Cole Was Certainly Freaked Out By What Had Happened At The Lake. One Minute, It Felt Like High School

Cole was certainly freaked out by what had happened at the lake. One minute, it felt like high school again-- like they were just hanging out with friends at the lake. Then, whatever the fuck was going on reared its ugly head again, freaked Adam out again. That was the worst part to Cole. He desperately wanted Adam’s second chance at life-- or re-entering into society, whatever-- to be positive. He’d even settle for bearable.

When they’d come away from the shore, Cole had found refuge in the fire. It was starting to get chilly, and he felt like moping alone for a while. Let everyone else talk it out and theorize, but he wanted nothing to do with it. All he could think about was getting out of Hawkins. Clearly, he and Adam had no shot at a normal life here for a multitude of reasons. Their plan had always been to get away, what was stopping them now?

Cole tore his eyes away from the crackling fire as Adam sat down next to him. Despite everything, he smiled at his boyfriend. This felt familiar-- the sensation that Adam was nearby but never too close so as to arouse suspicion. Finally, the point in the night where it was safe to be close again, even if they still had to be on guard.

“Hey,” he echoed, taking the drink with a grateful smile. “It’s really not bad. Maybe I made it all up,” Cole confessed. “And you? Are you okay?” he looked Adam up and down for any sign of injury or distress. Whatever had happened, Adam had been right there, too. “No--” Cole protested quickly, “It’s okay. Really.” Then, quieter, he chanced: “Just... stay with me?”

In the dark, Cole reached over and took Adam’s hand in his own. It was a risk, but he needed the reassurance. After a few moments of silence, words tumbled frantically out of Cole’s mouth: “What if we just got out of here? We could go anywhere, really, just... maybe it’s Hawkins, and it’s time go. Like we always said. Then all of this wouldn’t matter. I can fix everything.” Cole was embarrassed by his pleading tone.

Cole Was Certainly Freaked Out By What Had Happened At The Lake. One Minute, It Felt Like High School

WHO: Adam Richards & @loverboymontgomery

WHAT: A sweet lil fireside check-in

WHERE: Lovers’ Lake

Adam couldn’t begin to explain what had happened to them tonight on the shore. One minute, everything was fun and happy; the closest Adam had felt to normal since coming back. And then the waves had picked up, and he’d not been able to make it back to shore with Cole. Something had grabbed them both - Adam had felt it - but only Cole had gotten marks. None of it made any sense, and Adam was so fucking sick of nothing making sense.

He wished, more than anything, that he could just have normal issues to deal with for five minutes instead of whatever this stuff was.

After they’d made it back to the campsite, Adam had tried to stick as close to Cole as possible without being too clingy. He just needed to know that his boyfriend was okay. It had been scary for both of them, but Cole was the only one to actually get hurt from it. Maybe Adam hadn’t been grabbed as hard?

“Hey,” He greeted Cole later, when most people had drifted back towards the shore or to their tents. “How’s your ankle?” Sitting beside Cole at the fire, he offered him a drink and a small smile. Adam knew that the marks had disappeared from Cole’s leg - another thing he couldn’t explain - but he wasn’t sure if it still hurt. “I can go put some ice from the cooler in a bag, if you want. Or someone might have brought a First Aid kit.” That would have been a good idea for them, honestly.

If Lucas or Max ever found out about this, Dustin would simply die. Well, hopefully not. But he wasn’t exactly eager to go back to hearing Never Ending Story sung at him twenty times a day, thank you very much. You have to appease your genius girlfriend by duetting with her while the world is ending one time, and suddenly that’s all anyone wants to talk to you about. It was annoying.

For that reason, Dustin had given up on singing outside the comfort and safety of his shower until recently. Somewhere along the way, Dustin had begun hanging out at The Music Center with Cole when he wanted to jam out and let loose a bit. He wasn’t sure what exactly made him feel comfortable enough around Cole to sing around him - probably the fact that he would never know about Dustin’s duet with Suzie.

Grinning as he pushed open the shop door, Dustin waved to Cole. “Hey!” He leaned against the counter, glancing over at the piano. “What are you working on now?” Dustin was mostly a pop guy, minus the few metal bands he listened to for Eddie’s sake.

image

xx.

He’d gotten used to Dustin’s drop-ins, and actually looked forward to them. He could count on Dustin coming by once a week, sometimes twice if there was no DnD campaign going on. Dustin was actually a really talented singer, but he never seemed to want to sing around anyone other than Cole. Cole hadn’t figured out why, yet, but he didn’t want to overstep.

Cole went back into the chorus of “Third World Man.” As it ended, he shrugged, not entirely impressed with it yet. He’d been trained in classical piano, and while the skills certainly transferred, he had a harder time converting rock and alternative music to keys. “Just messing around. You like Steely Dan?” he asked.

It was helpful practice for Cole to pick a song at random, listen to it, and recreate it on piano, which is one of the things he liked about Dustin’s visits. It was always a new challenge, and he got feedback from someone else. Plus, by the time they were winding down, it was usually closing time. “What have you been listening to lately?”

lonnie  byers  had  been  everything  that  joyce  had  been  looking  for  as  a  teenager  -  the  pair  got  along  and  had  for  years,  he  was  the  bad  boy..  the  guy  that  all  the  girls  wanted.  and  he  had  picked  joyce  of  all  people.  they  had  something  special  in  the  beginning  and  then  things  started  to  crumble  pretty  quickly.  whilst  joyce  loved  her  little  family  and  loved  being  a  mother,  lonnie  didn’t  seem  to  enjoy  his  role  so  much.  “i’m  sorry  i  put  my  kids  through  dealing  with  him.”  that  was  truly  her  only  regret.  "i  should  have  kicked  him  out  sooner.  he  wasn’t  good  for  anybody.”  she  couldn’t  really  describe  how  happy  she  was  that  cole  didn’t  have  to  experience  that.  the  less?  the  better.

hand  reaches  up  to  touch  his  shoulder,  giving  it  a  small  squeeze.  she  didn’t  know  why  he  was  crying  either  -  but  she  did  understand  it  to  an  extent.  he  was  clearly  worried  about  what  she  might  think.  “you’ve  always  got  us,  cole.”  and  she  meant  it  to.  he  might  not  have  been  related  to  her..  but  he  was  family.  he  would  always  be  family  now.  “i  mean  it.  come  here  whenever  you  need  it.“

and  yet,  a  small  smile  crosses  over  her  lips  at  his  words,  amused  that  he  was  panicking  ever  so  slightly.  “you  don’t  need  to  ask  for  permission.”  head  shakes.  “they  deserve  to  hear  it  from  you.”  they  knew  that  their  father  was  an  asshole.  joyce  sounded  like  a  broken  record  ranting  about  lonnie  at  times.  “so  whenever  you’re  ready  -  whenever  you  want.  i’ll  leave  that  all  up  to  you.  they’re  good  kids,  i  don’t  think  it’ll  take  them  long  to  get  used  to  it.”  or  believe  it,  for  that  matter.

Joycefm:

If Cole knew one thing about the Byers family, it was that Joyce’s boys adored her. And for good reason, obviously. Admittedly he didn’t know much about marriage and even less about raising kids with someone, but he did know that Lonnie being an asshole wasn’t Joyce’s fault as much as it wasn’t Maggie’s. “I don’t think they’d want you to be so hard on yourself,” Cole offered, gently.

With watery eyes, he smiled at her shoulder squeeze. It was weird, how familiar and comforting she felt to him. “Thank you,” he repeated. “And, for what it’s worth, um... same here.” He wasn’t sure exactly what he could offer to their familial unit-- maybe a discount at The Music Center-- but he wanted to contribute if he could. “I mean, they don’t really need another brother, but whatever I can do, you know.”

He smiled, nodding as Joyce spoke. He knew they would be cool about it, but he also worried about like... ruining whatever view of their dad Will and Jonathan had. But, he trusted Joyce. “Okay... yeah. Thank you.” He knew he should stop thanking her, but he really was so relieved to have it out in the open. “I’ll tell them,” he confirmed, growing confident as he got used to the idea. “I’m glad you’re okay with it,” he admitted, sheepishly. “I always wanted a big family.”

“It’s pathetic, isn’t it?” Nancy smiled, knowing how idiotic she sounded. Even when her and Steve first broke up, she swore to herself that she wouldn’t jump into another relationship. It didn’t do her any good the first time… or the second time. Third time’s a charm though, right? “But he’s better than you’d think,” she lied. Thad was just as typical as anyone would expect a guy named Thad would be. Nancy wasn’t particularly fond of him, but for her senior year? She could put up with him. Or maybe she’d get hit with the Wheeler curse and marry him, pop out a few kids, and stay unhappy until death.

Nancy let out a sigh, finishing off her beer. “I’m tired of talking about me,” she groaned, turning to Cole. “Top me off and tell me all things Cole?” She wiggled her cup in front of him, a grin on her face.

xx.

Suddenly Cole felt bad for his relentless teasing of Nancy. Certainly, she was an adult and could make her own decisions about who to date, even if Cole suspected he was an asswipe. “Hey, if you’re happy, don’t listen to me,” he offered her an apologetic smile. “And if you’re not... well, send me a postcard from the Hamptons.”

Cole’s grin matched hers, and he took her cup with a bow. “As you wish, m’lady.” He turned on his heel and dutifully retrieved two new beers. Pouring one into the cup, he chewed on his cheek. All things Cole. “Hmm. What’s there to say? Still studying lit, still sure I’ll be unemployed come graduation,” he shrugged, taking a swig of his beer. “Tell me, how does one figure out what to do with their life?”

lucas caught cole’s eye in the rearview mirror. he hadn’t really thought about it, but steve had been acting a little bit off, now that he did pause to look back on it. he shrugged it off. “maybe he was just freaked out too?” he didn’t think any of them had been acting particularly normally, but given the circumstances, who could blame them?

hawkins had exactly one hospital and it was all the way on the opposite edge of town. luckily, everything in town closed by nine, so they were nearly there as cole answered his question. lucas’ good hand tightened on the steering wheel, just slightly. he wasn’t sure who cole’s best friend was, but he had a bad feeling about it. people didn’t just die in the fire…they were involved with the mind flayer. he pressed his tongue against his teeth and debated keeping it to himself but…well, falling into a grave together kind of made it easier to want to share. besides, he had to tell someone or he was going to explode.

“yeah, uh, nothing like that.” he offered cole a wince, maneuvered the car into the parking lot closest to the emergency room and threw it into park before turning to look at him properly. “just somebody from my past who didn’t like me very much. he’s not even around anymore.” that was putting it mildly. “he was going to run me over with his car, i think. and i couldn’t move. it was….” fucked up. that’s what it was.

image

xx.

Cole nodded slowly, careful of further exacerbating his head pain. Of course Steve was freaked out-- everyone was. He still wondered, though, if Steve was a little... cold. But, whatever, that was by far not the weirdest thing to happen, so it was easy to put out of his head.

So Lucas had a dream-- or vision, whatever they were calling it-- too. Cole wondered what it meant that whoever he was isn’t around anymore. With a frown, Cole shook his head, “That’s horrifying.” He paused, looking for similarities between their visions. “Did it feel... like, super real to you? I don’t know about hallucinations, but I don’t think they usually feel that real.”

Cole couldn’t shake the feeling that it wasn’t just a hallucination, though that’s likely what the ‘reasonable’ explanation should be. He touched Adam, he heard Adam, he even smelled Adam’s fucking cologne. How could that be explained? And if Lucas had one too, then... “Do you think everyone had one? A different vision?”

who: Cole & @willthewize

where: the Byers’ porch!

what: brother reveal (2.0) (semi-sober version)

The day after the Wheeler’s Fourth of July barbecue Cole woke up with a pounding headache and a faint memory of a conversation with Jonathan Byers. But, he’d also woken up in Adam’s arms, and that took precedence. Still, the memory haunted him; Cole couldn’t escape the embarrassment he felt knowing that he’d been noticeably drunk when he told Jonathan they were related. Not his brightest moment.

In truth, he’d wanted to tell Will first-- he’d even tried before, after the camping trip at the lake, but he was too nervous. Cole figured that it might be an easier pill for Will to swallow, since they weren’t close in age like he and Jonathan. He’d fully intended to tell Will right away, Jonathan’s warning to ‘be careful’ ringing in his ears and convincing him that he needed to tell Will before someone else did. But, then the explosion happened and Cole was in the hospital.

At this point, he didn’t know what to expect, and he was certainly worse for for the wear: bruises and cuts still healing, arm in a sling, bursts of pain in his torso from the broken ribs, and the ever-present fear that something worse was going to happen. That something worse might cause him to lose Adam again. And if something worse happened and Cole died (physically or otherwise) before he got to talk to Will, he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself.

So, he filled up his flask-- only for a few bursts of liquid courage-- and drove over to the Byers’ neighborhood. Only, he couldn’t stop in front of the house. Nervous fingers tapping on the steering wheel, Cole looped around the neighborhood once. Twice. Three times. God, he didn’t have the gas money for that, so he parked about five houses down and got out, careful not to bang his ribs or his arm on the car, and began pacing.

About a half hour passed, accompanied by a few more swigs of the stinging liquid, and the dread didn’t go away. So Cole took a deep breath and approached the house... only to see Will sitting on the porch, sketchbook in hand. Had he seen him the whole time? An embarrassed flush gathered on Cole’s cheeks, and he wiped his good hand on his jeans to dispel the sweat that had gathered.

“Hey, man,” Cole greeted, attempting to put on a casual smile. “Got a minute? There’s something I wanna talk to you about,” the words fell out in a jumbled heap, but he was glad he’d said it. That he couldn’t escape from it this time. “I talked to Jonathan a while back and, I just... I thought I should tell you.” Cole studied his sling, picking at the fabric fraying on the edge. “Lonnie’s my dad, too.” Saying it out loud, without copious amounts of beer to numb the feeling, left Cole feeling like he’d ripped a bandaid off. He was exposed, bare, vulnerable to whatever Will’s response would be. He wished desperately that he remembered what Jonathan had said, if only to have some litmus for how this would go.

his thoughts were spiralling, dizzy with how close they suddenly were to one another. a contact high, if you will, eddie thought and nearly chuckled at his own joke that he had cracked, to himself, in his own head. decided against it because he had a strong feeling that that might ruin the mood. and after his love life had been a big heap of, well, nothing, these past few months, eddie was definitely not trying to do anything that could potentially ruin the mood.

eddie watched, enraptured, as cole’s eyes stuck to his lips and is own darted down to cole’s. and man, while he hadn’t taken much notice of him in hgih school, he now wondered why - cole was pretty. like, very pretty. the relevation hit eddie hard, made his breath hitch. shit.

his heart skipped a beat, stopped for a second, he thought, as he felt cole tug on his shirt. he bit his lip as his eyes flicked down to cole’s lips, god, they really had to get out of there, stat. so eddie nodded, hummed in agreement. grabbed hold of his wrist and looked around for a moment before he dragged him off around the corner, pressing him up against a marble pillar.

nervous eyes searching is. “uh…you, uh, sure about this?”

Since Adam had died, Cole had been chasing the feeling-- the euphoria-- of connecting with another. That’s not to say he was looking for a relationship... no, he was too closed off for that. He was looking for a reminder that he was still capable of connection, maybe even love. One day.

And today, this chance encounter with Eddie was exactly the feeling he’d been wanting. He’d always noticed Eddie in school-- how could he not, the way Eddie seemed to fill up every room? But he’d never seen Eddie like this: nervous, but sure. In control. And Cole was loving it.

Cole’s stomach leaped when Eddie took him by the wrist and pressed him against the wall. He could feel the heat coming off of Eddie’s body, he could practically taste Eddie’s words. Fluttering his eyes, Cole looked up at Eddie, hand still gripping the other’s shirt.

“I am. Are you?”

“Definitely not your smartest idea to date,” Nancy agreed. She didn’t even know why she, or anyone, for that matter let Cole behind the wheel. Steve was semi-sober enough to get them around that night, but alcohol just did that to a person. They were all too focused on saving Max and stumbling around to actually make sure anyone was safe. “But it’ll be fine, right? I mean, I’m sure you can take it down to the shop and it won’t be… terrible to fix,” maybe Nancy was too naive. She didn’t know how much cars were really priced at or how much it cost to fix them. Her parents were the ones who handled all of that so it was the one topic Nancy wasn’t knowledgeable in.

Nancy smiled at his comment, a chuckle escaping her lips. Sometimes Cole made her jealous. She always had her head on her shoulders and every move she made was perfectly curated. Whether it be by her parents or her own headstrong nature. Nancy knew what she was doing which was a blessing in its own right, but she never just guessed. She could never be smart enough to just blindly know the right answer. She had to have logic behind it. A reason. “A crooked finger would be kind of cool,” she told him, teasing behind her voice. “But I guess we have to let Bach keep playing.”

“The Wheeler household?” Nancy took another bite from her sandwich and leaned back. “We’re the same as usual. I don’t think I’ve talked to my dad in days, I think we’re working on a new record,” she shrugged. “Oh, wait, you’ll totally freak at this!” She exclaimed, slapping Cole’s shoulder in excitement. “Thad is here. Like, in Hawkins.”

image

xx.

Cole groaned at the mention of the easy fix. In his mind, it should be an easy fix! Not that he was a mechanic, but he wasn’t an idiot. Most of the time... except for when he wrecked the car in the first place. “It will be fine,” he said, in his best attempt at a cheery voice. “But I took it to a mechanic and they quoted me $3,000 to fix it.” Cole ran a hand through his hair, conveniently not mentioning that he’d met her delightful boyfriend right after his stop at the mechanic. “You may be shocked to learn that the Music Center does not pay me enough to afford that,” he joked.

Laughing, Cole wiggled his finger. “Are you suggesting I become Captain Hook? Dramatic, sure, but not entirely practical.” It had always been easy for Cole to relax around Nancy. Maybe it felt comfortable because they’d just been in the same vicinity their whole lives. They certainly were always lumped together by their teachers-- nerd one meet nerd two-- though Cole couldn’t hold a candle to Nancy’s smarts in math or science. “Bach is high praise for someone who hasn’t heard me play since... what... our fifth grade recital?” he laughed, remembering the years Karen had forced Nancy to play piano though it was obvious to everyone else that Nancy hated it.

Cole coughed on a chunk of sandwich at Nancy’s news. Taking a second to swallow and collect himself, he shot Nancy a surprised glance. Oh my God! I totally had no idea. “Really?” he exclaimed. His acting wasn’t great, but it was believable-- or so he hoped. “What is Mr. Hamptons doing slumming it in Hawkins?” he asked, genuinely curious. Why had Thad come all this way?

Cole had been in and out of sleep basically for the last seventy-two hours, as best he could figure. Every time he woke up, Adam was next to him, clasping his hand or resting his head on Cole’s leg. Cole vaguely remembered forcing Adam to go get something to eat the last time he was conscious-- he didn’t feel bad for keeping his boyfriend there with him, but he did feel bad if Adam wasn’t eating.

He hadn’t expected any visitors-- Max had just left, Beth had gone home for the day, and Chrissy hadn’t been allowed outside. When the door opened, Cole didn’t bother looking up; he figured it was someone coming to see Steve, but Cole lifted his gaze in response to the familiar voice. “What, couldn’t stay away from me?” he attempted a joke, though his voice was so weak that it sounded more pathetic than funny.

He had an interesting relationship with Chance-- Cole thought there had always been an element of competition between the two, despite Adam’s reassurance that they were all friends. He’d never quite trusted Chrissy’s brother, much preferring to keep to the sidelines with the cheerleaders rather than fully insert himself into the uber-jock football world. He took a long sip of water, groaning slightly at the motion it required, before responding. “So do you. At least I have a reason.”

Raising a brow at Chance’s expression, Cole nodded slowly. It had been a long time coming, this conversation between Chance and Cole. Since they were never particularly close, they hadn’t talked after Adam’s death, or after Chrissy left. But after both Adam and Chrissy coming back, and then whatever the hell that was on the fourth, Cole sort of anticipated this. “I can talk, yeah. What’s... up?” he asked, cautiously. Just because he’d anticipated this didn’t mean he was prepared for this.

Cole Had Been In And Out Of Sleep Basically For The Last Seventy-two Hours, As Best He Could Figure.

WHO: @loverboymontgomery & chance WHERE: the hospital </3 WHEN: post-carnival

after a day or two of processing on his own, chance knew he had to pick himself up by the boot straps and go tend to the people who needed him.  adam’s death disappearance paired with chrissy’s had made him a ghost but the carnage at the carnival had woken him up. chance was so far from himself, so far from who he used to be…but whatever had happened to that cult in the woods was clearly bleeding into hawkins and chance could either stand by idly or he could try to figure out how to keep himself and his people safe.

did he have even the slightest idea of where to begin in order to make that happen? no. but he figured a visit to the hospital to pay his respects and at least try to get the story straight couldn’t be a bad first step. plus, he had something he needed to return.

chance arrived at the hospital a few minutes after visiting hours started. he went up to the nurse working the check-in desk and he gave her a list of names of people he wanted to see. some people weren’t taking visitors, some already had company, so at the end of his conversation with her, he was told he could go see one cole montgomery.

he wasn’t chance’s first choice, mostly because he wasn’t sure what he’d get, but oh well. it was time to suck it up and be brave. chance followed the signs that led him to cole’s room and once he was there, he gave two warning knocks before opening the door. “yo,” he greeted, standing cautiously by the frame as he let out a deep breath, “you look like shit.” cole had no doubt gotten the worst of it when it came to injuries. at least out of the people he’d seen so far. clearing his throat to ease some of the awkward tension he was feeling, chance slowly approached the chair next to cole’s bed and reluctantly sat down. “can you talk?” he asked, staring at adam’s friend with a twinge of concern, “or does it hurt?”

with his hands gripping the steering wheel, steve stared at cole and thought about how he had almost ran him over. what was with people skateboarding in this town, anyway? he asked to himself as he looked at the other approaching his car. the memory didn’t take long to appear on steve’s mind as he was reminded of what the two had done in the backseat, but he shook it off his mind as he looked at cole as he leaned on the frame of his car. “you really should be careful when you’re skating that thing, you never know who’s behind the wheel… you’re lucky i saw you in time.” he warned, as he shook his head slowly and then motioned his head so the other could make his way inside the car.

“i wasn’t exactly offering a ride, but it’s better if i just drive you there. like i said, maybe next person won’t stop and then you’ll be left bleeding on the road.” he said, rolling his eyes slightly as he waited for cole to make his way inside of his car. steve didn’t mind driving other people around, in fact, he was used to. he was almost always the designated driver when it came to these type of events and it didn’t help that he was one of the few people in the group of people he knew that could actually drive. god forbid he would let max drive his car again, or anyone for that matter. “just get in, we can show up together.” he said with a nod.

Cole put his right hand up as if he were reciting a pledge. "Right hand to God, it won't happen again, Officer Harrington," he promised, with a mischievous gleam in his eye. He knew Steve spent a lot of time with Dustin and Will and all those younger guys, maybe it had transformed him into the dad friend, or something. Anyways, calling a skateboard that thing aged Steve to at least forty in Cole's mind.

Without hesitation, Cole opened the passenger door and slid in, stashing that thing in the backseat. "Well, I appreciate it, really. What can I do to make it up to you?" Just barely, he resisted the urge to add a wink to the tail end of his question. Steve was being nice by offering a ride, and there was no need to torture him about it. "Sounds like half the town will be there. Anyone you're excited to see?" Cole asked, nonchalantly, though he was certainly fishing for information.
