Hubble Floats Free - March 6th, 1997.
"Why put observatories in space? Most telescopes are on the ground. On the ground, you can deploy a heavier telescope and upgrade it more easily. The trouble is that Earth-bound telescopes must look through the Earth's atmosphere. First, the Earth's atmosphere blocks out a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum, allowing a narrow band of visible light to reach the surface. Telescopes which explore the Universe using light beyond the visible spectrum, such as those onboard the Compton Observatory (gamma rays), the ASCA satellite (x-rays), or the ultraviolet and infrared instruments on the above-pictured Hubble Space Telescope (HST), need to be carried above the absorbing atmosphere. Second, the Earth's atmosphere blurs the light it lets through. The blurring is caused by varying density and continual motion of air. By orbiting above the Earth's atmosphere, the Hubble can get clearer images. In fact, even though HST has a mirror 15 times smaller than large Earth-bound telescopes, it can still resolve detail almost 100 times finer."
Honestly, as a man, if you see a guy who thinks men have it so much harder they are not worth the time. Like, it is impossible to ignore the disproportional suffering of women in DV, the underrepresentation of women in positions of power everywhere, the stories of assault that most women of all ages have faced. It’s like “oh you are finding it hard to get a date?” but women have to deal with if the person on the date is going to threaten their safety.
Exactly! Like it’s okay to talk about some things men face, but doing it as a retort to women’s issues is so so tacky to me. I also think it’s become somewhat of a punchline between guys — like the “bc of woke!!” “bc of feminism!!!” w laughter soundtrack energy wafting off of men like this is so palpable it’s concerning… this is not the counterculture slay you think it is
I find it so ironic when men make statements like ‘we fought the wars’, ‘we gave you rights’, ‘we invented the phone you’re using’ etc like.. so when it’s something you want to take credit for it’s fine to generalise men as a whole group but as soon as someone brings up rape, murder, assault etc and how men commit majority of those crimes it’s suddenly ‘not all men’ ? Right okay so now you’re individuals and can’t take credit for the entirety of your demographic?
"We need more complex female characters" you guys can't even handle Chappell Roan, Real Life Woman with Boundaries
So a lot has gone on in the last little bit. NASA recently was ordered to scrub their site of women's contributions to astronomy and astrophysics, even took down their page celebrating women's history month and all the contributions they've made to NASA. So I did a thing and crawled through the wayback machine to find some articles, and decided to put this right here because fuck the government, fuck the orange in charge who told them to scrub their site, and fuck NASA for throwing their people under the bus and bowing to this authoritarian nonsense. This version of the site still has articles on some important figures like Eileen Collins, the first woman to command a space shuttle, and ISS chief scientist Jennifer Buchli and chief deputy scientist Meghan Everett, who, in their words, "-provide the science strategy and make science recommendations for the International Space Station program, and help make sure all of the science on the International Space Station goes smoothly, from preparing for launch to conducting research on the space station with the scientists and astronauts and returning the science to Earth."

Back in class 7 i had this very close friend and we used to banter with each other a lot , she used to roast me i too returned the favour. Now this friend of mine used to apply a lot of oil in her hair and come to school everyday, i remember it was geography class and we were learning about oil spills and she was sitting right beside me so I looked her dead in the eye and said "man if you dip your hair in the ocean it will cause a big oil spill, massive devastation RIP marine life" lmao I think this was one of the best creative roast i cooked up in the moment even she was cackling after that.
