SPOT COLON DESIGN (before Davey…I’m so sorry) including some text from the NY Sun article “The Only Tie-Up in Town” (July 21, 1899) because I feel the need to justify my pink suspender choice.

My design for Spot, like my other designs, is a mix of the movie and the Broadway production. The white shirt and cane come from the movie, the red striped tee and pants come from bway and of course, the pink suspenders come from history!

My personal favourite of the two drawings is him with his cane :)

David having notebooks full of writing in polish, written in perfect cursive. David writing down everything every chance he gets, pockets full of scraps of paper with little notes and poems. David writing little notes in Jack's sketchbook, scratched drawings surrounded with neat poems. David leaving poems for people where they least expect them, wedged into seats and tucked under fabric. David writing down scripture on torn newspapers, humming zemirot on rainy Saturday mornings. David writing to escape the reality he lives in, writing stories where the protagonist is enough for his parents and no love is unrequited.

David starts talking to people in Polish or Yiddish whenever he's mad at them and only stops once they apologize. (He hasn't spoken to Weseil or the Delaneys in English in weeks) The only exception to this is Jack, who he calls kowboju as a pet name, even though Jack has no clue what he's saying.

Hc that Spot is extremely musically gifted. If you put an instrument in front of him, he can probably play it. We know from his introduction in Hard Promises that he can play harmonica, which means he's got to have some knowledge of notes and keys (I gave up on band in 6th grade don't @ me). Music has always been important to the Navy (the harmonica was/is a extremely popular instrument in the Navy because it's compact, low maintenance, and not extremely difficult to play when compared to other instruments). I'd imagine he learned from some sailors at the docks, and one of them gave him the harmonica and taught him how to play and over time as his gotten access to different instruments he's learned to play a lot of them.

hey how long do you think it took jack to stop thinking of himself as francis. to stop calling himself francis in his head, opening his mouth with francis on his tongue when someone asks him his name. to stop scrawling the shape of an F and having to scribble it out — thick dark black to obscure the letter entirely — and write jack in its place. when do you think he stopped being francis and started being jack. do you think he ever really stopped.
