rereading the lee jihye cinema scene is really making me think about the parallels between kim dokja and lee jihye in ways that are so evil. like the point of this scene is lee jihye grappling with her trauma from killing na bori with kim dokja's help, with him telling her that its true she did a terrible thing but that all that matters now is she lived, and that she has to continue living. "Atone for the rest of your life or live a garbage life. Just somehow survive!"
lee jihye did something horrible to someone who loved her deeply in order to survive. the fact that na bori gave up her life willingly doesn't ease lee jihye's guilt - she still feels as though she doesn't deserve to be alive. and kim dokja feels so much compassion for her in this moment! he sees her for what she is - a terrified kid who just wanted to live - and fights for her to survive. he encourages her and empathizes with her and generally does his best to ensure she can live on even with all her guilt because he doesn't see her wanting to survive even at the cost of others as an unforgiveable crime.
which makes the fact you can see the clear parallels between lee jihye and the oldest dream here so much more heartbreaking. the oldest dream is an extension of the message that kim dokja passes onto lee jihye here - no matter what, you must somehow survive. thats what the oldest dream's existence is, a kid trying to somehow survive. that desperation is what his all powerful dreams are born out of. he pushes orv's message about living having a cost, and having to bear that cost, to its extreme - oldest dream's survival was very expensive indeed, causing incalculable suffering across universes and taking 1864 of yoo joonghyuk's lives. this is something kim dokja has to bear to keep living - its something hes unable to. orv forgives him for this, but he does not. both lee jihye and oldest dream are kids who want to live, both hurt those closest to them in the process, both are unable to live with that guilt even when absolved of it by the very person they hurt.
but where kim dokja empathizes with lee jihye, where he cares for her, where he sees her as still deserving of a future, he is unable to do so for himself. even in this very scene he is chastising himself for 'using' her, for doing what he has to to survive in an apocalypse, unable to see the irony. all of his companions have made horrible choices to survive in the apocalypse, all of them have chosen to live at an inevitable cost of someone else. and yet kim dokja holds only himself accountable for the crime of survival. it really exposes this supposed accountability for what it is - a deep self-loathing disguised. if it had been any other child sitting at that subway station, kim dokja would have understood. but because it was himself? of course he reacted with disgust and violence - look at the entire book. he's never been able to do anything else when it comes to himself! even when he cares so deeply for the others....oh kim dokja.....
I feel like a reverse svsss cumplane dynamic would be Shen Yuan writing something that seems like it's going to be so horny but then it diverts at the last second to be actually discussing the local monstrous wildlife, while Airplane is leaving screaming comments about how he's being edged by this bullshit.
Airplane: PLEASE, JUST MAKE THEM FUCK! I'M LITERALLY BEGGING YOU HERE, I'M ON MY HANDS AND KNEES!
Shen Yuan: get your mind out of the gutter! This is normal stuff, not everything has to lead to papapa
Airplane: DEMON COWGIRLS THAT STIMULATE THE ECONOMY WITH THEIR BREAST MILK IS NOT NORMAL
So we know that the White Star split the Dominating Aura and left a portion in the Forest of Darkness, right?
So imagine if the voice inside the Dominating Aura is NOT Choi Jung Gun (or some other ancestor) but rather the White Star's younger teenage self (before he becomes a Dragon Slayer/goes crazy), like Jour Thames is in the Rings of Life.
Dude has no idea what sort of maniac he becomes, is just a little shit constantly mouthing off against the other ancient powers in Cale's mind & keeps dissing/shitting on the White Star whenever they fight because he has no idea it's him. You know, cuz of the whole reincarnation thing.
Like I know the logistics here are a bit wonky (since I assume only Dragon Slayers inherit the Sword of Disasters and Dominating Aura once they inherit the title) but bear with me, it's such a funny scenario.
Barrow (lets call him that for now) would just be cheering Cale on the entire fight, thirsting for blood and suggesting pranks to play on the White Star. The funniest scene could be him rolling his eyes (metaphorically, since he's ghost) and shitting on the White Star for being melodramatic with terrible fashion sense. Masks? In this day and age?
Imagine him being horrified when he finds out what he's become, especially since he's firsthand interacted with Raon and the rest (courtesy of haunting Cale).
You know what would be even more hilarious? Imagine him just providing Cale some VERY intimate, embarrassing and awkward details that Cale brings up during battle just for shits and giggles to throw off the White Star.
Cale & the White Star fighting: Barrow, internally: Did you know I used to pee in bed every night until I was eleven? Cale, with a shit-eating grin to the White Star: So how did it feel to have such poor bladder control growing up? Eleven? Tsk, tsk. White Star, half-offended, half-terrified because this is just reinforcing his hare-brained theory about how the Gods sent Cale to kill him because how else would he know this: WHO THE HELL ARE YOU? Barrow, the little shit: During training, I once farted so loud the instructor called me ‘Thundercheeks’ for a month. Cale, visibly pausing mid-battle and incredulous: "Thundercheeks?!" The White Star, screaming in horror: Shut up shut up shut up!!!!
Every time Cale opens his mouth, Sayeru and Dorph lose a bit more respect for their master. Conversely, Raon thinks Cale is possessed (he is). Also White Star, babe, no Cale is not a reincarnator. Your archnemesis is literally you.
Just tinier, more gremlin, spiteful and hormonal. You know, a teenager.
Barrow, rubbing his imaginary hands: See that slight twitch in his shoulder? He’s about to dodge left. Cale: “Oh? So I aim right?” Barrow: “No. Compliment his hair. He'll blush. // Barrow: “Mention the mole. He hates the mole.” Cale: “What mole?” Barrow: “Inner thigh, left side. He’s irrationally sensitive about it.” Cale (literally yeeting a thunderbolt at him): “Still trying to hide the mole?” White Star screaming: “WHAT THE FUCK.”

Desertduo designs to celebrate season 3 >w<
i wanna make a post one day explaining this in full detail but tldr headcanon each soulbound pair has a connecting accessory that signifies the other/their relationship >Grian’s soulbound accessory is a pair of handcuffs (which in game is represented by the fishing rod that he uses on scar in session 1). He can grab a hold of things with the free side of the cuff but cannot remove the handcuffs from his person >and Scar’s soulbound accessory is the key that connects to the Grian’s handcuffs (not represented by anything but he wears it like a necklace)

Oldest dream would have loved his elder self no matter what.
Kim dokja might hate his younger self terribly, but I think OD must have fantasized about being a good grown up, unlike the others that were around him.
So as long as it is Kim dokja we are talking about, he fulfills the category of someone trustworthy, kind and reliable. (even though a bit mentally unstable)
[so why "monster"? Well, if it really is Kim dokja, then isn't self hate a trait he's always had?]
I'm a firm believer that if Kim dokja had reacted kindly to the revelation of oldest dream, OD would have cried that at least there will come a time when he wouldn't hate himself as much.
