the bar was packed. compared to your first day of work there, the amount of people crammed into the dim lit space had basically tripled. even though, the band wouldn't go on for a couple hours, the place was already bustling with excitement. rumi, whose shift had begun an hour prior to yours, was already running around passing out drinks and taking orders, while keigo had taken to bartending for tonight. he spotted you and took his hand off the tab he was pulling beer from to wave you over. hesitantly you pushed through the crowds and made your way behind the bar.
"don't you clean up nice, ace."
he lazily slung an arm over your shoulder and pulled you into a quick side hug. you weren't bothered by the physical contact, keigo had already seemed like the touchy type on your first day. not in a bad way, though. he was just very extroverted. you were actually more put off by the nickname.
"ace?" you looked back at him – an eyebrow raised and your head tilted to the side. he laughed, finishing up the beer and setting it down for one of the patrons at the bar. when he turned back to you, his laugh had turned into a cheeky grin. before keigo could offer up his reason for the nickname, rumi jumped in.
"he gives all staff nicknames, it's a whole thing." you hadn't even seen, when she had rejoined you, but she was on her way back on the floor with a full try, just as quickly. "be glad, that yours isn't bird themed."
rumi left without another word and you turned back to keigo. "you seriously give everyone a nickname?" he shrugged, grabbing the ticket one of the servers had just put in. "yep." he grabbed a bottle of tito's from the shelf and poured it over a glass of ice. "it's more fun that way." that seemed to be the extent of his answer, before he added one more thing. "everyone, except rumi that is."
you watched her weave through the masses, confidently carrying the tray to her tables. on your first day, you had been a little intimidated by her. she was taller than you, by quite a margin. you were pretty sure, that she at least matched keigo in terms of height. that was only half of it, though. not only did she exude a confidence, you could only hope to ever match in your dreams, but she was ripped. like really fucking ripped. she had worn a compression shirt the other day, that had shown off every single rippling muscle in her upper body. and again today, in a loser shirt, you could spot the way her bicep and forearm tensed under the drink tray, with every little movement.
"why?" you asked; your eyes still following the woman's movements. keigo stood next to you, his eyes following where you were looking. "let's just say, i can still feel the bruise from the day i tried." a snort escaped you, involuntarily. mocking your boss on your second day of work had not exactly been on your to-do-list for today, but keigo didn't seem to mind. he just accepted your reaction and flashed you another cheeky smile.
"by the way, if you do mind the nickname, let me know."
"i don't."
he nodded before turning to the side to hand a young woman her vodka cranberry. with a wink and an almost unnoticeable flash of his tongue between his teeth, he wished her a fun night. you felt even more affirmed in your assumption, that he just flirted with everyone under the sun. you hushed to the back of house and tied the black apron around your waist. rumi had been sweet enough to already put in a little notepad and pen for you, so that you could quickly get back onto the floor and start taking orders. when you got back behind the bar, rumi quickly went over your section with you. she also told you that keigo would let you both take a break during the band's set, so you could enjoy it outside of working.
for the next two hours, the two of you took care of your tables, but whenever you passed each other, you couldn't resist quipping about customers being idiots or just throwing each other air kisses. you had worked in customer service before, though by now, that had been almost half a year ago, but you had never had an infant connection with any coworker the way you had wit rumi. it was only your second day of working together, but the way your shared laughters echoed over the loud atmosphere of the black wing, most customers would probably assume, that you had known each other all your lives. there was something refreshing about being around her and keigo. even though, all three of you were working, you felt an ease that was more akin to a hangout between friends. having pretty much only tomura to talk to – and your mother, though that was an entirely different thing – had taken more of a toll on you, than you would have liked to admit.
"you, all right, ace?"
keigo playfully flicked your forehead with his pointer. ripped from your thoughts, your hand moved to the point of impact. he hadn't flicked hard enough for it to hurt, but you still looked up at him. he watched your brows furrow and your lips purse, clearly amused by your expression.
"what was that for?" you crossed your arms in front of your chest, tilting your head upwards to look at him even closer. his grin didn't falter for one second. "you were spacing out."
"oh shit, i'm sorry." your eyes suddenly found the ground below you much more interesting than keigo's face. he just laughed. if you hand't felt like he had just caught you red-handed, you would have been offended. "don't worry. you're not in trouble." you could hear in his voice, that he was suppressing yet another laugh. "just worried about ya, ace."
you blinked a few times unsure of what to make of him seeming so genuine, but went back to work pretty quickly. he kept his eyes on you for a bit, as if to wait for your response. after a few seconds you just shrugged it off with a perfectly practiced 'it's fine, just a bit nervous'. he figured you had meant the concert and the crowd that had come along with it. considering it was your second shift, it made sense, that you would be nervous. you didn't feel the need to elaborate and he left you to serving drinks.
the bar got very crowded, very quickly. compared to just a few hours ago, when you thought, that it had already been full, it was now packed. you were aware that lov had amassed quite the following online, which was in big parts thanks to tomura's already huge twitch following. but you would have never guessed, that so many people would squeeze into the bar to see them play live. you overheard conversations here and there, as you made your way back from the floor to rumi. most were talking about how excited they were. some spoke about how well they liked the new ep; others of course discussed how much better or worse it held up compared to their older music. here and there you even heard comments that went something like 'oh my god, dabi is so hot! i can't wait to see him play!' or 'i hope tomura notices me, i would literally die if he looked at me!' you snorted out a quiet laugh, as rumi leaned on the alcohol shelf behind you two. her eyes followed yours, watching the group of girls that was sipping for your brother and his fellow bandmate.
"looks like they're going on." she nodded toward the stage that was being lit by a singular spotlight.
keigo stood at the center of it, tapping lightly on the microphone in front of him. the shrill of the feedback, made you wince. keigo had noticed a couple people being put off by it and tried covering it up with an awkward laugh.
"give it up for lov!" he hadn't even finished the announcement before loud cheers already drowned out the sound of his voice. "performing their new ep 'disintegrate' for the very first time tonight!"
you doubted that anybody had been paying attention to keigo's words. right as he had finished up his introduction, the first of the band members had stepped on stage. lazily spinning his drumsticks in his hands, spinner passed keigo with a quick nod and took his spot behind the drums. he was followed by himiko skipping over to the right, where he keyboard was. even from as far away as you stood, you could see that it was plastered full with various stickers. from the moment himiko walked onto the stage, you could hear the clicking of a camera shudder and see multiple consecutive flashes coming from the crowd. ochaco was true to her word – taking pictures almost entirely exclusively of himiko. though to be fair, you would most likely do the same, if only to piss of tomura. speaking of, him and dabi came onto the stage last. both taking their place at the center, though dabi was a bit further to the left. they both slung their instruments over their shoulders, fine-tuning them before beginning to prepare for the first song of the set. you could barely hear them introduce themselves or their first song over the loud cheers that blared through the crowd. by the time the cheers and screams had died down a bit, they had played halfway through the first chorus and keigo had slipped back behind the bar.
"feel free to go up front, by the way." he pulled out a bottle of whiskey behind rumi and poured himself a glass. "talked to the owner and he said it's fine." he winked at the two of you earning himself a death glare from rumi and a deadpan expression from you. the feigned annoyance at your boss was short-lived, especially when rumi grabbed your wrist to pull the two of you through the crowd. you were sure, that she was going to get pushed back or at the very least get some nasty insults thrown at her, but most people you two passed were simply too intimidated by the woman to say a thing. that didn't save you from the salty looks cast your way. and yet, by the time they had finished the first song, you were at the very front, basically right in front of where dabi had positioned himself. when he noticed you standing in the front row, staring up at him, he threw you a cheeky smile. much to the dismay of tomura, he even added a little bass riff at the end of the song, finishing it off with a wink in your general direction. which of course, about ten other fans that stood around you two, decided, had been thrown at them. you were pretty sure, yourself, that he hadn't meant it for you specifically. rumi would have disagreed, if you had asked for her opinion, that is.
it felt like they were blasting through their songs. half an hour passed you by in a blink and suddenly they were halfway through with their set. you and rumi had gone back to the bar under the guise of at least working a little bit. (you were both standing on the bar counter dancing.) keigo had yet to complain, so you were just enjoying the moment for now. you didn't take note of the bright blue eyes trained on you, watching your every move. he hadn't even really wanted to, but he had glanced in your general direction and just noticed, that you looked like you were having the most fun out of everyone in this room. something about the way you just ignored everything around you and completely lost yourself, to the point that he was almost scared, that you would fall off the counter, kept drawing him in, even as he tore his eyes away from you to engage with the remaining crowd.
when the band got to their last few songs, rumi and you were sitting on the counter, exhausted from dancing. the two of you were laughing so hard, that you both struggled to catch your breath, which in turn only lead to the two of you laughing even harder. sitting on the counter had gotten you a couple of reprimanding looks from keigo, but he was glad, still, that the two of you were having fun. he stood behind the bar, leaning forward so he could easily turn his head sideways to look up at the two of you. the three of you remained like this for the rest of the show, with only keigo moving every once in a while, when someone ordered another drink. every now and again he would sigh.
"if only i had staff, i paid to make drinks." he still ended up pouring all the drinks himself, even shooing you away, when you had wanted to help him.
lov had just finished the final song of their encore, leaving the stage after bowing, even though the entire crowd was screaming for them to get back out. himiko was the only one who peeked her head out from back stage one last time. though only to throw up a piece sign and stick her tongue out for ochaco to take a picture. rumi and you were forced to go back to work pretty quickly after, when the crowd stormed the bar, obviously needing their post-concert refreshment. you fell back into the same rhythm from before, chitchatting with the two of them and bickering back and forth while swiftly finishing up all the orders.
rumi had left about two hours before the bar officially closed. technically, keigo had offered to send you home early as well, but you had just figured you would stick around and have tomura drive the two of you home. reluctantly he had accepted and let you help him out with closing. the bar was closed officially, but keigo had let the band stick around in the basement to come down from the show and have a little celebratory jam session.
you had no idea how it had happened, really, but out of nowhere ochaco and himiko had popped up in front of the bar counter. with the latter grabbing ur wrist and dragging you along with them to the basement. the room was very small and crammed to the brim with music equipment, a battered, old couch and a little pile of what you assumed to be jackets, pants and whatever else musicians apparently needed to change on a whim. spinner had claimed the couch for himself using his drumsticks to keep a haphazard beat. tomura was sitting to his right on the floor, his trusty electric guitar was plugged in, but he wasn't playing any of their songs just jamming to the rhythm his drummer was giving him. on spinner's right was dabi, who joined in here and there with a little bass riff, to harmonise with tomura. you were in awe that he could play laying on the floor with his legs up leaning on the basement wall. the three almost hadn't heard you come in, too focused on their fun little experiment. when ochaco let the door fall shut behind her, they all looked up.
"hey guys." spinner was the first to lift himself up and walk over to you with a welcoming smile on his face. "how'd you like it?" he was asking both you and ochaco, but it was clear that he meant pretty much only you. "i loved it." you replied immediately, recounting how amazed you had been by the variety of the songs they had played.
"we could tell." dabi piped in. he was grinning, too, but something about his expression seemed a lot more mischievous than spinner's. "you know, 'm surprised keigs let you guys dance up there." he chuckled. his eyes almost unnoticeable trailed up and down your body. the glance was fast enough for you to figure, that you had imagined it.
you grinned. "pretty sure, rumi would have done it regardless." "touché."
dabi looked at you one last time before turning back to his bandmates. "going for a smoke. anybody wanna join?" his eyes trailed the room, waiting for anybody to pipe up. they seemed to hang on you a little longer, than anybody else. you thought for a second. after having been stuck in the stuffy bar for hours, maybe a bit of fresh air would do you good. "i'll go." you finally said.
he nodded before leading the way to the backdoor that led to the back alley behind the bar. keigo had shown it to you once, since that was where all trash had to be disposed of at the end of the night, but he had also said, that he would never let anybody go there on his own. especially not at night. you understood why. it was a barely lit, narrow little alley; away from any type of busy street. especially at night, this alley was entirely deserted. dabi stood next to you, pulling a packet of cigarettes from his jeans' pocket. he tilted the packet toward you, waiting for you to take one. his brows knit together, when you didn't.
"just needed some air." "ah." he nodded placing the cigarette between his lips.
from his other jeans' pocket he pulled out a dark purple zippo lighter with some kind of stitch design on it. he flipped it open, watching as a tiny blue flame emerged. your eyes widened. you had never seen a lighter with a purely blue flame before. "cool, huh?" he grinned, bringing the flame close to his face to light the cigarette.
he took a long drag, purposefully blowing the smoke away from your face. you appreciated it, but you wouldn't have minded it either way. home had always smelled like smoke and nobody had bothered turning away from you, then. after one, two, three more drags he held the cigarette out for you to take. you hesitated. you hadn't smoked before and to be honest, you were a bit worried, that you would embarrass yourself with a coughing fit. you doubted that you could take the embarrassment, especially coupled with the smirk that you knew would be etched onto dabi's face. "no, thanks." you smiled. "no worries."
he continued to smoke.
"did you wanna cash in, what you were promised?"
"huh?"
he couldn't help but chuckle at the utter confusion displayed on your face. he crossed his bare, heavily tattooed arms in front of his chest. you didn't like the mischievous glint in the far right corner of his mouth. even only knowing him for as short as you did, you know that couldn't mean anything good.
"i mean, you were promised a kiss with the show." he shrugged.
the words had left his lips so nonchalantly, as if he had just told you how the weather was. he did however find your reaction hilarious. the way your eyes had widened, when your brain had put together what his words meant and how you had to physically stop your mouth from gaping open in utter shock. he couldn't stop grinning at how genuinely shocked you were.
"oh fuck off."
you tried your best to sound as deadpan, as you could, but you couldn't stop the grin from poking out through your sorry attempt at a blank expression. curse dabi and his damn infectious smile, you thought. he just laughed. he had obviously not meant anything by it, but he might have entertained the possibility of you actually agreeing, even if only for a split second.
"but seriously, you guys were amazing."
you beamed, recounting how awesome the experience had been. there was something about the real and raw excitement you showcased, that endeared him. you had such a genuinely kind way of speaking, when you talked about how great they had performed the songs and how you had enjoyed all the ad-libs dabi and tomura had bounced off of each other. you were soft, gentle in a way dabi wasn't familiar to and he felt strangely enveloped by the warmth of your excitement.
"… and that one solo you and tomu did during 'smokescreen' was so cool!"
"also, you sounded great by the way." your smile was so sweet, it almost ached him to look at you. "i didn't know you sang, too."
he just shrugged. "usually just do backing vocals. i sing main on two songs, though."
you knew which ones he was referring to. one was at least two years old and technically unreleased – you had only heard it, when tomu had played you the demo. and the second was 'blue', which you had noticed, they hadn't performed tonight. then again, a ballad like that probably wasn't suited for a show like that.
"you definitely should sing more." you nudged him lightly. "i mean, if you like to that is."
you backtracked a bit, having realized that might have come off a bit demanding. dabi didn't seem to think so, though.
"well, since you're asking, pretty."
he emphasized the pet name in a way that mad it clear, that it was meant to tease you a little. you decided to just ignore it. just like you ignored the way dabi's tongue played with the inside of his mouth before his face fell back into his usual cheeky grin.
he was just about to say something else, when a vibration came from the pocket of his jeans. he pulled out his phone and immediately his face went blank. for a split second there was something unreadable in his eyes, but it was gone as quick as it had shown up. his face was now stone cold. none of the playfulness from before was visible. the blue of his eyes, though still bright, was now ice cold as he stared at her.
"i gotta go." his voice was equally as cold.
before you could ask any type of question, he had already disappeared into the dark streets.

the room is cast in a soft glow of the yellow colored LED lights, the bluetooth speaker on your dresser plays electric love as background noise. you sit at your desk finishing up the last of your homework after your last text to denki telling him to come over.
his signature knock rings through your dorm a few minutes later and a small smile makes its way onto your lips at the sound.
standing from the desk and crossing the room in a few strides, you open the door to find denki standing there with a sheepish smile on his face.
“i uh, picked these from outside before coming here,” he shrugs lightly, in one hand he holds a makeshift bouquet of flowers and in the other a small baggie filled with pre-rolled joints.
“thank you,” you smile and take the flowers from him and guide him into the room. “what’s the weed for?”
“stole it from sero to use as courage.”
you laugh, the sound like music to denki’s ears and he smiles softly.
“i figured we could climb to the roof and smoke some. also because i don’t want iida to catch me in here again,” he explains as he watches you set the flowers on your desk.
“hmm i thought you had something to ask me,” you tease and giggle as he flushes red and begins to stutter.
“uh i-i do, i just, well. i’m nervous,” he sighs and pouts slightly. you smile widely and wrap him in a hug.
“yeah denks we can go to the roof.”
ten minutes later, and the both of you are on the roof, sitting in the area you made specifically to smoke up here. the night sky is clear, the moon shining brightly with the stars twinkling behind it.
denki lights the first joint and takes a hit, for courage, before handing it to you. you share the first joint together in silence.
you know what he wants to ask, and you know your answers, you give him the time he needs to prepare himself and quietly wait for him to be ready.
“that time i thought you were booty calling me and i thanked toshi and sero,” he begins halfway through the second joint, his voice is soft but it still shocks you out of your thoughts.
your gaze floats from the stars to look at him sitting next to you. his eyes are red, a pink tint to his nose and cheeks. you hum and tilt your head, blowing the smoke in your lungs into the air above you.
“it was mostly a joke, but not really,” there’s a nervous chuckle as his gaze meets yours. “those two have been pushing me to tell you my real feelings since they found out about them.”
“denks,” you reach forward and grab his hand, his eyes follow your hand and he releases a shaky breath.
“i just never thought you felt the same, sure we flirt, like a lot. but i don’t know,” he shrugs, “you’re just so… you. smart, kind, attractive, out of my league for sure.”
“denki,” he squeezes your hand and you pause.
“i like you y/n, a lot. and i, i want to ask if you uh…” he takes a deep breath and makes eye contact again.
“will you go out with me?”
you smile at him.
“yes denki, i’ll go out with you.”
he beams and releases the breath he was holding.
“really?”
“yes you dork, really.”
“uh cool cool.”
you laugh and move to rest your head on his shoulder.
“uh does this mean i’m your boyfriend now?” you snort and nod.
“yeah denks it means you’re my boyfriend now.”
a few moments of silence go by and you shiver.
“c’mon let’s go back inside, it’s late.” he says and helps you stand up.
the two of you stand in front of the door to your dorm room, your hand in his as he stares at you.
“goodnight denks,” you smile at him, his head tilts to the side.
“can i kiss you?”
you nod. he leans in, head tilting down forwards you as his hands slide to your waist. your arms come up around his shoulders as he pulls your body in.
“this okay?”
“perfectly okay.”
your lips meet in a soft kiss and you melt in his arms. he pulls you in tighter and brings one hand to grab the back of your neck, holding you steady.
tilting your head, you slide your tongue across his bottom lip and the power in the building goes out as he short circuits.
you pull back with a gasp at the electric tingle in your mouth before laughing once you notice the dark hallway and the blank look on his face.
“kaminari!” iida’s voice rings out in the hallway and sero appears behind denki. you shake your head with a laugh and sero smirks knowingly.
“i’ll get him back to his dorm,” sero whispers.
“thanks,” you say before pressing one last kiss to denki’s cheek.
“goodnight denks.” you step into your dorm.
the last thing you hear before closing the door is sero’s chuckle and denki’s scattered mumbles, you fall asleep with a smile that night.

Ever since he was rescued by All Might from All For One, Shimura Tenko's led a charmed life - except that he's a beta, in a society where alphas are privileged, omegas are prioritized, and betas are an afterthought. But when Tenko finds himself investigating a series of designation-swaps that have devastated the lives of the victims, he comes face to face with the terrible truths at the heart of society's placid, inflexible structure, and the enigmatic villain who's bent on exposing it all. Divorce epidemic: Small town in Okayama Prefecture experiences 200% increase in no-fault petitions since previous reporting period Designation dysphoria? Psychologists in Hyogo Prefecture report an increasingly prevalent set of delusions Google search: can designations change The urban legend that just won’t die: No, you can’t change your designation. Google search: my designation changed Suicide rate spikes in Kagawa Prefecture; threefold increase over the course of a month Government forms task force to investigate reported declines in suppressant effectiveness From Omega to Alpha: Chart-topping idol tells all about stunning transformation!
Google search: change designation back
Tenko’s already late when he wakes up, and the fact that he Decays his alarm clock out of spite doesn’t improve things much. He has a hell of a lot to do before work. He knew that last night, but that didn’t stop him from playing League of Legends until three am with Spinner and Twice, and now he’s paying for it. Tenko changes into street clothes, stuffs a frozen waffle into his mouth, and books it out the door.
He’s back before he can even make it to the elevator, because his medication reminder starts freaking out. He forgot his suppressants, like he does about every other day, and he probably wouldn’t take them at all if he didn’t have an alarm set. Tenko thinks it’s bullshit that he has to take suppressants. He’s a beta, not some alpha or omega who’s constantly at risk of going into heat or rut and sending the office into meltdown mode. There’s no reason for him to take this stupid pill every day.
But Tenko’s a beta, and it’s not worth it. He’ll get busted if he fails a blood test, same as anybody else. He swallows the damn thing dry, grabs another frozen waffle, and races back to the elevator.
He checks his phone on the way and sees that he forgot to log off the hero network again, which means his screen is covered in expired alert notifications — most of them yellow, a few of them orange. He swipes them away rather than reading through them. Angsting about everything that happened while he was off duty is All Might behavior, and Tenko’s number one rule for maintaining work-life balance is taking note of what All Might does and doing the exact opposite.
For off-duty behavior, at least. When Tenko’s out in the street, he’s on duty, and that means that when he hears the screech of metal on metal followed by hideous crunching noises and car alarms going off, he picks up the pace and runs a block and a half to get there first. Just like All Might would do.
It’s a car accident. Two cars, one flipped, one wrapped around a streetlight, and at least one person’s been thrown clear. Tenko drops his backpack and goes to them first, assessing the basics for their injuries. They aren’t breathing well — their chest is rising and falling lopsided — and the air around them is flooded with alpha pheromones and panic. If it was some alpha bullshit that caused this accident —
“Help,” the alpha gasps, and Tenko’s about to tell her he’s still assessing when she elaborates. “My husband — in the car — he’s pregnant —”
Great. Nobody stays calm when babies are involved, and Tenko’s still the only one on the scene. He looks around for the nearest bystander, orders them to call emergency services, and addresses the crowd that’s gathering. “Anybody here with life support training?” A couple of hands go up, and Tenko assigns roles at random. “You, grab an AED. Every store on this block should have one. You two, get over here. Get ready to start CPR.”
He waits for them to move, then races over to the car that hit the streetlight. Just like the injured alpha, the omega victim is flooding the scene, bad enough to make Tenko cough — but even as his eyes stream, his mind stays clear. He Decays the broken window on the passenger side and addresses the victim. “My name’s Shimura Tenko. I’m a pro hero and I’m here to help you.”
Most heroes are alphas with a few omegas mixed in, but All Might’s adamant that betas make the best rescue heroes, and Tenko agrees. Alphas and omegas are vulnerable to pheromone releases no matter how many suppressants they’re on, but Tenko could be surrounded by enough overlapping clouds of pheromones to choke an air purifier and still keep a clear head. Alphas make a situation volatile, omegas defer if there’s an alpha anywhere in the mix, even if it’s the wrong thing to do. For high-stakes rescue heroics, where lives are on the line, betas do it better than anybody else. It’s about all betas are good for.
If that’s all Tenko’s good for, he’ll take it. He does a visual assessment of the victim’s injuries — as much as he can with the way the car’s crumpled — then remembers there’s a second car. “I have to check the other victim. I’ll be right back,” Tenko says, and the omega seizes his arm. An alpha wouldn’t be able to resist what the omega’s putting out, but Tenko’s able to free his arm without trouble. “I’m not leaving. I’ll be right back. Count back from a hundred for me, okay? By threes. I’ll be back before you’re done.”
The driver of the second car is dead. They weren’t wearing a seatbelt and they’re crumpled against the windshield, but Tenko checks the brachial and radial pulses just to be sure. Is there anyone else in the car? He hears muffled crying, Decays the back passenger window, and peers in.
Fuck. There are kids. Two of them. Both buckled in, both bleeding, neither of them with crush injuries, which means it’s safe to get them out. Tenko Decays the door, too, then wedges himself into position to catch the first kid once their seatbelt’s off. The kid flops down into Tenko’s arms, and Tenko supports their head and shoulders, trying to figure out how to maneuver them out of the car.
“We’ve got him!” There’s an EMT out there, with a stretcher and another one coming closer. “Pass him out and get the other one!”
Works for Tenko. He wedges himself further into the car. The second kid is freaking out a lot worse than the other one, and Tenko realizes that this is going to be a more complicated rescue in a hurry. This kid’s quirk is active. And given that she looks to be about six years old, the likelihood that she can retract the claws sprouting from between her knuckles when she’s this scared is pretty low.
Tenko’s been a kid with a dangerous quirk. He knows the drill. “I’m going to get you out of there,” he promises. “I need you to do something for me first. Make an X with your arms like this so your claws stay pointed out. I’m going to unbuckle you —”
“I’ll fall!”
“I’ll catch you. That’s why I’m here.” Tenko knows better than to put on an All Might-style grin. “Cross your arms — perfect — and count to three for me. We’ll go on three.”
“One,” the girl sobs. “Two —”
Tenko Decays her seat, seatbelt and all, and catches her. He kicks out the window on the other side, passes her through it to another pair of EMTs, then crawls out the way he came in. By this point there’s an incident commander, somebody Tenko recognizes vaguely, and he heads her way. “What’s next?”
“We can’t get the victim out of that car,” she says. “His legs are crushed. It’ll be a miracle if he makes it to the hospital, but he won’t if they have to spend an hour cutting him out. Can you —”
“Tell them to get ready. I’ve got this.”
The victim’s got enough people comforting him that he doesn’t get mad at Tenko for leaving and not coming back, so Tenko ignores him and searches for a starting point. He needs to do this fast. Once the EMTs are in position, Tenko plants both hands on the hood and activates Decay at full strength.
He used to think his quirk was evil, that nothing good could come out of destruction, but he knows better now. There’s no such thing as a good quirk or an evil quirk. It’s about how you use it, and as Tenko uses his to free the omega victim from the totaled car and deliver him into the hands of the EMTs, he remembers all over again that his quirk is a good thing. Or at least it can be. Tenko sticks around until the ambulances have left, confirms that the cleanup crew don’t want him to get rid of the cars, and hits the road before the press can put in an appearance. He’s even later to work than he was already going to be, but he has a feeling his boss won’t mind.
There was never really a question about where Tenko would go after he graduated from UA — All Might’s agency, because nowhere else would take a beta hero and it was where he wanted to go anyway. Tenko should probably be a little less shameless about cashing in on the benefits of being raised as All Might’s ward, but he also knows All Might is pretty sensitive to his help being rejected, and after everything he’s done for Tenko, the least Tenko can do is make him happy by accepting a few perks.
Tenko’s a hero because of All Might. Tenko’s alive because of All Might. If All Might hadn’t killed All For One almost fourteen years ago, Tenko would still be under his thumb. Still thinking he was built to destroy, still carrying around Tomura as his name. Tomura. The one who brings mourning. Tenko remembers explaining his new name to All Might in the hospital after he was rescued, and he remembers how All Might’s famous smile shifted into a teeth-clenched grimace. You can pick any name you want, he said to Tenko. Except that one.
In the end, Tenko fell back on his old name, the one his parents gave him before they realized he was a beta and therefore a disappointment. What he did to his family is hard to live with, still. On his bad days, Tenko believes every word Sensei ever told him, and some part of him always will. The rest of the time, the rest of him knows better.
He’s barely set foot on the training floor in Might Tower before Twice tackles him. “Hey! Shimura! Saw you on the news —”
Tenko grimaces and breaks Twice’s grip. “I got out of there way before the cameras got there.”
“People were filming,” Spinner announces, putting Tenko in an instant headlock. All Might must have ordered them to jump him. “The HPSC reposted the video —”
“And it’s already been played ten thousand times!” Midoriya reports from somewhere far away from Tenko. His natural quirk is good for fuck all against Tenko, and All Might doesn’t want him using One For All against anybody but villains. “It’s excellent press!”
“Somebody died,” Tenko says. He winds Spinner with an elbow to the gut and twists free. “They shouldn’t put that on the news.”
“You should have become an underground hero if you wanted your exploits to stay off the news,” Tobita says. He’s keeping his distance, or else Tenko would bite the Twice clone that’s holding him and go kick his ass. “And if you’re going to do hero work in street clothes, you might want to put a little more thought into your look.”
Tenko finally shakes free of his friends and looks down at himself. “What’s wrong with it?”
“It’s tragic that you have to ask,” Tobita says, and sighs dramatically. “Then again, you are a beta. Maximizing attractiveness isn’t at the top of your priorities list.”
Tenko grits his teeth. “Are you sure you aren’t gay?”
“I’m waiting until I’ve found my mate. Then we’ll see.”
If Tenko talks to an alpha or an omega long enough, mating inevitably come up. It’s why he hangs out with betas when he can. Betas don’t talk about ruts, because they don’t have them, and they don’t talk about heats because they don’t have those either, and they don’t care about finding mates in general. Whatever the difference is between betas and everybody else, it strips away the desire to couple up and reproduce along with the fertility. Or at least it’s supposed to.
Tenko thought everybody felt the way he does and was just embarrassed to talk about it. It took him until a few months ago to realize that his fellow betas aren’t secretly yearning for a mate. It’s not an unspoken beta-designation thing. There’s legitimately something wrong with Tenko’s brain, something he’s never going to mention to anyone ever again. He doesn’t give a shit about having kids. It’s probably best for everybody if his quirk dies with him. But his stupid ass is out here yearning anyway, and yearning in the worst possible way. There aren’t even any female betas – betas are all male, and Tenko’s straight. Female alphas want omegas, and female omegas want alphas. Tenko and his fucking yearning are stuck together for the rest of his life.
Tenko doesn’t think about it very much. His life is good. He’s gotten really lucky, multiple times, so much that he could almost call his life charmed if he hadn’t stumbled into it after accidentally killing his family and being kidnapped and brainwashed by a monster. If yearning for a mate is the only thing that’s wrong with Tenko, Tenko has it pretty fucking easy.
All Might arrives, finally, and rescues Tenko from the middle of a pile of Twice clones, giving him a bone-cracking hug. “Well done,” he says, and lets Tenko go. “Gather ‘round, everyone. Today’s assignments are in. As you know, our agency is unique, and there are places for each and every one of your unique talents to protect and serve others!”
All Might’s agency used to just be him and his sidekick, Sir Nighteye. Sir Nighteye didn’t approve of All Might taking Tenko in — he called it letting in a stray — and All Might took it so personally that he turned letting in the strays into his agency’s entire policy. Almost everybody, from the heroes to the support staff to the PR department to the maintenance guys, is somebody who somebody else threw away. People like Twice, who went from the foster system straight to jail. People like Spinner, who grew up in a shit town that treats mutant-type quirks like trash. People like Magne, who’s trans, and Toga, whose quirk scares people, and even Tobita, whose failure to launch fast enough out of high school would have kept him from being a hero. Betas and omegas, people whose designations get them almost uniformly rejected from hero academies across the country, are the majority. The news calls All Might’s agency ‘eclectic’. The tabloids call it a freak show.
The hero community’s gotten used to it. All Might’s always fielding requests for team-ups or visits, so much so that he has to sort through them and pick just a few. Twice and Tobita get a PR visit — going to a foster home to meet the kids and talk about heroes and quirks. Spinner has a surveillance job, like usual, and Toga’s headed down to the hospital like she almost always is. Everybody else gets farmed out to other agencies, until it’s just Tenko and Midoriya and two pieces of paper in All Might’s hand.
He glances at one of them and sighs. “This was for young Todoroki, from Hawks, but unfortunately he’s, uh, indisposed.”
“Again? He was in heat two weeks ago,” Tenko says. He remembers — he got a bunch of horny texts from Touya, because Touya apparently forgets how to read when he’s in heat and thought he was sending them to Hawks or his other alpha fuckbuddy. “He’s making it up for more vacation time.”
“He’s not! Some people experience rapid cycling,” Midoriya, also an omega, pipes up. “It’s very difficult to control. He’s probably not having fun.”
“And everyone at my agency gets the same amount of vacation time,” All Might reminds Tenko. Tenko rolls his eyes. “No designation is privileged over the others here.”
No, but if Tenko took a week off of work just to fuck, everybody would have questions about that. “Which of us is getting sent to Hawks instead?”
“We aren’t able to meet that request,” All Might says. He looks at the last piece of paper. “Young Midoriya, you’ll stay here at dispatch. Tenko, you and I have been summoned to Shiroiwa, in Kagawa prefecture.”
That name sounds familiar. Tenko can’t remember why, but he’s never against an away mission. The fact that All Might hasn’t said what it is means it’s confidential, which means Tenko can lord it over Midoriya later that he got to do something cool while Midoriya minds the desk. “Sounds good.”
It’s eight hours to Kagawa by car, four and a half by Shinkansen, but in All Might’s jet, which All Might takes on long trips so he won’t bring traffic to a standstill, it’s a cool hour and a half. Tenko’s not at all interested in climbing the charts, but he has to admit that there are perks to being in the top 10. Like no crying babies on the plane, and snacks. Tenko’s frozen waffles this morning feel like a distant memory. He starts raiding the pantry.
“Tenko,” All Might says, and Tenko looks up. “I meant what I said. Your work this morning was exemplary. You should be proud.”
“I was just who was there.”
“I’m proud of you,” All Might says. “Even if you aren’t proud of yourself.”
He studies Tenko for a moment. “Is something wrong?”
“No.”
“Let me try again. Something’s wrong. What is it?” All Might asks. Tenko shakes his head. “I’ve known you since you were eight years old, and lying’s not your strong point. What’s going on?”
There’s no way Tenko’s bringing this up to All Might. But he needs to tell All Might something, or All Might won’t let it go. Tenko picks a topic at random. “My phone yelled at me because I forgot to take my suppressants this morning. I’m sick of taking them.”
All Might’s expression shifts in sympathy. “Are you experiencing side effects? There are multiple brands —”
“No, they’re fine. I just don’t want them,” Tenko says. All Might raises an eyebrow. “I’m not a hypocrite. Alphas and omegas not taking theirs fucks them and everybody else over, but nobody suffers if I stop taking mine except some big pharma exec who won’t make money off my prescription. I shouldn’t have to blood test once a month at random like the alphas and omegas do if I’m not the problem. It’s bullshit and you know it.”
All Might sits down in the seat across from Tenko’s. “It’s true,” he says. “Alphas and omegas off their suppressants are a disaster. You’ve read your history. Society’s most significant advancements didn’t occur until after primitive suppressants were developed and distributed. Suppressants provide for a stable society.”
“Yeah, but —”
“And even knowing that,” All Might continues, “alphas and omegas don’t want to take them. Someone needs to set an example.”
“An example,” Tenko repeats. “I have to pop pills my whole life to set a good example?”
“If a rule applies to everyone, no one can claim they’re being unfairly singled out,” All Might points out. He steals a cookie out of the package Tenko just opened. “Betas frequently set a good example. You set one during your rescue today.”
“By doing something.”
“By proving it could be done,” All Might says. “Think about how an alpha or omega hero would have handled those victims and that scene.”
Tenko doesn’t need to think about it. He’s seen it. “Alpha commands,” he says. “And omegas do that weird thing where they’re, like — hitting on you —”
“Platonic seduction,” All Might says, which is one hell of a contradiction in terms. “These approaches both have something in common. What is it?”
“Is this a trick question?”
“No.” All Might eats another one of Tenko’s cookies. “Think about it. They have the same end goal as you did — a controlled scene, calm victims —”
“Except they’re doing it by force,” Tenko says. All Might nods. “You’re saying my way is better.”
“Yes,” All Might says. “Adding extra force to an already stressful scene increases the potential for chaos, particularly given the diverging reactions of each designation to those uses of force — and yet, the prevailing wisdom is still that heroes should use force in controlling a scene.”
“That’s not what you do,” Tenko mutters.
All Might smiles halfway. “I’m not an alpha.”
Everybody thinks All Might’s insistence on training beta and omega heroes is some weird fixation, because they can’t imagine All Might being anything but an alpha. But All Might isn’t an alpha. He’s a beta, just like Tenko is, so he knows it’s possible for a beta to be a hero. “Everyone assumes my ability to control scenes without force is unique to me. You proved that others can do it, too. That makes it much harder to ignore as the preferred strategy.”
“Yeah, yeah. Betas make the world go round, as usual,” Tenko says. He manages to grab one cookie before All Might eats the last one. “I still don’t want the pills.”
All Might sighs. “Are you unhappy with your designation, Tenko?”
“No,” Tenko says. He never envies alphas or omegas, except when he thinks about being alone for the rest of his life. “It’s just a pain in the ass.”
“Indeed,” All Might agrees. “But the fact that you’re a beta is why you’re on this mission and my successor is minding a desk.”
“Huh?”
“Here.” All Might picks up a folder and slides it across the table to Tenko. “I saw your expression. When I mentioned Shiroiwa, it meant something to you.”
“That’s the town where the suicide rate blew up,” Tenko says. “They think heroes should be investigating this?”
“At the moment, it’s not clear what this is,” All Might says. “No one will talk about what happened. It’s the opinion of earlier investigators that shame and distrust are keeping them quiet. They need to see people they can trust, who don’t provoke the sort of intense emotions that alphas and omegas do.”
Betas. “So we’re supposed to interview people about their dead relatives?”
“We’re supposed to interview anyone,” All Might says. “My presence will draw them out. Officially, I’m here to provide support and comfort in this trying time. It’s your job to talk to anyone who will speak and try to discern exactly what happened here. Prior to the first four suicides, which all occurred on the same day, Shiroiwa hadn’t seen a death by suicide in seven years. It’s hard to imagine there wasn’t a precipitating event.”
“Talk to people, figure out what happened,” Tenko says. “You sure you don’t want Midoriya?”
“People who are suffering need to feel listened to and understood,” All Might says. “As evidenced by how you brought so many people who’d previously felt invisible to the agency, the person in my agency best equipped to do that is you.”
Shiroiwa feels haunted. Tenko’s not superstitious, but there’s no other word for it. Something bad happened here, and he needs to figure out what it is so it can’t happen anywhere else. People are slow to talk. Tenko asks them how they’re doing, and it’s fifteen minutes of small talk before anything starts to come out. But once it does, Tenko starts to get a picture of things. Or at least where things started. Everybody who’s killed themselves attended a school festival the week before the first death.
“Did anything weird happen at the festival?” he asks, over and over again. “Or not weird. Even just something that stood out?”
Nobody has a good answer. It’s two hours into the event before someone tells Tenko what happened to some of the people who killed themselves. She’s weird about it, too. Embarrassed, even though she has her face covered. She beckons Tenko away from the others and keeps her voice low, so he has to lean in. “Their designations changed,” she says. “Alphas to betas, omegas to alphas, betas to — anything. Anybody to anything. You knew who it happened to. The scents switched on a dime.”
Designation switching is an urban legend. Or something that happens in porn. Tenko keeps nodding, anyway, and the woman keeps talking. “People who it happened to, they got shunned. Like it was contagious. Maybe it is. I don’t know.”
“Did everybody who got switched kill themselves?” Tenko asks, and she shakes her head. “Was there any pattern to who did or didn’t — or who was affected —”
“No kids,” the woman says. “It was a school festival. The place was covered with kids, but none of them got swapped. Only adults. And as far as who killed themselves and who didn’t — I don’t know. I don’t know why some of them survived it.”
“Can you point to anybody who did?” Tenko asks, and she points to herself.
Now he gets why she’s hiding. If they’re treating people with the switch like they’re contagious, then no wonder. “Come with me,” Tenko says, and she shakes her head. Her original designation and swapped designation don’t matter, but Tenko can’t tell what she is now. “If you talk to All Might, you can explain what you just told me, and we can stop this from happening again.
“Stop it? You don’t even know what started it.” The masked woman shakes her head. “I have to go.”
“Wait.” Tenko catches her arm. It doesn’t matter if she’s crazy — she’s the only lead, and if she got her designation switched, they can confirm it. Her hand closes over his and forces him to let go. “Look, if you won’t come explain, point to somebody else who got switched. Nobody’s going to believe this designation-switching thing without proof. You know that.”
She nods. Beckons Tenko closer again. “Look for Minami Mizuho, Motobuchi Tadakatsu, Shimizu Takako, and Hatagami Arisa. They were too embarrassed to talk. They sent me.”
“Thank you,” Tenko says. “If you’re right about this — what you just told me is going to help a lot of people. Even if it was hard to talk about.”
“It’s weird that it’s so hard to talk about,” the woman says. She’s about Tenko’s age, huddled inside a coat that’s too big for her. “Nobody can be quiet about designations most of the time. Except when they change.”
“Yeah,” Tenko agrees. “It’s probably scary.”
“Scary?”
“Yeah. Saying it makes it real.”
The woman thinks about it for a moment, then shakes her head. “It’s real enough for them,” she says. “Ask them.”
Tenko gets to it. Finds the people she named in the crowd, talks to all of them, and doesn’t remember until he and All Might are back on the plane that he never asked for his source’s name.

“fuyumi invited me to dinner this weekend. she says everybody will be there. your mom, natsuo, and shoto. i think he might also be there, she didn’t say but i could tell by the look on her face. i told her i’d think about it,” you sit on the uncomfortable plastic chair in the bland white room.
the only sounds are the beeping and the raspy shutters of the life support machine that is keeping touya alive.
“do you think i should go?” you're silent as you wait for him to answer. fuyumi had told you that you would be the only one to visit him today, meaning he’d be able to answer you if he wanted.
“that’s up to you.” his voice is raspier than you’ve ever heard it before, you know it’s because he’s burned his vocal cords beyond repair.
“i don’t think he likes me very much. he always glares at me,” you explain and watch the roll of his eyes as he lets out a scoff.
“i’m serious, he never liked me as a kid because i’m quirkless. i’m pretty sure it’s still the same. i know he only puts up with me because your mom forces him to since i’m friends with all of you four.” you assume the garbled sound that leaves him is a laugh and it makes you chuckle in turn.
“i miss those days,” he sighs and you smile nostalgically, as a kid you’d go to his house after school some days and nearly every weekend to play with him, fuyumi and natsuo.
you were their neighbor and the same age as fuyumi who you quickly became friends with, and grew incredibly close to touya. so close that you developed a crush on him at five years old, though you’d never admit to it.
“yeah,” you sigh while looking over to the machine encasing him, “me too.”
it’s been almost two weeks since you last went to visit touya, work has been keeping you busy lately and you’re finding it hard to make time for him.
you have tomorrow off and have made the plans to go see him, fuyumi already knows and is making sure nobody else will go see him so that you can have the whole day with him.
it’ll be nice, you think, to see him and spend an entire day without having to worry about leaving if his family shows up.
you love them you do, but sometimes it’s nice to just be with touya.
“you should tell him how you feel,” fuyumi’s voice sounds from your phone as you make your way into the facility where touya is.
“does everybody know?” you groan out, stepping to the check in desk and writing your name down.
“everybody except him,” fuyumi laughs, “you’ve been in love with him since we were five it’s not hard to miss.”
you scoff, of course it isn’t. it’s not like you hid it, but admitting it isn’t as easy as it seems. you have no idea whether he feels the same, and the fear that he might not make it out of the facility is what keeps you from telling him.
“i’m just scared yumi, what if he doesn’t feel the same?” you pause to take a breath as you enter the elevator.
“what if he does?” she responds,
“ok well what if he doesn’t get better? i don’t want to get my heartbroken,” you explain through a heavy sigh.
“and what if this is the push he needs to get better?” she’s always been the logical one.
“i’ll think about it, but i’m here. i’ll talk with you later,” you say your goodbyes as you approach his room.
you smile as his eyes flicker towards you when you enter the room.
“i know you can’t have any but i brought soba to eat. figured it might cheer you up a bit since it is the day before your birthday.” he rolls his eyes and scoffs as you sit in the uncomfortable plastic chair.
“i’m sorry i haven’t come to see you, works been keeping me busy.” you sigh and take a bite of the soba you brought.
he only grunts in return and you sit in silence for a while.
“will you be here tomorrow?” his voice startles you out of your thoughts.
“i might come after your family, i don’t want to be around your father.” you explain and he makes a humming sound.
the silence stretches another few minutes before he coughs violently, you’re by his side immediately to check if he’s alright.
“are you okay? i mean obviously you aren’t but i fuck i’m bad at this.” you ramble on and he chuckles deeply, or at least he tries to.
“i’m as good as i can be.” his eyes meet yours and you feel your knees weaken. his eyes were always your favorite.
“do you want me to go?” you ask, he gives a slight shake of his head.
“just sit with me for a while.” he whispers and you do.
you spend the rest of your visit rambling to him about the last two weeks and he listens in silence, giving an answer here and there.
he’s asleep by the time your visit is over and you smile softly at his sleeping form.
you stand to leave, leaning over the machine to get a look at his face.
“goodnight touya, i love you.” you whisper and gather your stuff to leave.
you miss the twitch of his eyelids as you walk out.
you see him the next day for his birthday, surrounded by his family. and although his father is there too, you’re able to manage being around him for touya.
it’ll be another week before you can see him again, so you enjoy the time you have today.
the night of his birthday, you dream of another life.
in the dark of the night, when the people sleep and the city is quiet, on a rooftop under the clear sky, two figures sit and watch the stars.
“if you had the chance to go back and redo things, would you change anything or keep it all the same?” a whispered voice carries in the wind, a chill running through his veins.
there’s a soft humming sound that filters in the air, an acknowledgment of the question and his head tilts as he processes your words. the stars blink at him in anticipation, silently awaiting his answer.
“i don’t know.”
his voice is meager, afraid to speak any louder and scare you away again. but it’s clearer than you’ve ever heard it before.
“do you?”
such a simple question yet the answer is anything but.
he draws in a breath at your silence.
“i think i would change one thing.”
a pause, he turns to look at you.
“i’d fighter harder not to lose you.”
he smiles softly and gently tucks a strand of hair behind your ear. you continue to stare at the sky, afraid it’ll all disappear if you move.
“y/n… you lose me no matter what you do.”
you sigh and his touch is gone just as quickly as you felt it.
glancing to where he sits, you choke back a sob, he’s already fading as the light from the sun starts to rise.
“i know.” you feel like you can’t breathe as the words force their way past your lips.
he smiles. it’s broken.
“i’m sorry.” your heart breaks as he speaks, you’re starting to forget what he sounds like, it’s been so long.
“i love you.” you reach for him, hoping, no praying, that you can touch him, feel him one last time before he slips from your grasp again.
“i know.” he never says it back and you know it’s because your brain can’t imagine what the words sound like on his lips, never having heard them before, even if you confessed while he was alive.
not even your dreams can bring you solace as you watch him fade completely, your body jolting upright in the sweat soaked sheets you lay.
the tears are steadily streaming down your face, you do nothing to stop them as the sun crests over the horizon and the light sneaks into your room.
“why’d you have to go?”
there’s no answer. there’s never been one, but you’ve always known his motivations.
“i had another dream of you last night,” you sit cross legged on the grass, the wind blowing softly in response to your words. as if filling the silence in place of an answer.
“this time we sat on the roof watching the stars, like we did when we were kids,” you sigh, the tombstone across from you reading touya’s name.
‘dabi’ is written in smaller letters beneath, your idea as you knew he would’ve liked that over touya but his father insisted on using his given name.
it had taken fuyumi, natsuo, and shoto just to get him to agree, but you knew touya would be happy wherever he was.
“i told you i loved you in this one, before it ended the same as the others. with you fading away as the sun rose, and me jolting awake with tears streaming down my face.” it’s just you visiting him today, and somehow it feels better than visiting him in the facility.
he passed away after his birthday, a couple days before you had the chance to see him again. you got the call from shoto, fuyumi too distraught to be able to tell you.
hearing the words from shoto’s monotone voice made it hurt worse than you imagine hearing it from fuyumi’s voice would’ve.
“i still can’t believe you’re gone. it’s been a year now, it feels like just yesterday you were turning twenty-four,” your voice shakes as your arms wrap around yourself.
“i never thought there’d be a time where i was older than you,” the tears don’t come as quickly anymore but they still come.
“i miss you so much touya. why’d you have to do it?” you plead as if the stone would provide an answer.
you sigh heavily and stand, dusting yourself off to leave.
“i love you,” the wind that blows is warm, a gentle caress around your body and you imagine it as his arms wrapping you in a hug. a silent i love you too, his final comfort to you.
your eyes blur as you leave, you don’t visit him again after that.
