You were stalling, you knew that. You told your husband that you needed to find a more appropriate jacket to wear with your outfit, instead of the one you usually wore.

You had no doubt that Peeta was aware you were stalling but as the ever perfect lover he is, amused you by playing into your lies.

To be fair, you did attempt to look at the other coats in your closet. Just to see if there was one that would make this night go a little smoother. But as your gaze rested upon each coat that you had personally picked and loved every time that you wore them, your mind could only bring up the nasty comments your mother in law never failed to make.

When you caught sight of his blonde hair in the mirror you pretended to straighten out the nonexistent creases or wrinkles on your outfit that you had already spent too much time worrying about the week that led up to this day. Both of you knew he would see right through this act, but you couldn’t bring yourself to talk about your negative feelings.

He walked towards you cautiously. When you could feel his body heat, he turned towards the closet. He examined the pieces of clothing before plucking one off of the rack.

“How ‘bout this one?” He smiled

You gazed down at the coat and your heart swelled. It was one of your favorites (you were certain Peeta knew), and it would go nicely with your attire.

As you took the coat from him he reached his hand up to your face so that he could push some of your hair out of your eyes.

“You wanna talk about it?” He asked softly, gazing at you with all the affection in the world.

You shook your head, drawing your eyes away from him.

He cupped your face gently and brought your gaze back to his, “We don’t have to go.”

You shook your head again, “Yes we do-”

“No, we don’t. I am not going to make you do anything that’s going to make you uncomfortable.” You knew he meant it. You didn’t even have to hear him say it.

“I want to do it.” You explained. The unspoken “For you.” hung in the air.

He smiled appreciatively at you and stroked your cheek. You didn’t even notice yourself leaning into the warmth of his hand.

“I know my family is hard to deal with..” Peeta began

You were quick to cut in, “Peeta-”

“You don’t have to say anything, I know they are. Which is why I would never force you to spend any amount of time with them.” He said it so sincerely that you wanted to give in. To say “I don’t want to go” and kiss him goodbye, sit on the couch, watch a movie, and wait for him to get home.

But you also knew you’d spend that time feeling guilty, even though you shouldn’t, because Peeta is right and you shouldn’t have to deal with your in-laws just for him. But you want to. Because even though Peeta’s family sucks, he cares for them. And he cares for you. And you know he’d put himself in this position one hundred times over if it was your family just to make you happy.

So you don’t give in, even though you really wish you would.

Your hand reaches up to cup his hand that was still cradling your cheek. You gave it a reassuring squeeze and looked him straight in the eye as you said, “I want to go to dinner with you tonight.”

Peeta gazed at you for a few extra moments before nodding, “Okay.” he ended it with a sweet kiss as if to say, “Thank you.”

-----------------------------

Being in a relationship with Peeta improved your punctuality. You never arrived too early or too late. It was a skill of his you deeply appreciated and made you glad it rubbed off on you.

Peeta carried a tote bag (that you bought for him) with the baked goods he made for tonight in one arm, and held your hand in the other.

Before he knocked on the front door, he looked at you and smiled, “I’ll be right beside you the whole time. We can leave at any point, just say the word.” He whispered in your ear.

You gave his hand a grateful squeeze and nodded.

It took only a few moments after knocking on the door for his father to appear on the other side.

Simple greetings were made. Peeta’s father was easily the most tolerable, even if he could be awkward sometimes.

Peeta’s father ushered the two of you into the house and Peeta placed your jacket and shoes at the sad coat rack next to the front door.

His childhood house was smaller than your home, even though only you and Peeta lived there. Everything in this house was noticeably old and worn out. Which wouldn’t have been a problem if it wasn’t for the tense atmosphere.

You owned many thrifted things, and had done many home projects, but the two of you always felt it made your house more of a home.

As you walked through the small hallway you noticed all the things that were self-fixed and the cracks made in the walls that made the house look even sadder.

The sight of this house around you made you uneasy, your only comfort being Peeta’s hand.

Peeta

You turned your head towards the man you loved and your heart sank. Your wonderful husband who was kind and good, had the misfortune to grow up in a house like this.

He turned his head at the feel of your gaze. Somehow, he was always able to read your thoughts. A sad smile and a barely noticeable shrug was his way of saying, “It is what is.”

You held his hand a little tighter.

If it was just Peeta’s father and brothers, dinners wouldn’t be as hard for you to attend. But it wasn’t just his brothers and father.

Peeta’s mother stood in the kitchen, handing plates to Peeta’s two older brothers to set them onto the table. She had a look of annoyance on her face, just like every other time you saw her.

When she looked up you felt a jolt go through your body.

The woman’s look of annoyance turned to a scowl.

“Took the two of you long enough.” She barked

It was still a couple minutes before the agreed upon time.

“We weren’t expecting so much traffic.” Peeta said in his usual optimistic voice.

Peeta’s words didn’t soften his mothers scowl as she sharply nodded her head towards the small table, “You two can finish setting up.”

Her attitude wasn’t surprising to either of you. You had been friends with Peeta since school and got together before you graduated. You’ve had plenty of time to grow used to the less than hospitable nature of his mother. But it never stopped the anger from building in your chest when they treated Peeta the way they did.

——————

Dinner was..awkward, to say the least. A lot of jabs from Peeta’s brothers and outright degrading comments from Peeta’s mother. Your father-in-law mostly kept quiet unless he was making more small talk.

You truly believed that the only reason the two of you were ever invited to dinner was because of the envelope with a check Peeta would give his father at the end of every visit.

Peeta provided for them, because he felt he owed them for ‘raising’ him.

You agreed knowing it made him feel guilty not to.

The money he gave was some portion of the money that he made from his paintings, never asking or allowing you to give some of your money.

The car ride home was silent, unlike the one on the way there. Peeta was visibly tense and you were sure that you were too. But his hand wrapped with yours wasn’t firm or anything.

When he pulled in front of your house and turned off the car, the two of you just sat there for a moment in the dark.

You rubbed what you hoped was soothing circles on the back of his hand.

When he let out a deep breath you were relieved that you were helping.

“I don’t think I can do this forever.” He muttered

You nodded, “And you don’t have to.”

“Then, why do I feel like I do?” He turned his head towards you, his eyes glazed over in tears.

“Because you care for them…because despite everything they’ve done you give them the benefit of the doubt.”

“I keep thinking they’ll change.” He shook his head, “Then, I see how they talk to you and I..” he ran a frustrated hand through his hair.

You squeezed his hand and shook your head, “You don’t need to worry about me-“

“I do need to worry about you!” Peeta cut in with a loud voice, “You’re the love of my life and my family treats you horribly! And-and I let them!”

You think back to tonight’s dinner. How Peeta defended you from every comment, praised you for your achievements, and redirected any conversation they tried to start with you, “You don’t let them.” You brushed a couple stray hairs from his face.

“You shouldn’t have to deal with this.” He shook his head, “I won’t let you deal with this anymore.”

Your brows furrowed in confusion, “What are you talking about Peeta?”

“The next time they ask us over for dinner, I’ll send the check in the mail. They’ll get the hint.” He said with a sad tone.

“Oh, baby…” you weren’t sure what to say.

“I don’t think I’ll be able to stop seeing them entirely. I’m not sure I ever will. But some time away and some space will be good for me.” He looked at you again, but this time he smiled a little. “I think it’ll be good for us.”

You were close to crying yourself.

“I meant what I said on our wedding day, you’re the most important person to me and I promised to put you above everyone else.” His unoccupied hand wiped away a tear from your cheek.

You leaned in and rested your forehead against his, taking in his words and proximity. You knew how hard this was for him. How hard it’s always been.

“I’m proud of you.” You whispered

Peeta’s eyes met yours and he kissed you. A sweet, meaningful kiss like many you had had before.

Peeta was the first to speak, “Let’s go inside, I want to have a real dinner with my wife.”

—————

“Thank you for coming with me today. I don’t think I ever would’ve found the strength to finally admit to myself…something I think I’ve always known, without you.” Peeta murmured against the crown of your head.

Your head rested upon your husband's chest, listening to his steady heart beat, with one of your hands spread across his stomach, fingers laced with his.

“I love you.” Was your explanation.

You felt his lips curl up into a smile, “I love you too.”

“Hello, how can I help you?” Peeta’s professional tone is quickly replaced with a genuine smile when he notices it’s you he’s talking to.

You hesitated for a moment, “I was hoping I could show you something…when you aren’t working?” It came out as a question because your mind is suddenly questioning every reason you decided to ask him.

Peeta takes a glance at the space behind him. You see that he catches his fathers eye and the older man comes up to the front.

Peeta whispers something to his father as you observe the bakery. The comforting space was familiar to you as you had been in here as a customer many times. You were silently glad that it was only you and the Mellarks in. But, more specifically you were glad that Peeta’s mother wasn’t in.

When the whispering stopped you turned your head towards Peeta to see him smiling while examining your face.

He drew his eyes away when he noticed he was caught, “Let me put my jacket on, okay?”

You nodded and sat at one of the tables in the bakery.

Peeta wasn’t long, rushing out from behind the counter with a white bag with some of the bakery’s goods.

“I know these are your favorite.” He held them out to you.

You took them in a bit of shock, flattered that he knew that they were your favorite, “Thank you.”

He nodded and then sent a glance at the door. Suddenly remembering why you came, you hopped up from your chair and made your way out the bakeries door. Glancing back a few times to make sure Peeta was following you.

———————————————

After a few minutes of walking with pleasant chatter between you and the blonde, you stopped at the wooden fence that surrounded your town.

“It’s beyond the fence?” Peeta’s tone was questioning.

“Yep.” You said, climbing over the fence slower than you normally would, nervous that he would decide to back out.

But Peeta only climbed over the fence and looked at you with eyes full of trust, letting you lead the way.

You suddenly realized how easy it would’ve been to take Peeta anywhere. You could’ve taken him to an active volcano and he would’ve followed you loyally, trusting you with his life.

Your gaze found the opening in the trees that you had discovered not too long ago, and turned towards Peeta, only to find he was looking at you already.

“It’s through the opening right there.” You pointed. Peeta followed your gaze and nodded.

He let you go first before following through. The blonde gazed around the sight of the abandoned train tracks in wonder.

“The forest practically covers every entrance and exit. I’ve yet to find another opening I can easily get through.” You commented.

Peeta grinned at you, “How did you find it?”

You shrugged, “Dumb luck, I suppose. I was spaced out while watching the trees when I caught a glimpse of the tracks.”

“How far does it go?”

“Miles. I haven’t found an end though.”

“Does anybody else know about it?”

“Just us.”

Peeta turned at you, his gaze questioning, “Why did you show it to me?”

You avoided his eyes, “I thought you’d like it.”

“I do like it.” Peeta confirmed, “Why not any of your other friends?”

You kicked a stone you found on the tracks, “I don’t have many friends.”

Peeta shook his head, “I don’t believe that.”

You caught sight of his smile and you couldn’t help but match it. You sat down on the edge of a track, it wasn’t the most comfortable but you preferred it to the ground, “Well it is.”

“How come? You're such an amazing person. I mean, you're smart, kind, thoughtful, and beautiful.” Peeta said

“You’re not too bad yourself.” You opened the bag of the bakery goodies and offered him a bit.

He shook his head and plopped down next to you.

“I showed you because…you’re just…I like your company.” You said.

Peeta nodded, “I like your company too.” After a beat of silence he added, “Also, because..I admire you. I mean, I never would’ve been able to find a place like this.” He motioned to the space around us.

You shook your head, “It was just dumb luck.”

“Maybe. But anyone else wouldn’t have cared for it the way you do. They wouldn’t have seen it the way you do.”

“How do I see it?” You asked quietly

“Peaceful, beautiful, a place that’s so special you’d only show it to a few people.” He gazed at you, speaking in a whisper, “It’s one of the reasons I like you.”

You examined his face to see if you were interpreting his sentence wrong, but when he moved closer to you, your heart fluttered with joy.

“Can I kiss you?” He asked

You nodded so subtle you weren’t sure he noticed until he did kiss you.

His lips were warm, soft, and comforting.

It was a quick but meaningful kiss. He grinned widely before pulling you in for a longer one, his hand coming up to caress your cheek.

“You like me?” You asked after it was over.

“I thought it was obvious.” He laughed, “Do you like me?”

“I thought it was obvious.” You repeated, before kissing him another time.

No one could truly ever tell how Remus would act around the full moon and to whom. So you could only ever prepare for the constants.

Remus was always physically and mentally drained as his body was preparing him for the transformation. His body would ache. Some months could be much more painful than other months. He was always tired, unable to sleep more than three hours if he was lucky. He was normally restless and tended to bounce his knee, chew on his nails or lip, and fidget with things around him.

Some months he was more angry than anything, others he was more depressed. A week before the full moon was the earliest these side effects occurred. It might start earlier in the week or the middle or at the latest a couple days before.

Walking into the great hall, your eyes immediately searched for your love. Upon seeing him you examined his posture and believed you knew what type of day today would be.

When you got closer you saw James piling some of Remus’ favorite foods on the plate in front of him. Your boyfriend had his hands covering his ears. You believed this to be a subconscious movement to keep out all the noise of the great hall.

James noticed you first, sending you a grateful smile as you sat next to Remus. Far enough to not startle him but close enough so that he could sense your presence.

“Hey, honey.” You said softly to alert him that it was you beside him, but not too quietly that he couldn’t hear you.

You didn’t hear what he mumbled but you took it as a greeting. You gently placed your hand on his back and rubbed it in hope to ease his tension.

Remus was always distant at first, the insecurities plagued his mind. You just needed to be consistent and slowly move towards him.

In the beginning you sat awkwardly next to him. James chatted with Sirius as the black haired boy played wizards chess with Peter. James continued to stuff more food on Remus’ plate, doing his best to encourage him to eat.

Soon enough, Remus allowed himself to find comfort in your presence, and ate a few bites of the food James had given him. It wasn’t enough, but you knew he was trying.

Sirius slammed his hands on the table in frustration from the loss of the chess match. Remus jumped slightly, which earned Sirius a glare from you.

“Sorry, Moons.” He sounded sorry, so you let it go.

Remus just snuggled further into you, taking deeper breaths in an attempt to calm himself. The position the two of you were in was odd to the eye, but it was the best, and most comfortable you could do at the grand tables.

Soon, the owls entered, dropping packages, and hooting loudly. Two packages that were nearly the exact same in size and shape landed in front of James and Sirius.

The two of them grinned and picked their packages up at the same time. If you weren’t so worried about Remus, you would’ve laughed at how similar James and Sirius’ movements were.

“Gifts from Effie.” Sirius grinned at your questioning gaze.

You watched curiously as James and Sirius opened the packages. They both pulled out a delicately wrapped box of sweets and a pouch of coins.

“For the upcoming Hogsmeade trip.” Sirius said absent-mindedly, he gave Remus a sympathetic look knowing that the full moon was this weekend.

“Come on, let’s go back to our dorm.” James said, after he placed the items back into his own box.

You nodded, and rubbed the back of Remus’ neck before whispering James’ words to Remus.

He nodded and stood up, swaying slightly. You were quick to grab his hand and walk with him out of the great hall. You tried to persuade him into leaning on you but he was still well aware that if he were to fall, he would crush you.

Thankfully, Peter was at Remus’ other side, helping support some of his weight. While Sirius hung behind, and James led.

You saw his shoulders visibly relax when you were far enough away from the noise that was the great hall.

————————————————

“Under the cloak you go.” James said, throwing his invisibility cloak over you and Remus.

If someone were to see you going into the marauders dorms, talk would arise and it wouldn’t be good for any of you.

When in their dorm, Remus subconsciously moved towards his bed and flopped down as if he had worked tirelessly all day long, even though it wasn't even noon.

You sat on the edge of his bed. Remus, sensing your proximity, moved so that his head laid in your lap.

All the marauders kept glancing at Remus in worry. James the most. So it wasn’t a shock when said boy spoke up, “He should stay in the dorm today.”

You nodded in agreement, “I’m gonna stay too.”

“You sure?” It was Sirius

“One of us could stay with him.” Peter offered

You shook your head, sending them off to class with a murmur of thanks.

Looking down, you noticed Remus had fallen asleep. You smiled, knowing around these times he got all his sleep from naps.

———————————

Hours later you were awoken from the firm grip on your thighs. Remus’ head was shaking, eyes scrunched up and he was sweating.

You caressed his face, trying to comfort him. He seemed to relax a little.

“Remus.” You called gently, shaking him awake.

It took him a few minutes to come to terms as to where he was.

“What time is it?” He asked quietly.

You glanced around for a clock, before noticing the muggle kid watch you had bought for James last year as a gag gift. You squinted trying to make out the time.

“About two hours after noon.” You answered, trying to relieve the tension in your back and shoulders without disturbing Remus.

Remus groaned in annoyance. He moved to try and get up, but the hand you placed on his back easily convinced him to give up and continue to lay down.

“You should try to get some more sleep.” You said, pushing the strands of hair that stuck to his sweaty forehead away from his face.

“No use.” He answered and your heart aches for him.

“I should start you a bath.” You moved to gently lift Remus’ head from your lap but he halted you with a grab of your wrist.

“Don’t leave.” He whined, “I don’t want to be alone.”

“I’m just gonna run a bath for you so you don’t have to sleep in your own sweat.” You tried

“I don’t care.” Remus begged

You effectively placed Remus’ head into the bed despite his protests.

You were more concerned when he moved to sit up. Even in pain, he moved fast, so you couldn’t stop him.

He delicately wrapped his arms around your waist and pressed his forehead against your stomach. Despite having his arms around you, you could barely feel him. You knew he was denying the want of tightening his hold on you, afraid of being seen as selfish.

You moved for him, pressing his arms around you tighter and moved closer to him so he could bury his face in your stomach.

“You’re allowed to want things, Rem. All you have to do is ask me.” You said, rubbing up and down the back of his neck.

“I don’t want you to leave me.” You knew he meant more of a break-up sense than a physical sense.

“I’m not going to, my love.” The sound of your endearment caused a small cry from his lips.

“I hate it so much.”

You couldn’t even imagine all the pain and suffering Remus had to constantly go through.

“I know, is there anything more I can do to help?” You asked

“Just be here.” He answered quietly

“I promise.” You assured him.

———————————————

Eight Years later

“Don’t fuss, Cariad, It’s not that big, I swear.” Remus chuckled painfully, watching you tend to a wound on his stomach.

“It’s bigger than I’d like.” You mumble through the flush on your cheeks.

“It was quite an angry moose, but I rather a wound from him than my own claws.” Remus said

You froze for a moment then picked back up where you left off, not sure if or how you should respond to that.

Remus’ hiss stopped you from a rabbit hole of negative thoughts.

“I’m sorry.” You said absent-mindedly

“That’s enough cleaning, don’t you think, love?”

“Just a little more.” You promised.

When Remus was all bandaged and done he hummed gratefully.

“So,” He began, resting his hands on your hips as you disposed of the bloody cloths. “How should I repay you for taking such good care of me?”

You hummed, acting as if you were in deep thought, “A kiss or two should be enough payment for me.”

Remus chuckled, “Have I not given you enough kisses today?”

You shook your head, “You never do.”

The man scoffed teasingly, “I thought I gave you a healthy amount, but it seems I've begun to spoil you.”

“Your fault.” You said affectionately, leaning down while making not to touch a wound.

One kiss. Two kisses. Three kisses.

He hummed, pressing one kiss to your cheek, “I thought my payment was two kisses.”

“I changed my mind.” You smiled, resting your forehead against his.

“My silly women.” He caressed your cheek.

“Sorry, Rem. You’re stuck with me.”

“Then I shall die the happiest man.”

The sun was setting outside, the clouds and the orange glow from the sun made the sky look like a painting. The glass towers of Alicante only added to the beautiful scenery. For a moment or two you couldn’t take your eyes from the scene.

Then you heard a loud crash and your head involuntarily turned to see what was going on. Your mind swirled with the worst possible scenarios.

You were relieved to see that it was just a vampire who dropped his glass of blood.

The relief didn’t last long as you noticed that the blood had stained a faeries dress. She had dark green skin with light violet eyes. Her teeth were pointy and she was visibly angry. She snarled at the vampire who looked shocked at what had happened. You worried you might have to step in but then a faerie with butterflies on her cheeks came up to her friend.

They talked in hushed voices and glanced around. You realized that some of the other shadowhunters had also been watching. Some looked more on edge than the others. Some looked upon the scene with dissatisfaction, as if they had been the ones who had blood spilt on them.

You suddenly wished people could mind their own business when you noticed that the green faerie looked quite embarrassed. She glanced upon her dress with disappointment.

It was such a nice dress you noticed. You sighed, feeling bad for the faerie.

“What’s everyone looking at?” A certain warlock whispered in your ear

You turned and noticed that Magnus and Alec were standing beside you. Magnus was trying to look through the crowd but you could tell Alec saw easily over everyone with his height.

Alec whispered in Magnus’ ear and you knew he was telling him.

“What was it stained with?” Magnus asked aloud

“Blood.” You commented

“Oh, dear.” Magnus shook his head and watched as the two faeries wandered out of the big room.

“It was such a beautiful dress too.” You commented

“Alexander, be a dear and hold my bag, would you.” Magnus handed his bag over to Alec without looking, then followed the path the faeries had gone.

Alec, looking confused, quickly followed after his boyfriend, muttering to you a quick “bye”.

You sighed, realizing you were alone. You walked over to the long table with refreshments of all sorts to fit the different appetites of the party's guests.

You grabbed a wooden stick with different fruits on it and looked around the ballroom.

You saw Izzy, wearing a gorgeous skin tight dress that complimented her figure nicely, leading Simon through a dance. If he had still been human you guessed that the dance wouldn’t have come so effortlessly to him as it looked.

“He reminds me of a chicken.” A familiar voice whispered in your ear.

You smiled, pleased, with this newfound presence. “I think they look nice.” You defended your friend.

Jace was wearing nice clothes, you noticed. He was in a black suit that hugged his body quite nicely. For a moment you could only feel jealous of the suit.

Jace shook his head, snapping you out of your thoughts, “No. He’s picking up his feet too much and flailing his arms like a goose.” Jace sighed, “Maybe I should’ve listened to Izzy when she asked me to teach him to dance.”

“You think you can do better?” You asked

He grinned at you, “I know I can do better.”

He grabbed your hand leading you to the floor.

“Do you know the dance?” He asked, setting one hand on your waist and the other in your hand.

“Some parts.” You answered, nervous.

Jace smiled, “Don’t worry, I’ll lead.”

Jace began to move, pulling your body with his. The dance seemed so effortless to him, you were doing your best to keep up.

But you were able to catch onto the dance. You smiled, proud of yourself.

Jace noticed too, “Good girl.” He whispered into your ear.

Before you could react Jace spun you again. You stumbled into his arms. You were quick to notice the stupid smirk on his face.

“If you keep spinning me, you’ll make me fall.” You whispered

Jace only smiled at you, “I’d never let you fall.”

And he spun you again.

“Jace.” You hissed

He hummed with a smirk, “Pay attention to the dance darling or you might trip.”

You rolled your eyes but listened.

His body was warm, his hands rested nicely on your body. Jace's golden eyes were focused solely on you. Only his Shadow hunter training kept him from bumping into the guests nearby.

“Get ready, I’m about to lift you.” Jace said out of nowhere

Your eyes grew wide. Both of Jaces hands went to your hips and raised you into the air. Your hands went to his shoulders, hoping to steady yourself.

When your feet met the ground your feet miraculously went back into the dance. But your breath was shallow.

Jace noticed and slowed, “No more.” He promised you

You nodded, catching your breath.

Jace stopped suddenly, and you stopped with him.

“Come. Let’s go somewhere a bit more private.” He led you to one of the ceiling high doors.

The sky had grown dark, and now the stars were out.

You marveled at their beauty. You stopped when you heard a familiar chuckle.

Jace was leaning against one of the stone walls looking directly at you.

“What?” You asked

“Can you name any of them?” He asked

“What?” You said confused

“The stars. Can you name any of them?” He repeated

You shook your head, “Can you?”

Jace looked up at the sky, “Maybe a couple.”

You smiled, and walked towards him.

The night was beautiful, but also chilly. Your gown, though stunning, didn’t do much to keep you warm. You leaned your head on Jaces chest, testing the waters and seeing what he was comfortable with.

His arms went around your waist pulling you closer.

“Your gown is lovely.” He murmured

You hummed in agreement, “Izzy helped me pick it out.”

Jace nodded in acknowledgment. Jace kissed your forehead and you involuntarily shivered.

“Cold?” You could feel the smile on his lips.

You nodded, “I am.”

Jace tutted, “Well we can’t have that, can we?”

Jace let go of you and stood in the middle of the terrace.

“What are you doing?” You asked

Jace shrugged, “Haven't you heard that if you keep your body moving you’ll stay warm. So we could fight or dance or...something else.” He smirked suggestively

“I choose dancing.” You said walking towards him

He looked disappointed for a moment but he quickly wiped the look off his face as you grew near, “Eager are we?” He teased

You grinned, “Eager not to be cold anymore.”

He huffed out a laugh, taking your hand in his.

At first the dance was fast, then it slowed at the sound of the piano.

You laid your head on Jaces chest when a cold breeze came through.

You could feel Jaces chest rumble as he chuckled.

“Enjoying yourself are you?”

You scoffed, “You’re warm and I’m cold.”

“Perhaps we should head inside?” He suggested

You shook your head, “I like it out here. With you.” You mumbled the last part but you were sure he heard.

The night was still young, but you could feel yourself drifting off to sleep with your head on your lover's chest and the sound of piano being played in the background, as you danced under a starry sky.

Illness And Comfort |Remus Lupin

Stepping out of the fireplace with a flash of green you listened curiously to your surroundings. When you saw that Remus was not in his usual chair you worried that he had bed-ridden himself.

You used the floo powder network to get to the small Wizarding village, the closest to you, in Wales, hoping to find all you needed. You were in luck, but you felt your luck had been used up when you heard the awful coughs from the upstairs of your cottage.

You quickly dashed around your home, anxious to put all of your purchases away and get to your husband.

With record breaking time (by muggle standards) you placed everything in the correct spots, neatly (with the help of your magic), and carried the tray of food, medicine, tea, and water to your bedroom.

“My love,” You said in greeting, taking in your husband's appearance with regret.

Though you now had access to the Wolfsbane potion, which allowed Remus to keep a sound mind during his monthly transformation, it didn’t stop the pain that came leading up or during his transformation. And with the two of you growing older, Remus’ body was unable to recover the way it once could.

But, if we are talking about differences, you should make it a point to mention Remus’ face at the sight of your appearance. His face had once filled with shame, anger, helplessness, and longing when you saw him in such a state. Now, his face brightened increasingly as though you were the hero coming to protect him from the monsters.

“Cariad,” he greeted you in his mother tongue while making a move to sit up.

“None of that, my love, let me help you so you do not strain yourself more.” You rushed to his side as you noticed his movement.

Remus' chuckle sounded painful but he still smiled through his grimace.

“I apologize, my dear, I was quite excited to see you.” He responded.

“I am your wife, you see me everyday.” You say with an airy tone.

Remus made a noise of appreciation as he looked at you with all the wonder in the world.

You brushed some of the wispy hairs from his forehead and kissed it once.

“Fever?” Remus questioned

Your lips thinned, “Yes.” You moved to open the window in your bedroom.

“Don’t worry, my darling.” He replied as if meant to assure you.

“I’ve been looking into some muscle relaxer potions.” You said, a little absentmindedly.

Remus shook his head, “You don’t have to do that-“

“I should’ve done it a long time ago.” You cut in, your tone making it very clear that you didn’t want Remus’ disapproval.

Remus grabbed your hand gently, and ran his thumb over the back of your hand in soothing circles, “What I mean, is I don’t want you to make yourself sick worrying about me.”

“I always worry about you.” You say with vulnerability that you no longer withheld.

Remus smiled, “As I do you. Whatever will happen, will happen, so let’s enjoy our time now.”

“Yes.” You agreed quietly

After a moment of affectionate gazing, that would have Sirius gagging, you said, “I brought you up some food, have you eaten anything?”

Remus shook his head no, causing your brows to furrow in worry, but you looked away so that he would not be displeased.

He noticed anyway, “I wasn’t very hungry, and I didn’t want to make you rush.” Remus said.

“I suppose we should start keeping some snacks in our room, so that you don’t need to face the same problem.” You replied.

Remus nodded, “That would be a good idea.” His face shown in content, much to your pleasure.

“Here,” using your wand, you levitated the tray of Remus’ food and drinks so that it could comfortably hover in the air above his lap.

“I'll go get some more food, I don’t think this will be enough.” You made your way to turn when Remus let out a small shout of disagreement.

“No!” The tray of food magically moves itself so that Remus doesn’t knock it all over as he reaches for you. The look on his face tells you the unspoken words of “all I want is for you to be here.”

“Rem.” You start, but Remus only shakes his head.

You let out a little sigh, and Remus grins, knowing he’s won.

You move to your side of the bed, sitting on top of the covers. You watch as Remus digs into his plate while trying to make small talk with you.

When he’s done and the tray is moved, he lays his head on your chest. Your hand subconsciously goes to his head, your nails scratching and soothing him.

“I love you.” You can hear in his voice that he’s about to fall asleep.

“I love you, Rem.” With a gentle kiss upon his forehead you know he’s asleep.

Late Night Demon Hunting | Jace Herondale
Late Night Demon Hunting | Jace Herondale
Late Night Demon Hunting | Jace Herondale

The only thing that can be heard in the institute is the sound of your black boots against the hardwood floor. You remind yourself to put a soundless rune on your boots before you leave.

Your thoughts are interrupted when you see a certain blonde leaning against the wall- is he filing his fingernails with his stele again?

“Jace?” His head shoots up at the sound of your voice and he grins.

“That would be me.” He begins to walk toward you, “Are you ready to go?”

“What do you mean?” You question confused

“Demon hunting of course, what else? You know they can never get quite enough of my good looks. Such a shame they get themselves killed for it though.” He answers with a fake sigh of disappointment

“I didn’t think you were going.” You answer walking to his side

“Why, because my parabatai is currently traveling the world with his warlock boyfriend? You know a shadowhunters work is never done, even then. You know, we should go on vacation somewhere, just the two of us.”

You ignore the increased beating of your heart and look up at your boyfriend, “I mean, that I didn’t think you’d be going with me. I thought you were gonna take it solo until Alec got back.”

“And let my beautiful girlfriend go by herself. I gotta make sure you’re safe, just like any good boyfriend.” He grins at you

You scoff, “I think I can handle myself quite alright.”

“I know, but it is quite hot watching you fight, and I thought ‘why deprive myself of such a wonderful sight’.” He responds with the same stupid grin

“You won’t be able to watch me because you’ll be too busy fighting yourself.” You say while subconsciously making sure you have everything I need on your person

“I can do both, you know I'm a fantastic multi-tasker.” He smirks and you choose not to answer him

“So, do you have everything?” He asks once more

“I need to put a soundless rune on my boots.” You recall

He clicks his tongue and nods, “We don’t need the sound of your boots alerting the demons of our unholy intentions.” He kneels down in front of you and draws the rune on your right boot first with his stele, then a twin of it on your left.

He stands back up and faces you, “Is that all then?” He whispers his face close to yours.

You manage to keep your composure but your voice breaks when you answer, “That’s all.” you curse yourself inwardly

He smirks and kisses you, hard. You're barely able to kiss him back before he’s pulling away and grabbing your hand, pulling you towards the door.

------------------------

Jace's left hand held a sensor while his right held your hand. You were walking through ChinaTown, which was busy considering the time of day. But it was always busy in New York City. The people walked past you without a single glance since you glamoured ourselves sometime prior.

“Anything?” You ask glancing at the sensor in Jaces hand

Jace nods and looks up. You see a restaurant you often order from, mostly on the nights Izzy decides to...cook.

“Well at least this demon has good taste.” He murmurs before pulling you into the restaurant.

You look around before you hear Jace whisper your name, when he sees that you're looking at him he nods his head in the direction of one of the tables.

You see it immediately, sitting alone at one of the tables with a plate of egg rolls. To the mundane it looked perfectly normal but you and Jace were able to see right through its disguise.

Jace scrunched his nose, “Who eats only egg rolls? This ones weird.”

You rolled your eyes but smiled, “They’re all weird.”

Jace shrugs and silently nods to the sign that indicates the direction of the restrooms. You nod back and then detach from each other.

As you're walking around the corner you're able to hear Jaces voice, “Have you ever tried their mu shu pork? It’s to die for.”

You roll your eyes and giggle under your breath.

A man passes you without a look in your direction as you lean against the wall, waiting patiently. You don’t have to wait long before the demon that was sitting at the table is thrown at the wall past you. He gets up quickly snarling his ugly long teeth.

“Not friendly I see.” You comment grabbing one of your seraph blades from one of the pockets in your jacket

“She’s taken, buddy.” You hear Jace say, but you don’t turn to look at him, keeping your eyes on the demon who’s still snarling at you.

You murmur the name of your blade just in time for the demon to lunge at you. Your blade grazes its side causing bits of black blood to trickle out of the wound. It hisses slightly in pain.

“You never did answer my question!” Jace yells as the demon now lunges at him

You come up behind them intending to stab the demon in the back but it lunges out of the way before you get the chance.

Jace, now at your side, looks at the demon expectantly.

“Screw you shadowhunters and your pork!” The demon hisses in a non-human voice

Jace gasps before lunging at the demon with his seraph blade, “And here I thought we were gonna have a nice conversation.” Jace says through clenched teeth

The demon narrowly dodges Jaces blade as you make your way toward the demon once more. Your seraph blade punctures the demon's arm and it yells in pain as you push it toward Jace.

Jace cuts off one of its legs making a puddle of black blood underneath. Jace's arms go under the demons and he holds it as still as he can while the demon struggles against him. Jace nods at you with a smirk.

You lunged at the demon one last time and cut off its head.

The hallway is now drenched in black blood, and that reflects on your gear.

“Hot.” Jace says to you as he stands up from behind the demon

You shake your head but your smile gives you away.

Jace looks down at the demon's remains and makes a disgusted sound, “How can he not like mu shu pork?” Jace asks

You laugh and walk towards him. The demon's body and blood disappear unsurprisingly.

“That’s what you got from that?” You laugh

“You meet a lot of ugly demons if that's what you’re talking about. But I’ve never heard of one not liking mu shu pork.” Jace answers, his arm going around your waist.

“That’s because you never ask.” Your answer

Jace makes a sound of agreement, “I suppose I should start then.” He looks down at you and smiles, “Breakfast?”

You look down at your clothes, soaked in black demon blood and sweat, “Shower.” You answer

Jace grins, “I like your idea much better.”

Sunrise | Hiccup Haddock

Hiccup Haddock Masterlist

Word Count: 1.3k

Genre: Domestic-ish fluff

Pairing(s): Hiccup Haddock x Fem!Reader

Summary: An early morning ride turns into a race between you and Hiccup.

Warnings: Heights

Notes:

Reader is a dragon rider

Readers dragon is never specified

Take place on Dragons Edge

|PICTURES ARE NOT MINE|

——————————————————————

Sunrise | Hiccup Haddock
Sunrise | Hiccup Haddock
Sunrise | Hiccup Haddock

Hiccup makes handling dragons look easy.

It’s not.

It seems that Dragon Hunters have a never ending schedule of making your life difficult.

All you wanted to do was sit outside your hut (that you spent far too much time trying to decide where to place) and enjoy the beautiful view with your dragon, your boyfriend, or your friends.

Easier said than done.

When your boyfriend is Hiccup Haddock who has devoted most of his life to protecting dragons, free time doesn’t come often.

Hiccups values are part of the reason you fell so hard for him, but sometimes it seems to take from your relationship.

Laying in your bed thinking all of this over in your head is not a great start to your morning.

So, you climb out of your bed and throw on some clothes.

You whistle as a sort of wake up call to your dragon who is sleeping soundly.

Your dragon groans and moans barely opening one eye to look at you. This was their way of saying, “Do you know what time it is?”

You scoff under your breath completely aware they could still hear it, "Don't worry, I haven't lost track of the time. Let's go for a ride, just you and me." You move to get their saddle as they move around loudly in protest.

"Weren't you the one who wanted to start doing this?" You bring up the time Hiccup mentioned that he and Toothless go for early morning rides often and your dragon looked at you as if to say, "We should do that!"

Your dragon lets out a regretful moan in response.

You throw the heavy saddle over their back with little difficulty.

"Come on, if you really don't like it, we'll end it early."

____________________

Your dragons behavior has done a full one-eighty. How the dragon you're riding on now and the one you argued with this morning were the same creature baffles you.

"Are you enjoying yourself?" You tease, watching your dragon close their eyes at the feeling of the wind hitting their face.

They snort and suddenly drop a few feet in the air.

A shriek makes it's way out of your mouth and it takes you a few moments to realize that you aren't falling anymore.

"Not funny." You ground your teeth a little.

All your dragon does is laugh in response.

Just when you got over the shock in your body does a familiar voice startle you.

“Good morning, milady!”

Turning your head to peer over your shoulder, you make eye contact with the voice, returning his wide grin with your own.

“Good morning!” You laugh, only needing to wait a minute more before Hiccup and Toothless were right beside you.

Your own dragon and Toothless exchange greetings as you and Hiccup chat.

“Didn’t expect to see you out so early. Something on your mind?” Hiccup questions

You shake your head, grin never faltering, “Just wanted some fresh air, before everyone wakes up. But it seems someone is up.”

Hiccup chuckles, “Oh, you know, just out looking for some adventure. Right, bud?” Toothless grumbles in agreement.

“Adventure, you say? Well, do share with the group.” Your tone is playful.

Hiccup waves his hand in dismissal, “Unfortunately, me and Toothless have seen quite enough adventure for one day. But, I wouldn’t be opposed to sharing our stories to you, milady.”

“You’re all out of adventure for the day? Don’t say that, Snotlouts not even up yet.”

Hiccup's laugh echos around you.

—————————

"So this is where you run off to hm?" You tease sitting down on what you previously believed to be a watch tower. Now realizing it was Hiccup's camouflaged hideout.

Hiccup scoffs playfully, "I don't run off anywhere."

"You're right, you fly." You add

Both Hiccup and your dragon roll their eyes but Toothless lets out a snort of amusement.

"At this point he barely walks himself anywhere, isn't that right?" You look over at Toothless, who happily humors you.

"All right, all right. I guess I won't take you on any morning rides anymore bud." Hiccup voices looking a little smug.

Toothless no longer looks amused.

"Nothing to say Toothless?" Hiccup pokes, earning a glare from the Nightfury.

"Don't worry, Toothless. If he doesn't take you on any morning flights, I will." You whisper loud enough for the other two to hear you, earning a protest from both.

Toothless lets out a laugh and hops around in satisfaction.

Your dragon makes loud noises of detestment and even goes as far as glaring at Toothless.

"What?" You address the cranky dragon, "Do you know how hard it was to get you out of the hut this morning? I'm sure Toothless wouldn't make it so hard for me?" You tease

"Now wait a minute, who said you could steal my dragon?" Hiccup says

"Your dragon." You reply and hear Toothless agree behind you.

Hiccup's mouth opens but no words come out.

You were too busy soaking in the satisfaction you felt from Hiccup's response that you didn't notice your dragon make its way over to you until they knocked you over with their head.

"Hey!" You shriek as your dragon "attacks" you.

You can hear Hiccups laugh in the background and Toothless' sound of surprise.

"Okay, okay! I'm sorry, I was just teasing!" Finally they let up looking satisfied with themselves.

"Like rider, like dragon." Hiccup comments

You scoff, "Says you."

Hiccup leans back against a rock, "Says me." He agrees.

You lean back against your dragon and shake your head.

After a few moments of comfortable silence you reopen the conversation, "Any news from Johann?"

Hiccup sighs, "No. I know he's scouting almost as much as us but it's as if they've gone completely underground."

"Maybe they finally feel defeated. With the more people we meet and become friends with, the more unpopular the dragon hunters get." You add

"Maybe. Or they're planning their next ambush on a new dragon. I feel uneasy with how quiet they've been." Hiccup confides

"We'll keep looking Hiccup. Once we find them we'll stop whatever they're doing, just like we've done before."

Hiccup nods in agreement.

You find a way to bring up your next sentence, "While the dragon hunters are quiet maybe.. we could spend some time to enjoy it." At Hiccup's confused face, you continue, "It's been a long time since we've hung out together, just the two of us."

"We're hanging out together right now?" Hiccup says.

"I know. But just the two of us." You repeat

"Oh. Oh." Hiccup understands

"I know everything has been chaotic, I was just wondering since we seem to finally have some downtime. It'd be beneficial spending it doing something other than talking about the dragon hunters." You explain

"No, you're right. It has been a while since we've hung out, just the two of us. What were you thinking?" Hiccup asks

"I don't know, I wasn't even sure if you wanted to so I didn't really think about what." You say

"You think I wouldn't want to hang out with you? Of course I'd want to hang out with just the two of us, I enjoy your company more than anyone else." Hiccup says

You smile genuinely, "I've been wanting to go down on the beach and examine the shells, see if I could find any fossils or something. How about that?"

Hiccup grins, "Yeah, that sounds really fun."

Your smile grows and you stand up feeling high on adrenaline, "Come on. The others we'll be up soon and we don't want them setting the edge on fire before breakfast again." You offer your hand to Hiccup.

"No we don't." Hiccup takes your hand, "Thank you milady."

"So..race you back to the edge!" You hop on your dragons back.

"Wha-Hey! Wait a minute!" Hiccup calls after you hopping on Toothless' back, "That's not fair!"
