No-i-can-not-shut-up - Support Women’s Rights And Women’s Wrongs

Since her death in 1979, the woman who discovered what the universe is made of has not so much as received a memorial plaque. Her newspaper obituaries do not mention her greatest discovery. […] Every high school student knows that Isaac Newton discovered gravity, that Charles Darwin discovered evolution, and that Albert Einstein discovered the relativity of time. But when it comes to the composition of our universe, the textbooks simply say that the most abundant atom in the universe is hydrogen. And no one ever wonders how we know.❞ — Jeremy Knowles, discussing the complete lack of recognition Cecilia Payne gets, even today, for her revolutionary discovery. (via alliterate) OH WAIT LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT CECILIA PAYNE • Cecilia Payne’s mother refused to spend money on her college education, so she won a scholarship to Cambridge. • Cecilia Payne completed her studies, but Cambridge wouldn’t give her a degree because she was a woman, so she said to heck with that and moved to the United States to work at Harvard. • Cecilia Payne was the first person ever to earn a Ph.D. in astronomy from Radcliffe College, with what Otto Strauve called “the most brilliant Ph.D. thesis ever written in astronomy.” • Not only did Cecilia Payne discover what the universe is made of, she also discovered what the sun is made of (Henry Norris Russell, a fellow astronomer, is usually given credit for discovering that the sun’s composition is different from the Earth’s, but he came to his conclusions four years later than Payne — after telling her not to publish). • Cecilia Payne is the reason we know basically anything about variable stars (stars whose brightness as seen from earth fluctuates). Literally every other study on variable stars is based on her work. • Cecilia Payne was the first woman to be promoted to full professor from within Harvard, and is often credited with breaking the glass ceiling for women in the Harvard science department and in astronomy, as well as inspiring entire generations of women to take up science. • Cecilia Payne is awesome and everyone should know her. HIYA.

So a lot has gone on in the last little bit. NASA recently was ordered to scrub their site of women's contributions to astronomy and astrophysics, even took down their page celebrating women's history month and all the contributions they've made to NASA. So I did a thing and crawled through the wayback machine to find some articles, and decided to put this right here because fuck the government, fuck the orange in charge who told them to scrub their site, and fuck NASA for throwing their people under the bus and bowing to this authoritarian nonsense. This version of the site still has articles on some important figures like Eileen Collins, the first woman to command a space shuttle, and ISS chief scientist Jennifer Buchli and chief deputy scientist Meghan Everett, who, in their words, "-provide the science strategy and make science recommendations for the International Space Station program, and help make sure all of the science on the International Space Station goes smoothly, from preparing for launch to conducting research on the space station with the scientists and astronauts and returning the science to Earth."

DISTRO SISTERS: Success!

DISTRO SISTERS: Success!

Despite the failure of Sista Surge Media to meet its goal by the deadline, Distro Sisters is going strong, and is projected to launch by the end of the month! We could not have done this without you! We still, however, urgently need your support in our Florida launch, and further expansion!

▪︎ [FUND US]: https://donorbox.org/distrosisters ▪︎ [DONATE]: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/ls/ref=mw_dp_wl_v?&lid=2O442WOIL51HB&ty=wishlist ▪︎ [JOIN US]: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeP87HnK5cfkfOlozKvemFai0oqpmV2wYPIvqkcfFX93tcA1w/viewform?usp=send_form

We have branches planned for the Atlanta, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Tampa areas. In the coming months, we will be reworking Sista Surge Media to pitch to investors and large donors, so that we can continue operations without relying on financial contributions from our supporters. We realize that there are many causes our sisters support, many of varying urgencies and demands—so we want to be able to support those too!

We were able to get food, medicine, menstrual hygiene products, and personal hygiene products thanks to the help we’ve received from all of you! We thank you for that, and appreciate your efforts! Now, all we need is funding for a small warehouse bay which will function as our base of operations, shelving units, first aid kits, and a refrigerator to store the perishables. We have our sister Natalie who is providing us with uniforms, and Yaya Por Vida who provides us with NAXALONE and contraceptives, so thank you to our precious allies!

We also understand that some sisters would be more willing to send contributions when they are tax-deductible, so we’re currently working on a non-profit to help us collect contributions efficiently, and to help fund other efforts that are close to all our hearts. Sista Surge Media will be the foundations of these operations. It will provide our sisters with jobs, and supply a large portion of funding to our other initiatives, like the International Womyn’s Army, ReproFight, and Distro Sisters.

If you are still willing and able to contribute in its current form, you can do so at: https://donorbox.org/sistasurgemedia

Thank you, deeply, to everyone who is involved, or has been involved at some point! You are deeply appreciated!

In strength, sisterhood, and solidarity

Sasha S. Graham

Sometimes I feel like aggressively propagating naturalness.

Because what do you mean women go through vaginoplasty? 😭

What do you mean men convinced women that their vaginas can be too ‘big’ and therefore too ugly? The literal organ that helps to bring children into this world.

I want to cry when I think about this.

The desperation that those women must face, to go through such a surgery. All to be ‘normal’, ‘desirable’ to men and not picked on by them.

If I could I would hug them.

A reminder: There is nothing wrong with the body that you are born with, as long as it is not creating an existential threat to you. You are you. You don’t need to enhance yourself, because there is nothing wrong with you in the first place. Your nose is not to big. Your breasts are not too small. Your vagina is not ugly.

Your body is your temple. Please, love it. Accept it.

For yourself. Everyone else can go and get lost.

Some devastating facts about abortion rights in Europe:

Polish abortion laws lay out that the rights of a foetus are more important than those of pregnant persons.

In Malta, women are sent to prison if they get an abortion.

In Austria, abortion is written into criminal code - this means it is considered a crime if it is not carried out as by the law. Doctors in Austria use papayas to learn how to perform an abortion.

Women in Hungary are forced by the law to listen to “the foetal heartbeat” before they can have an abortion.

The current law governing abortions in Germany was accepted during the Nazi regime. It is still referred to as “the Nazi law” by some movements.

In Italy, 80% of doctors refuse to perform an abortion. Plus, the government is financing movements that enter abortion clinics and harrass women who want to get an abortion.

Abortion rights in Europe are fragile. Sign our initiative to make abortion safe and accessible to everyone in the EU.

hate how women being gnc is just her being normal and natural and human like not shaving hair, no makeup etc. but when a man is “gnc” he actually chooses to conform to another societal standard (wearing makeup, painting nails, etc)
