Wayyyy later than what I expected to finish, I'm finally finished with my Payneland fencing fic! Thank you so much to everybody that offered themselves as my beta, I really appreciate that!

Relationships: Edwin Payne/Charles Rowland, Edwin Payne & Charles Rowland (the fic focus on their friendship specifically, the romance is just an ending bonus).

Trigger warnings: blades/ fencing, dysfunctional gays, Charles that's so fucking gay you cannot say that to your platonic best friend,

Other stuff: fencer Edwin Payne, touch starved Charles & touch starved Edwin if you squint, love confession, hurt/comfort, eventual cuddling, teens being teens, slight miscommunication the first half of the fic, okay they're really miscommunicating at the start but it gets better don't worry!

Edwin and Charles' friendship come first before anything else, before any romantic feelings ever even started. This is why when shortly after Port Townsend when Charles is starting to act off and Edwin feels it's because of his confession affecting them, although Charles is denying the accusation, he confronts Charles to talk with him again the way they do things: He makes him fence with him.

And Charles can never tell Edwin no, is he? Or: Charles tried to isolate himself away from Edwin, Edwin couldn't let that stand. The boys being teenagers and fooling around fencing.

Based on my fencing history so I actually come with knowledge about that! I kinda took advantage of that for creating this fic.

I hope you'll like it! I really enjoyed writing it. Charles is my favourite out of them but damn fencer Edwin is ruining my brain.

One of the main things that annoys me in Helluva Boss (among the other problems of the show) is that they make Striker and his ideas look ridiculous but he actually got a fucking point.

His whole point is literally just being a low class person who wants equal rights. He's right- the rich and powerful abuse the poor, the system is rigged against his people, it's not fair.

Yeah Ozzie and Stolas are good, it doesn't mean they're not part of the problem of social hierarchies. They're not actively trying to change things, they're letting the problem still happen- even if they have a soft spot for Blitz and Fizz.

The system still sucks. And it's working against imps.

But he's a joke of a villain, his ideas not taken seriously and not explored beyond the first episode he appeared in.

He's not treated seriously as a character.

He's wrong in his ways of execution, but I admit- the man has a point.

He doesn't come close to being my favorite character from the show, the amount the show made him look ridiculous made me dislike him.

Liked him in the first episode but after it he was just an eh. But he has a fucking point.

From what I understood ghosts can feel other ghosts. Why don't you kiss Edwin?

I've always really loved cooking. Back when I was still alive I used to make the best spaghetti in the world, I swear. Oh, and my mum's Indian so she had the most bangin recipes ever. You hew arcaven't seen everything until you've had a proper plate of naan and paneer makhani I tell ya.

Summary:

From a very young age, Edwin knew he was different.

People were never easy for him. He was ‘sensitive’. Intense. Weirdly obsessed. It didn't help that his heart had always started racing around a particular boy from his fencing class.

The kids at St. Hilarion had never let him forget how different he was. They made it their mission to turn his life into a living hell for years- *before* they then sent him to actual hell.

No matter what he did, his mother always seemed to despise him.

He tried, he tried so hard to push through everything. He never asked to be different. But nothing ever worked.

One thing was abundantly clear: something was entirely wrong about Edwin Payne.

A glance at Edwin’s growing up in the Edwardian era, his life, death, and all the rest.

Edwin Payne always knew he was different, he was a disaster and a failure. Only a matter of time before Charles will realise and leave. He enters a panic attack thinking about his past.

Charles, however, thinks differently, and is intent on having none of that self hate his boyfriend seems to insist on.

I do love to think about all three versions of the dbda meeting but one thing I find extra funny is the concept of them fighting, like physically

with Charles: comic Charles would not last three seconds I’m sorry, if he wasn’t dead he’d die, we didn’t see much of doom patrol Charles but he seems pretty proficient with weapons so I’m guessing he and Netflix Charles would be evenly matched

with Crystal: honestly depends on the day, doom patrol Crystal could wack them with a shovel, Netflix Crystal could beat them with her bare hands and one of comic Crystal first actions is to burn down her school with a Molotov cocktail and chase a demon with knives, id give it to any of them tbh

but Edwin??? I’m sorry it goes to the twelve year old without question, the others are getting bodied, not even accounting the lightning spell that scrappy little shit would rugby tackle them to the ground and start beating, Charles would have to pull him off, maybe even two Charles’
