When Privileged People Agree To Not Have Conversations About Oppression, Or To Drop The Subject As Soon

When privileged people agree to not have conversations about oppression, or to drop the subject as soon as it gets awkward or heated, think about the fact that the common ground that has been reached by all involved is that helping the oppressed avoid ongoing harm is not as important as the privileged avoiding temporary discomfort.

TW: Suicide -

-

-

- After a boy cut his arms and told a staff member he wanted to die, the staff member allowed him to shower unsupervised for forty minutes, without reporting his wounds or suicidal thoughts to anyone else. This staffer later said they "don't like" to read patients' backgrounds, and had not done so with this boy. This is why we need to take mental health seriously. It's not about being a coward or giving up- even when we fight it and seek medical attention, our condition is brushed off.

I was watching An American Tale with a friend, and to my delight, he pointed out that, as a Native, I can call most people "My Little Immigrant."

What Am I Overlooking?

Overlooked reasons for going to hell: Carrying on a conversation with someone after they have said goodbye (or other widely accepted sign-off term), as if you didn't hear them when you did. "Fixing" things about a person's appearance (bra strap, hair, etc) without asking. Answering the cellphone you didn't bother silencing in a library. Constantly putting other people's cups in the sink when they're not done using them.

I love learning little tidbits about real life in the Mormon Church. When my S.O. was a DJ for his Mormon youth gatherings in high school, he wasn't just a volunteer. It wasn't just a job they gave him. No, when they needed a new DJ, men from the church decreed that he was called upon by God to DJ the dances, and honest to fucking Christ, anointed him with oils so that he could answer God's call.

I Don't Claim To Be Certain About Many Things, But One Thing I'm One Hundred Per Cent Sure Of Is That

I don't claim to be certain about many things, but one thing I'm one hundred per cent sure of is that The Pythons wrote this scene as a metaphor for my relationship with Life.

"Those blankets look like there's a person under them. But my SO is downstairs, so obviously not. They're just lumped in a person-shape. I'm not that paranoid." *stomps on blankets to be sure*

Those Logical, Honorable People Who Remain Neutral.

People are so well-aware that not being held accountable is to the advantage of the perpetrator in situations of injustice that we have sayings built around this concept, such as "getting away with murder." But they still pretend to not understand that they're helping oppressors when they remain "neutral." You're full of shit. Stop lying.
