Welcome to Australia…

Where an already endangered species is on the brink of functional extinction…

Welcome To Australia…

Oh, and 500 million animals unique to this country have already lost their lives, upon homes that have been destoryed and lives lost of people as well…

Welcome To Australia…

I mean… we’re only living in a literal inferno…

Welcome To Australia…

415 fires. Fuck are we dying…

Oh yeah and people are just fleeing to the damn ocean, you know?

Welcome To Australia…

Do you want to know what Hell on Earth looks like..?

Welcome To Australia…
Welcome To Australia…
Welcome To Australia…
Welcome To Australia…

Because there it is in all it’s unfiltered, firey rage…

There it is… my home from space…

Welcome To Australia…

This is only the beginning. Our country has not only entered a new decade, it seems a new dawning era as well, because this flaming apocalypse doesn’t show any sign of stopping any time soon.

And you know what saddens me? I’ve never seen Australian tragedies trending here on this website. I mean it’s been going on for months and only now does it seem to really be getting recognized, even if it is only at #9.

And I’m going to be honest with you here - the internet, and media in general is so American centric, this website being no exception. You’d think that an entire continent being on fire for several months with devastating consequences would have more recognition, but no, it really doesn’t. The most notes I’ve ever seen on a post about the Australian fires is at least a few thousand, and that’s about it.

So just… please. If you can, with this post or any other post in regards to the fires going on down here, reblog. Because the only thing that should be spreading like wildfire, is a post about a burning country…

Rennie Advice for Fantasy Writing

WEAPONS - Swords were expensive and not common. - They required a lot of maintenance, to keep them sharp and rust free, to ensure they weren’t bent or cracked or chipped. - You wouldn’t just adventure around with a notched blade. - A razor edge would not cut through bone; for that, you need a chisel edge. - Swords feel heavy if you don’t have the muscles built up, you can’t just pick one up and be able to start swinging accurately without practice. - Never throw. Dumb move, now you’re unarmed. - Bows take years to learn well; crossbows don’t. - Always unstring bow when not in use. - Always carry extra bowstring, don’t let it get wet. - More commonly quiver is hung from the belt. - Arrow wounds are serious. No valiant pincushion charges, no ripping it out. Require medical help. - Shields aren’t just for hiding; they’re for crowding and breaking teeth.

If I think of more lessons they taught me, I’ll add.

Cool examples of various African Architecture styles. A great series of sharp shots. This sort of thing. Really helps in fleshing out creating world settings. I never had a good reference guide for this sort of architecture, definitely a few styles that would be amazing in what call the Spring Continent & the Summerlands Continent.

Cool

Also how can Arthur Conan Doyle write a character like Irene Adler 1891 and have her 1. Outsmart Sherlock Holmes and get away with it and 2. Be in no way a damsel or love interest to Sherlock.. But every modern retelling not only has her be a sexual /love interest character but she is posed as being very very smart… But never smart enough to just outwit him, get away with it and move on? Women can be smart, sure, but no one is allowed to be smarter than Sherlock.

It’s been over 120 years and Irene is, at her best, never as decently treated as the original.

I love this so much... great ideas.

Concept: a D&D-style fantasy setting where humanity’s weird thing is that we’re the only sapient species that reproduces organically.

Dwarves carve each other out of rock. In theory this can be managed alone, but in practice, few dwarves have mastered all of the necessary skills. Most commonly, it’s a collaborative effort by three to eight individuals. The new dwarf’s body is covered with runes that are in part a recounting of the crafters’ respective lineages, and in part an elaboration of the rights and duties of a member of dwarven society; each dwarf is thus a living legal argument establishing their own existence.

Elves aren’t made, but educated. An elf who wishes to produce offspring selects an ordinary animal and begins teaching it, starting with house-breaking, and progressing through years of increasingly sophisticated lessons. By gradual degrees the animal in question develops reasoning, speech, tool use, and finally the ability to assume a humanoid form at will. Most elves are derived from terrestrial mammals, but there’s at least one community that favours octopuses and squid as its root stock.

Goblins were created by alchemy as servants for an evil wizard, but immediately stole their own formula and rebelled. New goblins are brewed in big brass cauldrons full of exotic reagents; each village keeps a single cauldron in a central location, and emerging goblings are raised by the whole community, with no concept of parentage or lineage. Sometimes they like to add stuff to the goblin soup just to see what happens – there are a lot of weird goblins.

Halflings reproduce via tall tales. Making up fanciful stories about the adventures of fictitious cousins is halfling culture’s main amusement; if a given individual’s story is passed around and elaborated upon by enough people, a halfling answering to that individual’s description just shows up one day. They won’t necessarily possess any truly outlandish abilities that have been attributed to them – mostly you get the sort of person of whom the stories could be plausible exaggerations.

To address the obvious question, yes, this means that dwarves have no cultural notion of childhood, at least not one that humans would recognise as such. Elves and goblins do, though it’s kind of a weird childhood in the case of elves, while with halflings it’s a toss-up; mostly they instantiate as the equivalent of a human 12–14-year-old, and are promptly adopted by a loose affiliation of self-appointed aunts and uncles, though there are outliers in either direction.

Reblogging so I remember. Character research. I’ve made a half-elf, with a drow mother & half-drow father, raised in drow society particularly in a temple of Lolth. They worship a different goddess currently in the campaign, but it’s good know their roots better.

The Descent of the Drow

Requested by @adrainea for the lore giveaway.

Part 5 of 5: Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes & Beyond

So where are we now? On May 18th/ May 29th 2018 (digital version/hard cover) WOTC released Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes, and along with it some changes to this tale. Here’s my summary relevant to drow, though I highly encourage looking at the supplement its self. There’s much more to add, but I’m only including what is relevant to the question: What did dark elves do to become drow/banished?

Elves were formed from drops of Corellon’s blood when he fought a godly war against the orc god Gruumsh. Corellon was like “oh neat” and adopted these blood spawned beings as his children

He favoured a few of them and made them the Seladrine gods. One of them would become Lolth.

Corellon had no fixed form, Corellon could be a flock of birds, a woman, a man, a river. Like Corellon, elves too had no fixed true form and could choose.

One day Lolth picks a form, names herself Lolth and tells the other elven gods that they should choose fixed forms as well to have power and impact on the universe.

The some elven gods agree, some do not. Elves become divided into those who agree with Lolth and those who agree with Corellon.

Lolth tries to kill Corellon for her usual reasons, fails, Corellon finds he can no longer trust his children and casts out ALL elves from Arvandor – they get pushed into the Feywild where they now have fixed forms, even those who stood by Corellon. (?)

The elves decide to explore Toril and other lands because they are naturally curious and emotional creatures, hungering for new experiences after the loss of their “father.”

Some elves continue to worship Corellon, some Lolth, some other gods.

image

[I get on a plane in several hours so no time for arts. Please enjoy this art “ Temple of Lolth “ by Julian Kok, featured in Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes] Closing thoughts:

Drow who repent can be gifted this ability to change form (biological sex) after a long rest. New lore states that all elves worshipped Lolth, not just the Ilythiiri. But they stopped and it was the dark elves who did not pull back. Whether this means all dark elves or only the Ilythiiri, is unclear.

If there’s a core thing to take away from MTOF it’s that: Drow aren’t born evil, not by race. They have a history, culture and environment that encourages certain behaviours. Remove them from that environment and they have a chance to change. If a drow, orc, or goblin, where born say in a good aligned city, grew up with humans, they would pretty much act as a human would, think and have values as their peers would. They’d look different, sure, their biology would have some effects, yeah. But they aren’t “born evil”. If you’re playing a drow (born in the Underdark into drow culture) it’s likely they will struggle with this inner darkness for a very long time, perhaps forever. And that’s fine. Such things are what make drow so thrilling to play. Despite being set up from birth to be drawn to darkness, they may overcome it, or use it in productive ways. I’ll leave you with this Paarthurnax quote, because I adore it and it’s relevant. “What is better ? to be born good or to overcome your evil nature through great effort ?” ~ Paarthurnax, Skyrim Be well friends, and may your characters be as varied and complex as you wish them to be.

So cool! This is such an interesting take.

Rethinking Drow and Lolth

image

So I’ll preface this by acknowledging that while highly problematic, the Drow in their current state, canonically, can be an effective and interesting race when handled properly. Instead of plot-derailing gremlins, Drow PCs can be cunning and powerful additions to an adventuring party. Similarly, a shrewd DM can bring an even greater level of suspense to an adventure if they’re willing to portray their Drow NPCs with a level of dark prudence, making them cunning, savage warriors and Machiavellian criminal masterminds instead of asshole chronic backstabbers.

However, I’ve also seen some really great discussions on rethinking how most dwarves, orcs, and ’monster’ races in general are portrayed in gaming and storytelling, and I’d like to posit that the same can be done with dark elf races. Here are a few of my ideas, and I’d love to hear others from fellow gamers and world-builders. (Screen cap taken from Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir.)

Cool!

some dnd backstory ideas that give your character a reason to leave home that isn’t “everyone in my family died.” (just to say: i have nothing against those backstories (i use them a lot), but its fun to mix it up!)

family/friends/personal

someone close to you is sick. you need to adventure to find a cure

someone stole something important from you and you need to find it

you’ve received a message from a long lost relative and are trying to find them

someone that you love has been kidnapped (maybe you have to earn money to pay a ransom or complete some deed…)

adventuring runs in the family! everyone is expected to complete one quest in their lives

your family/culture sends people out to complete certain tasks when they reach a certain age as a rite of passage

another player’s character saved you in the past so you feel indebted to them and travel with them, protecting/aiding them

there’s a magical drought in your hometown and you have to fix it

your hometown doesn’t have a lot of jobs so you have to travel and send money back home

some childhood friends and you made a “scavenger hunt” where you try and complete a checklist of certain tasks (ie. defeat a barbarian in hand to hand combat, steal x amount of gold, slay a dragon, etc) in an allotted amount of time

quests/jobs

a god/patron has sent you on a quest to do something for them

you’ve been hired by someone to complete a task (and you get sucked into the big adventure along the way)

you’re on a quest for knowledge. maybe it’s to learn the best ways of fighting, maybe it’s something more academic related

your priest received a vision from your god and they sent you on a quest

you’re writing a book about the world and different cultures and you need first hand experience

you’ve found every map you’ve come across is shitty, so you decide to become a cartographer and make your own

you’re a detective who helps solve crimes and need to travel to solve a particular case

you’re a collector of a certain object and travel across the land to find it

you’re apart of an adventuring academy and have to complete a quest to graduate

you’re an artisan and you travel with your wares, trying to sell them. alternatively, you’re trying to spread word of your business and gain new business partners

you worked at a tavern your whole life where an old bard would sing songs of their adventuring party and that inspired you to go and do some adventuring of your own

feel free to add some of your own!

Aww

ok you know that ‘make the princess laugh and you can have her hand in marriage’ thing?

imagine so many come in.

they try, so hard, to make her laugh.

she just sits there, morose, ignoring every man who tries to coax a smile.

one day she’s sitting on the balcony. she just looks so sad.

of course that little thief tries to make her smile.

a girl who goes through the (semi public) royal gardens every day to pick flowers, even though technically only the royal family is allowed to do that.

she sees the princess while she’s picking them up to sell on the streets, and she’s just… so sad. this princess needs someone to cheer her up.

and she tries. she’ll do silly dances when she comes in, she’ll bring up frogs from ponds and act out comedies, she’ll make flower crowns and exaggerate just how hard it is.

the first few days, the princess doesn’t even look at her.

then she starts noticing. this girl, trying so hard to cheer her up. she probably hasn’t even heard of the hand in marriage thing, she doesn’t know she’s trying so hard for nothing.

but she does it anyway.

one day, the princess starts talking to her as she does these things. “You do know that it’s useless?”

“What?” the thief says. “No way! I’m going to get you to laugh!”

“The best jesters in the kingdom have tried, don’t bother,” the princess declared pessimistically, staring down at the girl.

Then the thief puffs out her chest, “Of course I am! I’ll find the best jokes, even better than the jesters have found! I’ll… fight a fire breathing dog for them!”

There’s no laugh, but the corner of the princess’s mouth twitches. it’s sad how she thinks she can make me laugh…

the girl keeps trying, for years, making more silly stories and trading flowers for jokes rather than food or money. the princess slowly realizes the girl is getting closer and closer, asking her for responses in knock knock jokes and encouraging her to speak when she wouldn’t respond immediately.

the princess eventually had the girl hanging from her balcony, holding on tight to the rail and feet wedged between the columns, grinning and telling yet another iteration of that already old chicken joke.

the princess has been smiling, slightly, but she mostly just looks unresponsive. the girl is happy, it’s better than looking so sad, like she had been years before.

the girl moves on to puns, pointing at the exotic lunch the princess was eating. “Why do the melons have to go to get married? They cantaloupe!”

“You only know that word because of me,” the princess snarks, but there’s a small smile there, a bit of happiness. This little flower girl, this thief has grown into an amazing friend, a wonderful person who genuinely just wants to help. she doesn’t know of the deal, only nobles and jesters could know, not the commonfolk.

“Well, it makes quite the pun,” the girl says, proud of her joke. a smile! what an accomplishment!

“Say…” she continued, “What would you call a princess who got swept up in conversation a thief?” she pulled a flower out of her pocket, waving it in front of the princess’s face. the princess’s eyes crossed to see the flower before they rolled at the obvious setup.

though, it was interesting that it obviously involved them.

“I don’t know,” she admitted, sighing in preparation for another horrible pun. “What?”

the girl grinned. “A pretty theft!” she exclaimed, ticking the flower against the princess’s nose.

the princess froze for a moment, stunned. she had been complimented a million times over, called graceful by etiquette instructors, been called beautiful by many a suitor, been called wonderful by her mother before… she stopped thinking about that.

she had never been called pretty.

she burst into laughter at the commonplace compliment, as if she was some sort of milkmaid who had somehow grown up to be good looking! it was ridiculous, the notion, yet somehow it had her blushing all the same.

then she suddenly stopped, realizing what she’d done.

the flower thief was staring at her in amazement, a blush of her own speckling her cheeks. her flower tilted out from in front of the princess’s nose, as if it had it’s own amazement.

“Wow…” the girl breathed. she’d never heard something so beautiful in her life.

The princess was silent, knowing what she had just done. She had just laughed for the first time in years.

The girl may not have been aware of the arrangement, but she was quickly swept up in it. A maid had heard the laughter and burst in, to find the thief and the princess, caught up in each other’s eyes, reveling in what had just happened.

The wedding was beautiful, a flower filled affair, a wonderful nod to how it happened. The king was so happy to see his daughter with someone who made her smile for once, tearing up as they were wed.

The princess’s laugh was still incredibly rare. She still had a hard time smiling. But a well timed joke from the girl– no, her wife– and another flower that had a hidden meaning behind it, than maybe, maybe you would hear it.

After all, the princess had finally laughed with the one she loved.

Wow this is incredible!! :)

a hypothetical d&d party

The bard is mute.

It’s not the first thing people notice about her, usually.  The first thing is generally that she’s young, and female, and lovely–the first thing people notice about their entire party is that they’re all young, and female, and lovely, and that’s gotten more than one would-be thief or mugger in far over their head when they haven’t noticed the the paladin’s hammer or the ranger’s axe.  It comes up rather quickly though, often enough.  Whoever heard of a bard who can’t sing?

She plays a lute, mostly, or a lap-harp made of shell and sinew, string instruments she can pluck while she smiles in secret and watches everyone around her.  She dances quick, except when she’s tired, when she’s scared, when she forgets to remember the feet at the ends of her legs.

She doesn’t tell her story to strangers, but enough of the other girls have learned to sign by now, and it’s easy enough to sketch out the outlines of the old bargain: the voice, the prince, the witch, the thousand shards of glass she walked upon on her way up the beach, the look in her sea-green eyes when they travel too near water.  The thousand shards of glass she walked upon when she left the palace, and turned back towards the sea to throw herself upon the rocks, and then made her way up the road inland, and kept walking.

.

The warlock is beautiful and mild and self-effacing and shy, is tidy and generous and charming.  She’s small with herself in exactly the right way to shout abuse to the half of her party who knows how to recognize that same look in the mirror in the morning.  The bird on her shoulder is too small, too bright, too sweet for a real warlock’s familiar.  The knife at her belt is sharp enough for anything that needs doing, though, cooking or otherwise.

Her fae patron visits sometimes, in the quiet hours between dusk and midnight, a sweetly old godmother made of moonlight and shadow.  She’s kind to the whole lot of them in her own chaotic way, free-handed with transmutations and illusions that break halfway through the evening, for better or worse.  She once spent three hours around their campfire drinking brandy and gossipping outrageously about the Feywild and teasing the wizard into fits of laughter.

She’s never told the story of how she met the warlock’s mother, or what debt was owed there, and the warlock doesn’t know herself.  It was never meant to be a debt paid in power and violence and the deft will-sapping enchantments the warlock weaves now, but, well.  The prince wasn’t meant to be cruel, the warlock says.  The palace was meant to be warmer than the fireplace cinders in her stepmother’s house.  The faerie was meant to be saving her from her lot, not throwing her into something worse.  The power’s an apology of sorts.

.

The wizard is awkward and joyful and nervous.  She has no fear of heights or small places, which just stands to be expected, she says, after all those years in that little tower, and she’s got no skill at lying or even edging around the truth at all, which is why she isn’t in the tower any more in the first place.  She says too much or too little or the wrong thing entirely, always, but the most well-socialized member of the whole party is the ranger who walks around with a dire wolf at her hip, or maybe their mute bard, so who are any of them to judge.

There was nothing to do in that tower but read, and brush her hair, and sort through the witch’s endless stockpile of dried herbs and potions ingredients, and watch out the window as woodcutters and hunters and princes rode by, and dream.  The reading was more interesting than the dreaming, most of the time, and the witch didn’t mind it as much when she talked about it.  She never bothered to actually use any of the magic in the witch’s books until the thing with the prince and the haircut and the desert, which she’s told them all about in all the detail they could ever ask for, but most of the girls get uncomfortable when she starts talking about princes.  It’s a little easier if she just starts rambling about conjuration and abjuration and illusion theory, about the 400-year-old history of a city that doesn’t exist any more, about the proper grammatical structure of Celestial, until maybe one of the quiet ones finally answers back.

Her hair is too short.  She keeps an illusion up over it whenever she can, while it grows back slowly, tickling the side of her face and the back of her neck and leaving her head too light and unbalanced.

.

The ranger doesn’t care about princes, which makes one of them at least.  Then again, the ranger doesn’t trust anyone, really, prince or no, not wolves or monsters or the men who kill them.  She more or less trusts the rest of them by now, mostly, when the wind blows in the right direction.

She wears bright red in the middle of the woods and it shouldn’t help her slip into the shadows half as easily as it does, but most beasts can’t see color and red’s just another shade of gray if the light’s low enough.  She never uses her axe against trees.  She doesn’t need to.  She can find a path through any brush without it.  She picks flowers when she finds them, and tucks them into the other girls’ hair.

Her wolf’s mother killed the man who taught her to use the axe, and the man who taught her to use the axe killed that wolf’s mate before that, and the mate had an old woman’s blood on his teeth when it happened.  The ranger’s blade found the wolf’s mother’s throat.  The ranger’s mother sent her out into the woods in the first place.  It’s not as though anywhere is really safe, cottage or forest, axe or teeth.  One of these days maybe her wolf will turn and go for her in return, and maybe one of these days her axe will be faster and maybe it won’t.  In the mean time, there’s flowers and berries and pastries and enough game to keep everyone sated, for a little while.

.

The paladin’s hair is raven black and her skin is chalky as a corpse.  She’s not undead, mostly.  The undead are her job.  She knows that much.

She was sweet, once (they were all sweet, once) but apples are bitter now and so is she, and there’s judgment to lay out in the world.  Her grip on her warhammer’s all wrong–she holds it like a mining hammer, but it hits as hard as it needs to.  Her armor’s all dwarven make, and her shield’s black and red and white like snow.

She was sweet once, and frightened, and when she says it quietly around the campfire in the night when none of them can quite make out the glimmer of understanding on each others’ faces, everyone still nods.  She took a bite of poison and somebody left her a full year in a glass coffin of Gentle Repose, dangling on the edge of the Raven Queen’s domain while all the other newly-arrived dead passed by and faded away.  She woke up to somebody’s lips and hands and skin on her lips and her hands and her skin.  She doesn’t like princes.  She doesn’t like necromancers.

She likes sunlight, and summer, and colors that aren’t black and white and red.  She likes the way the bard grins when she whirls into a dance, and the look in the warlock’s eye when she sets her feet to say no, and the wizard’s laughter on high with a Fly spell, and the ranger’s gentle fingers braiding flowers into everything she can touch.

Oh wow! 😮 that’s awesome story. I never heard of it before but it’s super cool. So definitely reblogging so I can help share it.

A Connecticut Yankee...a kid...that's all well and good but we really don't talk enough about the werewolf in King Arthur's court

This is not a shitpost — in Le Morte D'Arthur, Sir Thomas Malory makes mention of “Sir Marrok, the good knight that was betrayed with his wyf, for she made hym seven yere a wer-wolf”. Of course, Malory lifted the tale of the werewolf knight straight outta “Bisclavret,” which is one of the Twelve Lais of Marie de France. And it is…wild. There’s also “Melion,” an anonymous Breton lai which along with “Biclarel” is believed to have evolved from the same source as “Bisclavret”. In this post we’re gonna refer to the protagonist as the “knight” or the “wolf-knight” and tell a somewhat composite tale.

(A note: this takes place well before commonly established werewolf lore, which crystallized thanks to Universal’s The Wolf Man. Curt Siodmak wrote all that stuff about the full moon and silver bullets in 1941 so well that our common imagination accepted it as ancient fact.)

So anyway our guy is a knight who disappears for a couple nights a week and his wife is like ?????? dude ??????? where ??? do you ???? go ??????

And my dude is like “babe I love you but I can’t tell you because you won’t look at me the same” and she’s like “I am your wIFE you better tell me right quick or otherwise have a good nose for almonds in your oatmeal” (jk she doesn’t say that because if she did he might’ve gotten a little foreshadowing of her treachery, but alas, our man was a sucker)

So the knight tells her he’s a werewolf, and on the nights he disappears he’s wolfing around the countryside and his wife is like !!!!!!!!!! on the inside but makes sure her face is only 🤔 on the outside

(Mind you, Marie de France goes into how the wife is grossed out because she shared her marriage bed with a beast, which has some interesting implications but we’ll get to those later)

She starts digging about his transformation until he explains how in order to return to his human shape, he *needs* to put his human clothes back on or else he’ll be stuck as a wolf, at which point wifey is 👀👀👀👀

Wifey’s like, “but if ur in wolf form, how do u remember where u put ur clothes lol” and the knight’s like, “no no, I retain my human mind even in wolf form and besides, I always put them under this one rock outside this cave”

now bear in mind he’s never been able to talk about this to anyone so he’s pouring his heart out about his deepest secret which he kept even from his wife & I know we’re all pretty used to medieval repression but imagine how it must have felt to share this secret at long last 😥

So to recap:

knight: 🤵🏻🛡🐾🌕🐺🤫😅😍♥️💐 wifey: 👰🏼💭🤢🤔👀🧐💡💡👔💍🔪🔪🔪

Our knight is like “yeah so I was born this way and it’s just a part of who I am and whew it’s kind of a relief to finally be talking about it with someone”

Wifey nods along 🤔🤔🤔 because she’s had a💡moment and is 🍳 up a plan…
