This is me tossing a vague shrug in the direction of “fanfic isn’t real writing” argument because it’s based on a misunderstanding of genre.

Fanfic is its own genre with its own conventions from how fics are sorted: have you ever seen a lit magazine categorize a short story as ‘fluff’? Because I haven’t and you never see fics categorized by bookshop genres either.

Fic has its own rules around the expectation of conflict. You can write a 70 000 word fic in which there is no conflict. I never have but it could be done. I have a 40 000 word smut fic where NOTHING happens but it flies as fic because the rules for fic are different.

Fic has its own rules around interacting and commenting: “I hate you and I want to die” is pretty nearly the highest compliment that you can receive on a fic but is not something I could see myself writing in a letter to my favourite author.

Fic is writing in its own culture.

If someone says “fanfic isn’t real writing” to you then they’re telling you that they don’t understand fanfic and no amount of meticulously researched writing is going to change their mind. Your writing being perfect won’t change their mind.

When “those people” talk about fic, they will forever be talking about stuff like My Immortal and never about stuff like Speranza or dirgewithoutmusic or (for an in-fandom writer) metawohoo. They don’t care about the best that fic has to offer. They’re looking for a reason to reduce the entire thing down to “teenage girls are weird - look at the weird thing they’re doing”

So why bother appeasing them?

A love story where the two protagonists just refuse to fall for each other even though the plot keeps pushing for it.

It is always important to know when something has reached its end. Closing circles, shutting doors, finishing chapters, it doesn’t matter what we call it; what matters is to leave in the past those moments in life that are over.

My mission, should I choose to accept it, is to find peace with exactly who and what I am. To take pride in my thoughts, my appearance, my talents, my flaws and to stop this incessant worrying that I can’t be loved as I am.

Kiyoshi: There will come a time when you have a chance to do the right thing.

Hanamiya: I love those moments. I like to wave at them as they pass by.

the two methods of fic writing:

don’t think don’t breathe don’t question where the inspiration came from just wriTE LIKE THE WIND BEFORE IT LEAVES

meticulously plan the plot out until you actually have to write the story and then struggle and suffer

bonus method: no inspiration OR plot just an idea that you want to keep working on but you just stare at the screen blankly with tears running slowly down your face

After every game, my former teammates kept asking me why Kagami-kun could jump so high. Kise-kun wondered if there was a trick to it that he could copy. Midorima-kun thought it was special training. Akashi-kun asked which higher power we bribed to get the ability, and what pentagram we used to summon it. I won’t even repeat what Aomine-kun said, because it was too stupid, even compared to Akashi-kun. The truth is, Kagami-kun gets a huge elevation bonus from his moral high ground, an advantage the Generation of Miracles will never, ever have.

do you ever think about how fucking wild the premise of hetalia even is though like there are these (alarmingly) consistently attractive immortal beings that represent the soul and state of a country and they’re gifted with weird abilities like magic or hella strength and then they just spend their days having petty playground arguments with each other

Please, don’t worry so much. Because in the end, none of us have very long on this Earth. Life is fleeting. And if you’re ever distressed, cast your eyes to the summer sky when the stars are strung across the velvety night. And when a shooting star streaks through the blackness, turning night into day… make a wish and think of me. Make your life spectacular. I know I did.”

Breathe. You’re going to be okay. Breathe and remember that you’ve been in this place before. You’ve been this uncomfortable and anxious and scared, and you’ve survived. Breathe and know that you can survive this too. These feelings can’t break you. They’re painful and debilitating, but you can sit with them and eventually, they will pass. Maybe not immediately, but sometime soon, they are going to fade and when they do, you’ll look back at this moment and laugh for having doubted your resilience. I know it feels unbearable right now, but keep breathing, again and again. This will pass. I promise it will pass.

þ!

A feature of English which I think is stupid,

If we’re carrying on with this game,

Is how we abolished the thorn and replaced it,

With two letters that meant the same.

The þ was a letter, amazing, astounding,

Perfect in every respect,

Representing the ‘th’ sound and shortening words,

The one thing it didn’t expect;

One day T and H went and burgled its meaning,

And then, thanks to the printing press,

Its symbol mutated and morphed into Y,

Which is pointless, I must confess.

Þoughtlessly, the þ was forgotten,

Þreatened as the language evolved,

Þankful for þose who knew of old English,

A topic where it was involved.

It only survived in Modern Icelandic,

In English it’s treated with scorn,

And as barely anyone knows it exists,

Please try to remember the thorn.
