MAX: why would that be a dick move? he's still your boyfriend isn't he?
MAX: [simultaneously] don't think too much about it.
MAX: exactly.
MAX: i'll see you in an hour, loser?
COLE: not thinking about it
COLE: trying not to think about it
COLE: ... see you in an hour
COLE: am I supposed to say over?

āyou better watch it, buddy.ā thad said, jaw clenched, inches from coleās face. it wouldāve been easy to punch him, the other was annoying enough, but he found himself dropping his fist and rather gripping the collar of coleās shirt with both hands.Ā āi donāt fucking want you to buff it out.ā he said, shaking his head,Ā āitās about the principle, the paying for it.ā he listed,Ā āplus i bet you canāt buff for shit.ā thad sincerely doubted a guy who looked likeĀ that when batting his eyelashes knew the first thing about cars. for a split second, he stared at cole. openly, plainly, unapologetically licking his lips for a moment. then a barrier went back up, anger pointed fiercely at cole. thad didnāt have confidence in coleās ability to amend this situation, but he did recognize that he had a knack for getting under his skin.Ā
the longer thad stood there in close proximity, his grip loosened. his breathing remained shallow, and now felt as good of a time as any to reveal āĀ āi already fixed my car.ā he glanced over his shoulder, out of the garage, and out to the street. that car was his life, he had the knowledge on how to fix it, and there was no way he was taking it back out on the street dented, so he did what he had to. when thad looked back to cole, a quick, burning sensation coursed up from his toes and settled at the tips of his red ears. he must have been really mad or maybe, maybe this was something else. thad wasnāt looking to find an answer to that question right now. priorities. jolting cole by his collar, he repeated,Ā ādid you hear me? i already fixed it, pretty boy. are you gonna pay for my time or what?ā
xx.
āCole Montgomery,ā he said, his eyes not leaving Thadās. Clearly, this guy wasnāt going to let it go anytime soon, and Cole knew heād already gotten under his skin. When Thad focused on Coleās lips, he barely resisted the urge to pull Thad in closer. Cole wanted to retort to Thadās comment, but also didnāt want the other to get more defensive-- he didnāt want to hurt the chances of Thad acting on his desire.Ā āIf you say so, guy,ā Cole replied, his voice low.Ā
Heād already fixed his car, so why was he here? Why was he putting up such a big fight? That was as much confirmation as Cole needed. Cole didnāt particularly enjoy Thadās personality, but that had never stopped him from appreciating an attractive man before. Itās not like he was looking for love. As Thad jostled him, Cole leaned closer, leaving mere inches between their faces.Ā āIf you think Iām so pretty, Thad, why donāt you show me?āĀ
goldenboyrichardsā:
Adam couldnāt wrap his brain around Coleās words. There was no way. No way he had⦠because how could he be here now? If that had happened, why didnāt his family say anything? How could they just not remember?Ā
They had left his room exactly the same, down to the dirty clothes littering the floor and the half-drunk can of New Coke on his bedside table. At first, when heād come home and seen that, heād felt odd about it. Like he was a ghost, returning to the place heād felt most comfortable haunting. Maybe⦠maybe there had been some truth to that feeling. But that was just impossible. Right? How could someone be dead for three years, then just come back like nothing had happened?Ā
Adam stopped that train of thought in itās tracks.Ā āNo, I⦠no.ā He said more firmly, shaking his head again. His hands let go of Cole briefly, only for his balled up fists to scrub at his eyes.Ā āI didnāt die, Cole. I didnātā¦ā Adam repeated, voice pleading with Cole. Because he didnāt die. He couldnāt. What did that mean if he did? And what did it mean if he didnāt?Ā āI left. I was in a commune. Iām sorry.ā Adam repeated, voice breaking on his apology.Ā
And then Cole was kissing him, and the distress heād just felt melted away slightly. It wasnāt gone. It was just shoved away to the back of his mind, deep in a dark place where Adam could hold on to it until he felt ready to process something that huge. Adamās arms returned to Cole, wrapping around him and pulling him close. For the first time ever, Adam didnāt really care that they were in a semi-public place. Mrs. Sanders be damned. He kissed Cole sweetly, making up for the three years theyād been apart as best as he could. Adam ached for that time back, but he would take what he could get now. As they pulled away, Adam leaned his forehead against Coleās, sighing at how right it felt.Ā āIām sorry I wasnāt here.āĀ
xx.
Coleās heart leapt into his throat at Adamās pleading tone. He wished he hadnāt said anything, and just let Adam go on believing that heād gone away to a commune. But Cole had never been able to lie to Adam, nor did he ever want to. He knew that, although it was entirely too much to understand, Adam would want to know. Maybe he even needed to know, so he could stop punishing himself forĀ āleaving Cole.ā But only when he was ready, only on his own terms-- Cole felt a pit in his stomach as he remembered Maxās description of the Mindflayer and how it possessed its victims. Something akin to rage flared up in Coleās body thinking about it hurting Adam, but he buried the feeling for now. That was something to ask Max about later.
Meeting Adamās eyes, Cole shook his head.Ā āPlease stop apologizing,ā he said, brushing a stray tear off of Adamās cheek. It made his chest physically ache to hear the pain in his voice.Ā āI donāt blame you. I know it wasnāt your fault.ā Coleās eyes welled up again as he offered Adam a smile.Ā āIām just so glad youāre here, that youāre okay. I love you. I always will.ā
Cole paused again, barely resisting the urge to kiss away his questions.Ā āI might have some answers... about what happened. We can talk about it, whenever youāre ready,ā he promised, taking Adamās hands and squeezing them for comfort. Distantly aware that they were still on the Richardsā front porch, but unwilling to leave Adam, Cole tugged on his hand.Ā āWant to come over to my place?ā he asked, knowing that his house afforded them more privacy, as it was only him and his mom.Ā
jackforemanā:
āYeah, Adam and I were in the woods together ⦠in the commune. So, I guess they let us go, or we just left together,ā he explained with a shrug. Didnāt Cole know that Adam had gone away with him?Ā āI mean, I donāt know, I guess it makes sense. He was one of my friends in high school, so I guess if heād decided to go into the woods for some shit like this, then the other wouldāve followed.ā At least, thatās what he was telling himself. Everything made sense.
Jack didnāt recall Adam and Cole being that close in high school. He knew the two were friends, but he didnāt think that theyād be hanging out so much that Adamās parents would be sick of him, or so he said.Ā āNo, Iām sure theyāre glad Adam has a friend now that heās back. You know, someone to hang out with. I went over to Steveās after I saw my family, you know, just to say hi, but other than that, Iāve kind of just been hanging out with my sisters. Not that theyāve ever missed me before this, but I think they might have this time,ā he said with a laugh.
xx.
Cole nodded, going along with Jackās story. It was certainly easier than telling what had really happened to Adam. Though, it made no sense-- why would Jack have a memory of being with Adam at the commune? None of this made any sense, and Cole was too nervous to figure it out, in case he uncovered something he didnāt want to know.Ā āRight, of course. Well, Iām just glad youāre both back and... relatively okay?ā he phrased it as a question, raising an eyebrow at Jack as if to assess his mental wellbeing.
With a smile, Cole agreed with Jack. That much was true, at least with Adamās sisters. Heād gotten very close with them after Adam-- died, disappeared, whatever-- and he felt as if they were his sisters now, too.Ā āWell, thatās valid. Iām assuming you also didnāt contact anyone while you were gone, right? Iām sure they have a lot fo questions.āĀ Ā
After several days too long stuck to the hospital bed, Cole was thrilled to be home, to have a change of scenery. He was still bedridden for the most part; the three broken ribs made it difficult to walk still, but his daily trek downstairs to the family room and then back upstairs to the bedroom felt better than sharing a 4x4 room with Steve Harrington. No offense to Steve, but he snored. Or maybe it was Eddie. Either way, being home alone and lounging on the living room couch was ideal. Adam had left an hour ago, promising to be back soon, and Cole was half sleeping half watching whatever stupid Western was on at 1p.m.
When Beth walked in, Cole smiled up at her. It was funny, the ways all the people closest to him entered his house: Adam and Chrissy with a polite knock, Beth breezing through the door, Max scaling the side of the house.Ā āThought you were my mom,ā he remarked before studying the options sheād brought over.Ā āI donāt know... should we try something new?ā Cole grabbed the tape from Bethās hand and held it up with a teasing smile.Ā āYeah. Hairspray. Heās hot, remind me of Adam,ā he winked. It was fun to be able to tease Beth about him and Adam again, like he used to before. And it was nice to hang out without one or both of them breaking down into tears.Ā āI think we need popcorn, though. Thereās some in the pantry, if you donāt mind,ā he asked, giving her his best pleading eyes.Ā
WHO: beth richards & @loverboymontgomeryā WHERE: the montgomery house
There was nothing more that Beth hated than feeling useless. It was exactly how she felt for most of the time when Cole was in the hospital: Adam was there to hold his hand, and she was left to provide not much more than moral support and the occasional errand. She hadnāt even been with Cole and Adam when the explosion went off; she was with Cindy and their parents, distracting them while her favorite couple in the world spent some much-needed what was supposed to be care-free time together. Now that Cole was home, though, Beth had ordered Adam to sleep, something that he hadnāt done in days, while she ran over to Family Video and then the Montgomery household to keep Cole company.Ā
After three years of just Beth and Cole, Cole and Beth, it was strange to not just spend time the two of them anymore. She wasnāt complaining: having Adam back was all theyād wished for and more since he died. What she missed now, though, were the late nights that she and Cole spent up watching the latest movie on tape, early mornings at the diner when they simply hadnāt slept at all. Now, at any opportunity to try and relive just that, she jumped at it. Beth let herself into the house, Maggie more of a surrogate mother to her now than Ms. Montgomery, and headed toward the family room, where Cole had been set up with the television on loop.Ā āAlright, Iāve got lots of options. Dirty Dancing, which, I know weāve seen a bunch since it came out, but I think itās becoming a comfort of mine. Or, hear me out, Hairspray. Just came out on tape, Steve Harrington said I came by just as Karen Wheeler dropped it off.ā
Keeping his head low so strangers (or worse, friends) wouldnāt see the dopey grin on his face, Cole ducked into Melvaldās. Since Adam had gotten back, he and Cole had been spending every waking minute together, switching from Coleās room to Adamās room every other day. It was bliss, and Cole truly believed he could stay there, in Adamās arms, for the rest of his life. But, nature calls, and so do the Richards. They parted ways for a few hours, so Cole could stock up on snacks and beer and Adam could go to family dinner.Ā
Cole was a mix between stupidly happy and incredibly on edge. Happy for obvious reasons and on edge because he was afraid that if he wasnāt with Adam, something would happen or he would disappear again. As he fast-walked through the aisles, indiscriminately picking up cereal boxes and chip bags and beer, Cole stopped short when a vaguely familiar voice called out to him. Turning, Cole struggled to not spill the contents of his arms onto the floor. He really shouldāve gotten a cart.Ā āForeman, yeah. Hey,ā he smiled easily, remembering Jack as the football team captain. Cole quirked an eyebrow when he mentioned heād been away with Adam. Had he been? Cole didnāt remember Jack leaving, but why would he make that up?Ā āYou were... uh, out of town?Ā Or...?ā his voice trailed off, the question hanging in the air.Ā
WHO: jack foreman & @colemontgomeryxā WHERE: melvaldāsĀ
After getting his greetings and affairs in order, Jack decided to head to Melvaldās to get some basic life things now that he had no toothbrush, deodorant, or anything essential, really, since his parents had rightfully thrown everything out upon his disappearance. His mother had offered to go do it for him, but Jack declined, thinking that it might be good to get out of the house. His parents had sworn to never let him leave Hawkins again, and he was certain that that was at least half true, but heād promised to go straight to the store and back home. No going near the woods any longer, that was for sure.
He kept his head low as he entered the store, careful to not make eye contact with anyone who might recognize who he was. Jack was sure that his face had been in the newspapers back when everyone had apparently gone to this commune in the woods, and he wasnāt ready to start answering questions about any of that yet. He wasnāt sure he even knew why he wouldāve gone in the first place. As he walked through the aisles, though, Jack recognized an unmistakable head of hair, and he brought down his hood from his head.Ā āCole?ā he asked, dropping a tube of toothpaste from his hand into his basket.Ā āIām sorry, I donāt mean to bother you, itās just ⦠Iām Jack. Foreman? You were on the football team, the manager, right? I donāt know if you remember, but Iām, um, back in town, I guess, with Adam Richards, he ⦠you guys were friends, I think. Anyway, itās, uh ⦠nice to see you.ā
bethkrichardsā:
With a piece of popcorn in hand, Beth chucked it lightly in the direction of Cole in response to his commentary about her brother. It was almost sickening, how much in love the two were, and while she teased Cole and Adam about how much they said about each other in front of her, Beth had missed it.Ā āOkay, Walden. To be fair, he could have, and I would have had no idea unless you two werenāt being messy in the driveway,ā she reminded him, raising a brow. Sheād thought about how Adamās sexuality mightāve died with him if it werenāt for Cole, but Beth was glad to know that she knew everything about her brother before heād left them.Ā
Beth nodded her head wordlessly, sadly. She knew exactly what Cole meantāeven if Adam hadnāt been entirely himself at the carnival, there was no way he was ever going to entirely forgive himself for what his body had done.Ā āI know. Iām worried about him, too. I mean, you were there ⦠was he like he was, you know, in that last week or so?ā To think that the Adam that heād been back then could come back was terrifying, but at least now the three of them could work together this time to try and prepare.Ā āI wish I couldāve been there. For you, and for him. I know I couldnāt have done much, but still.ā
xx.
Cole caught Bethās smile, and he returned it easily. Since heād graduated from tutor to boyfriend, Beth had been like a little sister to him. And with that came its fair amount of tormenting. Adam was such an angel, someone had to torture Beth and Cindy every once in a while!Ā āWoah, not the government name!ā he feigned surprise, pressing his good arm to his chest. Cole smirked at the memory, at how new and urgent it felt to kiss Adam right there and right then, even if it was in his driveway.Ā āIāll never apologize for kissing him. And besides, you got me out of it-- your extra big brother.ā Cole nudged her shoulder affectionately, hoping it communicated how glad he was to be in her life without having to get sappy and gross.
His stomach squeezed as Bethās expression dropped; Cole hated seeing her upset, and he almost wished he hadnāt brought it up. Not that she wouldnāt have asked, but Cole wanted Beth and Cindy to be able to just enjoy Adam being back, without all of the baggage attached. But, Cole could never lie to any member of the Richards family.Ā āYeah, he was,ā he admitted, wrapping his good arm around Bethās shoulders and pulling her into him for a hug. It hurt his ribs, but he didnāt care.Ā āNo, Iām glad you werenāt,ā he said, quickly.Ā āNot that he would...ā do anything,Ā āI just donāt think heād want you to see him that way.ā

the hideaway wasnāt usually at the top of lucasā list of places to hang out, but after the carnival, he was looking for just about anything that might take the edge off. heād been attacked by the doppelganger. max had been taken by the monster. the older kids had nearly gotten blown up. any of those things would be traumatic enough on its own, but add on the fact that five people -including mr. clarke- had died, and it left lucas with a lot to think about. according to his therapist, heād gotten to the anger portion of his grieving process when heād vandalized his middle school. showing up at the hideaway when he was supposed to be at physical therapy? that was squarely in the depression part. it wasnāt that he didnāt drink, but lucas didnāt usually drink alone.Ā
which was probably why lucasā first instinct upon walking into the dimly lit bar was to find a drinking buddy. relief loosened his shoulders when he spotted cole montgomery sitting at the bar. ever since the guy had fallen into an open grave trying to help lucas out of one, heād felt a strange sort of camaraderie with the other. he wondered if coleās doctors knew he was spending his time drinking at the bar before realizing he probably didnāt care if they did.Ā āsame as you,ā he answered with a humorless smile.Ā āneeded a drink.ā he nodded as he slid into the seat to coleās left and ordered a beer.Ā
the good thing about this bar was that they rarely ever carded, especially not after tragedy struck town. again. he remembered that his dad came here the night willāsĀ ābodyā had been found. and he and the basketball team had spent time tucked into a corner afterā¦something had happened to jasonās girlfriend, right? lucas couldnāt remember. either way, the bartender passed over a glass and lucas thanked her with a smile, lifting the beer in coleās direction in a mock toast.Ā āthanks.ā he took a long sip and wrapped both hands around the cool glass as he turned in his seat to look at cole properly.Ā āsoā¦ā his eyes flicked back to cole, one side of his mouth quirking in the shadow of a grin.Ā āwhatās new? seen any good movies lately?ā
xx.
Needed a drink. Cole certainly couldnāt argue with Lucasā logic, enough had happened to warrant everyone in town taking a load off, especially Lucas. Cole absentmindedly wondered if Max knew Lucas was here. He hadnāt exactly gotten an update from her in a while, so he didnāt know what was going on between the two of them, except that there was something. There had always been something. āWell, cheers.ā Cole raised his glass to Lucasā and took a long drink, barely stopping himself from downing the whole glass in one gulp. Best to reign it in, in case Lucas relayed anything to Max.
Not that they were exactly talking right now, anyway. Things had been weird ever since Tessa Callowayās funeral, which Cole only attended because Adam wanted to, for the record. Heād been torn up about the whole thing since then-- partially because heād fought with Max, but also because he couldnāt help but wonder: How many others were afraid of Adam? How many others wouldnāt hesitate to restrain him or hurt him, even though none of this was his fault? Cole took a long look at Lucas, the otherās words processing somewhere behind the alcohol-induced haze of Coleās mind. Was Lucas one of them, too?
The side of Coleās mouth quirked over the glass at Lucasā joke.Ā āHmm... Dirty Dancing? Iāve watched that like, six times with Adamās youngest sister now. Or Hairspray,ā he added, laughing at his movie choices. He knew Lucas wasnāt the type to make fun of him, but still, couldnāt he have at least seen a Star Wars movie or something? Then, it clicked.Ā āThe Lost Boys. Max really liked that one,ā he smiled fondly, but his smile faltered after a second.Ā āIs she... doing okay? Itās been a minute.āĀ

everything had been such a blur and happened so fast that steve wasnāt sure what had happened anymore. he thought if some parts of it had been his imagination, but⦠he had definitely gotten into a fight with both jack and adam, but only he had come out injured. which was weird to think about, because he had definitely thrown around a couple of punches and he remembered quite well hitting jack in the face and then immediately feeling the pain in his face. he wasnāt sure how that had worked, but he wouldnāt be the one to figure out either. not while he was recovering, he thought to himself.
he looked over at adam for a couple of moments, pursing his lips as he did. he knew that he wouldnāt do anything like he had done at the carnival, he was hoping that whatever had happened had been a one time thing, which he doubted. but he wasnāt about to go around doubting everything that adam did. it just wouldnāt be cool of him to do so, and adam was a good friend to him when he wasnāt puking out some black goo and attacking him.
letting out yet another chuckle, immediately wincing at the pain that it caused, steve shook his head.Ā ālisten, iāll ask the nurses to bring some more for you.ā he said, nodding his head slowly when he heard cole talking about eddie. sighing, steve nodded again.Ā āyeah, they⦠they arrested him. which was stupid because eddie would never do anything to hurt anyone. they were just trying to find a way to get him arrested for⦠the shit that happened two years ago.ā he said, shaking his head, clearly still angry that someone would just do that for fun. he hated everyone who had been part of arresting eddie.Ā āweāll all be okay⦠eventually.ā he nodded, letting out a sigh. at least he hoped that they would be.
at the question, steve just shrugged his shoulders. he hoped that he would have all of the answers to give to cole. he hated that he had been dragged into this, just like everyone he knew had been dragged. he hated that something was back and that they couldnāt do anything about it.Ā āi donāt know⦠i really donāt know. i would try asking nancy, sheās⦠sheās the whole brains of the group. iām sure she knows something by now.ā he said, not knowing if it was true or not, but considering their last encounters with something supernatural, nancy was always the one to figure it out.
xx.
Cole tried, desperately, to read Steveās expression when the othersā eyes fell onĀ Adam. Right now, in the hospital room, Adam was the least threatening presence-- his arm snaked around Coleās fingers, intertwined, dirty blond hair rising and falling with his breaths. But Cole and Steve both knew what he was capable of when he wasnāt in control, and it was something Cole had begun to fear. What would others say or do to Adam now? And could Cole protect him? From others, from whatever was causing the blackouts?Ā
He trusted Steve to be fair and kind, he had no reason not to. Since Steve had stopped hanging out with Tommy H and Carol, Cole had seen another side of him-- from afar-- a more sensitive and caring Steve Harrington. And after everything that had happened between the two of them, Cole hoped that Steveās goodwill could extend to Adam, too.Ā
Cole smiled, relieved that Steveās comment pulled him out of his head, at least for the time being.Ā āYeah, bat your pretty eyes at them and get them to bring extra, while youāre at it,ā he joked. It felt nice, even normal for a minute, until Steve told him about Eddie. Coleās frown pulled his eyebrows together.Ā āNo, he wouldnāt. Thatās bullshit,ā his voice raised, which hurt his throat.Ā āI canāt believe theyāre holding onto that, with... Chrissy back.ā Steveās sigh seemed more hopeful than it was convincing, but Cole decided to let it slide. Positivity, however forced, wasnāt bad for them at the moment.
He nodded, then frowned when he remembered that Nancy was in the hospital, too. He wasnāt surprised, really, that she was the brains. It made him feel even a little confident that whatever this was could be stopped, with Nancy at the helm.Ā āIs she doing okay? Have you heard?ā Cole asked, worry creasing his brow. He leaned back in his bed for a minute and studied his and Adamās hands, how theyād always fit together so naturally. Cautiously, he glanced back up at Steve.Ā āYou know that that wasnāt him, right? He would never... he doesnāt hurt people.ā Coleās eyes betrayed his desperation for someone to believe it, for someone to be on their side.
