The phone rings just as Katrina Fingerson and Latoya McClary are about to leave to start their shift at the Goddard Riverside Community Center. It comes in on the line reserved for the 311 calls from concerned citizens and businesses who report homeless people on the streets, and the receptionist immediately starts scribbling down details. Male, pushing a shopping cart, clothes falling off, located at 39th Street and 3rd Avenue. The man falls into Fingerson and McClary’s territory –- anywhere from 42nd Street south to the water –- so he becomes their priority as they get in the car and drive uptown.

DoorDash workers are going on strike tomorrow (July 31st, 2021). They’re demanding tip transparency and a base pay of at least $4.25 per hour. Don’t cross the picket line.

Rethinking the Farming Economy

A Vermont nonprofit is connecting independent farms with buyers and distributors, reducing food surplus and working to eliminate food insecurity.

“It’s great to grow something and say, ‘Wow, I really like to grow this little one. I like to really grow this and sell it and try to make a living on it,’” Tisbert said. “Well, you’ve got to find a market. Everybody has to have a niche. People are trying to figure out where to go. How can I sell it?”

That’s where Salvation Farms comes in.

“When I can’t market the product, I have Salvation Farms,” said Tisbert, who has been working with the organization since 2006. “They show up, and I give them things that I can’t sell in a timely manner. I need to get it out the door because I need my space.”

Salvation Farms is part of the Vermont Gleaning Collective, which consists of a number of organizations that glean throughout the state.

Our fridge broke, defrosted, and let a bunch of meat and dairy spoil. We are now looking at having to replace an entire fridge & freezer's worth of food on the same weekend we have to take one of our cats to the emergency vet.

It is, ah. It is not my day today.

Y'all know I fucking hate doing this, but we do NOT have the money to replace all the spoiled food AND take the cat to the vet, and we can't NOT take the cat to the vet. She needs care.

Please, send this around if you can, and donate if you have a couple spare bucks. I've got folks depending on me to replace the food, and e-begging is about my only option.

This is for those who are curious and you all out in Ferguson. I’m going to be attaching some info graphics (one may seem needless due to circumstances but I’m adding it anyway.) I have some more info I’d like to put into a better to use format ( alot of them are screen grabs and I’d like to put in clearer and slur free language.) If you want me to send anything I got or any info I have ( I’m a Criminal Justice student) don’t hesitate to ask. 

I have seen a few of these but a post with them compiled may help more. I will be editing these as I get it all prepared I’ll use the Ferguson Protest Aid tag for any updates I do. Stay safe everyone.

I just have this mental image of like. All the Studio Ghibli characters in one room. Japanese schoolgirls, skinny pretty wizard boys, magical princesses, children, dragons, spirits, etc.

And then - off in one corner of the room - is Porco “I’d rather be a pig than a fascist” Rosso, swirling red wine in a stemless glass, visibly uncomfortable, and looking like a dad at an anime convention.
