I LIVE for middle class Steve bc he’s an Outsider. He’s an outsider to the Insiders (The Socs) and an outsider to the Outsiders (The greasers) and no matter what he does he’ll never be FULLY accepted by either side (in his opinion)

ok this is a totally out there idea but what if steve was raised by soc parents and became a greaser?

i mean, his dad gives him five dollars literally every time he wants to apologize. money used to be able to bribe anyone in mr. randle’s eyes. his son’s no different to him. secondly, i’m pretty sure it says steve has his own car? and total speculation, again, but maybe that was an apology gift too from his dad. steve was brought up thinking money healed everything because that’s how his dad apologized to him. when he befriended sodapop, he was introduced to the gang, and despite the differences in their money, their stories were awful similar, bad he felt like he had more in common with the rest of the east side rather than anyone on the west side. he didn’t care what anyone thought, he’d be a greaser if it meant having a family who actually cared about him.

realistically, i think steve would be middle class at best, but i think this would make for a good au.

Ponyboy who’s not a Mamas boy.

Who’s not a Daddy’s boy.

Who’s Darry boy.

Who’s Soda’s boy.

Who’s Steve’s boy.

Who’s Two-bits boy.

Who was Dally’s boy.

Who was Johnny’s boy.

Who would always be Darry’s baby, ticking him awake, spinning him around after track, nearly crying.

Who was Soda’s Pony, the horse he always wanted, slipping him a Pepsi at the Dx, cuddling, crying with him, lying beside him

Who was Steve’s ‘Shithead’, joking around with him, running over to save him when he was jumped.

Who was Two-bit’s kiddo, making sure he’s not sick, putting a smile on his face, who used to tell his mama he didn’t need a baby brother ‘cus he already had one.

Who was Dally’s ‘man’, fighting in a way for him, hanging out with him, trying to keep himsafe.

Who was Johnny’s Pone, confiding in him, listening, always there for him.

And Ponyboy who with all of this still, doesn’t t fit in. Wasn’t quite right, would never be. He’s different.

Who hates that so much. Who couldn’t quite articulate how to fix it.

Who couldn’t fix it.

Who thought maybe killing hismelf would fix it, post book.

It didn’t work. Walking out bloodied right into the living room. Numb. Dull. He hadn’t expected Steve to care so much. He hated him.

He refused to leave him alone though. Pony didn’t even feel alive right now. He’s just repeated the same phrase to every question, “I’m ok.”

Even if it was a complete different question.

Why couldn’t he fuck off and go back to the Dx?? He wanted to be alone. Soda was waiting, it was only his lunch break.

He didn’t understand why he’d refused to leave him alone. Refused to even leave him alone in a room by himself. Much less the house.

Who pleaded he wasn’t a baby anymore.
