be so good.

The answer this time isn’t so simple. An artist has his own way on shaping his style, he takes his time to experiment and so it becomes quite difficult for others to try learning his art style and making it their own. It’s even wrong.

But we can tell you that many artists learn by getting inspired by others’ art. Watching an artist while he paints can be motivating - and of course it can teach you a few technical tricks.

So, here there are ten YouTube channels you should check out.

1. FZD School of design

It’s a school founded by Feng Zhu, amazing concept artist with a lot of experience in video games, films and commercials. His videos are real episodes/lessons and they are very helpful. And, well, they even have a school in Singapore…

2. China digital painting

This channel doesn’t feature tutorials but shares full video processes by Chinese artist. In this period we are seeing many young artists inspired by an art style that’s typically Chinese - it features dramatic lighting and mood. Though such a technique can be found in other artists like Bouguereau and  Rembrandt.

3. Ctrl + Paint

A channel dedicated to the digital painting in Photoshop. Very helpful for those beginners who want to learn how to use this software and how to get better with art in general.

4. Level Up!

One of the most known groups of digital art of Facebook can be found on YouTube as well. The founders are Wojtek Fus and Darek Zabrocki. Each session (episode) features a different digital artist. This is great because you can compare the different painting processes. The main theme of this channel is concept art and fantasy/sci-fi illustrations.

5. JJ canvas

This is the channel of Jorge Jacinto. He uploads speedpaintings, but they are very inspiring if you want to look at how a wonderful surreal landscape can be created in twenty minutes - in time-lapse of course.

6. Webang111

Another channel with time-lapse videos. Very inspiring if you are into colorful and cartoony illustrations.

7. Ross Draws

His art is wonderful and his videos are super funny! Check out his channel if you want to see how a fantasy illustration can be created from a simple idea - I mean, he starts with two rough lines to close the video with a breathtaking illustration. Crazy.

8. The Portrait Art

Okay, we know. This channel is not about digital art. But it’s amazing art anyway and if you are into realistic portraits, you can get inspired by watching these videos.

9. Cubebrush

Another channel with time-lapse videos, but a few are commented. The videos are about 2D and 3D paintings.

10. Noah Bradley

This artist is a master in the concept field and he doesn’t only talk about his digital method but about his career as well, giving lots of hints on how to become a better artist and how to enter in the art industry.

IT’S PERT NEAR SOUP SEASON, MOTHERFUCKERS.

I am searching for reasons to look forward to fall this year in order to get rid of this aversion I suddenly have to the idea of cold weather. (Long story short: I had a real bad fall and winter last year, and I need an attitude adjustment this year). 

So here’s installment one: a list of soups that I’ve made before and that I cannot wait to enjoy in the next few months:

Daube Provençal (from Katie at the Kitchen Door). French beef stew with orange zest, olives, and an entire bottle of Côtes du Rhône in it. N made it for me a couple of months after we got together, and I always crave it when the weather starts to turn cool.

44-Clove Garlic Soup (from Smitten Kitchen). This soup literally has 44 cloves of garlic in it, some roasted and some boiled. It is far less overpowering than you’d guess from that intimidating number – instead, I found it refined, rich, elegant, autumnal. Absolutely sublime for dinner on a cool evening, with a glass of wine and a toasted baguette.

Chicken Tortilla Soup (from The Pioneer Woman). I am not a fan of Ree Drummond or her show, but I can tell you that around Christmas last year, I made three batches of this soup in one month. It is legit, and it makes a ton. N and I made a huge pot for his family when they came over for Christmas Eve, and they ate every. single. drop of it. in one sitting. Be sure and serve it with lots of fixings: radishes, cilantro, lime wedges, crema, cotija cheese, tortilla strips, diced avocado.

Wild Mushroom Bisque (my own recipe, from the bricolab). I have been working on this recipe for years, through at least a half-dozen iterations. Here is the best version. A cup of it is like a holy grail containing essence of mushroom. Not a pretty soup at all, admittedly – but rich, thick, earthy, and insanely delicious.

Spring Pea and Onion Soup with Crispy Shiitakes and Parmesan (my own recipe, from the bricolab). This one is, no joke, a ten-minute recipe, including sautéing the mushrooms. Vividly green and sweet/salty.

Poached Cod in Tomato and Saffron Broth (from Bon Appétit). Not technically a soup, but you can double the ingredients to make more of the addictive spicy/winey broth. 

Cauliflower Soup (from America’s Test Kitchen). Yes, this soup does have a whole stick of butter in it (about half of it goes into the brown-butter-sautéed cauliflower garnish, which you can omit if you’re a fool and hate good food, or if, you know, you’re watching your fat intake). It does not have a drop of cream in it at all, but you would never know it. A creamy, delicious, magical soup.

Garlicky Carrot Soup (my own recipe, from the bricolab). Kind of a “cleansing” soup. Very easy, very healthy, and very pretty and vivid.

Pasta e Fagioli (adapted recipe, from the bricolab). Made this for the first time recently from a lightly-adapted recipe. Huge fan. Huge. Put in a Parmesan rind if you have one.

Vichyssoise (adapted recipe, from the accidental kitchen). I took a 1962 recipe from Gourmet magazine and spruced it up a bit with truffle oil and Greek yogurt, both of which make this soup something really special.

Thai Coconut Shrimp Noodle Soup (from Food52). Green curry based. Add mushrooms, substitute all tofu, dowhatchalyke.

Thai Coconut Curry Soup (from Chef Michael Smith). Tied for favorite Thai soup recipe. Red curry based. 

Aaand now I’m hungry.

no, listen, when I say I want to integrate more specific solarpunk stuff in my life, i don’t mean to ask for yet again new “aesthetic” clothes that now you have to buy or make to show your support of the movement (screw that i’m consuming enough as it is), or more posts about impossible house goals, or whatever, I’m asking you what my options to build a portable and eco friendly phone charger are, im asking you viable tiny-appartment edible plants growing tricks on a budget,  im asking tips to slow down when my mind and society tell me im not fast enough, i don’t need more rich art nouveau amateurs aesthetics or pristine but cold venus project, okay, i know i should joins associations where I am tho i’m constantly on the move, thanks for that, just, you know, can we get a bit more practical ??? how do I hack my temporary flat into going off the grid for the time i’m here

for some reason i still basically haven’t learned that most people don’t pay attention to the same things i do and so i’ll suddenly react to a song in a movie or restaurant and no-one will know where it came from and i have to explain

it ruins emotional movie scenes, too

i seriously don’t get why some filmmakers put songs into their movies that have a fitting sound, but have completely unfitting lyrics

it always pulls me completely out of the moment

and then i’m a jerk because i’m like “what the hell, why did they use this song” and people around me are like “uhh why not” and i’m like “well they’re supposed to be in love right now and this song is talking about the opposite of that” and then the scene is ruined for those people too because I’M A RUINER, I RUIN THINGS, IT’S WHAT I DO
