Geology of Natural Disasters and How to write them into your fictional universe.

So, you want to write about a natural disaster to advance your plot and torture your players/characters even more? Let me tell you how, accurately.

I feel like unless it is a volcano, natural disasters are a pretty slept on plot drivers, and some of them are really cool and unique! Today, I will talk to you about land slides, earthquakes (And earthquake related disasters), and volcanoes.

Landslides: Probably one I see the least in stories, but one that would be incredibly interesting to write into a plot where they believe in curses. Landslides can happen along ocean bluffs, slightly hilly areas, and highly mountainous areas, this means it is something that can happen in most landscapes. But what can trigger a landslide? Mostly all you need to trigger a landslide could be just abnormally large amounts of rain, excessive deforestation (with a little bit of rain), or an earthquake. If you don't want to use deforestation or an earthquake as a catalyst, a really cool indicator that the land is slipping and may be prone to a collapse is J hooked trees.

Geology Of Natural Disasters And How To Write Them Into Your Fictional Universe.

This indicates that there is soil creeping slowly over time, and it may lead to a major landslide.

2. Earthquakes: Probably one of the easiest things to write, earthquakes can happen anywhere, but they are most common in places that are tectonically active areas. There are about three types of environments you can expect earthquakes to be common. The first is just rugged mountains, if your landscape looks like this, you should write in earthquakes. Associated hazards could be landslides, avalanches, and large falling rocks.

Geology Of Natural Disasters And How To Write Them Into Your Fictional Universe.

The next landscape could be a thin mountain range, next to the ocean, very scenic, but very dangerous. Essentially, I am describing a subduction zone environment.

Geology Of Natural Disasters And How To Write Them Into Your Fictional Universe.

Earthquakes in these areas could equal a couple different associated disasters. Scenario one: A very large earthquake happens, and the ocean begins to recede. This is a tsunami, enough said. If you are writing a tsunami though, please, please, do not write it as a large wave, thank you. Also, a common way people are hurt by tsunami's are from them going into the ocean because they don't understand a tsunami is going to happen.

Geology Of Natural Disasters And How To Write Them Into Your Fictional Universe.

Scenario two: A large earthquake happens, your characters are in a valley and suddenly the ground begins to liquify as the ground shakes, once the shaking stops, the ground becomes solid like nothing ever happened, except everything has suddenly sunk into the now hard ground. This is called liquefaction and it typically happens in areas that have loose dirt or lots of saturated soil.

Geology Of Natural Disasters And How To Write Them Into Your Fictional Universe.

Scenario three: There are a lot of small earthquakes, they do not cause a lot of damage, but you begin to notice that one of the isolated mountains has a plume rising. Earthquakes can indicate lava moving underground and the filling of magma chambers.

Geology Of Natural Disasters And How To Write Them Into Your Fictional Universe.

The next environment that can host lots of earthquakes would be regions that have a lot of really deep valleys and small mountain ranges (not cone volcanoes), but overall seems pretty flat.

Geology Of Natural Disasters And How To Write Them Into Your Fictional Universe.

This indicates a transform fault like the San Andreas. If you want to hint at there being earthquakes in the area, you can show fence posts that are suddenly several feet out of line at a dilapidated farm or something similar.

Geology Of Natural Disasters And How To Write Them Into Your Fictional Universe.

(These earthquakes are different because they are cased from sideways movement, not an up-and-down movement this hint can only be used for this environment). Volcanoes would not be found here, but liquefaction and landslides could still occur here.

4. Volcanoes: If you thought earthquakes had a lot of information, volcanoes do too. First you have to ask yourself, what kind of volcano you want to have, what kind of eruption style? So lets break down the kind of eruptions you can have and what their landscapes look like. Hawaiian Shield volcano: This will produce a smooth fast lava, the landscape typically is pretty flat, but there will be small cones and the rocks can have a ropey or jagged texture and the rocks will be almost exclusively black to dark red.

Geology Of Natural Disasters And How To Write Them Into Your Fictional Universe.

Stratovolcanoes: These will be solitary mountains, typically, that look like perfect cones (Picture shown in earthquake section). These will have large ash cloud eruptions and pyroclastic flows, they may have some lava, but typically most damage is done from the pyroclastic flows (think Pompeii). Some hints of these, other than describing the cone features (which can be hidden by other mountains), would be to talk about petrified wood! Trees can get fossilized in the ash and I imagine it would be very strange to find this rock that clearly looks to be a piece of wood, but its a rock. Subcategory- Calderas: Used to be a large stratovolcano, but they erupt so explosively that the entire cone collapses and creates a basin.

Geology Of Natural Disasters And How To Write Them Into Your Fictional Universe.

There are a lot of kinds of volcanoes out there, so forgive me for just putting an infographic and then talking to you about these really rare types of eruptions that I feel like people should know about.

Geology Of Natural Disasters And How To Write Them Into Your Fictional Universe.

Okay lets talk about blue lava (kind of) and black lava

Geology Of Natural Disasters And How To Write Them Into Your Fictional Universe.

You will notice the lava is still red in the middle of this image, during the day these would look like a normal eruption, but at night the burning sulfur would make it appear blue. Some cool features other than this, would be that any water in the area would become very acidic and burn the skin due to sulfuric acid. This would again be really cool if you are trying to describe a 'cursed' land.

Black lava: This happens only in the east African rift I believe, but it is a carbonatite lava, but if you are writing in a rift valley (where the continent is tearing apart to form a new ocean) this might be a cool feature. The lava will cool white and will quickly erode, it makes for a very alien landscape!

Geology Of Natural Disasters And How To Write Them Into Your Fictional Universe.

Anyway as always, this is supposed to be an introductive guide for the basics of writing geology to create cool landscapes/features into dnd or fictional universes, if you are a geologist please understand my oversimplification of tectonics, I didn't want people to run away.

PSA to fan creators who don't have a lot of regular contact with children: They are almost always bigger than you think. A 1-year-old baby may already be walking. A toddler is likely already hip-high. A 10-year-old may already be taller than at least one of their parents. A 14/15 year old may already have reached their adult height.

Just daydreaming about your stories or what you want to write truly is being productive despite what your brain demanding immediate results to and gratification from your productivity might tell you, like it lets you work through details, figure out what you want, rotate scenes around and change things up if you're still unsure about them, have a little fun without committing just quite yet, even if it's not being written down, it is being processed in your mind nonetheless and it is contributing to future productivity and the eventual endgame of wherever you want to be going with it all, even if you're not physically interacting with or creating or consuming something at the moment, you are creating thoughts, coming up with the blueprints, and maybe those blueprints won't always come to fruition, but maybe one day they'll help you build something great, or maybe they just brought you some joy or intrigue at the time and that's fine too, and etc, etc, so yeah, let yourself daydream more

Potential Virus Risk on AO3 Comments

Hey everyone. So, I wanted to make a post about something I've seen in AO3 comments recently and I wanted to let y'all know so you can be careful.

Today, on two separate fics of mine, I got comments from guests with different names that had what looks like a key smash followed by a weird link. They looked like this:

Potential Virus Risk On AO3 Comments
Potential Virus Risk On AO3 Comments

Now, it is possible that these are legit comments and these links lead to nothing bad. But, in my experience, this looks like a classic phishing scam or a link to a virus. Honestly, I never open links I see online unless I know for sure I can trust the source. And even then I'm a bit hesitant, since I know that accounts can be hacked. I actually deleted the first email and comment immediately and didn't really think about it again. However, after getting another comment that was almost identical but from a guest with a different name, it makes me think that this might be something bad.

So, if you see these kinds of comments, unless you know exactly who sent it, I'd recommend just deleting them and not clicking on the links. Honestly, even if you know who sent it, I'd still be careful just in case they got hacked. If someone wanted to send you a legit link, they would probably do it with some kind of comment beforehand saying what the link actually leads to. This seems to me like they're trying to prey off curiosity and it can lead to some nasty stuff. Since I know some AO3 writers and readers follow me, I thought I'd post about it here. Similarly, if you see a comment like this on someone's fic, maybe don't click on it either. Again, I can't guarantee this is anything bad, since I definitely did not click on the links, but it's better to be safe than sorry. If y'all could reblog this to spread the word, I'd appreciate it.

Anyway, be careful out there guys! I got burned a few too many times as a kid, so I'm extra careful with links and things now, ha.

EDIT: Apparently, these links are indeed malicious. I checked them in an online link checker, and it detected one malicious source from the link in the second message, but 12 malicious sources in the link from the first message. So, it's pretty clearly a virus or phishing scam. Please be aware!

this might be weird to ask, but how do I critically look at another person's writing and implement what I like in their writing in my own writing? I've been having trouble improving in my writing, and frankly Im not sure how to go about doing that, even. It's easy to see what I like about another person's writing, but hard to pinpoint exactly why...

THIS IS NOT WEIRD TO ASK. It is, in fact, the most important question EVER.

How to Read Like a Writer

Re-read. If you get halfway into a chapter and think, Wow this chapter is super creepy–I wonder how they did that. Or get to the end of a book and think, I feel the poignancy of the fragility of human life in an inherently volatile economic system–I wonder how the writer made me feel that way… Go back and re-read that shit.

Read slowly. When you read like a reader, you read pretty fast. When you go in for your second, or third, or fourth re-read of a passage, chapter, or book that you want to know more about, read it slowly. Really. Slowly.

Read for technique, not content. Readers read for content (”In this paragraph, Damien gave Harold a classified envelope.”). Writers read for technique. (”In this paragraph, the writer made me feel curious about the contents of the envelope by giving sensory details about its appearance and weight.”)

Ask the right questions. They usually start with HOW: How did the writer make me feel? How did they accomplish that?

Read small. Did a chapter make you feel sad? Find out WHERE EXACTLY. What paragraph, sentence, or WORD did it for you? Was it a physical detail? A line of dialogue? A well-placed piece of punctuation? Stories are made of words and sentences. Narrow it down.

Practice. Reading like a writer is a skill that takes time to develop. Over time, you’ll get better at it!

How about y’all? Anything to add to this list? I made it off the top of my head so I’m sure I’m forgetting something. What have been your experiences with learning to read like a writer?

Hope this helps!

Kudos vs. Hits on AO3

Back in early 2017 I had a conversation with friend and fellow writer @pushtheheart about reader engagement on AO3. We’d noticed that, particularly on longer fics, kudos rates drop pretty sharply at a certain point and never really pick up again. Add to that, most of the comments on a new chapter tend to come in those first 24-48 hours after posting. Beyond that, you’re probably only going to see more if you’ve got one of those rare and marvellous spirits that binge-reads and leaves multiple comments as they go. This can feel pretty discouraging, particularly if you’re working hard toward the completion of a bigger project. It can seem like nobody is interested in what you’re doing now that you’re 20 chapters and three years in. Going on the assumption that the answer wasn’t simply, “we suck”, I started tracking kudos vs. hits over time on my longfic to look for trends. I don’t have any data previous to posting chapter 9 of 30, as the idea didn’t occur to me until then, but what I gathered after that was really interesting. I’m sharing it here for anyone else who enjoys data and is curious about this kind of thing!

But first, a note on engagement and expectations…

If you’ve ever put content on the internet you’re probably aware of the “1% rule” or “90-9-1″. Basically, it means the vast majority of people lurk and <10% will engage with the content they consume. For every 10 hits, you’ll get one engagement in the form of a like, kudos, a share, etc. Comments are a deeper level of engagement (community participation) so you’ll cut that down another 10:1. As an example, let’s say you put up a blog post that gets 1500 hits. Average-to-above-average engagement will see it get around 150 likes and 15 comments. I wanted to see if this was true for fic as well. And in general this does seem to be the case – with a few caveats.

This rule only really applies to fics with <10′000k hits. Once you cross that line, kudos drops sharply. There’s another sharp decline at 20′000 and, while I don’t expect to ever hit this mark, I imagine the same can be said for 30′000 or 40′000. I think this is likely due to established readership. The longer the fic is, the less people are likely to hop in unless it’s been personally recommended to them - most of your readers are already subbed. Eventually you’ll reach a point where the vast majority of engagement is made of these people: invested readers who have already left their kudos and their comments back when they first subscribed.

In the old days of Newsgroups and alt.creative it was customary to leave comments on every chapter. There was no such thing as hit counts and likes so this was the only way to let someone know you read it. That’s not the case anymore. My working theory is that this is influenced by social media. It’s trained people to equate ‘many comments’ (or simply just high engagement) with ‘stalking’ because that kind of behavior on other mediums, like Facebook or Instagram, tends to raise eyebrows. As a result people are a little more gun-shy about leaving a bunch of comments.

Here’s the data from my fic, Roses Where Thorns Grow. The Dragon Age fandom is in limbo right now as the last major chapter of the series came out in 2015 and we’re all sitting around awaiting the release of the next… so there’s not a ton of activity. DA fandom hit its peak in around 2014/2015. Many of the popular artists and authors have moved on, and it’s not really a particularly big or active community by comparison to mega-fandoms like The 100 or MCU or (apparently) Hockey RPF.

image

(Pic fixed, previous did not include kudos data for April-to-June of 2021)

The most obvious jump was when the pandemic hit and lockdown began. I don’t believe it had anything to do with the content of my fic or the posting schedule, it was a matter of people turning to AO3 to soothe their cabin fever. AO3 actually mentioned the same in various tweets and posts at the time!

Engagement spikes of statistical significance occurred in a few places:

1. The completion of “part one” and the beginning of “part two”. I’m not convinced this has to do with the content, as quite a few people later told me they bailed due to the subject matter not being their cup of tea. Rather, I think this is because of the soft ‘complete’ status. A lot of people refuse to read in-progress fic. Though I personally find that baffling. You’re missing so much good stuff!

2. Related, finishing the fic. Those in the above category tend to wait until something is done to leave their kudos.

3. A smut chapter. This is self-explanatory. Bioware fans are horny-ass motherfuckers.

3b. It’s worth noting at this point that posting outside of the weird AO3 update notification void of 12am-5am UTC also saw a difference exclusively in comments/hits on new chapters. It didn’t compare to these other spikes, but is absolutely worth keeping in mind. If you’re a night owl like me wait until after 5am UTC to post your updates. More information on this phenomenon can be found on @jenroses‘ post about it, here.

4. By far the biggest and most significant jump: breaching page two of the pairing tag.

Nothing impacted by engagement more than this. Not being shared on Reddit, not story content, size, update speed or regularity, not self-promotion, not my own community engagement, nothing. It was so significant I could just about pin it to the day. Once I hit the very bottom of page two of “Female Lavellan/Solas” I got like 25 new followers (finally pushing me over 100), double the notes on my posts, viral spread of several Tumblr posts (I’m counting ‘viral’ as something over 500 notes), more comments, more kudos, more bookmarks, faster comments on new updates, several binge-readers and someone even made me my first fan art ( @nivenor-krosis ILU I think about this every single day).

Now, I have nowhere near the following of the rock star writers in this fandom and never will – it’s taken me like 6 years to amass 120 people – and I’d love to blame that jump on being a nice person or a good writer or something, but the data really doesn’t support that. More than anything else, visibility impacts kudos. And, unfortunately, it seems you have to expect that once you start creeping toward 10k hits, regardless of that visibility, your kudos rate is going to dwindle exponentially.

This data is a big part of why I decided to put up a post highlighting some lesser known authors and pin it to the top of my Tumblr. If you love an author, promote them! Reblog them. Like them. Recommend them. Talk about them. If you’re an author, reblog your own posts 10 times. More! And if you’re a reader who wants to find more really good fic, go past page two of the search results! There are a ton of gems back there that will never see more than a few hundred hits and are incredible reads - you’re missing out!

how do i write when i have adhd and cant even outline the first three chapters:( i always get stuck after three, get bored, and never come back. any advice ?

Writing with ADHD (by a writer w/ adhd)

1. Consume caffeine and/or do cardio for 30min before sitting down to write. Listen to music, a themed playlist perhaps. Do not log onto the internet or have any distractions nearby (books, pets, clutter, food, unfinished projects). Keeping a dohickey like a stress ball around or even a lightweight dumbbell is a decent proxy when your brain craves distraction. Chewing gum can also help you focus.

2. Don’t outline by chapter, I cannot get farther than five or six when I do that. Outline from beginning to end, but make sure to have a middle! Write a synopsis of what happens and break it into chronological chunks. Only outline by chapter once you’ve got a general outline of the whole story, and even then only outline a couple chapters at a time.

3. Write whatever comes to you, but keep it in order in your document. You want to write how your character discovers a secret, but you know that’s not until chapter 20. Write it anyway and title it chapter 20. Do this with every scene you’re inspired to write, then slowly fill in the gaps. If that proves difficult, it’s okay to make the reveal chapter 9 instead and connect everything with [and then this happened] so you’ll know to sew it up later.

4. However short or long the story ends up being, finish it. You can set a goal of 30 chapters, but if 10 is easier finish by chapter ten. Come back (much) later, reread, and add any new ideas you come up with. A short story is sweet! A novella is nice! Train your brain to write longer passages until it can achieve a story of the length you want.

5. (optional) Outlining is for people who can focus, just start writing somewhere and figure it out along the way. I had a very general outline for my longest novel, but mostly I made everything up and ignored it. Maintain focus, know your end goal, and even if you stumble there and take some shortcuts it still counts. Any messiness can be improved in future drafts.

vitiligo notes for artists

I’ve noticed that vitiligo has been becoming more common in art, and I think that’s really cool! But as a person with vitiligo, and an artist, there are few mistakes I’ve noticed in people’s portrayal of the condition that I wanna address.

1. It’s not random. Vitiligo tends to appear more often in specific places, like around the mouth or eyes, the belly button, as well as on the hands and feet. It also tends to be at least a little bit symmetrical.

2. It doesn’t change your eye color. However in some cases it can cause patches of hair to turn white or blonde.

3. It changes over time. As a kid I had tons of vitiligo spots on my feet and legs, but they eventually faded. For a long time I didn’t have any until I developed a spot above my right eye about a year ago. So if you’re portraying a character at different points in their life, their vitiligo should change too.

4. All skin colors can have vitiligo. I’ve noticed on Picrew and other character maker games vitiligo will sometimes only be an option for characters with dark skin. Obviously it won’t be as obvious on light skin, but unless your character is a person with albinism it should still show up.

that’s all I’ve got for now, if I think of more I might make another post :)

artistically-gay’s Hair Tutorial

image

So! before we begin, I wanna state that the program I use is Fire Alpaca, though this tutorial can be applied to different art programs as well! Some brushes and filters may work a bit differently from program to program.

image

First, we need to go over the brush checklist! These are the brushes you’re going to be working with:      - Watercolor 1 (Turn ON size by pressure)      - Watercolor 2 (Turn OFF size by pressure)      - Airbrush

We’ll start off with a base color. A lightish color is the easiest to work with when you start out. A caramel color should work best for practice.

image

You’re going to want to duplicate the color layer. The duplicated layer is where most of the coloring is going to be done. Lock the first layer to make sure you don’t accidentally work on the wrong layer. I’ve had this accident several times and ended up wasting an hour or two.

You’ll need to have an understanding of color theory for this, but I’ll be linking a post at the end that can help give some guidance on shading with the say I do it!

We’ll be shading our caramel-colored strip with a dark red, and making highlights with a light and pale yellow!

image

Take Watercolor 2 and start creating strokes with varying pressure. Try and go lighter with the shading in where you want your highlights to be, and go heavier where the shadows will be.

Using Watercolor 2 gives you a guideline to follow before using Watercolor 1, which is where detailing will come in.

Now you start using Watercolor 1. Try and have it small, since this is the detailing brush and you’re trying to mimic the visuals of having individual hair strands. Remember to have lighter pressure where the highlights will be and heavier where shadows will be.

image

Duplicate this layer again with Watercolor 1, and then repeat this process with your highlighting color, in this case the yellow! After this, you can adjust the opacity oh this layer until you feel satisfied with how the highlights look!

Now it’s time to clip and merge the layers! After this, we’ll be moving on to the final steps, these steps involving the airbrush tool.

image

Returning to our dark red shading color, use the Airbrush tool to place some soft shading depending on your picture’s light source. After that, use the layer filter settings and either apply Multiply or Hard Light, it really depends on your preference*. Adjust opacity to your preference as well.

*personally, I like to use Hard Light more than Multiply.

Repeat this process with your highlight color. Use the layer filter settings and choose either Overlay or Soft Light. Again, you can go with whichever you prefer.

image

And that’s my hair tutorial! Feel free to practice and experiment with this method in any way that you like! I hope that I was able to be of help to the people who were interested!

Here you can find the post I mentioned about shading!

Oh god, please delete the extra spaces between paragraphs in your fics on AO3. Please. I know it takes ages and it’s really annoying to do, but it is an immediate backspace away from your story if I’m on mobile because I get one sentence per page and acres of white space.
