Aro Joy, 1/1 - it’s almost AUTUMN!!!! 🍁🎃🧣 ✨ (and I’m very excited lol, early fall is one of my favourite times of year 😂). Ok but back on topic - I’ve actually had a vision for this specific comic for … a while 😭 Like, half a year ago. It’s been a journey, accepting my arospec identity (and from what I’ve heard talking to y’all, it’s been like this for many of you too), and though I’ve been open about the bumpier parts of the experience, I wanted to also talk about the positives, all the joys of being aro, too 💚💚🐸
As a general disclaimer: The sentiments here aren’t meant to speak for all aros - because some aros want to be in romantic relationships (or be otherwise partnered), and of course this is equally valid and should be respected! And on the same note, allos can be happy with being, or just want to be single, because again - this isn’t something defined by orientation.
But I think for a lot of us, our arospec orientation can be tied to how feel about our lives in relation to partnership … which is that, we’re okay (or happy) being single! For the longest time, I held it against myself that I wasn’t in a relationship, but not because I wanted to be in one - I just thought it was a milestone that would make other people think of me as a ‘real’ adult 😭😭 Realizing I was aro gave me the opportunity to reassess how I viewed myself, and my relationships with other people. I was able to actually let go of that idea of having a “””missing piece”””, and appreciate everyone and everything I have in my life. I sound kinda cheesy saying this, but for the first time, I think I have everything I’ve ever wanted, relationships wise? I’m at peace, and I really appreciate it.
__
School’s gonna start soon for me and for some of y'all, so I hope that goes well for everyone! Please take care, and as always I’d love to hear what you think! What are your favourite things about being aro? 🐸
[Image Descriptions:
Slide 1: “I find it fascinating, the way alloromantics value romance.” Celia stands outside in front on a vibrant fall day. She seems to be on a walk on a trail.
Behind her, the leaves are a bright orange, and she is wearing a white wrapped top, jeans, and an orange ribbon choker.
Slide 2: “When I bring up the fact -”
A flashback to an earlier time, where Celia is talking to another girl (who is alloro). Celia says “You know, life without Romance is not inherently bad, or unfulfilling -”
The other girls says, “yeah, but it’s DIFFERENT.”
Slide 3: [Pure text] There’s this really deep, engrained idea, even amongst people who are accepting and understanding of the idea that being aromantic is valid, that romance brings a new level of joy to life. A kind of special fulfillment they would be lost without.
Slide 4: “And I’ve got to say …” Celia speaks to the viewer.
Slide 5: “That sounds really hard, yikes” She shrugs nonchalantly.
Slide 6: Celia speaks from the bottom of the panel, and a big speech bubble says, “People seem to have such a hard time with dating? Pining? Trying to court people? (I actually do not know much about romance, despite my love of the genre) It just seems like so much work, just to feel fulfilled.”
Extra doodles of character struggle with online dating, pining with writing love letters, and dollar bills with a rose exemplify the various struggles mentioned.
Slide 7: Shot switches back to Celia in the forest. She’s now holding a maple leaf in her hand, staring down at it contemplatively as she speaks. “I’m … actually feeling pretty good about my life.”
Slide 8: She holds the leaf up to the light now. “I don’t really feel like there’s something missing without a partner. Although, maybe one day -” In the bottom half of the panel, the perspective switches to her POV centered on her hand with the illuminated leaf, “I’d also be happy with a QPR.”
Slide 9: It’s one of the things that makes me grateful that I’m aro.
The shot has switched to be from behind Celia, staring out at the landscape of mountains, the fall foliage, and the river below. Celia has let go of the leaf and it drifts away in the wind]
Hey I'm new to the Danny Phantom fandom and I need some good fics. Got any good recommends?
First off, welcome to the fandom! And hon, I /got/ you.
Flu Shot: https://archiveofourown.org/works/20513513/chapters/48684473 (Sorry it’s not letting me put in links properly?? Anyway.) Unashamed self-advertisement, basically Danny finds out there is a more civilized part of the ghost zone and things go crazy from there.
How to Summon Eldritch Entities with Strawberry Jam by In_The_Ghost_Mode: https://archiveofourown.org/works/14146716 Summary; Listen, Danny didn’t ask for a summoning circle, alright? And if he’s going to get called at any time and place, he might as well wear whatever he wants, including arriving in his human form in his favorite PJs. Got it? Good.
Beyond Beasts by CatalystOfTheSoul: https://archiveofourown.org/works/8388307/chapters/19217140 Summary: Danny’s abilities are getting less reliable by the minute, Tucker can barely keep up with damage control, and it doesn’t help that Dash decided to tag along. There’s something fishy about this vacation, and it’s not the lake. The forest is playing tricks, water is appearing in places it shouldn’t, and there’s a vacancy expected at Algernon’s Summer Camp for Boys. (Dear reader, this is by-all-means intended as a ghost story for ghosts. Proceed with caution.) How You've
Changed by: thatgirl_youknowtheone: https://archiveofourown.org/works/11440641 Summary: Danny wasn’t a ghost, at least, not a ghost pretending to be their child. He was… he was still their child. He was just, wrong.
Shots Fired by RedHeadsRock1010: https://archiveofourown.org/works/16015694 Summary: School shooter meet Danny Fenton. Vlad Masters does not get paid enough to deal with this. (On a personal note this obviously has a school shooting but it has gallows humor so it’s not, straight-up traumatic but heads up and proceed with caution)
It’s Like Time Stops by anthrop: https://archiveofourown.org/works/1569932 Summary: Danny though, Danny was as average as anybody. He was nice (if a bit snarky), clever (if a bit naive), and once puberty stopped stretching him like a rubber band he might even be handsome one day. But then, not even halfway through his first semester at Casper High, Danny Fenton changed.
Silvertongue by proximally: https://archiveofourown.org/works/4044955 Summary: According to his friends and family, Danny is a terrible liar. Truth is, he’s lying about that.
Bloodsucker by: S.N. Rainsworth: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/7225350/1/Bloodsucker Summary: A few misconceptions causes the student population of Casper High to take a guess at the mystery that is Danny Fenton.
Phantom of Truth by: HaiJu: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/7476808/1/Phantom-of-Truth Summary: Locked away in a secret government lab with Phantom as her subject, nothing stands between Maddie and the truth… except, perhaps, herself. (Personal note, this is a phandom favorite, and while I should have had read it, I, in fact, did not)
Shadow of a Doubt by: HaiJu: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9683169/1/Shadow-of-a-Doubt Summary: The truth was supposed to save Danny. Fix things. The lab, the experiments, the lies, those were all in the past. Weren’t they? Sequel to Phantom of Truth.
What Little Girls Are Made Of by: HaiJu: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11592126/1/What-Little-Girls-Are-Made-Of Summary: Phantom and his younger double save Amity Park from a monstrous ghost, nearly destroying themselves in the process. The Fentons have always hunted ghosts; now it’s time to save one.
Green Jacket, Red Sleeves by: LunarMothim: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9117967/1/Green-Jacket-Red-Sleeves Summary: Two secrets: Danny’s mysterious injury and Phantom’s bizarre ectosignature. In her quest to find the answers to both, Maddie finds out more than she could ever have anticipated. Revelation fic, no PP
Running Blind by: Dejah Thoris of Mars: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3049214/1/Running-Blind Summary: Crossover with CSI. Something supernatural is killing people in Las Vegas… and it all seems to lead back to a fifteenyearold runaway named Danny Fenton.
A Different Sort of House Call by: Hornswaggler: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6481092/2/A-Different-Sort-of-House-Call Summary: House’s new case is a little tougher to diagnose, primarily because the patient should be, quite literally, already dead. A continuation of AnneriaWings’ Lab Rat
Everything Was White by: lexosaurus: https://archiveofourown.org/works/16467191/chapters/38565494 Summary: After being accidentally revealed to the public and taken away by the government, Danny deals with the aftermath of his time with the GiW.
You Should Be Dead by: SaphireDragon11: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9375525/1/You-Should-Be-Dead Summary: Dash and Kwan are horrified to discover they’ve accidentally killed their classmate, but perhaps even more so when he shows up at school the next day. With his secret on the line, Danny soon discovers Dash and Kwan are the least of his worries. A
Snapping Sound by: Represent: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11535920/1/A-Snapping-Sound Summary: COMPLETE — “You’re new Sam, so you don’t know. This will be the only warning you get. Don’t trust your eyes or you’ll be tricked. Nobody in Amity is who they seem. Nobody.” (personal note, another clasic of the phandom)
Dead Man’s Blood by anthrop: https://archiveofourown.org/works/991204 Summary: “Pfah! What good’re cops in a town like this?” The old man waves dismissively. “Nah, Phantom’ll take care of things, same as he always does.” Dean pauses in fishing out his wallet. “Phantom? Who’s Phantom?”
we are all walking each other home by anthrop: https://archiveofourown.org/works/16007549 Summary: Danny’s eyes flare. “What?” “Nothing,” Tucker says quickly, because he has a healthy sense of self-preservation and respect for the stupid amount of super strength and speed Danny’s got in ghost mode. “It’s just weird to see Phantom look so casual,” Sam drawls, because her favorite thing in the world is to push a guy’s buttons when he’s already down, apparently.
when the sun burns out by: anthrop: https://archiveofourown.org/works/5594869 Summary: “Storm?” Vlad scoffs. “This is no mere storm bearing down on us. He has opened a door, and He’s stepping through it now. He will reach down from beyond the stars to pluck you and I out of our weak meat with neither fuss nor flair. Don’t you see it, Daniel? We’re finally going to die.”
feel the outside turning in By: anthrop: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12292512/1/feel-the-outside-turning-in Summary: You remember falling out of the portal, and the dizzying twist in perception as you watched yourself fall. You watched the awful jitter of your body’s limbs, writhing like a dying insect, your white jumpsuit burnt black and smoking. You watched Sam and Tucker stagger away, the flashing lights carving terror deep into their faces. (personal note, It’s actually still Danny’s perspective but 2nd person is used)
Ghost speak; the Teacher By: @phantomrose96 http://phantomrose96.tumblr.com/post/45888938801/ghost-speak-the-teacher Summary: Danny slips into ghost speak and Lancer, Like the good teacher he is, tries to translate
From Ashes to Ashes by: @phantomrose96 http://phantomrose96.tumblr.com/post/74683295739/from-the-ashes Summary: Danny becomes less and less himself in the worst way possible From Ashes to
Ashes (Part 2) by: @phantomrose96 http://phantomrose96.tumblr.com/post/92381491182/from-the-ashes-part-2 Summary: It’s Part 2 I aint gonna spoil it
A Ghost Story By: Cordria: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11590571/1/A-Ghost-Story Summary: Maddie finds a strange toy airplane in a field, and it leads her to learning some very interesting things about her family. A spooky oneshot to celebrate the dead.
Masks By: Cordria https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3831182/1/Masks Summary: Sometimes, people hide who they truly are behind masks. This is a short story about the day that Lancer decides enough is enough when it comes to Daniel Fenton. Sequel is ‘Plunge’.
Plunge By: Cordria https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4759041/1/Plunge Summary: Sequel to ‘Masks’. Now that Lancer has learned the truth and has let Danny out of his office, Danny needs to face the next hurdle: his parents.
Pits By: Cordria https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3283823/1/Pits Summary: Danny has been captured and thrown into the Pits by Walker to fight for his life. Listen in as he tells his dark, twisted tale of surviving despite the odds. Warning: dark and depressing. Sequel is ‘Final Exam’.
Final Exam By: Cordria https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3240983/1/Final-Exam Summary:When Danny has to write a paper for Lancer detailing one of his most traumatic experiences, this is his creation. Caution: extremely depressing and dark. Sequel to ‘Pits’. (Personal note, this was in 1st perspective? I had no memories if that but when I came into the phantom and read this + Pits I sobbed my self to sleep. Cordia has a Tumblr too? Anyway her stuff is off the shits)

Anyway absolutely NONE of my links are working, so you miiight have to copy and paste and the layout might be wonky cuz it’s acting WEIRD But!!! I hope this helps! Happy reading, and thanks for dropping an ask!
(Edit) Fixed it!
The amount of serotonin it gave me to watch this grandma react to her new galaxy light 🥺
It’s dark in here- *gasps in excitement* OHH SARAH!
OHH SARAH! *giggles like a little kid* OHhHhH!!
My ceiling is filled with blue lights… and stars and everything!!
OH Sarah! I can go to bed at night looking at this. OHHHH it’s beautiful!
So I love these kinds of crossovers, and they vary just because of the different kind of series and canons that exist. And I have very basic knowledge regarding a lot of DC related topics and characters but we all know Batman and usually that’s enough. There’s good Justice League intervening and finding a small ghost child somehow keeping godly creatures of chaos in order with a mere glare, there’s teen titans and Danny interactions, there’s a lot of Danny’s friends and family dying and him getting adopted into these groups, basically you can find so much content.
One of my FAVOURITE concepts is the whole ‘Danny is Batman’s son’, which my favourite execution of it is The Phantom and the Knight by savya398 on Archive of our Own! Why is this my favourite? Why not a ‘Danny is Richard Graysons twin/lost brother? Because Dick is a nice dude, maybe getting serious from time to time but generally? He’s a good bro, makes me think of Jazz and Danny’s relationship.
Now Danny as Batman’s son? Well this has many implications. And my favourite is this makes DAMIEN Danny’s brother. Literal demon spawn finds out he has a brother and it’s DANNY. This child of pure chaos would not be impressed at all with this scrawny, c student mess. How dare this sorry excuse of a teen even be considered in being related to him! Or the great Batman!! The pure feral sibling bonds are to die for.
Even better is that this fic DOESN’T kill everyone off. Which I enjoy very greatly!! So yeah, if you like crossovers between Danny Phantom and Justice league where they don’t kill everyone Danny knows off, this is a good fic!! And while I’m at it, I’m gonna recommend some other really great Danny Phantom/DC fics!
The Meddling Jerkwad League by StrawberryCamel
A series that has the Justice League accidentally medaling while Danny and Tucker slowly finds less reasons not to strangle them all. It’s funny and entertaining!
Ghost Kings and Gotham Bats by BlueGhostCardinal
This is a good one. Phantom gets caught up in Gotham stuff, Danny gets mistaken as Damien, Bruce wants to adopt him naturally, everyone thinks he’s a clone or lost twin or something, and while we are at it, there’s a lot of established ghost lore!! King Danny heck yeah!! As well as the classic batfamily banter!
And so it Ghost by Evandarya
This one has Vlad as Danny’s guardian and Danny looks into getting into collage in Gotham! Of course it goes wrong and attracts the attention of the Batfam as they try to figure out what is going on with this kid that knew a little too much about the villain that attacked.
Operation I’m Totally 300 by I_Am_Toast
This one. Is hilarious I love this fic. It’s just Danny trying to convince the young justice league that he’s an old wise ghost based on the recorded appearances he has of himself in the past. We all know Danny just sucks at improv and so shenanigans are ensued.
Dressed for Death by Nohvarrs
Another great one, Danny ends up in John Constantine’s house and then he can’t seem to stop showing up wherever he goes. Danny’s problems only get more annoying when the Justice League tries to find out who he was before his death.
So yeah! Superheroes and Danny Phantom! I’m a big sucker for Danny Phantom crossovers. Especially since this child is ridiculously OP. He’s like an invasive species. He is a basic teen hero in Amity because he faces people and enemies that have very specialized weapons that can affect him. You drop him anywhere else? Almost nothing can touch him and he’s basically One Punch Man. Amazing.
this quiz sorts through characters from like dozens of fandoms and finds the one you’re most like. I’m not even a little bit surprised by my result
I just saw these news that this brazilian 15 years old boy made a fake profile pretending to be a 14 years old girl
And with this profile, he baited a creepy old dude
And so they agree to meet at a nearby park during the night.
And the old dude goes there, expecting to find some naive girl to be preyed upon
only to find the 15 years old boy
dressed as SPIDER-MAN
AND DRESSED AS SPIDER-MAN
THE BOY KICKED THE DUDE’S ASS. LIKE. LEGIT KICK HIS ASS
HE HAD BRASS KNUCKLES
Of course, the creep wasn’t happy with it, and called the police on the spiderman kid. And when the police found the kid, you know what he did?
He said “that guys a pedo lol” and gave them a drive with all the evidence he collected thru the profile
Thank you, Spider-man. Thank you for your service.

I still can’t believe that in the last 10 years Superman, Green Arrow, Flash and Supergirl all had live-action shows about them with 100-200 episodes, meanwhile Batman literally didn’t have his own show since the 60′s??
Like yeah he’s definitely overexposed on the big screen, but the fact fact that he (nor any of the Batkids) never had their own TV show is crazy to me.
“Am I too old for fanfiction?” I ask as I open a new 20 chapter Danny Phantom fic.
Why do so many shows from the late 90s and early 2000s have so many characters that fit the “bad boy with a motorcycle” niche and… why are they all named Johnny?
Do you know where you can watch Danny Phantom for free online? I was looking to write a fic and I want it to be accurate to the show but it’s been years since I watched it so my memory is kinda hasy
kimcartoon or watchcartoononline would be your best bet. i can't attest to the quality of either one, since i got the dvd set years ago.
so can we start hunting down white liberals now or what
I want to live by myself when I move out of my parent's place but I'm really afraid of money problems? I'm afraid that the only place I can afford will be in the ghetto and it'll all be torn apart and I'll only be allowed to eat one granola bar a week. I'm really stressing out about this. I don't know anything about after school life. I don't know anything about paying bills or how to buy an apartment and it's really scaring me. is there anything you know that can help me?

Once you’ve looked over all those cool links, I have some general advice for you on how you can have some sort of support system going for you:
You may decide to leave home for many different reasons, including:
wishing to live independently
location difficulties – for example, the need to move closer to university
conflict with your parents
being asked to leave by your parents.
It’s common to be a little unsure when you make a decision like leaving home. You may choose to move, but find that you face problems you didn’t anticipate, such as:
Unreadiness – you may find you are not quite ready to handle all the responsibilities.
Money worries – bills including rent, utilities like gas and electricity and the cost of groceries may catch you by surprise, especially if you are used to your parents providing for everything. Debt may become an issue.
Flatmate problems – issues such as paying bills on time, sharing housework equally, friends who never pay board, but stay anyway, and lifestyle incompatibilities (such as a non-drug-user flatting with a drug user) may result in hostilities and arguments.
Think about how your parents may be feeling and talk with them if they are worried about you. Most parents want their children to be happy and independent, but they might be concerned about a lot of different things. For example:
They may worry that you are not ready.
They may be sad because they will miss you.
They may think you shouldn’t leave home until you are married or have bought a house.
They may be concerned about the people you have chosen to live with.
Reassure your parents that you will keep in touch and visit regularly. Try to leave on a positive note. Hopefully, they are happy about your plans and support your decision.
Tips include:
Don’t make a rash decision – consider the situation carefully. Are you ready to live independently? Do you make enough money to support yourself? Are you moving out for the right reasons?
Draw up a realistic budget – don’t forget to include ‘hidden’ expenses such as the property’s security deposit or bond (usually four weeks’ rent), connection fees for utilities, and home and contents insurance.
Communicate – avoid misunderstandings, hostilities and arguments by talking openly and respectfully about your concerns with flatmates and parents. Make sure you’re open to their point of view too – getting along is a two-way street.
Keep in touch – talk to your parents about regular home visits: for example, having Sunday night dinner together every week.
Work out acceptable behaviour – if your parents don’t like your flatmate(s), find out why. It is usually the behaviour rather than the person that causes offence (for example, swearing or smoking). Out of respect for your parents, ask your flatmate(s) to be on their best behaviour when your parents visit and do the same for them.
Ask for help – if things are becoming difficult, don’t be too proud to ask your parents for help. They have a lot of life experience.
Not everyone who leaves home can return home or ask their parents for help in times of trouble. If you have been thrown out of home or left home to escape abuse or conflict, you may be too young or unprepared to cope.
If you are a fostered child, you will have to leave the state-care system when you turn 18, but you may not be ready to make the sudden transition to independence.
If you need support, help is available from a range of community and government organisations. Assistance includes emergency accommodation and food vouchers. If you can’t call your parents or foster parents, call one of the associations below for information, advice and assistance.

Try to solve any problems before you leave home. Don’t leave because of a fight or other family difficulty if you can possibly avoid it.

Remember that you can get help from a range of community and government organizations.

Look, I know a good number of you are from the US and things aren't amazing there either, but my country is literally on the brink of collapse. So I'd love it if we could talk about that for a minute.
If you can't do anything else, please just read and reblog.
A second COVID wave has taken out the healthcare system. There are no more hospital beds. There's an oxygen shortage. There's a critical vaccine shortage. The Central Government has thrown its hands up and is passing the baton to the State Governments to do what they can.
There are over 16 million covid cases. A record 330,000 new cases reported yesterday - comparable to the US at its peak. 187,000 dead as of today.
There is no plan.
Mass cremations are taking place. The cremation grounds are running day and night and they are short on wood. People are watching their loved ones die while waiting for a hospital bed, and then they're unable to give them the proper burial rights.
Hospitals are overwhelmed. Patients are being confined, two to a bed. They're the lucky ones.
We are on the verge of people dying in the streets.
This is the second-most populous country in the world. The largest democracy. A country that encapsulates over 15,000 years of recorded human history and has endured everything from famine to invasion to colonisation.
We might be at the end. This might be the thing that does us in.
People are dying.
People are dying.
People are dying and there is no plan.
More good news? Variants are popping up. A double mutation strain has shown up. It is resistant to current vaccines. This will not go away. This is the devastation they warned of when the anti-maskers were out protesting the minor inconvenience of covering their face in public.
My country is on the verge of an emergency state. Our government has failed us. This is as dire a situation as it ever could be.
Look. I don't do much with my life. I write fics, some of you have read them and that's pretty much it. I spend my days with my head in the clouds because that's where I like to be.
But two days ago, my grandmother tested positive, had to be taken to hospital and the ambulance caught fire.
She barely made it to the urgent care she needs.
So, here I am, using whatever meager platform I have to cobble this request together. Because I have to do something.
If you can, donate.
Or spread the word.
Help. Please.
Can you send the link of the new episode? Lies? Please?
the ep with english subs my beloved
Everyone should know the international sign for Help Me. Let’s make this famous!!
I’m not trying to be inflammatory, I’m just curious. How do het ace/aro people face SYSTEMATIC oppression? Gay/bi/trans people face oppression like difficultly adopting children, finding housing, they may be fired from employment because of their gender or orientation. So they are bared from normal parts of live because of their gender/sexuality. Gay ace/aro people face this too, but what do het ace/aro people experience on a societal level?
If you’d been following my blog at all or even bothered to peruse it a little before dropping this message in my inbox, you’d probably already know the answer to your question.
You’d ALSO probably know that there are bi and pan aspecs too (e.g., I’m panromantic demisexual) which isn’t “gay” (does this term also include lesbians?) so I feel like your ask erases part of my own identity and that of others in the community.
For these reasons and more, I’d bet money that you’re not here because you’re “curious”. You’re probably here because you figure this is how you’re gonna stop a “self-imposing” aspec from speaking up for herself.
Well guess what: That’s just hateful & sad.
Regardless though of your intentions, I’m here to say that there is in fact SYSTEMATIC oppression against aspecs. For example, Dr Gordon Hodson wrote this about his 2012 study:
In a recent investigation (MacInnis & Hodson, in press) we uncovered strikingly strong bias against asexuals in both university and community samples. Relative to heterosexuals, and even relative to homosexuals and bisexuals, heterosexuals: (a) expressed more negative attitudes toward asexuals (i.e., prejudice); (b) desired less contact with asexuals; and © were less willing to rent an apartment to (or hire) an asexual applicant (i.e., discrimination). Moreover, of all the sexual minority groups studied, asexuals were the most dehumanized (i.e., represented as “less human”). Intriguingly, heterosexuals dehumanized asexuals in two ways. Given their lack of sexual interest, widely considered a universal interest, it might not surprise you to learn that asexuals were characterized as “machine-like” (i.e., mechanistically dehumanized). But, oddly enough, asexuals were also seen as “animal-like” (i.e., animalistically dehumanized). Yes, asexuals were seen as relatively cold and emotionless and unrestrained, impulsive, and less sophisticated.
When you repeatedly observe such findings it grabs your attention as a prejudice researcher. But let’s go back a minute and consider those discrimination effects. Really? You’d not rent an apartment to an asexual man, or hire an asexual woman? Even if you relied on stereotypes alone, presumably such people would make ideal tenants and employees. We pondered whether this bias actually represents bias against single people, a recently uncovered and very real bias in its own right (see Psychology Today column by Bella DePaulo). But our statistical analyses ruled out this this possibility. So what’s going on here?
If you’ve been following my column, you’ll recall that I wrote a recent article on what I called the “Bigotry Bigot-Tree” – what psychologists refer to as generalized prejudice. Specifically, those disliking one social group (e.g., women) also tend to dislike other social groups (e.g., homosexuals; Asians). In our recent paper (MacInnis & Hodson, in press), we found that those who disliked homosexuals also disliked bisexuals and asexuals. In other words, these prejudices are correlated. Heterosexuals who dislike one sexual minority, therefore, also dislike other sexual minorities, even though some of these groups are characterized by their sexual interest and activity and others by their lack of sexual interest and activity.
This anti-asexual bias, at its core, seems to boil down to what Herek (2010) refers to as the “differences as deficit” model of sexual orientation. By deviating from the typical, average, or normal sexual interests, sexual minorities are considered substandard and thus easy targets for disdain and prejudice. Contrary to conventional folk wisdom, prejudice against sexual minorities may not therefore have much to do with sexual activity at all. There is even evidence, for instance, that religious fundamentalists are prejudiced against homosexuals even when they are celibate (Fulton et al., 1999). Together, such findings point to a bias against “others”, especially different others, who are seen as substandard and deficient (and literally “less human”). “Group X” is targeted for its lack of sexual interest even more than homosexuals and bisexuals are targeted for their same-sex interests.
From news coverage of a recently published study (2016):
What should the average person take away from your study?
Since I first became interested in the issue, I have come to conclude that U.S. society is both “sex negative” and “sex positive.” In other words, there is stigma and marginalization that can come both from being “too sexual” and from being “not sexual enough.” In a theoretical paper, I argued that sexuality may be compulsory in contemporary U.S. society. In other words, our society assumes that (almost) everyone is, at their core, “sexual” and there exists a great deal of social pressure to experience sexual desire, engage in sexual activities, and adopt a sexual identity. At the same time, various types of “non-sexuality” (such as a lack of sexual desire or activity) are stigmatized.
For this particular study, I identified thirty individuals who identified as asexual and asked them first, if they had experienced stigma or marginalization as a result of their asexuality, and, second how they challenged this stigma or marginalization. I found that my interviewees had experienced the following forms of marginalization: pathologization (i.e. people calling them sick), social isolation, unwanted sex and relationship conflict, and the denial of epistemic authority (i.e. people not believing that they didn’t experience sexual attraction). I also found that my interviews resisted stigma and marginalization in five ways: describing asexuality as simply a different (but not inherently worse) form of sexuality; deemphasizing the importance of sexuality in human life; developing new types of nonsexual relationships; coming to see asexuality as a sexual orientation or identity; and engaging in community building and outreach.
I hope that average people would take away from this study the idea that some people can lead fulfilling lives without experiencing sexual attraction but can experience distress if others try to invalidate their identities.
Some of the social isolation we aspecs experience comes from religious communities. Indeed, the popular myth that religious people revere aspecs is very much NOT TRUE. For example, read “Myth 8″ from the VISION Catholic Religious Vocation Guide:
MYTH 8: Religious are asexual
Question: What do you call a person who is asexual?
Answer: Not a person. Asexual people do not exist. Sexuality is a gift from God and thus a fundamental part of our human identity. Those who repress their sexuality are not living as God created them to be: fully alive and well. As such, they’re most likely unhappy. All people are called by God to live chastely, meaning being respectful of the gift of their sexuality. Religious men and women vow celibate chastity, which means they live out their sexuality without engaging in sexual behavior. A vow of chastity does not mean one represses his manhood or her womanhood. Sexuality and the act of sex are two very different things. While people in religious life abstain from the act of sex, they do not become asexual beings, but rather need to be in touch with what it means to be a man or a woman. A vow of chastity also does not mean one will not have close, loving relationships with women and men. In fact, such relationships are a sign of living the vow in a healthy way. Living a religious vow of chastity is not always easy, but it can be a very beautiful expression of love for God and others. Religious women and men aren’t oddities; they mirror the rest of the church they serve: there are introverts and extroverts, tall and short, old and young, straight and gay, obese and skinny, crass and pious, humorous and serious, and everything in between. They attempt to live the same primary vocation as all other Christians do: proclaiming and living the gospel. However, religious do this as members of an order that serve the church and world in a particular way. Like marriage and the single life, religious life can be wonderful, fulfilling, exciting, and, yes, normal. Yet, it also can be countercultural and positively challenging. It’s that for us and many others. If you thought religious life was outdated, dysfunctional, or dead, we hope you can now look beyond the stereotypes and see the gift it is to the church and world.
NOTE: YOU CAN BE A GAY CATHOLIC PERSON BUT NOT ASEXUAL, BC ASEXUALITY DOESN’T EXIST (yet somehow we’re also “most likely unhappy” and “oddities”). I sincerely hope and believe that not all religions characterize us aspecs this way. But here are some personal accounts I found on a reddit site answering the question “Do any religions have a negative stance toward asexuals?”:
Please note that the Christian pastor in the last example was fearful (or something?) that an asexual was helping to lead a youth group and kicked them out of the church as a result.
While my own comic project “The Mistake” is on hiatus (you could read the prologue on Tumblr here and on A3O here) I will make a “long comics” rec post because maybe you saw it I love comics 💚 and I believe artists with so much passion need exposure and cheering
By @alieaself|phantomtype, Doppelgänger (completed), do I really need to present this masterpiece ? Incredible Dan & futur!Vlad’s story and development, incredible art style with big vision and quality. Big art influence for me.
By @krossan, Legendary Destination (on going), do I really need to present this too ? Sequel of Phantom Planet, new story, new lore, new characters, old characters… Krossan is a pillar in the fandom. Each of their piece of art reek talent, hard work and passion, this comic it not an exception.
By @ghost-chicky-blog|@kennymayovo, Ectober Comic (on going) (TW: blood and gore), spooky story, it develops my feral!Vlad hc. One of my first meeting with the creativity of the fandom and one artist that greatly influenced my art style. I will always deeply respect chicky who did so much for the Phandom and is an amazing artist.
By @promsien, Monsters Born (completed) (TW: blood), a Danny&Vlad bonding and action comic. Though they didn’t draw Danny Phantom anymore, I just can’t forget this one. Promsien is an incredible artist whose influence greatly shape the Phandom today. Another big art influence for me.
By @ep-10, Amity Thereafter (ongoing), I already reblogged a lot of ep-10′s posts so it’s not a secret that I love this comic :D Sequel of Phantom Planet and give a satisfactory continuity to a weak canon ending, but shonen style!! The panelling is very good and seriously gave me physical goosebumps several time, not even joking.
By @rekkaroonii, DPAUcomic (on going), sequel of Phantom Planet, older!Danny is dealing with the mental horrors of not feeling as human anymore. Please admire the work of somebody who knows exactly what they’re doing and how to tame a comic page like it’s nothing.
By @catesartworks, Phantom in the Mirror (on going), first timeline of “The Ultimate Enemy”. The style and texture is magical, and catsartworks is a magician who just- just- mastered the art of paneling and art symbolism. I haven’t other words to describe it, a pure black diamond in the desert.
By joe-the-hoe, Archetype (completed) (TW: body horror and gore), AU I can’t really explain without spoils, just read it. A bit weak for the art in the beginning, but with the pages we see how much the artist improve over the years and it’s beautiful. The comic, THIS comic, is what shaped my liking for horror genre and awake my love for those kind of dp fics. I’m not kidding, this one is my favorite, my GOAL in term of art style, story, panelling and comic quality, and my fav piece of fandom’s work (with Darker Yet Darker by Sansybones).
By Kuro the Artist, 5 Year Later (on going), 5 years after Phantom Planet, crossover between Ben 10 and Danny Phantom. I don’t very like crossovers, but this deserves a big look. Kuro is another amazing artist and a very kind heart, give it a try if you want to see the clash between 2 different universe from 2 different cartoon channels.

was this an excuse to shoutout my favorite writers? yes
When this week started, I was full of hope and applying for jobs so I can start over after graduation.
Now it’s Thursday, and I’m finishing the one bottle of wine I own while I cry as I finish a 69 chapter fanfiction I’ve been reading because it’s OVER and WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH MY LIFE NOW?
You ever stand there and watch everything fall apart and just think “ah yes, time to return to my roots” and restart an obsession from 10 years ago or are you normal
So my best friend and I started joking about how crazy our old private school was and the more we talked the more we realized it was actually really messed up and horrifying. So here’s some things that happened to me from 4th to 12th grade in my American private school!
- The entire school was taken out of class for an entire afternoon to silently hold hands in a field as a “fundraiser” for the school gym. The principal went around with a bottle of water for kids to drink out of via waterfall so we wouldn’t pass out in the 85+ degree heat.
- We spent an entire semester watching nothing but kidnapping videos for our “life science” class. Given this was during the Kony 2012 instance but we’d watch videos not only about him raising his child army, but also security footage of different children getting kidnapped or almost getting kidnapped so we’d know we weren’t safe anywhere. We weren’t taught how to avoid it, just that it was very possible. We weren’t in high school yet is all ill say.
- A teacher was hired who had no education or training as a teacher, was doing drugs on campus, and would spend entire class periods cursing out children and telling them they would never amount to anything.
- We watched videos of people being possessed by demons, terrorized by demons, and so on. In two separate years.
- We were never taught what mental health was. At all. There was only demon possession.
- We had to do a project on abortion which included looking up and printing out pictures of the different steps then presenting it to the class to prove why abortion was wrong.
- We were told to never have sex or else we’d get STDs. We were never told what sex or STDs were, much less how to prevent STDs or have safe sex. The word sex was used maybe once and only with “never have” in front of it.
- Girls (yes only girls) were told they’d be viewed as “second hand goods” if they kissed a boy before marriage and no one would want them. This was in our Life Management textbook.
- Boys were told to walk on or next to the road on a date so they’d be hit with a car and die instead of the girl. It was not a “just in case” thing. It was a “you will sacrifice yourself at 12 years old” thing.
- We watched a slow motion, graphic video of two teenage girls getting into a horrific car accident because they were texting and driving. It was acted out but left nothing to the imagination. They died in the video and we saw it all.
- For prom, if you brought someone from outside the school, your date had to be interviewed by the principal and the dean, fill out paperwork and sign in, and then you and your date had to get a lecture from the dean about how we were expected to act at prom.
- We were told to never date anyone who wasn’t of the same religion as us. If we did, we would marry them, have kids, get into fights, divorse, lose everything to the ex-spouse, and end up living under a bridge starving to death with your children for the rest of your life. This was a legit example used in the Life Management textbook.
- We were not told what abuse was or the different forms it took.
- Teachers would “kidnap” an entire class in between periods to prank another teacher. Sometimes an entire class would go missing for a whole hour because of this.
- We skipped over the entire chapter on breast cancer in our health class because it had the word breast in it. We never learned how to check for breast cancer ourselves to make sure we were healthy. It was an all girls class.
- The Life Management book had a story in it about a man and a woman. The “homely” man was in love with the woman and asked her to marry him (they were not in a relationship). She said no. He kept asking her for YEARS and she kept saying no but he wouldn’t give up. Eventually, she looked over at him in church one day and realized wow looks don’t matter at all he’s a good religious man. She agreed to marry him the next time he asked. So I guess if she says no you just keep asking! You’ll wear her down eventually!
- We never learned what rape was.
- We never learned what sex was or how to have it safely.
- We never learned what mental health was and how to get help.
- We never learned what abuse was and how to have a healthy relationship besides the above mentioned “never take no,” “you’re broken if you aren’t pure,” and “sacrifice yourself by throwing yourself in front of a bus.”
- We were taught in Life Management that men needed to ask out the woman. If she did it, the relationship would forever be unbalanced and he’d feel inferior and would never respect her.
- Rock music is a sin so don’t listen to it
- Women who go too far are second hand goods and will die alone because no one wants them.
- Don’t kiss before marriage because that’ll make it more special.
- We did a whole project on why evolution is wrong. And were never told what evolution was beforehand.
I’m sure there’s more but that’s just off the top of our heads! Can honestly say it was the most toxic environment I’ve ever been in and I’m horrified looking back on it.
