Your dead husband suddenly shows up at your door. He looks the same, speaks the same, holding him feels the same, but it's not really him. He's just a few degrees off, a handful of different choices removed from the man you knew. He doesn't know you, he knows a different you. He's standing right there but there's an entire universe between you. But even though you know he's not really the man you loved you beg him to stay because someone who's almost him is better than being all alone.

Besides which Alice clearly has also lost her parents and possibly her brother, no WONDER she's desperately holding on to the glimpse of her Sam in her nightmares, no wonder she absolutely jump at the thought of Sam just reappearing, out of nowhere-

You know that post about drawing characters who die with scars from the way they died? Arthur's kinda already got that several times over by now, but after this latest death, is he just gonna like, have a whole network of scars tracing between every limb and beyond, like a patchwork quilt
If you ask me what my favorite part about the magnus archives is I would say it’s the characterization. Not a single character is one dimensional. Martin, the lighthearted almost comedic relief character, the guy who had a crush on his boss and brought the guy tea like every day was the most pragmatic character in the end. He escaped prentiss and prepared for her attack, outsmarted Peter Lucas, got HIMSELF out of the lonely, and he always, without fail, knew the harsh reality of every situation. Jonathan sims aka the archivist is shown to be a grumpy, gloomy, and all around skeptical person, but his actions don’t reflect that. He desperately digs for answers, refuses to ask himself questions before running into dangerous situations, and he’s such a hopeless romantic. The man with every fact or hard truth in the book likes to imagine he might be good.
It’s the same in the magnus protocol
Alice is funny and carefree, she jokes and talks without thinking, she likes to tell people they are doomed, likes to joke about the bleakness of life, but it’s so obvious she believes in something brighter. Or she at least believes in loving the people around you to the point where at her lowest she manages to pick herself up by the boot straps and LEARN. Her friends are dead or gone and all she can think about is finding out how to fix it, forward motion. Celia is complex specifically in her feelings. She doesn’t seem to regret throwing Sam to the wolves necessarily, but she’s scared for him, guilty. Her guilt eats her alive even if she would have done the same thing again, for her baby, for her life. Gwen is interesting because through every single one of her arrogant, snobby, “I’m better than you”s, she never ever believes it. She might think she’s better, might reach for power, claw her way to the top, but does she ever actually think she’s better? Would she ever have the confidence in herself to ask for help, she is stuck in a limbo state where she wants to be separate from everyone but can’t help but to seek their company, even when it’s clear she isn’t even welcome.

The tragedy of Sam talking to Melanie and Georgie is that he doesn’t know to mention the computer voices and he didn’t know to mention the Magnus institute and he won’t talk about Celia and we’re all sitting here violently shaking everyone in that room like if you would just TALK TO EACHOTHER

Yeah so when Alice repeated several times in season 1 that she is NOT getting involved with spooky eldritch horrors unless something bad happened to someone she cared about, I thought it was going to be a case of sad tragic foreshadowing.
Little did I know it was an actual promise.
The woman is teaching herself computer science, learning about alchemy, and breaking into apartments. She heard the Heinrich Unheimlich case and booked the first flight to Germany. It's insane how the worse things get, the more competent and savvy she becomes. Like she reverse-engineered the DPHW system on the first try. That's crazy! And cool! Alice the woman that you are. The most unserious character and yet somehow the one proving to be the most capable to handle the horrors in this new universe. Love you girl!

"what even happens in the magnus archives" Everything Happens In The Magnus Archives. it's all in there. you name something that is in any way scary or unpleasant and it's in there somewhere. if you have a niche phobia or recurring nightmare of any kind, no matter how obscure you may believe it to be, then one day you are going to queue up an episode and listen to the intro music play and then they'll read out the title "episode 42069, catching you in 4k" and recite your own personal worst fear Directly into your ear canals, in exactly the words you would use to describe it. the sixth episode is about exploding worm sex that kills you. and then there are 194 more episodes after that.
