There were a lot of great character moments in the first few overwrites! Much to think about...

one of my favorite ever tropes is "siblings who fight and have roles that cover each others weaknesses" so like. can we talk abt how cross and xpapyrus definitely have that?

like- everything points to that, specifically to cross taking a more offensive role while xpapyrus is more defensive. cross is smaller in stature and his weapons (aside from magic) are dual blades - hes a speedy attacker who prioritizes the damage he deals to his opponents over preventing damage to himself.

meanwhile xpapyrus is bigger with a bigger weapon to boot. hes got his bigass scythe-hammer thing, which is definitely slower than cross's blades, but more conductive to things like blocking attacks.

i think the way theyd fight together would be like - xpapyrus attacks using magic and his scythe, doing damage but prioritizing blocking and dodging. cross is a smaller, harder to hit target, but as he fights he can leave himself open to attack in his single-mindedness. as cross gets off his rapid attacks, xpapyrus covers for him, taking the brunt of the retaliation. then, as he goes for an attack himself, cross is able to stop foes from striking him as hes vulnerable by - you guessed it - more fucking attacks.

they are definitely trained to fight on their own, but i think they also specifically trained so they could fight together to the best of their abilities. i wanna see them fight side by side, rather than against each other... i wanna see it so bad

personally, i find it really funny how prone cross and xpapyrus are to crying.

like- cross is a known crybaby. hes been shown to be one time and time again. and tho xpapyrus hasnt been shown to be as "sensitive" as cross, hes pretty open with his emotions, which. yeah leads to open crying. i think if cross starts crying xpap isnt too far behind.

they are complete and utter losers and i love them dearly.

if you want to watch a sad movie w them (or any kind of movie with a sad/otherwise emotional part) please make sure you have tissues handy they will need them.

What was Cross' relationship with his Frisk? I can't stop thinking about it

In X-Tale (Timeline 10) was like his little brother, or even like his son. He only wanted to protect Frisk all the time.

And in the first timeline, we were good friends.

Okay okay, but personally, I have a really hard time getting a proper grasp on Cross' character? I know he can be extremely goofy from snippets we've seen from his past, but the majority of the time, we've seen him dealing with some pretty heavy shit and not taking it well. I try to give him some impulsive and whimsical moments when I write him, but he usually comes out pretty serious anyway. There's just not that much canon stuff to go on when it comes to his more chill side.

On the contrary, I think I have a pretty good grasp on his character, at least as good of one as I can get with what I have.

Cross is impulsive as hell. Consistently, he makes decisions based on how he feels in the moment and never thinks anything he does through beforehand. (Examples: Attacking people who get in his way or whom he thinks is bad news. Trying to steal Overwrite without understanding how it works. Suddenly trusting Chara. Deciding that he’s better suited to look like a bad guy and adopting the title of X-Event. Basically throwing temper tantrums on a regular basis. Turning his back on Ink just because he found out that Ink can’t help him with his universe.)

He assumes that he understands more than he does. Kind of tying in with his impulsiveness, Cross constantly makes decisions based on his own assumptions rather than actual fact. And he assumes that those theories of his are truth until someone tells him otherwise–after which he tends to freak out and start the hating the person who told him otherwise.

Sometimes he just does things out of spite. He didn’t even think Frisk’s plan to overthrow XGaster was bad, but he likes screwing over people he doesn’t like. Sure, Frisk was fricked up too, but points towards how immature Cross is.

Yes, he’s immature, and has a very childish attitude in general. This isn’t just because of the shitposts and interactions with Epic–no, this is actually part of his personality. He regularly acts like a little kid. Doing things out of spite. Throwing temper tantrums. Trying to be all evil but just making a fool of himself in the process. Holding grudges for no reason. Clinging to things rather than just letting them go. Assuming he knows everything. Hating to lose or be wrong. He’s just… kind of a self-absorbed dick.

Cross is the very definition of an adult who never stopped being a teenager. Except he’s violent and has no one to stop him from making stupid decisions, which he makes a lot of because he doesn’t understand how to function as a mature person, especially because he wasn’t raised properly and wasn’t taught these things, but that’s another story.

Plus, it’s really obvious that he has anxiety, and it’s easy to see why. He’s got a lot of pressure on him all the time. But that’s not the reason for his flaws–he’s always had them regardless. Even with his whole “I was never trained to be lazy” line, it means that he was taught to always be on guard all the time. That’s definitely a source of ingrained stress and anxiety on its own; that and a domineering ‘father’.

And of course, Cross does have some nerdiness in there somewhere, so then comes in the whimsy and the funny stuff. He’s melodramatic and just seems like the type to make a lot of noise and to make sure everyone knows how he feels at all times, so he’s kind of a drama king. But he’s also the type to just be an asshole for no reason.

Basically what I’m trying to say is that, interpret details as you will, but he is far from a calm person. XD

ok so. i talk a lot about how cross is a swap sans, and his au is a mashup of a classic and swap timeline, right?

well. xpapyrus also acts like a swap papyrus too i feel. obviously he’s not entirely a swap pap, given how he’s in the royal guard and has a lot of energy and more outgoing personality. he’s a blend of a classic and swap papyrus. given the outgoing ability and efficiency while keeping some swap papyrus traits. notably, how willing he is to harm others. obviously he’s not going around beating the shit out of people, but unlike classic papyri, he would hurt or even kill people. this includes cross, his brother. “he remembered the cruelty of xgaster”, classic papyrus in underverse after remembering all of the resets didn’t dare harm frisk, the person making his universe’s resets happen.

crazy how xpapyrus says this given he completely had the intention to kill cross. like he was 100% willing did you see those blasters. also stop deadnaming your brother :(

he’s also generally been a fairly snarky kid compared to cross. cross fears xgaster as a child (because xgaster is implied to beat the shit out of his kids. crazy how we ignore that one), and still does as an adult, but as a child it’s. it’s obvious yk? but papyrus never really gave a shit. xgaster can mistreat him all he wants but he’s going to call him out whenever applicable. in the ‘looks like we have to kill this guy steven’ meme, he would be garnet. he and 1-S would be friends as kids because both would most likely let their gasters die under certain circumstances, whilst 2-P and cross would be more similar (both want approval and acceptance from their fathers/gasters, and both defended him despite how there is literally no reason to not let him die, etc).

also, compared to classic papyrus, xtale papyrus is more laid back at times. there’s this comic jakei made ages ago which shows it really well and i’m trying to find it but god it’s so old and also deleted i think. i have it saved somewhere hold on. WDYM I DONT HAVE IT SAVED. hold on. wow ok 2 hours later and i have no idea where it is. but he’s chiller than the other papyri and more comparable to swap papyrus at timessigh

I'm standing around at work thinking about this AU and now I'm imagining that Paps and Sans have a conversation about keeping secrets.

Like Sans keeps asking what's wrong or saying he's there to listen or "you can tell me anything bro" and it just happens to get asked at a time where EC! Papyrus is reeling really bad and he just a absolutely SNAPS

"OH, SO IT'S OKAY FOR YOU TO KEEP SECRETS FROM ME MOST OF MY LIFE BUT WHEN I HAVE KNE THEN IT'S A PROBLEM?"

aw poor paps. Hmm as much as I’d love to see papyrus snap like this (and honestly he has every reason to loose it) but he wouldn’t go as far as disrespect his brothers privacy. in the au, when he’s really upset, like in this scenario here, his frustration would quickly die down and immediately retract everything he says, “YOU KNOW WHAT, ITS NOTHING, SORRY FOR ACTING OUT LIKE THAT ITS…BEEN REALLY STRESSFUL…” sans would easily forgive papyrus and they’d both talk it out. They love and respect each other dearly, hurting each other is the last thing they’d ever want to do. Especially Papyrus. Even though he’s been through so many resets, and has every reason to get upset and lash out at sans, he still knows better. It’s frustrating, it’s hard at times but even through it all, even though sans might not completely understand what he’s going through, that’s still his brother. They always have each other’s backs
