if azula had said “I can’t remember my mother’s face. as hard as I try to picture her, all I can see is zuko” (which obviously azula would never say because she would never want to admit to missing ursa or having any weaknesses of course, but you get it) everyone would’ve been like “oh she can no longer associate her mother with anything other than her sacrifice. she can only remember what her mother did for her brother, and now they are inextricably linked in her mind, so she does not realize the ultimate tragedy that she actually does see her mother every time she looks in the mirror, because she has her mother’s face.”

but of course, that’s exactly what sokka said about his mother, who sacrificed herself to save katara. and now katara feels a massive responsibility to honor that sacrifice, while in turn, sokka bears the responsibility of keeping katara safe, so when he tries to think about his mother, all he can think of is katara and the central role she plays in their narrative. in this sense, they are both adopting kya’s legacy: katara must be kya to prove that her sacrifice was not in vain, and sokka must be kya in sacrificing himself for katara.

when sokka says he cannot picture his mother’s face, what we know as the audience (although not upon a first viewing, because “the southern raiders” is crucial to contextualizing the present dynamic of this family) is that he has his mother’s face. thus, when he tries to picture his mother’s face, his own face, all he can see is katara, because he has sublimated his own identity and selfhood for her ever since kya’s death demonstrated the very real consequences of what katara’s status as the last southern waterbender meant for their family and their people. while katara’s duty is to remember, to carry on that legacy, sokka’s duty is to repress, to deny himself anything outside of his responsibility to katara.

when he says that katara is the one who’s always been there, the one who held their family together after kya’s death, of course she did, because katara was the reason behind kya’s death, so of course katara’s very existence, the fact that she survived, is what gave them the hope to keep going. not to mention that katara knowing that her mother sacrificed herself for her made her feel the need to be her mother, to prove herself and fill that new hole in their family.

katara is all sokka sees because she is the most important thing in his life bar none. sokka cannot picture himself without seeing katara, because she is his identity far more than he has any understanding of himself as an individual. sokka can only understand himself in terms of what he can do for others, and katara is the primary figure in his life and has been for a very long time. he does not see her as a mother, he sees her as his mother, in that he sees her as kya, due to the exact nature of his family history and legacy, but if people think that means that he is somehow careless with katara, that is exactly wrong, and their interpretation of what he said is incredibly reductive because it does not take into account the rest of their relationship as it is depicted in the show, which illustrates why sokka said what he said and why he feels the way that he does.

katara is not a mom, she is not sokka’s mom, she is not aang’s mom, she is not toph’s mom, she is not even momo’s mom! she is her own mom, because she needs to be, because she needs to carry on kya’s legacy and the legacy of her tribe—and that in and of itself is fucking tragic, so terribly heartbreaking, such a weighty burden for a little girl who does not deserve to have to carry the grief and hope of her entire people. so yes, she is her own mom—but she is not anyone else’s.

When I was writing the Fortnight music video, I wanted to show you the worlds I saw in my head that served as the backdrop for making this music.  Pretty much everything in it is a metaphor or a reference to one corner of the album or another. For me, this video turned out to be the perfect visual representation of this record and the stories I tell in it. Post Malone blew me away on set as our tortured tragic hero and I’m so grateful to him for everything he put into this collaboration. I’m still laughing from getting to work with the coolest guys on earth, Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles (tortured poets, meet your colleagues from down the hall, the dead poets). I still can’t believe I get to work with the unfathomably brilliant Rodrigo Prieto on cinematography and my team of dream collaborators: Ethan Tobman (production design), Chancler Haynes (editor), Anthony Dimino (1st AD), Jil Hardin (producer) and Dom Thomas (executive producer). Parliament aced the VFX as always. Joseph Cassell, Lorrie Turk and Jemma Muradian made these tortured looks come to life. The entire crew made this a dream to shoot. I simply do not understand why marauders fans make ship names using nouns/adjectives. Just combine their names like a normal fandom. And half the time you can’t even tell what ship it’s supposed to be. I saw flower used three times for three different people in different ships. This system makes no sense. And then people will use completely different reasonings for the adjectives. Like rosekiller, rose because it’s his last name and killer because he fucking kills people like what? It is so confusing to me guys. Please stop this madness.

So did season 3 Zuko genuinely believe Ozai loved Azula? Is that why he was okay with ratting her out to him with no fear of what he might do to her?

Zuko is a 16-year-old boy that was a victim of abuse pretty much his entire life. It took him THREE WHOLE YEARS to realize that their father disfiguring and banishing him for speaking out of turn/against a cruel plan, and refusing to fight him, was, in fact, a deeply horrible thing for Ozai to do and it was all Ozai's fault.

Is it fair or realistic to expect him to understand that, even though Azula managed to live up to Ozai's insane expectations for his children, it was still unfair of him to put so much pressure on her and that it was only a matter of time before she cracked under it? Can we really blame him for not realizing Azula is being psychologically abused when she's in denial about it herself and actively trying to convince everyone around her that everything she does is effortless? And when the adults he actually trusts, aka his mother and uncle, are ALSO not aware of what's going on right in front of their faces?

Can we blame a child who is desperate to get even the slightest bit of approval and affection from his parent, and never achieving it, for thinking their sibling has an easier, enviable life because they ocasionally get some conditional love?

Can we expect someone who just heard their parent say the words "Your sister was born lucky, you were lucky to be born" to just casually ignore that very clear "I wish you were dead, you don't deserve to exist" and focus only on the implications of "Wait, is he dismissing my sibling's life-long attempts, and success, of living up to his expectations as sheer dumb luck, not hard work and genuine talent?"

I've said once, I'll say it again: Zuko's attempts to survive all the trauma he endured are basically the same as someone who is panicking while drowning and trying to pull under the person that is trying to rescue them because they cannot think clearly in such a dire situation.

It's no coincidence that the two main moments in which we see him having compassion for Azula (in The Southern Raiders and then in the finale post Agni Kai) take place AFTER he has turned his back on Ozai and found a group of people who love and support him. He is now watching the situation from the outside, from a safe distance, not while in the middle of all the chaos, unsure if he's gonna make it.

And for the first time, Zuko can actually see his sister. A prodigy, but still someone that is trying to meet impossible standards. A brave, fierce, DANGEROUS warrior, but also a deeply traumatized child.

There's a reason Aaron Ehasz, the head-writter and executive producer of the show, has repeatedly said that, if Avatar had gotten a fourth season, he would have liked Zuko to essentially be Azula's Iroh and help her heal and redeem herself. He is literally the only other person in the world that knows what being Ozai's child is like, even if he was the scapegoat while she was the golden child.

“The eclipse is Zutara coded” WRONG. It’s Azutara coded. It’s the final Agni Kai. It’s Katara standing in front of Azula, freezing them in water right before Azula tries to lightning bend. It’s Katara being the only character in the series who completely subdues Azula. It’s Azula, who burns hot, who becomes exhausted with heavy breaths, who begins screaming with flames coming out of her mouth. And it’s Katara, who watches with a heavy expression and Zuko at her side.

Piper: “Leo what the hell are you doing?”

Leo: “Trying to see if I can firebend like Zuko :D”

AHHH this is so real. and we also have other characters like emmeline vance (my baby) and emma vanity and more who arguable got mentioned more than like evan rosier AND NO ONE TALKS ABOUT THEM. yes james and sirius are my fav besties BUT MARLENE AND LILY FRIENDSHIP IS RIGHT THERE ITS RIGHT THERE. and i cant even begin to mention the black sisters (heavy on narcissa) CAUSE THEYRE TEN TIMES AS INTERESTING AS evan rosier (mentioned like twice), barty crouch jr (his only personality trait is that hes a badboy and doesnt like his father) and (i will get attacked for this but whatever) regulus black, a canonical supporter of voldemort who only turned his back when kreacher was like. in danger.

can we talk about how the valkyries/marauders era girls are so just mischaracterized?

like here we have james, the funny, smart, prankster father of harry potter. might be immature sometimes. "the sun" "golden retriever" sirius: the bad-boy, a black sheep, sarcastic and snarky. remus, the smart, studious, gentle werewolf. and even peter: sometimes misunderstood, insecure, funny friend.

how about the girls?

lily is harry's know it all perfect mom. either james' gf or jegulus's enemy. marlene is reduced to a sirius variant. mary: popular black girl. shipped with either lily or marlene.

now, despite the pantheon/skittles having little mention in the books (excluding regulus), evan, barty, and reg all have tangible fanmade personalities. the girls?

dorcas: smart black girl. marlene's girlfriend. pandora: evan's spacey twin sister.

it's very strange how nobody creates content about friendships between the girls. there's lots about remus and lily being friends, sirius and marlene, etc. but the girls are almost only talked about in shipping, whether it's with each other or with a guy.

this is NOT saying to stop posting about dorlene or jily or pandalily etc. this is me asking you to ask yourself: why don't you care about marlene and mary being friends as much as james and sirius' friendship?
