Grief is an interesting subject for depiction, because it isn't ever really just one feeling. It's a cluster of feelings, an array of very different, sometimes almost contradictory emotional states, which collectively we understand as expressions of that one underlying condition, which is grieving.
So how do you show that? How do you take that and make it visible to an audience? Many, many artists have tried, and their attempts are varied, fascinating, and very occasionally heartbreaking.
Let's take a little non-comprehensive walking tour of grief in art history, from the 1400s to the 2020s, from the religious to the cartoony, and get in our feelings a bit.

Al coming back from his travels: Xing was great! I've learned so much about alkahestry, and I think we're really making progress and getting Jerso and Zampano's bodies back! It was really nice to see Mei, and Ling is doing a great job as emperor, and I even got to visit some of Xing's neighbors to the east! I feel like I'm learning more about alchemy and alkahestry every day

- “Thank you, I guess .. I’ll finally be able to sleep at night”
Reigen: It’s already dark, guess I lost track of time. —Sigh—- Another day passes…
Mob: Master Reigen: Those were such good times…. Mob: Master Reigen: Time passes so quickly. He’s an adult now, out living his own life…. Mob: Master…. Master…. Reigen: I miss him. I can still hear how he used to call me. Ugh I’m hopeless.
MASTER!
Mob: It’s been a while, Master Reigen Reigen: …………. Mob?
Reigen: You…..Why are you here? What are you doing here?
Mob: I was thinking back to old times, and I wondered if you’d miss me at all, so I decided to drop by.
Reigen: Idiot! Of course I do! Mob: I was only kidding Mob: Master, I was wondering if you wanted to go get some drinks, since I’m in town. I’m twenty now.
Reigen: Well… um, I’m not really much of a drinker. (Thinks: Can we pick something else?) Mob: But I’d like to get drinks with you. Reigen: Uh….Well, we both know I can’t say no to you. Mob: Just one drink
Mob thinks: ah… he’s only had a few sips
Reigen: You’ve really grown up.
Mob: You’ve gotten older too, Master.
Reigen: Ugh, don’t remind me
Reigen: So you’re in college now yeah? You doing okay?
Mob: Yeah
Reigen: You ever encounter supernatural stuff anymore?
Mob: Occasionally But every time I do, I think of the things you taught me and the things we’ve been through together. And it’s through these experiences that I’m able to live a normal life. Reigen: Haha you’re giving me waayy to much credit.
Mob: No it’s true, meeting you was the best thing that happened to me.
Mob: Uh…. are you crying? Reigen: Of course not
Reigen downs his drink in one go and falls forward onto the table Mob thinks: Has he had too much?
Reigen slurring: Moooobbb Mob thinks: Is he okay?…He’s really falling apart. Reigen: Awww look at your chubby cheeks, just like when you were little. Mob: Ugh not this side of him
Reigen pets his hair for a bit. Reigen: But… real talk. I’m really happy to be able to see you again.
Reigen: Mob…. you’ve grown up into a really good person. Mob: Of course I did…. I’m YOUR student after all. By Gamtga on twitter

Idea: Takenaka is using his powers in this scene. He notices Reigen staring at him, and decides to listen to Reigen’s thoughts to see what’s up. But what Takenaka realizes in that process is that the man is also reading him like an open book – this telepath can hear Reigen breaking down every miniscule aspect of his current presentation, and the conclusions he’s drawing are so uncannily accurate that he might as well be a telepath himself. Being read like this is a new experience for Takenaka since he’s always been on the other side up to now, and this is honestly really unnerving for him.
This is not a fully formed thought but. Considering the ways in which one of the big tensions of Mob Psycho is "Do you see other people as people or do you see them as tools?" and how in World Domination it's revealed that despite building this huge organization Toichiro views everyone around him as literal power sources (and how the ground troops think he's doing everything for them and the Scars think 'Well *those* people are useless but he's doing it for *us*' and Shimazaki tells the Scars 'Well *you're* useless but the Super Five are *actually* important' and then manga Toichiro says that he only keeps the Super Five around as spare batteries), and conversely how in Divine Tree Dimple realizes that even though he's been using all these people as power sources it's not accomplishing what he wants because he's actually desperate for someone to see him as a person. And considering how Psycho Helmet is the purest and most terrifying incarnation of "people are only worth what power I can extract from them" because it was created from those predatory impulses and nothing else.
