reasons why race is the most important newsie and subsequently why he’s just friends with spot: a long theory by me

so, in order to understand races relationship with spot, you must first understand races relationship with the manhatten newsies. clearly, he’s jack’s second in command and it’s obvious that he’s a little older (maybe 15) than the other boys. but there’s a little more to it. he takes his job as second very seriously because he cares a lot about his fellow newsboys, this is probably because he came to the house at a young age and its the only family he’s ever known and he wants them to feel safe and be happy. this is seen in the beginning of the musical. after jack yells down to the other boys, it goes to race standing alone on the tower or “lodging house” fully dressed and awake and in the final stages of getting ready when he gives the second wake up call. albert wanders on yawning and talking about his dream, henry walks on in a towel and in the process of shaving, and several other boys walk by during the exchange in various states of being dressed. race is the only one almost entirely awake and ready, meaning that he got up extra early to get ready to make sure things run smoothly and help the other boys get dressed. he is also the last boy to run up to his spot on the tower for the first chorus of carrying the banner. this is because he waits for jack to come downstairs from the roof, greets him, and makes sure jack has everything under control before jack literally yells at him to get to his spot. he barely makes it up to the top before the chorus starts. also, his comment at the delancy brothers (“oh what is that unpleasant aroma?”) and his act with weasel at the distribution gate (“I’ll call you sweetheart if you spot me 50 papes, huh?”) are attempts to make the other boys laugh and forget about their terrible rough lives (so is king of new york, but we’ll get there) there’s also the scene right before the world will know where race makes fun of mush (“the further away from you i sleep”) to make the boys laugh. and he’s the one who directly talks to les and davey when they show up, immediately backing down when jack shows up and letting him take over. so it’s clear that he is a good second, cares about the boys, and knows when to act. now let’s talk about him and spot. since race is jack’s second in command and spot is the leader of brooklyn the two of them obviously know eachother form official business and junk. but just how well do they know eachother? well in the scene where davey jack and les are selling their last papers, race is up in one of the towers. after snyder shows up, race bolts offstage. jack takes les and davey to his safe spot - the theater. but where the hell does race go? well, they are in the lower east side of manhattan, and the brooklyn bridge isn’t far from there. plus we’ve already established that spot and race know eachother, and race runs pretty fast (hence the nickname) so it’s very feasible that he could have done that. this all might seem very skeptical, but at the circulation gate the next morning, what does race say? “Ah, man them fire sirens kept me awake all night.” and someone, i think it’s buttons or romeo i don’t remember makes this face like “huh?” they all sleep at the lodging house, wouldn’t they all have heard the sirens? and wouldn’t the headline have been about a fire? clearly, that means race didn’t sleep in manhatten because he was in brooklyn. and he probably wanted to go back to the house, but spot is a protective boy, and didn’t want walking across the bridge at night so he makes him stay and race left early that morning. now, the next time spot is mentioned is at jacobis when they’re deciding who wants to go to brooklyn. race is hesitant to duck down when jack asks who wants to go to brooklyn. i think this is because race knows he can persuade spot if it comes to it, but he doesn’t want to waste that chance at the beginning of the strike. this is also why he asks about spot almost instantly when jack shows up the following morning, and seems very disappointed in the answer that he’s not coming. so the strike happens and they fail, jack goes missing and crutchies in the refuge. race is now in charge of the newsies and daveys in charge of the strike according to the heierarchy. act two is very important, but what’s more important is what you don’t see happen. the time line is also very important, and i perfected it while not paying attention in english last year. king of New York takes place the day after the strike. the boys did not sell that day, didn’t even bother to look at the headline. they probably spent all of the previous night and most of the next morning cleaning people up and accounting and searching for missing people. they probably slept in for once in their lives and the lodging house is too small for all of them to mope around in all day and they need to eat so race orders all of the boys who can walk to go to jacobis probably around noon. at this point he’s too tired to cheer people up. they’re all moping around there when katherine shows up. she probably first checked the lodging house and then went to the deli because she knew it was their hang out spot. when she presents them with the newspaper, race comes to life and takes everyone’s mind off of the fact that crutchies at the refuge and jack’s still missing by announcing that they’re “famous.” heck, he probably mispronounces oyster on purpose to make them laugh. and if you look at everyone’s faces when he starts tap dancing they’re like “what omg he can do that ??” during this number, davey also hangs back and lets race do his thing because he knows the boys better. letter from the refuge takes place that night. then, the next day, all the newsies go out to swell papers because they have no money and need to eat. jack and davey confirm that. (“every kid who could walk today was selling papes” “and i was right there with them”) so, after work, probably about 5 or 6 pm all of the newsies go out to look for jack again cause he’s still missing. race and davey have a moment on the towers above the theater. race says something to davey, davey nods, race claps him on the back and they go in opposite ways. davey goes to the theater, and race goes to brooklyn to get them for the rally because davey had just told him the plan. the conversation they had was race giving davey temporary control of the manhatten boys while he goes to talk to spot because if theyre gonna continue the strike they need jack and they need brooklyn. watch what happens reprise happens that night (day 2 after the strike if you’re keeping count). race is not present, but all the other important people are: jack, katherine, and davey. race would have been there if he hadn’t been in brooklyn because before once and for all all of the important people have another meeting before the boys get there and race is present. after watch what happens, jack goes directly to pulitzer to tell him about the strike (still day 2) and pulitzer makes him sleep in the cellar, so jack hasn’t come back yet to manhatten therefore davey is still incharge. they also would have been confident setting up the strike for the night after (that would be day 3) because davey would have told jack that race is getting brooklyn. so while jack davey and katherine are all singing and planning the rally, race goes to brooklyn. he probably gets there around 8 or 9 on day 2. keep in mind, this is only day 2 after the strike, he’s probably still kinda beat up and injured. so spot sees him and flips literal shit like tf race you’re such an idiot. he probably proceeds to clean race up (despite protests) while race tells him about the strike and jack and crutchie and the state of manhatten because he cares about the boys damnit. spot listens and decides to join, promising race that they’ll gather everyone the next day. this is also very important: spot discards races green plaid shirt somewhere in the brooklyn lodging house. maybe it had dirt on it, maybe it was covered in blood, maybe it was ripped and needed to be repaired, who knows. but the shirt does go missing. I can’t remember if he gets it back at any point, if he does, it’s because cleaned or repaired it and gave it back to him. brooklyn’s here takes place over a 24 hour period. it begins when race arrives in brooklyn (day two) and ends at the rally (day three). the first verse of the song is spots reaction to what race says is happening in manhatten: “just got word that our buddies is hurtin, facing total disaster fir certain, that’s our cue boys it’s time to go slumming, hey manhatten the cavalry’s comin!” the word “just” implies that spot just found out all the details from race and the word “buddies” implies that he and race are very good friends, not in fact dating. the following morning, (day 3) race and spot grab their papers in brooklyn and head around the city, spreading the word to all of brooklyns newsies and sending kids to other bouros to come to the rally. this is the line “we’re the boys from the beaches of brighton, prospect park and the navey are here” Then, after work that day, so around 5 or 6, spot and race (who has stayed in brooklyn the entire day) gather everyone and begin to head across the bridge, and probably gives them all a pep talk about how they’re so great. “bouro what gave me boith, friendliest place on earth, pay us a visit and see what we means and when ya do we’ll kick you halfway to queens” now, the end of the song is when they arrive at the rally. “now them soakers is in for a soakin, what a sad way to end a career, theta a joke but if they thinks we’re jokin, loud and clear, manhattens here, flushings here, richmonds here, woodsides here, and sos the bronx!! brooklyns here, loud and clear, we is here” also, another reason why we know race went to brooklyn is because he’s the only more important manhattan newsie who comes across the bridge with them. all of the other newsies in that scene are less important manhattan newsies, race is the only main one. so then there’s the rally. still day 3. race makes a very big deal of cheering for spot like wooo yes that’s my best friend !!! race is also now back in control of manhatten. so jack’s a drama boy, he runs off back to his penthouse. Katherine finds him. It’s still day 3. they devise the plan for the paper and go to Pulitzer’s place. in the scene before once and for all, race, davey, katherine and jack are all there in the basement. race talks to davey like hey thanks for keeping manhattan alive while i was getting brooklyn and daveys like yeah no prob and then they hug. race is still missing his shirt. so they sing once and for all and spread the papers all on day 3. on day 4 they go to Pulitzer’s office and have everyone rally in the square and that’s the end. none of that would have been possible if race wasn’t so involved in the newsies. also if you don’t believe me that race and spot are just friends, have you seen the way he interacts with Albert ?

Is it good or bad that I got the meaning when Cooper tells his brother to “Stop being a bunny and step up to the plate” after using the examples “She took bat out of your hands” and “She’s the bear and you’re the scared little bunny”?
