Writing all of this made me think that I completely understand why some folks REALLY REALLY HATE ORIKO, which-- fair. I think that it can be kind of off-putting to watch a person do horrible things while they want to be seen as good, and I think that even more-- a self righteous person who does so much harm and has hypocritical views and then actually succeeds at the end (even with her life) can definitely be annoying.

But I also kind of like this about Oriko. I don't really want her to be different-- I think it would make her far less interesting.

Like, I think it's absolutely hilarious that all she wanted for "her world" was... a person who is absolutely obsessed with her and would kill and also die for her. Like... alright girl. That's a lot to ask for imo but you do you.

But I think it's more realistic for someone who is supposed to be manipulative to have some really dark traits. I think also that it makes a lot of sense for a manipulative person to worry a LOT about how she is perceived, and if she is a good person underneath it all. So much of her outward-facing identity is a tool she uses that changes depending on who she talks to, so wanting to be loved completely no matter what she does or how she acts makes sense.

I think it's also really important to note that Oriko is a politician's daughter whose father had a massive fall from grace. Oriko knows how fake people can be, and so being manipulative isn't a bad thing-- to her, it's what everyone else is already doing. The same people at her school that liked her before her father's crimes were put to light now hate her, and Oriko never had anything to do with that. Oriko herself didn't change. But if you view people like tools, such as the folks around her in that environment, it makes sense to dispose of a tool that could hurt you, aka network with someone important and then publicly break it off so that your own reputation doesn't get harmed.

I dunno, I'm rambling at this point. I think that Oriko has a lot of traits that can make a person sit back and go "wow uh you are not a good person like whatsoever" but then again, I think they are understandable and make her more interesting than just being the evil light magical girl. I think there is a darkness and callousness in her that is off-putting but realistic. The way she will use and dispose of people but also be haunted over it, and then be haunted over what it means for her, is just... I think that she's very human in a lot of bad ways, and I like that for her.

At the end of the day, Oriko wants to be important and I feel like that's something most people can relate to. What she does to get there is awful, and just as obsessive as Kirika in some ways-- but unlike Kirika, she questions herself every step of the way.

I dunno! I'm gonna stop rambling here.

I like when people like a character so way too much that it transcends even self shipping or kinning and becomes more of a patron saint that you pray to type of deal

Wait fuck Madoka is basically magical girl death

Like, a concept of death for magical girls itself, I didn't realize that before, but damn actually, it was always more of salvation for me? A savior? But she is just, death, the one who brings them over to the other side, the one to take their hand and gently lead them to the eternal rest, a comforting guide, but at the end of the day she's still leading you to your end

She isn't the reaper of souls, but a gentle guide who waits for you at the end of your path, who smiles at you and whispers you promises of calmness, of being free of suffering, free from being used, fredom from the life of fighting

Homura on the other hand can be called life, with witches always creating it, familiars are living beings, those that don't conform to the rules of reality, but they're still living beings and Homura, the peak of witches, the devil herself?

She's life itself, the hard fight, the one you go on and on for, go through tribulations, challenges and trials that she throws at you, but she's still gentle, still caring despite her harshness

She has her favorites, but she cares for all, doesn't she?

She will force you to fight, to survive, her entire goal at the start was to make sure people she was close to LIVED

And now as the devil, she's the cruelty of being alive, opposed to death, opposed to the pain it brings to others, opposed to the world that doesn't have the people she cares for

She created life in her familiars, Clara dolls being the absolute end of it all, beings that can mimics humans to the degree that isn't imaginable

These girls make me go slightly insane, the curse of coming to a fandom years down the line and realizing shit that probably had already been talked about

Imagine you were a wizard who absolutely adored doing magic. You love it, it gives you joy and connection with people, and it becomes your job. Maybe you even went to wizard school. People pay you to do spells for them, sometimes big, sometimes small. People tell you how much your magic means for them, how an enchantment you did was a birthday present for a friend, or how they have something you made displayed on their wall.

And over time, people make more and more enchantments that make your spell work easier - you can make them faster or to a better quality, and it lets you do even more of your magic for more people

Now imagine one day someone who wasn’t a wizard said that they had created an enchantment that made spells for people. You didnt need to go to a wizard anymore, it was completely free, and all it did was absorb a little bit of magic from thousands of wizards spells that were already out in the world. It took no effort, no hard work, and did it really matter? A spell is a spell after all, who cares if it was made by a wizard or through this enchantment.

That would suck, wouldn’t it? That would feel bad? You’re a wizard and now someone who isn’t a wizard is telling you you’re redundant because there’s a magic that mimics wizards, and really if you complain about it you just sound whiny, and maybe your magic wasn’t good enough after all if you’re worried this enchantment can perfectly replicate it. Besides, look, this spell made by the enchantment got so many more people to look at it on the town notice board. Do you feel bad? Stop it, being a wizard isn’t a real job anyway.

homura's emotionality and fragility are so overlooked in the main series and i think that wraith arc, the rebellion movie, and hopefully the upcoming walpurgisnacht rising movie, does her proper justice in this aspect of her character.

she's characterized primarily by her cold and distant disposition, someone who's known to be capable of pushing aside her own emotions and suppressing it for the sake of the one and only objective that exists in her mind, and to the point that she would sacrifice even herself for it. this came with the misinterpretation that she is a heartless and abusive individual who never cared for the feelings of the other casts, that she was unkind and never cared for her companions that arent madoka.

imo the "i dont really care if you live or die, i dont really care" quote that was popular with homura is nothing but a defense mechanism—that mechanism, feigning an act of emotional aridity, is a vital part of her development because it led to her feelings being bottled up that we're left with an explosion of suppressed and repressed thoughts in rebellion, that of which caused her to become a witch. being hurt so many times by the fact that her friends died repetitively throughout different timelines, she thought that her emotions caused her to waver when achieving her goal and thus swept them under the rug, never fully processing them.

underneath that mask of coldness, she is a frail girl that never wished to become strong—she was only forced to be so by the narrative and this is shown in rebellion. homura's witch labyrinth is a reflection of her psychological distress that erupted like a volcano and her perception of what the 'ideal' would be. in that movie, we were shown a version of homura most prevalent during the earlier timelines; someone who is meek and shy, but that remained herself regardless, the her in the labyrinth, and that labyrinth being a projection of her mental landscape.

she doesnt mind being the weakest magical girl among the holy quintet if that meant that she could be with the people she loved most, as long as that meant that they are alive then she doesnt mind, because she's already pleased with the fact that she was able to work beside them and live in a world with them again, just like how they used to. this ties in as well with my claims of her being so attached to an idealized past because this version of homura in rebellion is one that was cradled in her memories and it showed the dynamics that the holy quintet had, or at least she wished to have.

still, homura didnt want to lie to herself and pursued the truth of the labyrinth, merely following her intuition that told her something was incredibly off with the place. mitakihara was the only city in the labyrinth and i think that showed how small her focus is in this world, her perception of things have always been so narrow because she didnt want anything else other than to co-exist and work together with the other mitakihara magical girls.

another piece of media that showed homura's emotionality is wraith arc, and i think this is where her fragility is beautifully presented, because it allowed the readers to see what was really going on in her mind and how she managed with the fact that her madoka became a concept in itself.

in this arc, she was seen to rely on her feelings the most, and specifically that of love. this was to the point that when she doubted her love for madoka, she allowed the wraiths to consume what was left of the soul contained in her soul gem. these doubts and worries came into the scene when she began to question what was it that she originally wished for? because in the wraith arc, she had no memories of how she became a magical girl there, she had no idea on what existed in that timeline before her consciousness was transferred over there, and she had no idea what her magic turned into.

this was until the sooner chapters where it was revealed that her time manipulation magic had turned into a memory manipulation magic. this was a result of the strong emotions she felt during the time she was separated from madoka and with her refusal to ever forget her, but this came with her skepticism—was her concept of 'madoka' simply a creation of her own mind? was it created by her imagination to cope with the lonely reality of the world? did she really harbor feelings towards something that never 'existed' in the first place? if 'madoka' never existed, what was she originally fighting for to begin with, why did she become a magical girl? can she truly trust her love for 'madoka' when it was the thing that caused her to feel so disconnected from reality itself? is she finally waking up to the 'truth'? if 'madoka' never existed, then surely there wont be any more reason to protect this world and to serve as a magical girl, right?

because of questioning how she feels towards madoka and how she remembers madoka, she began to feel out of touch—offbeat—and lost her desire to fight wraiths, and this character neurosis evident in her resulted in becoming a victim of those wraiths. the wraiths absorbed her feelings to the extent that she ended up being an empty shell of a person, her soul that rested inside the confines of her soul gem was eaten up that her magic became efficient, and eventually null.

when gradually, to the end of the arc's manga, she began to think deeply if this was what she truly wanted? why did she ever distrust her memories of madoka? if 'madoka' never existed, then surely she wouldnt have been a magical girl to begin with, and if her wish in that timeline would be to remember madoka, does that mean she wanted to remember something? she could only remember a thing if it really was there. if she couldnt protect the world that her goddess had sacrificed herself for, was her wish really worth it? why did she ever doubt her love?

at that moment, the strength of the emotions she felt, despite that mask of nonchalance, she was able to regain her time manipulation ability and go back to the start to ensure that the wraiths wouldnt ruin madoka's world ever again. the things that she felt became a huge driving force that if she felt none, if she was truly cold and empty and emotionless and hopeless, then she wouldve stopped and given up a long time ago.

note: this post is not proofread and i literally just made this in one sitting. never let me yap about my special interest ever again. this is also just an interpretation i have on her character; everyone is allowed to create their own opinions.

The mischaracterization of Homura Akemi is something that needs to be studied

1)

The Mischaracterization Of Homura Akemi Is Something That Needs To Be Studied

Wrong, she isn’t a yandere, at least by textbook definition.

Reason one: Homura is incapable of killing Madoka’s friends, even if she wanted to

In the fight with Mami during the movie Rebellion, she is shown attempting to shoot her in the chest at the end of their fight. Despite this, Homura can’t bring herself to, instead opting to shoot her in the calf.

Another one is that despite how much she dislikes Sayaka she does not harm her life, she torments her, yes, but never even tries to physically harm or wound her, even after becoming a demon. The only one she has ever killed is Kyubey

Two. Homura is shown to care about others than Madoka

Time and time again, we are proven that Homura loves her teammates

While fighting Mami during Rebellion, she talks about how painful it always was to tell her the truth, to see her lose herself in depression after figuring out Kyubey’s deception

Homura is visibly shaken and upset when Kyoko sacrifices herself.

It is show that seeing the others die upsets her on multiple occasions, especially in the earlier timelines.

Its mentioned as well that Homura tried to save everyone, but eventually gave up after realizing it was impossible.

2)

The Mischaracterization Of Homura Akemi Is Something That Needs To Be Studied

For this, I specifically will be referring to the ‘desiring Madoka all to herself’

In Homura’s Labyrinth, not only Madoka was there, but so were Sayaka, Kyoko, Mami and even Nagisa. If Homura only wanted to be with Madoka and only have her to herself, then why would her ideal world have the others?

Homura doesn’t want a world where she has Madoka all to herself, Homura wants a world where all of them can be happy, fighting side by side while going to school and hanging out like normal teenagers, even if she has to be a villain to make it happen. Homura says herself that what she truly desires is a world where Madoka can be happy, and that is what she fights for.

Madoka Magica is not a story about a girl who wants someone all to herself, Madoka Magica is a story about hope, that no matter where you are there is always someone fighting for you, there is always someone who loves you. And that is said in the final credits, which is enough proof

That is not me saying that Homura is a complete saint or anything, but that is me saying that Homura is in no way as bad a person as people make her out to be, and that she is an unwell child that has been in an awful situation for anyone to be in.

Edit: I’ve been corrected that Homura did try to kill Sayaka, I honestly don’t know how I forgot about that but I apologize nonetheless!
