If you haven’t read the book yet, do not proceed. This post may be subject to criticism, but these are just my views.

ISN’T SHE BEAUTIFUL I LOVE HER 

Ariadne Bridgestock, or rather, Kamala Joshi, is one of the only Indian characters written about in TSC. We get to know that Kamala was adopted by the Inquisitor, Maurice Bridgestock, and his wife, when she was only seven as she’d been orphaned and the other family in the Mumbai(Bombay) Institute wouldn’t take her in due to bad blood between their families. 

She had the potential to be a powerful Shadowhunter, with beauty as well as a kindhearted, gentle nature. Her adoptive parents loved her enough to nurture her talents and show her off, but they changed her name. They changed her name and refused to acknowledge her Indian heritage. In that case, they would never dream of accepting Kamala as a lesbian woman.

This was at a time when India was a colony of the British. Britishers had taken over the country from 1757, and had no love for the Indians. Indians were tortured and revolted for years, until finally India gained independence in 1947. Imagine being a young girl in British India, adopted by British shadowhunters with a powerful position in the Clave, but having your entire childhood wiped out just because of your nationality. Imagine being a closeted lesbian in the 19th-20th centuries, and adding the fear of being rejected by society to all the above. Kamala does not deserve a partner who does not understand why she cannot reveal her sexuality to her parents. Kamala does not deserve to have her childhood hidden, does not deserve to be afraid of society anymore. 

Being a bisexual Indian myself, I have always admired her. If in Chain of Thorns, we do not see her speaking Hindi (for she must have learnt it in her childhood), wearing a saree or a salwar and telling her friends (I like to imagine her with Alastair, Eugenia and Grace in a friends group) about the things she remembers from India, I will take it personally. We see the Carstairs siblings embrace their Persian heritage proudly (even after Alastair suffered years of racism and bullying for it) and converse in Farsi – we MUST see Kamala embrace her Indian heritage as well. Cassandra must give Kamala the appreciation and respect which she deserves. Thank you for listening to my rant.

Or just go grow illegal plants so anyone who found it is charged with crime and the lawyer can dismiss their verdict as untrustworthy.

While the UK does have resources to study better it's because they took way our chance to build our own. They agree with the French government to give back colonised stolen items yet don't do the same. It sucks. But there is hope. We have to have some. They'll learn. Some already have. Look at Cambridge's India Studies under IGCSE.

God, this is like the main reason I never want to study in London/the UK. I’m sick of them. I’m sick of movies pretending Indian immigrants don’t know how to use fucking elevator buttons (Million Dollar Arm and so many others). I’m sick of my mom being numb when she tells me how India was blessed with incredible natural resources, only for the British to come and steal it all away from us. I’m sick of listening to people talk about/quoting Ghandi with no fucking idea what they’re saying, and pronouncing it like “Gandy.” Wtf is Gandy. Get away from me. I’m sick of white people seeing pictures of modern India’s city, including Mumbai (where my parents emigrated from) and looking at us/it like we’re kicked puppies, like “oh, they’re so poor, and it’s so dirty, and wow, we should donate and give you hugs, you poor thing.” Like NO. Fuck you. You did this to us! You created the fucking caste system! You’ve thrown us into poverty with no remorse.

Even to this day, Indian culture is blended with British culture. And sometimes it’s all in good fun, like how my parents eat those digestive cookies (sounds gross, but are actually really good), except we call them Marie Biscuit, but sometimes it’s not. It’s really fucking not. It’s heartbreaking and exhausting and upsetting. I’m sick of people mispronouncing our names, disrespecting us, making fun of curry or bonus, calling us curry, making jokes about arranged marriages, doing the fucking Indian accent like a racist, asking us how to speak “Indian” or asking if we’re “Hindi.” I’m sick of people calling it chai tea. CHAI MEANS TEA. I’m sick of people making studying Asian jokes. I’m sick of people making fun of meditation and chakras and third eyes like idiots. You can’t have your seven chakras aligned, you dolt. You’re not an all-knowing being.

You’re an ignorant prick and asshole who appropriates our culture and thinks it’s funny. You only like our music and our clothes and our culture when it benefits you. You only “care” when it helps YOU.

And if you think I’m being “harsh,” you’ll find sympathy somewhere after shit in the dictionary. I don’t want you here.

Anyway, sarees are a cultural garment of South Asia and have nothing to do with religion. If you aren't Desi then don't wear them unless you're among us. As in actually in South Asia, or visiting or living among a South Asian diaspora community, at a Desi cultural event or religious space, or any instance where a Desi person invites you to wear them. Those cases are simply cultural assimilation, which is a mark of respect, so you're very welcome. Some Desi people might be uncomfortable with it if you're wearing it as a cultural showcase, like a Bollywood dance on stage, and they're allowed to be. It goes without saying that this also applies to lehenga and shalwar kameez, although those are widespread in Middle Eastern culture as well, so those dress rules can be extended to those spaces in the same way.

Cultural appropriation is primarily an immigrant and diaspora minority issue. Not that it doesn't impact the people living in our native countries, but its effects are felt first and foremost by the ones who actually have to integrate into white society.

Do buy sarees from South Asian designers and sellers, if you have appropriate events where other people will also be wearing them. That's cultural patronage. Make your own dresses out of the saree cloth. That's cultural exchange.

And if you're confused about what a white person is, it's a white-skinned person of European origin. Not whether someone is pale or tan. Hope that helps. 🌸🌸🌸🤗

I love evelynn but if she can take any form why not make her brown? Most witches are described as either deathly pale or of the darkness and earth. If you made her brown like Karma to show how deeply connected to the shadows she looks and this would lower the contrast between her and her shade form while making the transition easier on the eyes. Is there a way to mess with the settings so a character's skin looks brown like with the contrast or brightness levels or something?
