Here’s hoping that we get something like ‘Momento Vivre’ as a sequel to Unus Annus
Each November, some people try to write a novel. Others would prefer to do as little writing as possible. For those who wish to challenge their ability to not write, we offer this alternative: producing a complete, playable roleplaying game in two hundred words or fewer.
This is the submission thread for the 2024 event, running from November 1st, 2024 through November 30th, 2024. Submission guidelines can be found in this blog's pinned post, here.
Hey y’all I’ve been looking through the Goncharov (1973) posts, and it seems like most people aren’t aware of the master document, which has all the lore, behind the scenes, and plot breakdown. It’s collaborative, so we can all make sure we get the most accurate depiction of everyone’s favorite movie :)
My favourite moments from Goncharov (1973).
I want to make a post to keep track of all the Goncharov score that’s been uploaded to tumblr, so I will link to all the one’s I’ve found so far and update with any new ones that come up (if you know any I’m missing please share the link!)

Are we gonna talk about the amazing comparison between Mark’s cast photo and everyone else’s?
Red carpet media photo shoot versus Sisyphean Space Man(TM)
The most interesting thing to me thus far about this whole goncharov thing is that Tumblr has collectively constructed some pretty convincing side characters for this movie. Katya leaps off the page as this frustrated woman caged by her lack of autonomy, Sofia coyly plays both sides and acts above it all when really she's desperate for the same freedom Katya is. Ice Pick Joe is a less developed character who nonetheless acts as a stand in for the inescapable nature of cycles of violence. andrey, loyal to a fault, gets pulled deeper and deeper into goncharov's orbit until there's no way for him to make it out alive
and yet with all that I have ZERO sense of who goncharov is supposed to be himself. i've see a lot of stuff suggesting that the film is theoretically about loss, including the loss of one's identity, shown primarily through the way goncharov becomes unrecognizable to himself by the time of his death at the end of the film (seeing himself in a fractured mirror is a common motif). it's very interesting to me that we have a fine time coming up with a group of collective blorbos based on mafia movie tropes, but somehow the main character feels unknowable, to the degree that we had to make that one of the core themes of the film.

Goncharov (1973)
I know everyone talks about Ice Pick Joe, but let’s be real, that scene where he finally kills Gil “the Grill” McGilicuddy? Brian Dennehy STOLE IT.
EDIT
Hey, so we added up the process video for how we made these!
the clock scene is overhyped as hell and film bros ignore the importance of the apple scene bc they're afraid of the homoerotic undertones and i WILL die on this hill!
He was born as Matteo Di Sciocchezze to a poor catholic farming family on November 5th, 1938, in Torre del Greco, just outside of Naples, during the fascist Mussolini regime.
It is rumored that the Sciocchezzes were heavily indebted to the Russian-Italian Chmerkovskiy crime family, after they bought a surplus of inventory from Matteo’s father’s cheese-making business when they weren’t able to sell off the excess supply.
His older brother Macareo was killed by German Nazis during WW2, causing him to have an intense hatred of Nazism and fascism, which would later be themes in his work.
Self-identified as bisexual in his teens but was shunned by his family. He would later join Fuori!, or “Out!”, the first homosexual organization in Italy, in 1972, soon after its founding after being attracted to its initial Marxist ideals. It was one of the first associations of the Italian homosexual liberation movement.
Matteo was briefly married to actress Rita Lozionne and had one son with her, Bruno Lozionne, in 1970, but the separated soon after she gave birth.
Sophia Loren mentioned in a 1984 Variety article that she had been “madly in love with Matteo” at one point during their relationship in the early 1960s but had to end their relationship because of the “incident in Prague.” She would not go into further detail.
Changed his last name to his license plate number, rejecting his homophobic family and becoming disillusioned with the idea of nationalistic self-identity.
Knew John Waters and helped fund some of his earlier films.
Aside from Goncharov, the only other surviving work in his filmography, most which was tragically lost in a studio fire in Milan in 1987, were the underground early 60s short films “Tales of the Dog,” a 4 part series, and his 90 minute 1968 film “Green Candles.” These works are incomplete and partially damaged due to the fire.
Matteo had been in a gay love affair with the married producer Domenico Procacci (pictured below from a still one of Matteo’s “Tales of the Dog” films) during the production of Goncharov. Procacci admitted to this years later in 1998, and that they had been planning to leave for San Francisco before his untimely death.
Matteo died tragically in 1974, however, after falling backwards out of a window, supposedly while playing the mandolin (his favorite past time), as sources claimed.
His son Bruno Lozionne emigrated with his mother in 1976 to the United States, and is currently living in Carbondale, IL, working as the senior office manager of Hardison Supply Co.
If anyone can send in more information on Matteo please feel free to add to this post.
What we know about Goncharov so far:
PRODUCED by Scorsese, but DIRECTED by Matteo JWHJ 0715, get it right.
Robert De Niro, Al Pacino star, along with Cybill Shepherd. Released in 1973.
About Soviets in Naples dealing with the mob. Greatest mafia movie ever made, natch.
Ice Pick Joe is under rated.
Homoeroticism between Goncharov and Andrey is extremely popular in the modern day, bordering on explicit text and desire even through their rivalry and sublimated competing for Katya.
Katya is underused in the movie, and is a complicated character who is both the femme fatale, the center of a love triangle between Goncharov and Andrey, Goncharov’s wife, and also manipulating everyone.
There’s also a scene where Katya kisses Sofia? Tumblr lesbians go crazy.
Had political undertones and commentary, possibly about the failures of the Soviet Union, or leftist ideology vs. realpolitik.
Is over three hours long and kinda slow at times. Violent. Not as easy to watch as the memes and shipping would have you believe.
However conversely film bros who reduce to a badass gangster movie are missing so so much.
Has clock symbolism. Themes of how the characters are trapped in cycles of violence, revenge, hubris, tragedy. Lots of Catholic imagery.
Snubbed at awards, lack of official releases has turned it into a bit of lost media, despite how influential it was.
There have been talks of sequels/remakes through the years but nothing has ever come of it.
GONCHAROV (1973) dir. Martin Scorsese
“It funny because for many years people thought Goncharov was the main antagonist of the film, after all, he’s the one everyone’s out to get, right? But it seems people are starting to understand that in actual fact, it is time that is the main adversary in this story. There’s never enough of it and that torments a lot of characters, especially Goncharov, because he’s fighting so desperately to find his place in a world that is so keen on keeping him ostracized.”

Sitting in a garage waiting room gets really boring sometimes, so it’s great to see five separate emails that barely translate the power struggle between staff and a 16 year-old’s attempt to have everyone who attends your college hear about ‘freaky freds football club’.

I've seen some notes about how they had a trans man playing Canaeus on Netflix's Kaos, and how great that was, but very little about how they have a disabled actor (Mat Fraser) playing Daedelus. And what an incredible, complicated role it is in the show; a man doing the best he can with what he has, using his incredible talents as much as he can. Fraser is a remarkable performer in a hell of a role. (source)

Okay, I need to talk about this.
I am currently a history student studying British politics in the last half of the 20th century, and, in this course, you learn how to analyse a source. A source. This means a photograph, newspaper, extract of a speech, etc. From that time period.
I’m British myself, so this is an A-Level course (a specialisation where you choose 3/4 subjects to study over 2 years), so you’d think they’d be fairly serious about this kind of stuff.
Except, after learning about a reaction to problems in Ireland, we were given a source, and the preface from our professor was that this source, was AI generated.
As in they AI generated something for us to learn and extrapolate information from.
They passed off an AI source as a genuine thing in order to manipulate the information we would learn from it.
React to this how you will, but, personally, I think that is fucking dangerous.
